INTRODUCTION FROM THE HEADMASTER Coming out of the pandemic, it was so important that our Senior pupils had the opportunity to experience a Sports Tour both for those students completing their careers at RGS and those students looking forward to the new RGS Rugby season ahead. We wanted to give them something to look forward to and build towards, since Tours are fantastic opportunities for players to develop key aspects of their skills. They are also so much more than this. A Rugby Tour to Canada is a chance to develop teamwork and togetherness; it will be an experience the pupils never forget as they learn about another country and meet and make new friends both on and off the pitch. I wish every member of the Tour party a really enjoyable experience and I can assure them they will build memories that will stay with them forever.
hospitality off the pitch and I know the Tour party will be made to feel very welcome at every stage of their itinerary in this beautiful country. I am sure that they will each learn about one another and, perhaps more than anything else, they will learn about themselves.
Canadian Rugby has developed significantly as a national sport and the opposition will show high levels of commitment and skill on the pitch. I am sure this will be matched by wonderful
John Pitt Headmaster
My heartfelt thanks to everyone who has been instrumental in supporting the Senior Rugby Tour 2022. Thank you to the sponsors for their generosity. Thank you to the parents who have helped with fundraising and encouraged the boys. Thank you to Mr Lewis, Head of Rugby, for organising the Tour and for building such a strong culture in our Senior Rugby. Thank you to the other teachers who are supporting the Tour. Finally, congratulations to the boys and I wish them all the very best!
Gareth Roots I joined RGS Worcester in 2016 as Director of Sport, having previously worked at Brighton College as Head of PE. I am moving on to a new school in September having thoroughly enjoyed my time at RGS. I am very much looking forward to finishing my time at the School with what should be a memorable trip to Canada. Sporting Background I am a typical Director of Sport - jack of all trades but master of none! I have played a number of sports to a reasonably high standard, with Cricket being my favourite sport having represented Warwickshire up to Academy level and represented many strong club teams across the country. I am also a single figure handicap Golfer and keen Triathlete. Most Looking Forward To Being on tour again! The impact of Covid-19 has obviously prevented us from running such trips for a long period of time now. The camaraderie and benefits the pupils can get from a good sports tour such as Canada are unrivalled and I look forward to seeing the boys enjoy the experience and play some good rugby along the way. People may not Know: I once auditioned for a televised show called Total Wipeout, hosted by Richard Hammond and Amanda Byram. I successfully gained a place to travel out to Argentina for recording. Unfortunately, the dates clashed with the academic school year so I was unable to attend. Very frustrating!
Robert Lewis I have been Head of Rugby at RGS for two years, after previously being Head Coach at Malvern College. Before this I worked at Worcester Warriors in the Community Team whilst I transitioned from professional Rugby, this also coincided with finishing an Open University Degree in Business, Sport Psychology and Information Technology Sporting background: My Rugby career started when I was in Year Seven, converting from Football, when my father sent me to a school that only played Rugby. I grew to enjoy the sport, not only for the camaraderie on the field but also the core values learnt whilst playing. During school I was in the Newport Gwent Dragons Academy, progressing to the senior team upon leaving school. During this time, I made my senior debut on my 18th birthday away at Munster and gained international experience for Wales Under 18s, Under 19s, Under 20s and Wales 7s. I would go on to have professional stints at London Welsh and Cardiff Blues over my 15 year career. Most looking forward to: Away from tour I am and have been looking forward to viewing how these young men develop and learn. It is the strong bonds you create and the once in a lifetime opportunities you experience that will be unforgettable. This will be my first tour with RGS Worcester, and we could not ask for a better destination, I am confident that the pupils will represent the School and themselves proudly. People may not know: Whilst on a family vacation I managed to complete a Man vs Food Challenge, a 72 ounce steak, one of my proudest achievements. I have also played at all Rugby Stadiums in the top two divisions in Wales (Rabo Direct and Welsh Premiership) and the top three divisions in England (English Premiership, English Championship and National 1)

This is my second year at RGS, where I teach Philosophy and Religion and I am a form tutor in Year Seven. In addition, I am excited to be a part of the School’s Rugby programme. As an academic member of staff it is a privilege to be out on the Rugby pitches and see pupils outside of the usual classroom environment. This year, I was in charge of the Under 15 team, and the highlight was a dramatic last-second conversion to seal victory and advance to the next round of the cup.
I joined RGS Worcester at the start of this academic year as a Sports Assistant and progressed to the role of full time PE Teacher. I have spent my time across the Prep Schools as well as the Senior School which has given me a great insight into sport across the RGS Worcester Family of Schools.
Sporting background: I began playing Rugby at school, starting in the front row before gradually moving to the back row. Although my Rugby playing career peaked when I was selected for the Coventry Schools’ side at 16. I continued to play while attending University in Sheffield and Warwick. More recently, I have switched from playing to coaching and I am now a qualified Level 2 coach. Most looking forward to:
Sporting background: From a young age I played many different sports including Rugby, Football, Badminton and Tennis. During my time in Secondary School, I focussed on Football which resulted in me representing Cardiff Schools Football at different age groups. From representing my School’s First XI in Years Ten through to Sixth Form, to playing Men’s Club Football, I then had the fantastic opportunity to play at Collegiate level in the USA on a Scholarship in Kentucky for four years. Since returning I have played at different clubs in Bath and more recently Malvern Town and now find my enthusiasm for sport leading me down the coaching route. Most looking forward to:
Canada will be my first international tour with the School so I am looking forward to the whole trip but in particular I am looking forward to seeing Niagara Falls and to see what the standard of schoolboy Rugby is like in Canada.
Being a part of a great trip to somewhere I have never been before, supporting all the pupils in a great opportunity, and experiencing a sports tour away from my main sport.

I am a fan of Baseball and have attended games in 16 out of the 30 Major League Baseball stadiums.
Having lived in America for almost four years I have travelled to New York, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, and Death Valley in Nevada (famous for being the hottest place on Earth).

Most looking forward to:
I am Head of Football and the Duke of Edinburgh Award. My time is split between leading boys sports from Reception to Year Six at Springfield and RGS Worcester. I am in my thirtieth year as a PE teacher and I am still very passionate about teaching and coaching. I am very lucky to teach the full age range with such a variety of sports and co-curricular activities.
I have a bucket list which does include a full school sports tour coupled with an ambition to visit North West America and Canada and this is certainly a very exciting prospect. I am also still keen to learn as a coach and a manager observing how trips are organised and managed as well as watching a Rugby squad adapt and flourish in a tour environment both on and off the field. As a coach I feel I am always learning, striving for new ideas and approaches and I hope to develop as a rugby coach but also adapt and transfer ideas to other sports that I am involved with.
Sporting Background Having attended boarding school from the age of 7-19 years, I benefitted from the extra time available to play all sports and particularly Rugby, Hockey and Cricket. I had however, always wanted to pursue and specialise as a Footballer. At University I spent 18 months at Cheltenham Town FC and had the opportunity to build a Football club from scratch. I spent the next seven years as a Semi-pro player/ manager leading the club to the cusp of the as then Southern League.
People may not know: I have played Hockey and American Football for the Isle of Wight Mens XI and White Rhinos respectively. As a player I loved playing Rugby 7’s. I only started playing Football properly at 19. In my spare time I love watching movies, Nordic Noir dramas, reading and listening to music ranging from Classical to Dance. I achieved an A in Latin at O Level! Favourite player and hero growing up was Kenny Dalglish and I was a real fan of the culture and coaching methods of Liverpool FC in the 7080’s and Arsene Wenger at Arsenal in the late 1990-2000’s.
ABOUT: CANADA Canada is the largest country in the Western hemisphere and the second largest country in the world after Russia and borders only one country, the United States of America. Canada has the longest coastline in the world with 202,080 km/ 125,567 miles. Toronto is the largest city in Canada, and the 4th largest city in North America. In the city proper, Toronto is closing in on 3 million people, and the Greater Toronto Area boasts a population of almost 6.5 million! Toronto also has one of the fastest growing populations in all of North America The CN Tower is the largest free-standing structure in the Western Hemisphere. Up until 2007, it held the crown of the tallest freestanding structure on the planet. It held that crown for 32 years, but then that crown had to be passed over to the Burj Khalifa, which was built in Dubai. Toronto has a team in every major league. The Maple Leafs (NHL), the Raptors (AHL), the Blue Jays (MLB), the Marlies (AHL), the Rock (Lacrosse), Toronto FC (MLS), the Wolfpack (Rugby) etc. Toronto’s Pearson Airport is Canada’s busiest airport. In 2019, Toronto Pearson International Airport handled nearly 50 million passengers to go along with almost 500,000 flights. Straddling the border between the United States and Canada, it has been a popular tourist attraction for over 200 years, as well as a major source of hydroelectric power.
Robert Lewis's INTRODUCTION
One of my fondest and strongest memories of playing schoolboy Rugby are the tours with your peers, creating experiences in locations and countries you wouldn’t have the opportunity to play sport in, unless you are luckily enough to reach professionalism. This is a fantastic opportunity for all the boys selected to tour. The chance to spend approximately 2 weeks with your best friends playing Rugby on the other side of the world is a once in a lifetime experience. This will be my first tour with RGS and my second visit to Canada for Rugby purposes. The passion to develop rugby in Canada is amazing and this will be witnessed in the two Universities that are being used for our accommodation and their high-calibre sporting facilities; Toronto University and Guelph University. The Tour offers many breathtaking moments and activities, consisting of visits to the CN Tower, the Toronto Blue Jays Major League Baseball Stadium (Playing against the Phillies), the Grand Experiences Canoe Camp, Skylon Tower and the famous Hornblower Boat Cruise in Niagara Falls - all great experiences creating memorable moments for these young men. Leading into the Tour I would like to highlight once again, as was done for the Modus Cup, a famous Dylan Thomas poem, which has helped throughout my personal professional rugby career. The defining message of the anecdote being “do not give up without a fight, even in testing and trying times, do not give up and don’t be gentle about it”.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right, Because their words had forked no lightning they Do not go gentle into that good night.
The words - Rage, Rage highlighting the passion and the fire needed to triumph in difficult times. There will be moments on Tour, and in life, that will challenge us as individuals and as a team, and it is how we react to these moments that will define us.
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way, Do not go gentle into that good night.
Resilience, Gracious, Selfless and Selfless, our Charter for Sport is clearly encompassed in the reading. “Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
And you, my father, there on the sad height, Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray. Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.”
On the pitch we will be fulfilling a total of 6 fixtures, participating in the Guelph University Cross Border Series. This will give our RGS students the opportunity to play teams they may never get the opportunity to compete against again. Canada as a nation, who are still relatively new to the professional game, will demonstrate the foundational core values that Rugby Union has to offer and what attracts everyone to the game. The first year back from the pandemic, Rugby has managed to play over 100 matches over the course of the Michaelmas term, which was complemented by a successful Lent Rugby 7s term. Over the course of the Rugby calendar the Under 12s demonstrated great promise and determination with the B’s and D’s ending in unbeaten-seasons, whilst the Under 13s had a positive season, having the ability to field 3 sides. The Under 14s had a steady 15-a-side season with their results, but had an extremely successful 7-a-side season which demonstrated tremendous progress in understanding and application. The Under 15s progressed through to the last 32 of the National Schools Plate Competition, which was the highlight of their season. The three Senior Squads had a very successful season with historic wins against Dean Close, Malvern College and Solihull School which has not been achieved for several years. Over 40 students have represented the 1st XV this season, which is a great achievement given that the team has finished with a 64%win percentage (9 from 14), the highest for 16 years. This was supported by the 2nd XV gaining a 55%-win percentage (5 from 9), which has been their highest for 15 years, highlighting a true senior squad effort. Players across the School have also achieved well-deserved representative honours in the forms of the Worcester Warriors DDP, Worcester Warriors Under 17s & Under 18s, Worcestershire Under 17s, North Midlands, Midlands and England Under 18s, which highlights the true potential and future of Rugby at RGS Worcester.

However, the Rugby programme at RGS is not only focused on developing our 1st XV, but all other teams right the way down to Year Seven. An example of this would be the introduction of the Modus-to-Mini focus, whereby boys in the senior squads helped to coach, support and mentor teams and players throughout the School. It seems like a lunchtime never passes when I don’t see Loic Keasey (England Under 18s player and 1st XV hooker) in Cobham Hall sharing his knowledge and skills with aspiring hookers, who one day want to run out onto the pitch in front of the thousands of spectators at Sixways in the Schools largest annual sporting event: Modus Cup.
CAPTAIN Ben Gaubert
Nickname: Gaubs Position: Centre The 2021-22 season has been a season of highs and lows, with the team facing unprecedented challenges in regards to the Covid 19 pandemic. The coaches and team however did not let this get the better of them, and made the most of a season which promised to be thrilling. The season kicked off with a friendly against Hereford Cathedral School, and the team ethos throughout the RGS community was evident from the moment we walked out at Fortress Flagge, applauded out of the changing rooms by a buzzing home crowd, having waited two years for a 1st XV fixture. This also meant that our entire team was making their debut for the firsts given the lack of Rugby the previous year. Whilst this may suggest we would have been raw and incohesive as a team, this could not be further from the truth, due to both the team bonding socials organised by individuals of the team, and the vigorous summer training programme put in place for the team by Mr Lewis and his coaching staff. Every week the boys would be down for training, which involved amongst other things: bespoke gym sessions for varying positions, bullet proof sessions to ensure our bodies were ready for contact, and ‘fluffy’ skills provided by none other than Welsh Rugby Sevens star James Lewis. Mr Lewis brought in a wealth of knowledge, managing to surround himself and the boys by such an experienced and masterful coaching staff, with high international honours in the Rugby community, which has been a great boost to the team; James Lewis, Aleki Lutui, and Mr Morton to name but a few, each one passing on their Rugby prowess in their respective areas of the game. This has really helped to develop our senior players through the season.
In spite of the result, this year’s Modus Cup was definitely an experience to remember for all boys involved. I remember being at RGS The Grange and going to watch the match each year, just picturing myself in the players boots, alongside my teammates, playing at the home of the Worcester Warriors. When this became reality it was so surreal and definitely the biggest Rugby occasion that most of the team and I have been part of. Other highlights of the season include a well fought win against Dean Close, a side whose heart and physicality should never be underestimated. A 17-6 away victory was a great send off to Mr Brindley, our previous Head of Strength and Conditioning. Mr Brindley played such a key role in our successful season, developing the players in the Fitness Suite all the way through their RGS journeys, and this result served as a testament to him. Some would argue that our triumph the previous week was far sweeter however, facing Malvern College away in the direst weather conditions of the season. Not only was this a National Cup fixture, but it was also Mr Lewis’ previous place of work, and this meant that the players were desperate to win the dog fight which the torrential rain had promised. From the moment we stood
round in our pre match circle, I knew we had already won. The buzz in every one of the team was a sight to behold, even without one of Joe Whitbread’s passionate team talks. 80 minutes later the whistle sounded at the close of a 45-0 game, the weather didn’t manage to sour Mr Lewis’ sweet afternoon. My final highlight is more of a personal one, when we welcomed Solihull School to ‘Fortress Flagge’. The boys were in their deepest losing streak of the season, at 2 losses on the trot, a minute yet disconcerting number, considering the success prior to it. The game was never going to be easy, and Solihull brought the same fight that they had the past 5 years. With the scores virtually level at half time, we knew that we would have to find a new gear if we were going to come out on top at the final whistle. And we did. It was phenomenal to feel the team dig so deep and step up to the challenge, even in a game where it could be argued that the stakes were far lower than others on the fixture list. Mr Lewis often called us an emotional team, highlighting that we find it easier to rise to an occasion of meaning. This game demonstrated that despite our emotive nature, we can still deliver against tough opponents, even when the odds seem against us and there isn’t a need to measure up to expectation. The fact that the team of 2021-22 now holds the title of most successful season for 16 years serves as a tribute to that. I would like to conclude, by saying how much of a privilege it has been to captain the players this year, and I am looking forward to rounding off the season in Canada with a cracking bunch of boys. I will leave you with a quote that has inspired myself and others in the squad when facing the most formidable challenges this season: “Fight like you are the third monkey on the ramp to Noah’s ark, and brother, it’s starting to rain”

Nickname: Fallows Position: Wing / Full Back I have been playing Rugby since I was nine and have been consistently in the A team for school rugby since I joined The Grange in Year Five and I got player of the season in Year Eight. When I watch Rugby I would often watch Jonny May because he wasn’t huge like a lot of the other players but he made his mark where he needed to and was often a large thorn in the opponents side. I am really looking forward to visiting the Niagara Falls and going to the Blue Jays Baseball game and of course playing Rugby with everyone. I also think meeting people with similar interests but from a very different place will be quite enjoyable.

I am one of the smallest players in the squad in stature but try and use that to the best of my ability and turn it into an advantage. I am looking forward to having a lot of fun and laughs with my teammates whilst also having a successful tour on the field, which will cap off a great season and start the new one positively.

From tag Rugby at RGS The Grange, my sporting journey has now led me to representing the School in Rugby Union, Rugby 7s, Football and Cricket. This year I had the honour of representing the North Midlands Under 17s. Joost van der Westhuizen was a massive role model for me, including when he finished his playing career. I am looking forward to exploring a different country and getting involved and learning about Canadian cultures. I am also hopeful of seeing a Canadian Moose.

Being exposed in all three sports from a young age has given me an insight on how athletes develop and perform with the different skills that are transferrable between each sport. Throughout the season I have played in many positions and some would say I am the ‘Swiss Army knife’ of the 1st XV Rugby team, playing 9,10,12 and Hooker this year. Having the opportunity to play in the Modus Cup one of the biggest sporting events that the school has to offer, was a tremendous experience.

I originally played lots of Football during the first few years at RGS and that was my main sport until two seasons of Rugby changed my mind. Now I only play Rugby as it has completely taken over my interests. The most memorable moment for me while playing Rugby was a 52-19 win against Colstons in the first game of last season. Fundraising Event for thE Rugby Tour to Canada
a Sports Tour, both for those students completing their careers at RGS and those looking forward to the new RGS Rugby season ahead. We wanted to give pupils something to look forward to and build towards, since Tours are fantastic opportunities for players to develop key aspects of their skills.”
In June we welcomed parents and friends to Perrins Hall for a fundraising Dinner event for this summer’s Senior Rugby Tour to Canada. The evening was a fantastic occasion, and included a three-course meal, accompanied by entertainment in the form of a fun game of ‘Heads and Tails’, raffle and an auction.
“Tours are also so much more than this. This tour to Canada is a chance to develop teamwork and togetherness; it will be an experience the pupils never forget as they learn about another country and meet and make new friends both on and off the pitch. I wish every member of the Tour party a really enjoyable experience and I can assure them they will build memories that will stay with them forever.” “My heartfelt thanks to everyone who has been instrumental in supporting the Senior Rugby Tour 2022; to the sponsors for their generosity, parents who have helped with fundraising and encouraged the boys and Mr Lewis, Head of Rugby, for organising the Tour and for building such a strong culture in our Senior Rugby.”
The highlight of the evening was the Guest Speaker, our very own Olympic Medallist Sally Walton, who spoke about how tours developed her career and created life-long memories. The second highlight was Mr Gaubert, who outbid the competition at the auction to win himself the ‘Tour Moose’, which he has the honour to name, and will go to the youngest member on tour! As the School’s first major Rugby Tour since the pandemic, it has been eagerly awaited and will provide a great opportunity for the boys both to celebrate their sporting development and prepare for the season ahead. The Tour will also offer pupils many sightseeing opportunities and visits, including: the CN Tower and the Toronto Blue Jays Major League Baseball Stadium (Playing against the Phillies), the Grand Experiences Canoe Camp, Skylon Tower and the famous Hornblower Boat Cruise in Niagara Falls. Head of Rugby, Rob Lewis, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for the boys – the chance to spend approximately two weeks with your best friends playing Rugby on the other side of the world, is a once in a lifetime experience. This will be my first Tour with RGS and my second visit to Canada for Rugby purposes and, as the boys will see, the passion to develop Rugby in Canada is amazing!” Headmaster, John Pitt said: “Coming out of the pandemic, it is so important that our Senior pupils have the opportunity to experience
We wish all those attending this summer’s Rugby Tour a fabulous time and look forward to hearing all about it in September.
The future of rgs worcester rugby After a tremendous first Rugby season back following the Covid-19 pandemic, it is with great pleasure and excitement we announce the plans and preparation RGS Worcester Rugby has put into place for the 2022 – 23 season. During his career he was named in the Tonga squad for the 2007, 2011 and 2015 Rugby World Cups, often leading the Tongan Haka, the Kailao. Aleki said: “I’m delighted to be joining the RGS Rugby coaching staff next year as Rugby Development Coach. The opportunity to help develop young Rugby players at RGS is something I’m really looking forward to and I am excited to get to work with the quality players and staff that RGS have in their Rugby environment. The ambition of the School is there for all to see. I can’t wait to get going this summer with pre-season training, as we build towards the start of the 2022 – 23 campaign.” Joining the RGS team as Sports Assistant, is current Birmingham Moseley Rugby Player of the Year, Ollie Allsopp. Ollie’s previous clubs include Worcester Warriors Academy and London Scottish in the English Championship. Ollie helped throughout last season with Year Seven and Ten training sessions at RGS, whilst working for the Worcester Warriors Community Rugby Coaching team, and has built a great rapport with the RGS pupils. He, like Aleki, will also be lending his expertise and knowledge across all Year groups of the School. We are also delighted that James Lewis, former Wales 7’s specialist and London Welsh player, will be continuing his role as skills coach with the Senior Squad. The new Director of Sport at RGS, Keith Fowles arrives in September with a strong Rugby Union pedigree. Having a vast amount of experience in developing competitive sports programmes that have achieved national success, Mr Fowles, has completed the highest rugby coaching qualification; RFU Level 4 coaching award, and has RFU Coach, Educator and Mentor qualifications. Head of Rugby, Mr Lewis commented: “It is very exciting times for Rugby here at RGS Worcester and highlights our desire to compete. Aleki and Ollie have a proven track record from working with the School and it is going to be extremely beneficial to now have all pupils across all Year groups learning from their coaching and knowledge of the game. This, along with the addition of Mr Fowles, will help to develop our coaching across all staff. Securing James Lewis to continue his role with Senior players was crucial, and we could clearly see the developments and benefits that he provided last season. It is also very pleasing that RGS Worcester will provide coaches within the Worcester Warriors Academy programmes, with representation at Under 18, Under 16 and Under 14 level. With the Summer Rugby Tour to Canada just around the corner, preparations have been made for a pre-season that will put us in a strong position leading into the new season.”
