Craig Rainey has established a very successful track record as the head coach of the Adrian College baseball program now entering his 20th season. Rainey and his Bulldogs have become a fixture in the NCAA Mideast Regionals playing in five straight entering 2013. Rainey has guided the program to five straight 30-win seasons including a school-record 37 wins a year ago. The team has also had 10 straight winning seasons under Rainey with a record of 288-138 (.676) over the past decade. The Bulldogs have won or shared six of the last eight MIAA championships and have four straight outright MIAA crowns including winning the inaugural conference tournament last season. In 2012, Adrian compiled a record of 37-10 and were ranked 26th in the preseason. The Bulldogs had a strong spring trip and ascended to #11 in the polls. Adrian finished the season ranked 12th in NCAA Division III. Adrian advanced to the NCAA Mideast Regional held at Marietta and won twice over Wooster and La Roche before bowing to the eventual national champion host Pioneers. In 2011, Adrian captured its third straight MIAA title under Rainey. The Bulldogs compiled an overall record of 31-11 and were 24-4 in conference games. The team advanced to the Mideast Regional in Marietta, Ohio and dropped a pair of heartbreaking one-run games in the ninth inning each time. Brian Bilius was named MIAA Position Player of the Year and a Third Team All-American at third base. David Partyka was named MIAA Pitcher of the Year. Four other players were named First Team All-MIAA in 2011. Bilius and Partyka were also named All-Region as well as Ryan Domschot. In 2010, Adrian compiled a team batting average of .341 which ranked 56th in Division III. In addition, the Bulldogs ranked 21st in team ERA. Adrian was 13-5 at Nicolay Field and won 12 straight games during the season from Apr. 1 to Apr. 17. AC advanced to the Mideast Regional hosted by Marietta and defeated Washington & Jefferson in 10 innings in game one. They then dropped close contests to Heidelberg and Thomas More. Adrian has won at least one game in every regional under Rainey. Coach Rainey coached the MIAA Player of the Year, Alex Cowart, and Pitcher of the Year, Josh Lancaster. Cowart also was named ABCA Second Team AllAmerican. In 2009, Adrian set an MIAA record by winning the league with a 25-3 record. The team hosted the 2009 NCAA Mideast Regional at Nicolay Field for the first time in school history and finished third. Adrian was bounced out of the regionals by eventual national runnerup College of Wooster, but did pick up wins against Rose-Hulman (9-8) and Heidelberg (3-1). AC bounced back after an opening game loss to Marietta to win those two games and finish the regional at 2-2. The team went 33-11 overall and Rainey coached both the MIAA Pitcher of the Year in Ryan Domschot and co-MIAA Position Players of the Year in Todd Meyers and Alex Cowart. Cowart and Domschot

The Bulldogs then compiled two wins in the nationals over Linfield and Kean on their way to finishing fourth in Division III after a third-place game loss to Wisconsin-Whitewater. Rainey was named Mideast Regional Coach of the Year. In 19 seasons at the helm, Rainey has become the program’s winningest coach. In 2006, the Bulldogs won their second straight MIAA crown, sharing the title with co-champion Hope College. Ranked fifth in the Mideast region at season’s end, the 2006 squad was 25-15 overall and 21-7 in the conference. The 2005 squad won the MIAA title and made the school’s first NCAA Tournament appearance. The 2005 Bulldogs set school records for wins (27) and ended the season ranked fourth in the Mideast region. Rainey has mentored 34 all-region performers, as well as 62 first-team All-MIAA players. He has also produced seven conference MVPs and four league most valuable pitchers. We think “DIFFERENTLY.”

Jeffrey R. Docking President of Adrian College “Great things are happening here, and I would love for you to become a part of it. I am a firm believer that small liberal arts colleges like this one offer the best undergraduate education available and we at Adrian are determined to achieve excellence in this endeavor. I invite you to discover more about what can happen for you here. Learn about our small classes, about our devoted faculty who put students first, and about our dedication to helping you prepare for success. This is a place where you will discover your potential, and where you will leave your personal mark. If you become involved in all that Adrian has to offer, I am convinced that you will not only acquire the knowledge and skills for success well beyond college, but you will also find these next four years to be the most enjoyable and gratifying in your life.”

MiLes from Detroit

We are a campus of confidence, heart, and determination. We aren’t your average college experience ... we are distinctive. We are made up of achievers, believers, entrepreneurs, and leaders. We are more than simply a “small college,” we are the roots of change. We inspire, ignite, and grow here. It’s getting your master’s degree in five years; it’s being a scholar, an athlete, and a humanitarian ... but more than just a number.

Do you have the “bulldog mentality?” 24

It’s not about winning championships... but let’s face it, that is what we do here. We throw winning passes, hit home runs, score hat-tricks, and serve up wins in nearly every sport on campus. Maybe it’s because our athletes are strong — both in their sports and in their classes. The average GPA for our student athlete is above a 3.0, and with over 50% of our student body involved in some form of athletic activity, that says something. Actually, it says a lot.

We value a winning tradition on and off the court, the field, the ice or wherever our students spend their training time. Visit adrianbulldogs.com for more information

NICOLAY FIELD

Nicolay Field

The Adrian College baseball team has the privilege of playing in one of the finest Division III facilities in the country. Nicolay Field was dedicated in 2008 and the Bulldogs just completed their fifth season at the ballpark. They also had the opportunity to host the 2009 NCAA Mideast Regional and the inaugural 2012 MIAA Tournament. Nicolay Field is named in honor of Bud and Betty Nicolay, whose generous contributions helped build the estimated $1 million project. The stadium ground-breaking ceremony took place in September 2007 and special guest speaker Ernie Harwell, Hall of Fame baseball broadcaster with the Detroit Tigers, delivered the keynote address about what a great thing was being done for future generations of baseball players at Adrian College. The Bulldogs had been playing baseball at Riverside Park in Adrian for nearly 60 years before the construction of Nicolay Field. Bud Nicolay is the retired president of Kar Nut Products Company, Inc. The company was started in the 1930’s when its founders roasted peanuts for the fans at Tiger Stadium in downtown Detroit. In 1971, Bud began his long service as a member of the Adrian College Board of Trustees, representing the Detroit Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. In 1980, Bud was elected as a Trustee-At-Large, and he continues to serve with distinction on the board today. In 1991, Bud was awarded an honorary doctorate in recognition of his steadfast support, and he continues to be actively engaged in the life of the College. Nicolay Field has state-of-the-art amenities including a field completely covered in field turf by ProGrass, an inningby-inning scoreboard, an underground drainage system, professional baseball caliber dugouts, bullpens and batting cages. The facility also has grandstand chair-back seating on top of the dugouts for a capacity of 300, a heated press box facility for media and broadcasters, lighting for night games, locker rooms, a training room, restrooms and a concession stand. The press box is dedicated in the honor of Frank and Shirley Dick, longtime supporters of Adrian College. Nicolay Field is located on the College campus near the MultiSport Performance Stadium. The stadium can be accessed via Stratford Avenue off of West Maumee Street.
