COACHING STAFF Charlie Edwards Head Coach 2nd Season Louisville (2008) 517-264-3990 cedwards@adrian.edu Charlie Edwards is the ninth head men’s soccer coach at Adrian College. He came to Adrian College after working as an assistant coach at NCAA Division I institution Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. Edwards had been with the Falcons from March 2011 until he was hired by AC. He saw the team compile a record of 2124-12 over the past three seasons including a 6-7-6 mark during the 2013 season. The Falcons fielded a very strong defensive team with the help of Edwards allowing 0.89 goals per game. The team’s highlighted match was a tie against 14th-ranked University of Michigan. The team also was given the NSCAA AllAcademic Award four years in a row for having a team grade-point average over 3.0. In addition, Brandon Silva was also named an Academic All-American. Edwards has extensive experience working as a goalkeeper coach and helped develop and implement a training program for an excellent corps that included Michael Wiest, a Major League Soccer prospect, who recorded eight shutouts in the 2013 season. The 2012 season saw the Falcons post eight wins against a tough schedule. BGSU’s 8-9-3 overall mark represented the team’s most wins and highest winning percentage since 2003. The Brown and Orange posted two wins and a tie against teams that advanced to the NCAA Championships. The 2011 season saw the Falcons post a 7-8-3 record. The seven wins included a season-opening victory over ninth-ranked Michigan before a crowd of over 2,100 at Cochrane Field. The team’s defense posted a total of seven shutouts on the year, the program’s most in a decade. Edwards arrived at BGSU from the University of Dayton. He spent the 2010 season as a volunteer assistant on the Flyers’ staff. He worked primarily with the goalkeepers for head coach Dennis Currier. Edwards helped with administrative duties and travel arrangements and also helped to plan camps and manage the recruit database. In the fall of 2010, Dayton’s keeper, Tyler Picard, was named to the All-Atlantic 10 Conference Second Team. Picard had eight complete-match shutouts and a goals-against average of just 0.79. Edwards worked at the University of Central Florida prior to heading to Dayton. While at UCF, he worked with the team’s five keepers, helping to plan and conduct goalkeeping sessions and performed various administrative duties for the program. A 2008 graduate of the University of Louisville, Edwards was a two-year starter for the Cardinals. He was a member of the 2007 team that advanced to the semifinal round of the Big East Tournament and the second round of the NCAA Championships. A native of Lilburn, Ga., he was a member of the conference’s Commissioner’s honor roll in both 2006 and 2007. Edwards earned in the spring of 2008 a bachelor’s degree in sport administration. He currently holds a USSF National “D” coaching license including a NSCAA Goalkeeping I, II and III Diploma. He also is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and the United States Soccer Federation.
Ryan McDonald Assistant Coach 2nd Season Louisville (2011) 517-265-5161 x 4026 rmcdonald@adrian. edu Ryan McDonald joins head coach Charlie Edwards as an assistant coach for the men’s soccer program at Adrian College. McDonald graduated from the University of Louisville with a bachelor’s degree in physical education in December 2011. He has been involved with the game of soccer since arriving on the Louisville campus in the fall of 2005. McDonald has worked as a camp counselor at the University of Louisville, Bellarmine University and Franklin Road Academy. He has also worked with the Mockingbird Valley Soccer Club in a variety of roles. McDonald was a recreational soccer coach year-round since 2009 until accepting this position at Adrian College. He also was a club/select coach in the fall of 2011 and managed the overall youth program. McDonald served as head soccer coach at Waggener High School in the fall of 2013. In addition, he worked at Superkick/Teamzone in Columbus, Ohio as a facility operator and soccer trainer. “I am very excited to bring Ryan on staff here at Adrian College,” said Edwards. “Having known Ryan for many years, I knew he would be a great fit for the program. He has extensive knowledge of the game through his experiences at Louisville, and as a professional player for a number of years. Ryan has always had a positive attitude and an eagerness to learn. I have no doubt he will have an immediate impact on our program.” McDonald played four years for his alma mater and led the team in goals during his senior year. He ranked second on the team in scoring with 14 points (6 goals, 2 assists) and the Cardinals were 11-8-2 in 2008. He was elected team Most Valuable Player as a senior and after his collegiate career played in the Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL) for the Louisville Lightning from 2009-13. McDonald was elected team captain during the 2011-12 season and had eight goals and seven assists in 16 games.

NCAA DIVISION III Division III Philosophy Academics are the primary focus for Division III student-athletes. The division minimizes the conflicts between athletics and academics and keeps studentathletes on a path to graduation through shorter practice and playing seasons, the number of contests, no redshirting and regional competition that reduces time away from academic studies. Studentathletes are integrated on campus and treated like all other members of the general studentbody, keeping them focused on being a student first. Division III is engaged in division-wide discussions about implementing an Academic Success Rate in the near future. The NCAA has collected and reported graduation rates since 1991 for all students (using the six-year federal methodology) and for all studentathletes receiving athletically related financial aid.
While Division III students have been included in this process, a separate report on student-athletes in Division III has been absent because the division does not award athletics grants-in-aid. While many Division III institutions and conferences have tracked the academic success of their student-athletes, they have used a variety of criteria (for example, graduation, grade-point average, class rank). However, Division III recently completed a two-year pilot academicreporting program that produced data from a representative sample showing that student-athletes graduate at higher rates than those of their student-body peers. Division III members will decide soon whether a division-wide academic reporting structure that produces an annual Academic Success Rate is appropriate.
The Three D's Discover Division III student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their interests and passions beyond the classroom and field of play‌to discover themselves. Develop Division III institutions provide an environment that encourages student-athletes to develop into well-rounded adults. Small class sizes, the ability to participate in more than one sport, and an emphasis on participating activities outside of the classroom are all hallmarks of the Division III experience. Dedicate Division III institutions expect student-athletes to dedicate themselves to achieving their potential. Student-athletes must manage their busy schedules, keep up with class work and face the same challenges as the rest of the student-body.
