COACHING STAFF Head Coach John Sung

4th Season (30-14) jsung@adrian.edu 517-265-5161 Ext. 4000 John Sung will begin his fourth season as the head women’s lacrosse coach at Adrian College. Sung is a pioneer of women’s lacrosse having coached the team since its inception three years ago. He has compiled a 30-14 record in those three previous seasons, including an impressive 10-4 record in 2009 and a school record 14-3 mark in 2010. The 2010 squad established themselves as a dominant force. They won 13 straight games during the season and had a loss against then #1 Franklin & Marshall among their three defeats. The team went 6-0 at home and outscored their opponent, 322-126, for the season. The team scored 20 or more goals in nine games and nine players on the team had double-digit goal totals. Rachel Johnston, Amanda Lambert and Cassie Hoyez were all named IWLCA All-Region in 2010. The program really took a step forward in 2009 under Sung’s guidance. The team increased their schedule strength and still managed to pull off 10 wins and nearly qualify for the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Bulldogs finished the season ranked third in the final NCAA West Regional rankings and narrowly missed out on an at-large bid. Rachel Johnston and Amanda Lambert were both named First Team AllWest Region by the IWLCA, while goaltender Laura Finfrock was named Second Team All-West Region in 2009. Sung guided the Bulldogs through their inaugural season in 2008 as the only varsity program in the state of Michigan. The Bulldogs got off to a fantastic start winning their first four games, including a season-opening 10-1 win at Waynesburg. Sung’s first squad finished the season with a 6-7 overall record, but managed a very impressive 4-1 record at home. Sung also had a remarkable opportunity to be a head coach in the 2009 Lacrosse World Cup in Prague, Czech Republic. He led the Haudenosaunee Nation, a mixture of Native American Nations, to a 11th place finish out of 16 teams. Sung was the only NCAA Division III head coach to be asked to serve as head coach. The coaching philosophy for Sung remains to bring in quality student-athletes who represent Adrian College both on and off the field in a positive manner. He also puts a heavy emphasis on academic success coupled with assisting in the community whenever possible. Sung came to Adrian from the University of Michigan, where he had spent five years as the assistant women’s club lacrosse coach. Four of the five Wolverine teams that Sung helped to coach have made appearances in the USL-WDIA final four. The Wolverines accumulated a 93-22 record while he was the assistant coach. Also while at U of M, Sung was in charge of recruiting for the team and had one goalie tabbed as the pre-season player of the year. A longtime trainer of goalies, Sung has held various coaching positions with Birmingham Seaholm High School and the Detroit Lacrosse Club. He has been the assistant director of the Great Lakes Women’s Lacrosse Camp since 1997. As a player, Sung was a captain of the Oakland University lacrosse team from 1996-1997. He was also a member of two International Cup Championship teams. Sung earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in communications from Oakland University.

Assistant Coach Emilia Ward

3rd Season eward@adrian.edu 517-265-5161 Ext. 4000 Emilia Ward returns for her third season as the assistant women’s lacrosse coach at Adrian College. She joined the program in July 2008 and has done a great job helping build a strong program. Ward has worked very closely with a talented group of young players who have benefitted from her instruction. Last year, the Adrian Bulldogs ranked second in NCAA Division III in scoring offense (18.94 goals per game), 10th in scoring defense (7.41 goals per game) and first in scoring margin (+11.53 goals per game). Ward is a 2008 graduate of Manhattan College earning her bachelor’s degree in communications with an emphasis in broadcast and corporate concentrations. Ward played four years at Manhattan College, a Division I program, and excelled both on and off the field. She made the honor roll in all eight semesters and was named to the dean’s list four times. She also was a member of Lambda Pi Eta Honors Society for two years and served as the treasurer during her senior year. On the field, Ward started all 14 games as a senior and registered three goals and 16 assists for the Jaspers. She also played in 10 games and started four times as a junior and had two goals and four assists. After each of the last three years, she has been named MAAC All-Academic. Ward prepped at Farmington Hills Mercy High School and helped lead her team to a state championship in 2004. She earned First Team All-State honors as a junior and senior. She held her school scoring record of 58 goals in a season upon graduation. She also excelled in field hockey earning Honorable Mention All-State plaudits as a junior and senior. Ward also was a team captain on the ice hockey squad at Mercy as a junior and senior. Ward has coaching experience at the Detroit Lacrosse Club during the summer months since 2005. She has also assisted at the University of Michigan women’s lacrosse camp (2007) and the Michigan State University women’s lacrosse clinic (2006, 2007).

SEASON PREVIEW The biggest news during the off-season for the women’s lacrosse team was that they are now a part of the Midwest Women’s Lacrosse Conference. This is the first season that the team will compete in a conference and have been independent for the first three seasons of competition. “The conference championship is our number one goal this season,” said fourth-year head coach John Sung. “We are very excited to be a part of the MWLC and winning the league title would be a special thing. Being first to do something is always a little more meaningful.” The Bulldogs are a heavy favorite to win this season’s MWLC title having been named the preseason top pick by the coaches. They received seven first-place votes and a maximum of 49 points in the balloting. A year ago, Adrian played five current members of the MWLC and defeated them by a 120-30 margin. “We are going to have to stay focused and forget about how we did last year against current conference teams,” said Sung. “I know we have the talent to win, but the focus needs to be there every game.” The start of the schedule this season will be challenging as the Bulldogs will play three teams that all qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2010. Christopher Newport compiled a 13-7 record and won the USA South title with a 7-0 record. Drew (N.J.) went 10-9 overall but did have a 4-1 record in the Landmark Conference. Salisbury is the defending national champion having gone 21-1 last year. They will begin the 2011 season as the preseason number one in Division III. “We have narrowly missed out on the NCAA Tournament in the past and our schedule will make or break us,” said Sung. “We play our toughest schedule to date and win those games and you could be in the driver’s seat. Lose those games and you stay home. We need to play the best in order to measure our program.” This year’s group of players have a lot of experience and this just might be the year that Adrian dances. The roster consists of three seniors who have been with the program since its inception in 2008. Andrea Soloko (Northville, Mich./Northville H.S.) is playing lacrosse full-time this year after splitting time with hockey for the past three years. Soloko provides leadership and 36 games of experience to the lineup. She has scored 37 goals and dished out nine assists in her career. “Andrea will be asked to be a team leader and she has accepted that role,” commented Sung. “We have a strong core of seniors and juniors. The program has been built up and established over the past three years and hopefully this year all the pieces come together at the right time.” Mariana DiGiovanni (Troy, Mich./Troy H.S.) and Amanda Faraone (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor H.S.) round out the senior class for the Bulldogs. DiGiovanni has seen her role change with added depth on the team. She scored 41 goals her freshman year with no assists but over the past two years her goal totals have dropped with her assist totals on the rise. She has 29 assists over the past two years and 30 goals during that time. DiGiovanni has played in 44 games and has 100 points for the black and gold. Faraone has spent a majority of her career as a backup goalie. She has played in 27 contests for a total of 1,059 minutes and made 132 saves with a record of 7-7. The juniors are the cornerstone of the program with 10 players on the roster. The main weapons on offense are Rachel Johnston (St. Catharines, Ont./Denis Morris) and Amanda Lambert (Sloatsburg, N.Y./Suffern H.S.). “We have a duo of Johnston and Lambert that are both phenomenal talents,” said Sung. “They can score from just about anywhere and if given the opportunity to score will cash in on it. I expect the same consistency this year from both of them. The numbers don’t lie when it comes to their success.”

6

Johnston ranked 13th in Division III in points (101) a year ago and led the team with 69 goals. She also tied for the team lead with 32 assists. Johnston scored five game-winning goals and also had 31 ground balls, 39 draw controls and 14 caused turnovers. Lambert ranked 31st in Division III in points (88) last season and scored 56 goals while tying Johnston with 32 assists. Both ladies have been named All-West Region during their first two seasons at Adrian College. Lindsey Day (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview H.S.) is another solid secondary scorer for the Bulldogs. She increased her offensive production from her freshman to sophomore year going from 41 points to 74 points. Day played in 17 contests a year ago and tallied 56 goals and 18 assists. She also had two gamewinning goals to her credit. Katrina Rabishaw (Sharon, Ont./Sacred Heart Catholic) returns to lead the defense for the Bulldogs. She helped Adrian allow 7.41 goals per game in 2010 which ranked 10th-best in Division III. Rabishaw has played in 30 career games with 27 ground balls and 17 caused turnovers. The sophomore class returns Stacey Birlson (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe H.S.), Olivia Duncan (Orangeville, Ont./ Orangeville District), Heather Newblom (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) and Cassie Hoyez (Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial H.S.) as prominent players who made an impact in 2010. Birlson is a returning starter who played in all 17 games as a freshman as an attacker. She scored 50 goals and dished out 29 assists for a total of 79 points. She ranked third on the team in scoring and also had 40 ground balls and 12 draw controls. Duncan played in 16 contests and totaled 16 points with 10 goals and six assists. Newblom played in 17 games as a midfielder and had 12 goals and a pair of assists. Hoyez played defensive midfield for the Bulldogs as a freshman and was named Second Team All-West Region. She scored four goals and tallied one assist to go with 43 ground balls, 48 draw controls and 18 caused turnovers. This year’s freshman class is also one of the strongest to come in under Sung and they will be chomping at the bit to prove themselves right away. Mary Accomando (Beverly, Mass./Beverly H.S.) is a Boston area native and proved in the prep ranks that she can put the ball in the back of the net. Accomando was named a NEC All-Star in 2009 and 2010 and was a four-year letterwinner at Beverly High School. Hannah Early (Shelburne, Ont./Centre Dufferin) will likely start as a defender and she comes highly touted from the Great White North. She was named team MVP for three years and was also selected as Senior Female Athlete of the Year in Centre Dufferin in Shelburne, Ontario. Jul Tehovnik (Moon Township, Pa./Sewickly Academy) will likely get the starting nod in goal for the Bulldogs. Tehovnik was a starter on a prominent high school program which made three state semifinal appearances.

ADRIAN COLLEGE Adrian College evolved from a theological institute founded by the Wesleyan Methodist denomination at Leoni, Michigan, a small town east of Jackson, in 1845. In 1855 this institute united with the Leoni Seminary, a Methodist Protestant institution, to establish Michigan Union College. Legend states that members of the College became concerned about the environment at Leoni, which was nicknamed “Whiskey Town.” In 1859, this concern and other circumstances made it advisable to relocate or close. In the same year, Dr. Asa Mahan, pastor of the Plymouth Congregational Church in Adrian and a well-known educator, was encouraged by citizens of the community to establish a college. Mahan had served as the first president of Oberlin College and, before that, as an officer of Lane Theological Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Mahan and his colleagues invited the officials and supporters of the closing Michigan Union College to join in establishing the new college at Adrian. After the invitation was accepted, the story says, the library holdings were loaded on an ox-cart in March 1859, and transported 60 miles to the new campus site on the west side of Adrian. On March 28, 1859, Adrian College was chartered by the Michigan legislature as a degreegranting institution with Dr. Mahan as its first president. Through a series of consolidations and denomination unifications, the College has maintained its relationship with The United Methodist Church. For almost 100 years, the campus consisted of several brick buildings stretching along Madison Street. Most of today’s campus was woods and fields. In the mid-1950s, the College, encouraged by the generosity of Ray W. Herrick, embarked in a building program that established the basis for the current campus. Today, when students walk in the area bounded on the east by Madison Street and edged by Downs Hall, Valade Hall, Cornelius House and Herrick Tower, they tread on the same ground that students hurried across in 1859 as they rushed to classes, meals and social events. Now, however, the campus consists of 100 acres, over 20 academic and service buildings and 10 residence halls, plus apartments and themed housing.
