COACHING STAFF Mark White Head Coach 5th Season Adrian College (1988) 517-264-3978 mwhite@adrian.edu Mark White enters his fifth season as head coach of the Adrian College men’s basketball team in 2013-14. White has led a resurgence in the men’s basketball program at Adrian College. The team has posted 63 wins in the last four seasons and went 18-8 overall and 7-7 in the MIAA (third place) in 2012-13. The 18 wins were also the most by a Bulldog men’s basketball team since the 1954-55 season (21-4). The team also went 17-9 overall and 9-5 in the MIAA a year ago finishing second. It was the best finish by an Adrian College men’s basketball team in the MIAA since the 1978-79 season. In addition, Adrian pushed Hope College to overtime in the MIAA Tournament Final in Holland, Michigan narrowly missing out on the school’s firstever trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2012. The 35 wins is a two-year record for the basketball program. In his past four seasons, White has guided the Bulldogs to a .500 or better record every year. In 201011, Adrian was 13-13 overall and 7-7 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The Bulldogs led the league in scoring defense allowing 56.9 points per game (a school record) and in rebounds with 31.6 a contest. In White’s first season in 2009-10, Adrian had a seven-win improvement and placed third in the MIAA standings. The third-place showing was the best finish in conference play for the Bulldogs since the 1987-88 season. Adrian finished 15-12 overall (9-5 MIAA) in 2009-10 with one of its biggest wins coming when it knocked off NCAA tournament participant Hope at the Merillat Center in late February. The nine wins in league play were the most since the 1978-79 season. The Bulldogs finished the season by winning seven of their final 10 games. White was hired in May 2009 as Adrian’s coach and replaced longtime coach Buck Riley. He meshed a group of 11 newcomers to help the Bulldogs put together a strong season. Adrian was the youngest team in the MIAA and exceeded preseason expectations. White is a 1988 graduate of Adrian College and was inducted into the College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002. He currently ranks fifth on the career charts in scoring with 1,454 points and is also the current holder of the all-time assists record. White comes back to Adrian College after a very successful career as a prep coach in his hometown of Detroit, Mich. He compiled a record of 201-42 during his time as head coach at Renaissance High School and Southeastern High School. He coached two Michigan Class B High School State Championship teams at Renaissance in 2004 and 2006 and advanced to the state semifinals four out of five seasons from 2002 to 2006.

NCAA DIVISION III Division III Philosophy Academics are the primary focus for Division III student-athletes. The division minimizes the conflicts between athletics and academics and keeps studentathletes on a path to graduation through shorter practice and playing seasons, the number of contests, no redshirting and regional competition that reduces time away from academic studies. Studentathletes are integrated on campus and treated like all other members of the general studentbody, keeping them focused on being a student first. Division III is engaged in division-wide discussions about implementing an Academic Success Rate in the near future. The NCAA has collected and reported graduation rates since 1991 for all students (using the six-year federal methodology) and for all studentathletes receiving athletically related financial aid.

While Division III students have been included in this process, a separate report on student-athletes in Division III has been absent because the division does not award athletics grants-in-aid. While many Division III institutions and conferences have tracked the academic success of their student-athletes, they have used a variety of criteria (for example, graduation, grade-point average, class rank). However, Division III recently completed a two-year pilot academicreporting program that produced data from a representative sample showing that student-athletes graduate at higher rates than those of their student-body peers. Division III members will decide soon whether a division-wide academic reporting structure that produces an annual Academic Success Rate is appropriate.

The Three D's Discover Division III student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their interests and passions beyond the classroom and field of play‌to discover themselves. Develop Division III institutions provide an environment that encourages student-athletes to develop into well-rounded adults. Small class sizes, the ability to participate in more than one sport, and an emphasis on participating activities outside of the classroom are all hallmarks of the Division III experience. Dedicate Division III institutions expect student-athletes to dedicate themselves to achieving their potential. Student-athletes must manage their busy schedules, keep up with class work and face the same challenges as the rest of the student-body.
