INTRODUCTION FROM THE HEADMASTER When the Heads of Hockey and Netball told me that Barbados was the country of choice for a Sports Tour, I could understand entirely! What an amazing opportunity for the RGS girls and, coming out of the pandemic, it was so important that our Senior pupils had the opportunity to experience a Sports Tour abroad. A combined Sports Tour across age groups is so exciting because the girls will get to know one another so well while also experiencing another country where Sport is held in such high regard. I have little doubt that they will be tested on the pitch and court and will develop their skills and understanding of Hockey and Netball. Those finishing their school career will enjoy their final experience of RGS Sport, while the other girls will be building towards next season.

Above all, I hope that the Tour party will enjoy embracing a new culture and I am sure they will experience wonderful hospitality in Barbados. They will each learn about one another and, perhaps more than anything else, they will learn about themselves and have memories they will never forget. My heartfelt thanks to everyone who has been instrumental in supporting the Senior Hockey and Netball Tour 2022. Thank you to the sponsors for their generosity. Thank you to the parents who have helped with fundraising. Thank you to Miss Bennett and Miss Gibbons, Heads of Hockey and Netball respectively, for organising the Tour. Thank you to the other teachers who are supporting the Tour. Finally, congratulations to the girls and I wish them every success and a wonderful experience! John Pitt Headmaster

COACH PROFILES

Leanne Bennett – Tour Teacher profile I have been fortunate enough to go on two international sports tours with RGS to witness how the once in a lifetime opportunity can form lifelong friends and memories. From both the physical and mental challenges on the pitch and court to sharing rooms, dining out and going on excursions, every minute of the trip provides a learning opportunity for the girls to develop essential life skills. I look forward to seeing the departing Year Thirteen pupils play with pride for their last time in a green shirt, as well as the future senior squad developing their visions, values and behaviours throughout the trip.

Ellie Gibbons– Tour Teacher profile Barbados 2022 will be my first sports tour with RGS and I am incredibly excited to share that experience with our pupils who have been working so hard on and off the court all year. The Caribbean style of netball is fast, ferocious and full of flare - I can’t wait to see how our teams fair up against the opposition.

Deborah Harkness – Tour Teacher profile

Nicola Gill – Tour Teacher profile

Having been on numerous school trips including sports tours with RGS, I like Miss Bennett cannot wait to embark on this next adventure. These truly are once in a lifetime opportunities, from the memories that are made to the skills that are learnt. An avid hockey player in my youth I am also looking forward to hitting the pitches again and embracing the teamwork, resilience and pure enjoyment sport brings to our lives.

I am honoured to travel with the Girls’ Sports tour to Barbados this year as my first tour with RGS. I am looking forward to seeing our girls showcase their skills in Hockey and Netball and I am keen to get involved in the girls training and warm ups as I thoroughly enjoy all areas of sport. This will be an exciting adventure for the girls as they get to experience what Barbados has to offer and enjoy the full package of exciting excursions we have planned. Having left A&E after joining RGS a year ago - I’m hoping not to have to use my own nursing skill set, but at the ready should I be called upon

Sally Walton– Tour Teacher profile

Sofia Nicholls– Tour Teacher profile

In my six years at RGS this will be my first International summer tour. Having already been over to Barbados at half term, I am really excited by the experiences/culture/ trips we have as a group ahead of us. Training, playing and socialising together away from the relative normality of the school environment will help us make lifelong memories and develop you as both individuals and as a team. For some of you this will be your first major trip in a number of years. Embrace the trip, be open minded and allow yourself to get totally immersed in the experience.

Believe it or not, I was once Captain of my Hockey team at school! I thoroughly enjoyed all sports at School (with the exception of cross country in navy blue big knickers!) I firmly believe that participating in Sport is excellent for physical health as well as supporting a healthy mind and spirit. Sport should be played for enjoyment and I personally love running and thoroughly enjoy being in the outdoors. I am absolutely delighted to be travelling with the Girls’ Sports tour 2022 and look forward to a wonderful time supporting the girls in their Netball and Hockey matches, and enjoying the other events on the itinerary – it promises to be a trip of a lifetime.

Stuart Davis– Tour Teacher profile In my 13 years at RGS I have been lucky enough to travel on several sports tours with both the Senior Boys Rugby and Girls Netball and Hockey teams. My passions in life (apart from teaching of course) are travel and sport and I know that through these experiences and, sometimes challenges, you really do get to know your true self. The camaraderie that the girls will develop through this trip will help to develop lifelong friendships and I look forward to seeing them grow as both individuals and as teams as the trip progresses. I challenge the girls to push themselves outside of their comfort zone on tour and really immerse themselves in the culture. By doing so they really will get the most out of it.

Muhammed Irfan International Hockey player Former Pakistan Hockey Captain Going on a sports tour is one of the most important experiences of a sportsperson’s career. The key skills you can learn on a tour with like minded players / friends is invaluable. I can assure you, you’ll make life long memories from this wonderful opportunity! Good luck ! Muhammed Irfan International Hockey player Former Pakistan hockey captain

FACTS: BARBADOS The name of the country, “Barbados,” is derived from “the Bearded Fig Trees” once found in abundance on the island. Barbados is 34 kilometres (21 miles) in length and up to 23 kilometres (14 miles) in width, covering an area of 432 square kilometres (167 square miles). Bridgetown is the capital and largest city of the nation of Barbados. It’s known for its British colonial architecture, 17th-century Garrison and horse-racing track.. Its coastline is 97 kilometres (60 miles) in length. Barbados is a coral island and most of its beaches are made from finely ground coral forming a clean fine grain. The people of Barbados are called Barbadians or Bajans. Barbados also exports $57 million of rum per year across the world. Barbados is known as “the land of the flying fish”, with flying fish being a common sight around the island and one of the national symbols of the country. The grapefruit was invented on the island, by combining a pomelo and sweet orange tree. Rihanna, the international singer, is from Barbados.
