Pavilion which is used for a variety of events including alumni gatherings on game-days. In the 1950s, the campus had a stadium that was located next to Caine Student Center (then called Ridge Gymnasium). It was later razed to make way for new academic buildings. The College entered a cooperative arrangement in the 1960’s to use the new high school stadium, which the College helped build. The Bulldogs played their home games at Maple Stadium for over four decades before the 2006 season. “The Mape” was the site for several classic battles over the years. The funds for the project were raised through the Adrian College Development Office. Architectural services were provided by Hastings & Chivetta, an industry leader in higher education facilities. The firm designed the Merillat Sport & Fitness Center on campus. Construction management was provided by the Douglas Company.

COACHING STAFF Charlie Edwards Head Coach 1st Season Louisville (2008) 517-264-3990 cedwards@adrian.edu Charlie Edwards has been hired as the ninth head men’s soccer coach at Adrian College. Edwards comes to Adrian College after working as an assistant coach at NCAA Division I institution Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. Edwards had been with the Falcons since March 2011. He saw the team compile a record of 21-24-12 over the past three seasons including a 6-7-6 mark during the 2013 season. The Falcons fielded a very strong defensive team with the help of Edwards allowing 0.89 goals per game. The team’s highlighted match was a tie against 14th-ranked University of Michigan. The team also was given for the fourth straight year a NSCAA All-Academic Award for having a team grade-point average over 3.0. In addition, Brandon Silva was also named an Academic All-American. Edwards has extensive experience working as a goalkeeper coach and helped develop and implement a training program for an excellent corps that included Michael Wiest, a Major League Soccer prospect, who recorded eight shutouts in the 2013 season. The 2012 season saw the Falcons post eight wins against a tough schedule. BGSU’s 8-9-3 overall mark represented the team’s most wins and highest winning percentage since 2003. The Brown and Orange posted two wins and a tie against teams that advanced to the NCAA Championships. The 2011 season saw the Falcons post a 7-8-3 record. The seven wins included a season-opening victory over ninth-ranked Michigan before a crowd of over 2,100 at Cochrane Field. The team’s defense posted a total of seven shutouts on the year, the program’s most in a decade. Edwards arrived at BGSU from the University of Dayton. He spent the 2010 season as a volunteer assistant on the Flyers’ staff. He worked primarily with the goalkeepers for head coach Dennis Currier. Edwards helped with administrative duties and travel arrangements and also helped to plan camps and manage the recruit database. In the fall of 2010, Dayton’s keeper, Tyler Picard, was named to the All-Atlantic 10 Conference Second Team. Picard had eight complete-match shutouts and a goals-against average of just 0.79. Edwards worked at the University of Central Florida prior to heading to Dayton. While at UCF, he worked with the team’s five keepers, helping to plan

and conduct goalkeeping sessions and performed various administrative duties for the program. A 2008 graduate of the University of Louisville, Edwards was a two-year starter for the Cardinals. A native of Lilburn, Ga., he was a member of the conference’s Commissioner’s honor roll in both 2006 and 2007. Edwards earned in the spring of 2008 a bachelor’s degree in sport administration. He currently holds a USSF National “D” coaching license including a NSCAA Goalkeeping I, II and III Diploma. He also is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and the United States Soccer Federation.

Q & A with Coach Edwards
Q: What are your goals for this season? A: When we got together last spring as a team, we had a number of meetings on what direction we wanted to take, how to set goals, and what was realistic for our team. I simply felt that if our team established the goals, it would hold them more accountable. They did a fantastic job of setting the sights for this program. There are two that specifically stand out to me. First and foremost, we want to get a team GPA of above a 3.0. We understand that we can control the outcome by doing the necessary work in the classroom and in study tables. The other goal is to win the MIAA. When we talked about this as a group, we came to the conclusion that this should be our expectation every year. We know that it won’t be easy, but we have a good group of guys that are willing to learn and work on the field to achieve this goal. Q: What are your team’s strengths? A: When I look at our team, I think that one of our main strengths is that we are a collective unit. We all understand where we want to go, what our goals are, and the sacrifices that we must make in order to get there. Another strength is the level of belief we have in ourselves. That belief comes in our preparation, trusting each other, and understanding that we are a collective group. The guys have done a great job of growing, learning, and most importantly, believing in our team. Q: What is the outlook of this year’s MIAA competition? A: The MIAA is a strong conference, and that has not changed this year. The conference is actually getting stronger. We know that every game will be a challenge, and that we must treat every game the same way no matter who we are playing. We are fortunate enough to play every team twice in the MIAA. This will only benefit us because we will get to adjust tactics after we see each team play. Q: What will be your biggest challenges this season? A: The biggest challenge for us will be to not stray from our goals. We cannot at any point lose sight on our goals. Sometimes you can get lost in the season because it can be long and arduous. We are trying to fit 20 games into a two month window, and that can be taxing both mentally and physically. The challenge will simply be to trust that we are preparing correctly for every game, and in turn, that will help us achieve our goals. Q: What aspect of your team can surprise in MIAA competition? A: I think one major advantage that we have tactically is that we will be trying something different. We have worked tirelessly over preseason on making sure we are organized and extremely disciplined in our style of play. That can be a very powerful tool for us. We also know that adjustments will need to be made since we see each team twice. We are confident that we can make adjustments throughout the season in order to better prepare ourselves for each game. We are very excited to get started.

NCAA DIVISION III Division III Philosophy Academics are the primary focus for Division III student-athletes. The division minimizes the conflicts between athletics and academics and keeps studentathletes on a path to graduation through shorter practice and playing seasons, the number of contests, no redshirting and regional competition that reduces time away from academic studies. Studentathletes are integrated on campus and treated like all other members of the general student-body, keeping them focused on being a student first. Division III is engaged in division-wide discussions about implementing an Academic Success Rate in the near future. The NCAA has collected and reported graduation rates since 1991 for all students (using the six-year federal methodology) and for all student-athletes receiving athletically related financial aid.
While Division III students have been included in this process, a separate report on student-athletes in Division III has been absent because the division does not award athletics grants-in-aid. While many Division III institutions and conferences have tracked the academic success of their student-athletes, they have used a variety of criteria (for example, graduation, grade-point average, class rank). However, Division III recently completed a two-year pilot academic-reporting program that produced data from a representative sample showing that student-athletes graduate at higher rates than those of their student-body peers. Division III members will decide soon whether a division-wide academic reporting structure that produces an annual Academic Success Rate is appropriate.
The Three D's Discover Division III student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their interests and passions beyond the classroom and field of play‌to discover themselves. Develop Division III institutions provide an environment that encourages student-athletes to develop into well-rounded adults. Small class sizes, the ability to participate in more than one sport, and an emphasis on participating activities outside of the classroom are all hallmarks of the Division III experience. Dedicate Division III institutions expect student-athletes to dedicate themselves to achieving their potential. Student-athletes must manage their busy schedules, keep up with class work and face the same challenges as the rest of the student-body.
