Craig Rainey has quickly gained a reputation as one of the best NCAA Division III baseball coaches in the country. Rainey enters his 18th season in the best position his program has even been. The Bulldogs are fresh off another 30-win season for the third straight year at 30-13 and have made the NCAA Mideast Regional five of the last six years. The Bulldogs have won or shared four of the last six MIAA championships and finished a close second in the other two seasons. They have compiled an overall record of 176-86 (.672) since the beginning of the 2005 season and have been dominant in the MIAA with a league record of 127-34 (.789). In 2010, Adrian compiled a team batting average of .341 which ranked 56th in Division III. In addition, the Bulldogs ranked 21st in team ERA. Adrian was 13-5 at Nicolay Field and won 12 straight games during the season from Apr. 1 to Apr. 17. AC advanced to the Mideast Regional hosted by Marietta and defeated Washington & Jefferson in 10 innings in game one. They then dropped close contests to Heidelberg and Thomas More. Adrian has won at least one game in every regional under Rainey. Coach Rainey coached the MIAA Player of the Year, Alex Cowart, and Pitcher of the Year, Josh Lancaster. Cowart also was named ABCA Second Team All-American. In 2009, Adrian set an MIAA record by winning the league with a 25-3 record. The team hosted the 2009 NCAA Mideast Regional at Nicolay Field for the first time in school history and finished third. Adrian was bounced out of the regionals by eventual national runner-up College of Wooster, but did pick up wins against Rose-Hulman (9-8) and Heidelberg (3-1). AC bounced back after an opening game loss to Marietta to win those two games and finish the regional at 2-2. The team went 33-11 overall and Rainey coached both the MIAA Pitcher of the Year in Ryan Domschot and co-MIAA Position Players of the Year in Todd Meyers and Alex Cowart. Cowart and Domschot were also named All-Americans in 2009. Rainey and the Bulldogs accomplished a lot of positive things in 2008 and made a name for themselves on both a regional and national stage. The Bulldogs compiled a 36-13 overall record and received an at-large bid into the Mideast Regional hosted by Rose-Hulman Institute in Terre Haute, Indiana. Adrian made history by becoming the first MIAA team to advance to the NCAA Nationals in Appleton, Wisconsin by winning the regional. The Bulldogs then compiled two wins in the nationals over Linfield and Kean on their way to finishing fourth in Division III after a third-place game loss to Wisconsin-Whitewater. Rainey was named Mideast Regional Coach of the Year and senior Bobby Rickstad was selected as Mideast Regional Player of the Year and Third Team All-American by the ABCA. In 17 seasons at the helm, Rainey has become the program’s winningest coach. In 2006, the Bulldogs won their secondstraight MIAA crown, sharing the title with co-champion Hope College. Ranked fifth in the Mideast region at season’s end, the 2006 squad was 25-15 overall and 21-7 in the conference. The 2005 squad won the MIAA title and made the school’s first NCAA Tournament appearance. The 2005 Bulldogs set school records for wins (27) and ended the season ranked fourth in the Mideast region. Rainey has mentored 26 all-region performers, as well as 50 first-team All-MIAA players. He has also produced five conference MVPs and three league most valuable pitchers. Three of his former Bulldogs have gone on to play professionally with Keith Bozyk `94 and Greg Sieszputoski `99 playing for the Chillicothe Paints of the Frontier League and Alex Cowart set to play with Shreveport-Bossier in 2011. With experience coaching at both the Connie Mack and Poly League level, Rainey has been a guest speaker at the Michigan High School Baseball Association coaches’ clinic and the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association coaches clinic. Prior to serving as the Bulldogs head coach, Rainey was an assistant coach under former coach and athletic director Henry Mensing. In 1993, Rainey helped AC to its first MIAA baseball championship. A 1988 graduate of Adrian College, Rainey started for three years at catcher for the Bulldogs and won the MIAA batting crown as a senior, hitting .467 in league games. Rainey later earned a master’s degree in sports administration from the United States Sports Academy. A product of Owosso, Rainey and his wife Jeannie have two children, Gunner and Kia, and reside in Adrian.

Pitching Coach Gordie Theisen

7th Season Siena Heights (1982)

Gordie Theisen is in his seventh year as the pitching coach for Adrian College. He is one key reason for the Bulldogs success since his arrival. Thiesen’s pitching staff ranked 21st in Division III in ERA in 2010 and averaged 6.8 strikeouts per nine innings. Theisen has been coaching baseball since 1979. He served as the Head Baseball Coach at Siena Heights University from 19872003, finishing with 341 career wins, including several victories over Division I opponents, including Michigan State University, University of Michigan, and University of Toledo. He produced three Saints that were drafted by Major League teams during his coaching tenure and three more players that signed pro contracts. Theisen also runs his own business, GT Athletic Consulting and Baseball Instruction in Adrian. He has a son Eric, and a daughter, Tess.

Assistant Coach Aaron Klotz

12th Season Adrian College (1998) Adrian College Athletic Hall of Fame Member Aaron Klotz enters his 12th season as a member of the Adrian College coaching staff. A native of Jackson, Klotz graduated from Lumen Christi High School in 1994 and continued his education at Adrian. Under Klotz’s direction in 2005, the Adrian College Bulldogs set a new school record for fielding percentage and ranked 16th in the nation for total defense. During the 2005 and 2006 seasons, Klotz helped lead the Bulldogs to back-to-back MIAA championships and appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Klotz started for four years at second base for Coach Rainey from 1995-98 and was first team All-MIAA his junior year. He was also voted the MIAA’s MVP in 1997. SEASON PREVIEW The state of the baseball program at Adrian College has never been better. Over the last six years, the Bulldogs have won or shared four of the last six MIAA championships and finished a close second in the other two seasons. They have compiled an overall record of 176-86 (.672) since the beginning of the 2005 season and have been dominant in the MIAA with a league record of 127-34 (.789). The team has compiled three straight 30-win seasons for the first time in school history and have won 20 or more conference games for the past five seasons. It is exactly where head coach Craig Rainey always envisioned they would be. “Building the program has been a challenge, but we have been lucky enough to recruit some fine athletes” said Rainey, entering his 18th season as skipper. “Our goals are still the same as when I first started here. We want to win the MIAA first and then advance to the regionals. We want to win the regionals and advance to nationals. Ultimately, the national championship is every team’s goal. When I first started coaching here at Adrian College, I wanted baseball to be a premier sport on campus. I think we have done that.” Adrian has also tasted success in the postseason as they have made five trips to the NCAA Mideast Regional in the past six years and also won the 2008 Mideast Regional title in Terre Haute, Indiana. That year the Bulldogs traveled to Appleton, Wisconsin and finished fourth at nationals picking up wins over Linfield and Kean. The fourth place finish is the best showing by a MIAA team to date. Adrian has won nine regional games during their current run and have won at least one game in each regional appearance. “This year’s team will be led by a group of seniors that have made their mark on the program’s history,” said Rainey. “These guys have set the bar high for future classes and have been great people off the field, which makes me proud.” You can’t win games without solid pitching and no team may have a better top-end guy than senior lefty Ryan Domschot (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer). Domschot has been the ace of the starting staff for the past two years and will be asked to perform his magic on the mound in 2011. He posted a 6-2 record with a 3.04 ERA a year ago and threw 68 innings while striking out 72 batters. Domschot was named First Team All-MIAA for the second straight season and was also named MIAA Pitcher of the Year in 2009 as a sophomore. He enters his senior season with a career record of 19-7 with a 3.09 ERA and has struck out 193 hitters in 175 innings of work. Domschot ranks fifth in school history in wins, fourth in ERA and tied for third in punchouts. Joining Domschot in the rotation will be fellow senior David Partyka (Detroit, Mich./Allen Park Cabrini) who burst onto the scene last season. Partyka had not

started a varsity game until last year and responded by going 8-1 with a 3.49 ERA in 56.2 innings. He tied for the team lead in wins and also led the team with three shutouts. He was named Second Team All-MIAA a year ago and needs another strong season to give Adrian a shot at the league title. Filling out the rotation will be a by-committee approach early in the season until guys show progress. Sophomore Josh Burd (Saline, Mich./Saline) saw action in six games a year ago and threw just five innings. He struggled with his command which led to three walks and eight hits allowed. He did post a 1-1 record in his limited duty. Sophomore Zach Robbins (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln) also saw limited action but did make one start against Siena Heights on March 24. Robbins had the second-best ERA on the team at 2.89 in seven outings and threw a total of 9.1 innings. He walked four and fanned eight while holding opponents to a .176 average. Junior Jason Fryman (Dowagiac, Mich./Dowagiac Union) made two starts in 2010 and stumbled with a 0-2 record and ERA of 9.37 in 16.1 innings. He needs to hit his spots better this season, but has the physical makeup to be a key contributor with two seasons under his belt. Freshman Brent Greenwood (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer) is a big presence on the mound at 6-5, 235 and came from the same high school program as Domschot. The coaching staff hopes that he can perform much like his current teammate at the collegiate level. Greenwood was named Second Team All-County and All-City as a junior and senior for the Panthers. As for the relief pitching this season, the Bulldogs return a pair of guys with experience. Junior Craig Steadman (Wyoming, Ont./Lambton Central) is a lefty situational guy who limited batters to a .234 average in 2010. Steadman posted a 3.55 ERA in 11 appearances and threw a total of 12.2 innings in relief. He struck out a dozen and posted a 1-0 record. Junior Sean Hartman (Midland, Mich./Dow) has a powerful right arm as a middle relief option. Hartman might also see a possible spot start and can fill innings if needed. He made 12 appearances a year ago and had a 5.50 ERA and no decisions in 18 innings. Hartman tallied 17 strikeouts and gave up just three extra-base hits. The closer spot is looking like it belongs to sophomore Lucas Willitzer (Defiance, Ohio/Tinora) who is a transfer from Wabash Valley College. Willitzer has the top fastball on the team clocked in the high 80’s and is being converted from catcher. Time will tell if he is able to handle the pressure cooker of a late-game situation. The Bulldogs are set at catcher with senior Joe Dubina (Canton, Ohio/South) back behind the dish after starting the past two seasons. Dubina has an

SEASON PREVIEW above average arm and is a steady hitter in the lower third of the order. He batted .319 last year and smacked six doubles and four home runs in 119 atbats. He also drove in 30 runs and had a .974 fielding percentage while throwing out 13 potential base stealers. Sophomore Jamey Sackett (Birmingham, Mich./Groves) will backup Dubina and got his feet wet as a freshman on varsity last season appearing in 15 games and hitting .313 with five hits in 16 at-bats. Senior Jake Cappelletty (Toledo, Ohio/St. John’s) became a much more patient hitter in 2010 and it paid off to the tune of a .364 average, the best of his career by 44 points. Cappelletty has raw power from the left side and has learned to go opposite field which has raised his average. He has started in 114 games for the Bulldogs and is a .314 career hitter. Cappelletty plays a sound first base and has a .985 career fielding percentage in 875 chances. Senior Jason Greer (Galesburg, Mich./Gull Lake) played his first season at Adrian in 2010 and batted .338 in 27 games. He will be the designated hitter and fill in at first base when needed. The second base spot will be a battle between senior Chad Williams (Paw Paw, Mich./Paw Paw) and sophomore Garrett Green (Novi, Mich./Novi). The departure of Steve Vanderheyden leaves a big hole after he graduated as one of the best infielder in program history. Williams struggled at the plate with a .172 average in 29 at-bats. Green filled in for Vanderheyden in the regionals after an injury and finished the year batting .212 in 33 at-bats. Sophomore Cody Meyer (Deshler, Ohio/Patrick Henry) returns at shortstop and had big shoes to fill as a freshman replacing Todd Meyers. Meyer did a great job in the position and will be the team’s leadoff hitter this season. He batted .364 with 40 hits in 110 at-bats and scored 31 times. Meyer also drove in 17 runs and stole nine bases in 10 tries. He also had a .432 onbase percentage. He played particularly well late in the season batting a team-high .500 in the NCAA regionals going 7-for-14 with three runs scored and a .563 onbase percentage. Senior Brian Bilius (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis) will man the hot corner at third base and has been a mainstay since his freshman season. Bilius has started in 116 career games and posted a .353 average with 106 runs scored and 86 RBI’s. He also had his best power numbers last season with six doubles and four home runs hitting .366 in 145 at-bats. Bilius ranks fifth in school history in batting average and has cracked the top ten in career hits with 146. The biggest hole to fill is left field with the graduation of Alex Cowart. Cowart rewrote the career record book at Adrian College and was a two-time MIAA Most

8

Valuable Player in 2009 and 2010. He owns the career record at AC in average (.420), hits (235), runs batted in (156), doubles (55), total bases (375), runs (164) and stolen bases (57). Junior Chris Kerekes (Lambertville, Mich./ Temperance Bedford) has been waiting his turn and brings speed and contact at the plate to the lineup. Kerekes saw action in 16 games a year ago and went 1-for-10 at the dish. Junior Kyle Strawn (Lima, Ohio/ Shawnee) is a different type of player than Kerekes with more pop to his bat. He batted .316 in 19 at-bats in 2010 and had a double and triple with three RBI’s. Senior Nate Sarkissian (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon) was pressed into duty as a freshman with an injury to Kris Powell in 2008 and has been in the starting lineup ever since. Sarkissian has started in 106 games including 83 in the last two seasons. He has a .349 career average with 126 hits, 99 runs, 23 doubles, four triples, eight home runs and 89 runs batted in. He has also stolen 25 bases in 30 attempts and has a .981 fielding percentage committing just four errors in 211 chances. Sophomore Andrew DeLuca (Westland, Mich./John Glenn) is the fastest guy on the team and will take over in right field after the departure of Andrew Anderson. DeLuca will likely hit second in the lineup making a dynamic speed tandem along with Meyer. He hit .318 in 44 at-bats as a freshman and showed he is ready for the challenge of a full-time assignment. DeLuca stole four bases and drove in five runs in 2010.

Nate Sarkissian enters his senior season with a .349 career batting average, 99 runs and 89 RBI’s.

NICOLAY FIELD

Nicolay Field

The Adrian College baseball team has the privilege of playing in one of the finest Division III facilities in the country. Nicolay Field was dedicated in 2008 and the Bulldogs just completed their third season at the ballpark. They also had the opportunity to host the 2009 NCAA Mideast Regional. Nicolay Field is named in honor of Bud and Betty Nicolay, whose generous contributions helped build the estimated $1 million project. The stadium groundbreaking ceremony took place in September 2007 and special guest speaker Ernie Harwell, Hall of Fame baseball broadcaster with the Detroit Tigers, delivered the keynote address about what a great thing was being done for future generations of baseball players at Adrian College. The Bulldogs had been playing baseball at Riverside Park in Adrian for nearly 60 years before the construction of Nicolay Field. Bud Nicolay is the retired president of Kar Nut Products Company, Inc. The company was started in the 1930’s when its founders roasted peanuts for the fans at Tiger Stadium in downtown Detroit. In 1971, Bud began his long service as a member of the Adrian College Board of Trustees, representing the Detroit Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. In 1980, Bud was elected as a Trustee-At-Large, and he continues to serve with distinction on the board today. In 1991, Bud was awarded an honorary doctorate in recognition of his steadfast support, and he continues to be actively engaged in the life of the College. Nicolay Field has state-of-the-art amenities including a field completely covered in field turf by ProGrass, an inningby-inning scoreboard, an underground drainage system, professional baseball caliber dugouts, bullpens and batting cages. The facility also has grandstand chairback seating on top of the dugouts for a capacity of 300, a heated press box facility for media and broadcasters, lighting for night games, locker rooms, a training room, restrooms and a concession stand. The press box is dedicated in the honor of Frank and Shirley Dick, longtime supporters of Adrian College. Nicolay Field is located on the College campus near the MultiSport Performance Stadium. The stadium can be accessed via Stratford Avenue off of West Maumee Street.
