Merillat Sport and Fitness Center

Built in 1990, the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center provides educational, recreation and fitness facilities for all Adrian College students, faculty members and staff. The 80,000 square-foot complex includes a multi-sport forum for general recreational use with courts for basketball, volleyball and tennis, surrounded by a onetenth mile indoor track. The Merillat also houses a conditioning room, classrooms, a physiology laboratory, and Vivian Wellness Center, as well as a performance gymnasium which seats 1,300 persons and serves as home to the Bulldog basketball and volleyball teams. Offices of the exercise science/physical education department faculty and athletic department coaches and administrators are also contained in the building. The Merillat Center is named in honor of Orville and Ruth Merillat, civic and business leaders in the community of Adrian for many years, whose leadership gift to the project provided the impetus for construction.

Adrian Track & Field Complex

The Adrian College track and field complex received rave reviews after hosting its first outdoor meet from the track and field community. The red eight-lane, all-weather Polyurethane Tartan surface is designed as a Olympic-style track with an irrigated in-field for throwing and jumping events only. The complex was completed in 2008 and features two discus throw cages, two shot put sectors, two long jump runways with sand pits on the north and south ends, a pole vault runway with vault boxes on the north and south ends, a javelin throw runway, a hammer throw cage, a high jump area, a steeplechase pit, college and high school lane markings and a Daktronics scoreboard in sync with our Fully Automatic Timing System.

Coaching Staff

Ben Carlson • Head Coach • 1st Year Wartburg ‘06 517-265-5161 x. 4138 bcarlson@adrian.edu

Quinton Harley • Sprints/Hurdles • 1st Year East Carolina ‘13 517-265-5161 x. 5005 qharley@adrian.edu

Ben Carlson is in his first season as the head coach of the Adrian College cross country and track and field team. Carlson spent this past year at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, as assistant coach for cross country/track and field. He was an instructor of physical education classes, recruiting coordinator and hurdles/steeplechase coach. Hamilton men’s cross country placed eighth out of 41 teams in the 2014 NCAA Division III Atlantic Regional. Hamilton also had a female cross country runner qualify for nationals in 2014. “We are very excited to bring Ben into the Bulldog family,” said athletic director Michael Duffy. “After a national search, Ben had the championship pedigree we were looking for in a new coach. He has shown integrity and hard work in previous positions and we feel like he will motivate and inspire our studentathletes.” Before joining the Continental staff he spent seven years as an assistant coach at Wartburg College. Carlson helped the Knights to six NCAA Division III track & field team championships and a total of 16 top-five finishes at nationals. The Wartburg women’s cross country team finished in the top 16 six times, including a runner-up performance and a fourthplace showing. Carlson worked with four national champions and 51 All-Americans and coached runners who posted two of Division III’s seven fastest women’s 5-kilometer times ever. He served as assistant director for the 2010 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships. “I am very blessed for the opportunity to move into a head coaching role at Adrian College,” commented Carlson. “After learning from two great coaching mentors, I am excited to pursue excellence with the young men and women of Adrian Cross Country and Track & Field. I would like to thank Mr. Duffy and the Adrian administration for this opportunity, and look forward to fruitful years to come.” A 2006 graduate of Wartburg, Carlson earned allregion honors twice as a member of the cross country team. A team captain, he helped the Knights to three top-10 finishes at nationals. He received a bachelor’s degree in communication arts with a concentration in public relations in 2006. He earned his master’s degree in health education from the University of Northern Iowa in 2011.

A two-year letterwinner at East Carolina University, Harley finished his collegiate career as a two-time East Regional Qualifier in the men’s 400-meter hurdles. While donning Purple and Gold, Harley won the 2012 men’s 400-meter hurdles at the Conference USA Outdoor Championships. That same year, he helped the men’s 4x100-meter relay squad capture the C-USA Outdoor Championships. During his time at ECU, Harley was a participant at the NCAA Division I National Championships and earned an Honorable Mention All-America selection for his performance in the men’s 400-meter hurdles. He also guided the men’s 4x200-meter relay team to a first-place finish at the Penn Relay IC4A with a time of 1:25.10. Harley graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in sports management in December 2013 from ECU.
