COACHING STAFF Head Coach Rachel Cibulas

1st Season (0-0) rcibulas@adrian.edu 517-265-5161 Ext. 4000 The Adrian College athletic department welcomes the addition of Rachel Cibulas as the head coach of the women’s lacrosse program. The program had been under the direction of John Sung for the first four years of existance. Cibulas is no stranger to Adrian College as she served as assistant coach during the first year of the program’s existance in 2008. The Bulldogs compiled a 6-7 record during that season and Cibulas was largely responsible for recruiting one of the largest and most talented classes in NCAA Division III. “I’m very excited about coming back to Adrian College,” said Cibulas. “I know that the program has been successful over the past four years and I have a lot of respect for Adrian College as a great academic and athletic institution. I want the program to continue to climb each year and build upon making the NCAA Tournament last season. The team has a lot of talent returning and they have a great deal of experience. I can’t wait to get started.” Cibulas gained valuable experience during the 2011 season as the head coach at NCAA Division II Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, N.C. Lenoir-Rhyne compiled a 6-10 record in their first year as a program under Cibulas. She was in charge of all facets of the program. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native coached a pair of teams in her hometown as assistant coach at Bethel Park High School in 2010 and as head coach of the Intrepid Girls Lacrosse Club from May 2009 to August 2010. While at Bethel Park, Cibulas helped the team to a four-win improvement going 10-6 in 2010. The squad also made its first-ever WPIAL playoff appearance and Cibulas coached three all-sectional players. “We are thrilled to have Rachel back at Adrian College,” said athletic director Mike Duffy. “She has learned a lot from her experiences over the past few years and she is ready to guide our women’s lacrosse program in the future. She is a hard-working person who will demand excellence on the field and in the classroom.” Cibulas joined Slippery Rock University in June 2008 after leaving the Bulldog program. She was in charge of goalkeeping and defensive units for The Rock and coached two all-league student athletes. Cibulas played collegiately at Robert Morris University (Pa.) and was a letterwinner for the Colonials for three years. She was named team captain for both the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons and was the first female player to sign a National Letter of Intent for the Colonial lacrosse program. She graduated from Robert Morris University in May 2007 with a bachelor of science in business administation. She completed her master of science in sport management from Slippery Rock University in May 2010.

1st Season ccuneo@adrian.edu 517-265-5161 Ext. 5018 Rachel Cibulas is pleased to announce the hiring of Carolyn (CJ) Cuneo as the assistant coach at Adrian College; the Long Island native brings a wealth of experience to Adrian College. Cuneo will be responsible for the goalkeeping and defensive units while here at Adrian, while also coordinating camps and overseeing the recruiting process. Most recently she was the head coach at James River High School (VA) during the 2010 and 2011 seasons. She coached the team to an undefeated conference schedule in 2011. During the 2009 season, Cuneo was an assistant coach at Randolph-Macon College (VA). Cuneo was responsible for the goalkeepers and practice planning. Cuneo played between the pipes at Binghamton in New York while also working with a local club team, The Long Island Pride. Cuneo graduated from Binghamton in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. She most recently earned her J.D. from the University of Richmond and passed the bar exam. Cuneo resides in Adrian.

SEASON PREVIEW For the first time in the Adrian College women’s lacrosse history, a new head coach will be roaming the sidelines. However, it is a familiar face to those who were around for the inaugural season of women’s lacrosse. Rachel Cibulas was the first assistant coach under John Sung and she is back to continue the prominence that he established over the past four years. Sung accepted a head coaching job at Winthrop University, a Division I institution in South Carolina that will begin its program in the spring of 2013. Cibulas comes back to Adrian College after a one-year stint as a head coach at Lenoir-Rhyne University, a Division II school in North Carolina. “I’m very excited to be back at Adrian College and hopefully move this program beyond the already lofty expectations set by the team and coach Sung,” said Cibulas. “We will work very hard to accomplish our team goals of winning the conference and winning a game in the NCAA Tournament.” The Bulldogs won the Midwest Women’s Lacrosse Conference regular season and tournament titles in the first year of its existance. Adrian cruised to a 7-0 record in league play and breezed through the tournament en route to the program’s first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Adrian traveled to Gettysburg College and were defeated but gained a lot of valuable experience against a team that would eventually win the national championship. “We have a lot of players back from last year’s team and several of those players have been playing regularly since their freshmen seasons,” said Cibulas. “Gettysburg was a challenge we were not ready for because we had not played everyone of that caliber in the program’s brief history. A lot of people still don’t realize how young our program is and how long it takes to build a champion.” Cibulas will walk into a great situation as 18 letterwinners return including 10 starters from a team that set a schoolrecord with a 16-5 record in 2011. The Bulldogs return four players in particular who garnered All-Region honors a year ago. Senior Rachel Johnston (St. Catharines, Ont.) was selected First Team All-West Region for the third year in a row. Johnston was a main reason why Adrian led Division III in scoring offense in 2011 averaging 18.3 goals per game. She tallied 89 goals as a junior and ranked second in Division III in total goals. Johnston added 11 assists for an even 100 points ranking her 13th nationally in Division III for total points. She has been a consistent scoring threat since she set foot on campus with 90 points as a freshman, 101 as a sophomore and 100 more as a junior for a grand total of 291. She has scored 241 goals in just 52 games for the Bulldogs ranking first in school history in goals, points and shots on goal (338).

Senior Amanda Lambert (Sloatsburg, N.Y.) is a great compliment to Johnston and was named First Team All-West Region for the third straight year in 2011. In addition, she brought home MWLC Player of the Year hardware. Lambert ended last season with 70 goals and 31 assists. She ranked 11th nationally in Division III in points, 25th in goals and 42nd in assists. Lambert has a very accurate shot as 88.3 percent of her shots were on goal. She scored 14 freeposition goals and also had 41 ground balls, 37 draw controls and two gamewinning goals. Junior Stacey Birlson (Centennial, Colo.) was named Second Team AllRegion a year ago after a breakout season. She led the team with 105 points and 76 assists. She also had 29 goals, 21 ground balls, 13 draw controls and 12 caused turnovers. She led the nation in assists and was ninth nationally in points. She was named First Team All-MWLC and three times had over 10 points in a game. She tied the Division III single-game record for assists with 11 at Fontbonne on April 16. Junior Cassie Hoyez (Circle Pines, Minn.) was named Second Team All-Region for the second year in a row in 2011. Hoyez started in all 21 games and ended with 10 goals and seven assists from her defensive position. Hoyez had 17 of her 18 shots on goal and also had a game-winner versus Lynchburg on March 19. She collected 42 ground balls, 65 draw controls and caused 30 turnovers. Hoyez was also a First Team All-MWLC member in the league’s inaugural season. The senior class for the Bulldogs will be especially strong as Lindsey Day (Apple Valley, Minn.) returns to form a strong nucleus with Johnston and Lambert. Day has played in 52 career games heading into her senior campaign. She has scored 135 goals and added 43 assists for a total of 178 points. She had 46 goals and 17 assists (63 points) as a junior and also had 34 ground balls, five draw controls and 10 caused turnovers. Junior Olivia Duncan (Orangeville, Ont.) is also a dangerous weapon on offense for the Bulldogs. Her freshman year she compiled 10 goals in 16 games. She really increased her goal production with 42 goals in 19 games as a sophomore. Duncan ended the season with 51 points and had 62-of-69 shots on net. She had eight gamewinning goals, 14 ground balls, nine draw controls and six caused turnovers. In net the Bulldogs return senior Laura Finfrock (Deerfield, Ill.) who played in just one game last season. She played in 14 games as a freshman and 17 more as a sophomore. Finfrock played 817-plus minutes with a 7.63 goals against average in 2010. She also had a .477 save percentage and a 13-3 record in net. She has a 23-7 career record and has made 194 saves in 32 career games.

MWLC CONFERENCE

The Midwest Women’s Lacrosse Conference (MWLC) was founded in 2010 and began play during the spring of 2011.

Martin has a Master’s degree in sports management from the University of Richmond in Richmond, Virginia (August, 1996) and he holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Whittier College in Whittier, California (May, 1994). In addition to serving on the Management Council, Martin also served three years as a member of the executive committee for the Division III Commissioner’s Association before being elected president of that group in January 2009. He is currently the chair of the Division III Commissioner’s Association’s marketing committee.

The conference is composed of eight NCAA Division III colleges and universities located throughout the Midwest. The MWLC claims representatives from the states of Michigan (Adrian and Albion Colleges),Wisconsin (Carthage College and Concordia University), Indiana (Trine University), Ohio (College of Mount St. Joseph), Missouri (Fontbonne University), and Illinois (North Central College).

Mike Krizman was named the assistant commissioner/sports information director for the Midwest Women’s Lacrosse Conference (MWLC) in 2011.

Augustana College, located in Rock Island, Ill., Aurora University, located in Aurora, Ill., and Benedictine University, located in Lisle, Ill., will join the Midwest Women’s Lacrosse Conference beginning in the spring of 2013.

Before joining the CCIW, Krizman spent two years working as a graduate assistant in the media relations department at Illinois State University. He earned his bachelor’s (2003) degree in mass communication and master’s (2005) degree in sports management, both at ISU.

Beloit College, located in Beloit, Wis., will begin play in the MWLC in the spring of 2013, while the University of Dubuque, located in Dubuque, Iowa, will begin conference play in the spring of 2014. Elmhurst College, located in Elmhurst, Ill., will begin play in the spring of 2015. Adrian won the conference’s first-ever regular season title in 2011, going 7-0 against its MWLC counterparts. The Bulldogs also went on to win the MWLC Tournament. Carthage, Trine and North Central also qualified for the conference’s firstever postseason tournament. Chris Martin was named the commissioner of the Midwest Women’s Lacrosse Conference (MWLC) in 2011. He is currently in his 10th season as commissioner of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) and is the chair of the NCAA Division III Management Council. In January 2009, Martin became a member of the NCAA Division III Management Council after serving four years as a member of the NCAA Division III Membership Committee. In January 2010, Martin assumed the role of vice chair of the Division III Management Council. Following the 2011 NCAA Convention, Martin assumed the role of chair of the Division III Management Council, a term that will run for one year (January 2011 to January 2012).

He is currently in his seventh season as the assistant commissioner/sports information director of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW).

During his tenure as a graduate assistant he served as the primary contact for the Redbirds’ track & field and cross country teams. He also assisted the assistant athletics director for media relations in day-to-day publicity of the ISU football team. He was a member of the stat crew for the Missouri Valley Conference basketball tournament for two years and served as the media contact for the 2004 Missouri Valley Conference Track & Field Championships. In addition, Krizman worked on the 2003 and 2004 football game programs that were judged “Best in the Nation” by CoSIDA, and also contributed to the 2003-04 men’s basketball game program that was judged one of the top three in the nation by CoSIDA. As an undergraduate he was the sports editor of the Daily Vidette, the ISU student newspaper, where his responsibilities ranged from publication layout, assigning coverage, preparing features and covering football, men’s basketball and track and field. He has an associate of arts degree from the College of Lake County in Grayslake, Ill. (2001) where he served as the sports editor of the College of Lake County Chronicle.

ADRIAN COLLEGE Adrian College evolved from a theological institute founded by the Wesleyan Methodist denomination at Leoni, Michigan, a small town east of Jackson, in 1845. In 1855 this institute united with the Leoni Seminary, a Methodist Protestant institution, to establish Michigan Union College. Legend states that members of the College became concerned about the environment at Leoni, which was nicknamed “Whiskey Town.” In 1859, this concern and other circumstances made it advisable to relocate or close. In the same year, Dr. Asa Mahan, pastor of the Plymouth Congregational Church in Adrian and a well-known educator, was encouraged by citizens of the community to establish a college. Mahan had served as the first president of Oberlin College and, before that, as an officer of Lane Theological Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Mahan and his colleagues invited the officials and supporters of the closing Michigan Union College to join in establishing the new college at Adrian. After the invitation was accepted, the story says, the library holdings were loaded on an ox-cart in March 1859, and transported 60 miles to the new campus site on the west side of Adrian. On March 28, 1859, Adrian College was chartered by the Michigan legislature as a degreegranting institution with Dr. Mahan as its first president. Through a series of consolidations and denomination unifications, the College has maintained its relationship with The United Methodist Church. For almost 100 years, the campus consisted of several brick buildings stretching along Madison Street. Most of today’s campus was woods and fields. In the mid-1950s, the College, encouraged by the generosity of Ray W. Herrick, embarked in a building program that established the basis for the current campus. Today, when students walk in the area bounded on the east by Madison Street and edged by Downs Hall, Valade Hall, Cornelius House and Herrick Tower, they tread on the same ground that students hurried across in 1859 as they rushed to classes, meals and social events. Now, however, the campus consists of 100 acres, over 20 academic and service buildings and 10 residence halls, plus apartments and themed housing.
