ADRIAN COLLEGE Adrian College evolved from a theological institute founded by the Wesleyan Methodist denomination at Leoni, Michigan, a small town east of Jackson, in 1845. In 1855 this institute united with the Leoni Seminary, a Methodist Protestant institution, to establish Michigan Union College.

PLAYER BIOS

Legend states that members of the College became concerned about the environment at Leoni, which was nicknamed “Whiskey Town.” In 1859, this concern and other circumstances made it advisable to relocate or close. In the same year, Dr. Asa Mahan, pastor of the Plymouth Congregational Church in Adrian and a well-known educator, was encouraged by citizens of the community to establish a college. Mahan had served as the first president of Oberlin College and, before that, as an officer of Lane Theological Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Mahan and his colleagues invited the officials and supporters of the closing Michigan Union College to join in establishing the new college at Adrian. After the invitation was accepted, the story says, the library holdings were loaded on an oxcart in March 1859, and transported 60 miles to the new campus site on the west side of Adrian. On March 28, 1859, Adrian College was chartered by the Michigan legislature as a degreegranting institution with Dr. Mahan as its first president. Through a series of consolidations and denomination unifications, the College has maintained its relationship with The United Methodist Church. For almost 100 years, the campus consisted of several brick buildings stretching along Madison Street. Most of today’s campus was woods and fields. In the mid-1950s, the College, encouraged by the generosity of Ray W. Herrick, embarked in a building program that established the basis for the current campus. Today, when students walk in the area bounded on the east by Madison Street and edged by Downs Hall, Valade Hall, Cornelius House and Herrick Tower, they tread on the same ground that students hurried across in 1859 as they rushed to classes, meals and social events. Now, however, the campus consists of 100 acres, over 20 academic and service buildings and 10 residence halls, plus apartments and themed housing.

ADRIAN COLLEGE RECOGNIZED AS A COLLEGE WITH THE “LEAST STUDENT DEBT LOAD” UPON GRADUATION In its 2011 edition of America’s “Best Colleges,” U.S. News & World Report ranks Adrian College as one of the top five schools in the Midwest of Regional Colleges to have the least student debt load upon graduation. This is the third consecutive year that Adrian College has been featured and singled out by U.S. News and World Report. In its 2009 edition of America’s “Best Colleges” and again in 2010, Adrian College received top billing as a school to watch and as the #1 Up-and-Coming School in the Midwest. “Affordability is the top parental concern that parents express with respect to their child’s education,” said Adrian College President Jeffrey R. Docking. “We’re extremely pleased that U.S. News and World Report ranked us in the top five Midwest colleges that have students graduating with a lower debt.”

NICOLAY FIELD

Nicolay Field

The Adrian College baseball team has the privilege of playing in one of the finest Division III facilities in the country. Nicolay Field was dedicated in 2008 and the Bulldogs just completed their fourth season at the ballpark. They also had the opportunity to host the 2009 NCAA Mideast Regional. Nicolay Field is named in honor of Bud and Betty Nicolay, whose generous contributions helped build the estimated $1 million project. The stadium groundbreaking ceremony took place in September 2007 and special guest speaker Ernie Harwell, Hall of Fame baseball broadcaster with the Detroit Tigers, delivered the keynote address about what a great thing was being done for future generations of baseball players at Adrian College. The Bulldogs had been playing baseball at Riverside Park in Adrian for nearly 60 years before the construction of Nicolay Field. Bud Nicolay is the retired president of Kar Nut Products Company, Inc. The company was started in the 1930’s when its founders roasted peanuts for the fans at Tiger Stadium in downtown Detroit. In 1971, Bud began his long service as a member of the Adrian College Board of Trustees, representing the Detroit Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. In 1980, Bud was elected as a Trustee-At-Large, and he continues to serve with distinction on the board today. In 1991, Bud was awarded an honorary doctorate in recognition of his steadfast support, and he continues to be actively engaged in the life of the College. Nicolay Field has state-of-the-art amenities including a field completely covered in field turf by ProGrass, an inningby-inning scoreboard, an underground drainage system, professional baseball caliber dugouts, bullpens and batting cages. The facility also has grandstand chairback seating on top of the dugouts for a capacity of 300, a heated press box facility for media and broadcasters, lighting for night games, locker rooms, a training room, restrooms and a concession stand. The press box is dedicated in the honor of Frank and Shirley Dick, longtime supporters of Adrian College. Nicolay Field is located on the College campus near the MultiSport Performance Stadium. The stadium can be accessed via Stratford Avenue off of West Maumee Street.
