SEASON OUTLOOK

The 2010 edition of the Adrian College Men’s Soccer program, comprised of what could be one of the youngest rosters in the country, will look to flip their 7-10-3 record of ’09 into a winning one. The team’s roster under second year head coach Chris LeFevre graduated only two players that started multiple games and returns only three upperclassmen, compared to 21 underclassmen. The upperclassmen are led by senior goalkeeper and captain Alex Pavlika (Temperance, Mich.). Pavlika, a team Co-MVP, started all 20 games last season which included six shutouts and led the MIAA in total saves and saves per game. “He is a guy that leads by having outstanding personal habits,” coach LeFevre said. “He’s a 3.0 student and does a very good job of balancing academics and athletics. He’s one of the top goalkeepers in the conference and it’s because of his lifestyle. Hopefully our young players look at him and see that’s where hard work and discipline can get you.” The underclassmen are led by the other Co-MVP from last year, sophomore Cazz Warren (Toronto, Ont.). Warren will look to capitalize on an outstanding freshman season where he was named All-MIAA Second Team. Warren ended his freshman campaign tied for the conference lead with eight goals scored, three of which were game winners. “Cazz was fantastic for us last year,” Cazz Warren LeFevre said. “He really opens the game up for his teammates with his awareness, speed and work ethic. He is driven to exceed expectations, not meet them. We expect Cazz to be a leader this year and continue the growth of the Adrian Men’s Soccer Program.” Also returning after a fantastic first year is Jamie Brower (Maumee, Ohio). Brower started and played every minute of the season last year as a freshman at the center back position. Brower scored two goals while adding an assist. Brower stepped up to the challenge as a young player coming into a new team and leading from day one. “He is definitely someone that this team needs and is building around,” LeFevre said. “He grew as the year went on and we were pleased with what we saw out of him at the end of the year. With a year of experience under him, we expect him to be recognized as one of the better center backs in the MIAA this year.” The two other upperclassmen, senior Ben Enser (Dunkirk, N.Y.) and junior Brian Bush (Ypsilanti, Mich.) played pivotal roles during the 2009 season Enser, the Coaches Award winner, scored two big goals for

the black and gold. Both goals by Enser were scored within 20 seconds of coming on as a substitute. The first against Hope College in their 1-1 tie and the other was a gamewinner against Trine University. Bush, awarded the Most Improved Player, played left back for the first time in his career playing in all 20 games, while starting in 17. Sophomore Aaron Armstrong (Waterville, Ohio) will look to continue his success from his first season with the Bulldogs. Armstrong was second on the team in points with eight, while leading the team with four assists. The team will also welcome in 13 freshmen to the squad this season. Coach LeFevre believes Aaron Armstrong this was a big year for the Bulldogs in recruiting. He expects this year’s class to help solidify the foundation for the program to build on. Marcus DerrickHuie (Mississauga, Ont.), Jerelle Gosling (Mississauga, Ont.), Ryan McCarthy (Brook Park, Ohio) and Quinton Wallace (Fort Wayne, Ind.) are just a few of the newcomers that could make an impact this season for the black and gold. “We are expecting our entire freshmen class to come in and make a huge impact right away,” LeFevre said. “The biggest thing for them will be their fitness levels. That is one thing the freshmen class did well last season. The most important thing for our team is for every player to be consistent. If they can do that during the position battles in the pre-season, they will earn a spot on the field.” The Bulldogs will face a tough schedule this season with matches against three schools that are ranked in the top 15 pre-season national poll, including the season opener against Rochester (#6). The team then travels to the Adidas Invitational to take on Ohio Wesleyan (#13) and Capital, who received votes in this year’s poll. The squad will round out their first seven games with back-toback matches against Elmhurst who received top 25 votes last season and MIAA champion Calvin (#2) who finished runner-up in the DIII tournament. “Those games early in the season are preparing us for the best tea teams ms in the MIAA,” LeFevre explained. “We have the expectation of being a top 25 team and this is showing the guys that this is what we need to do to be a top 25 team. We could have made an easier schedule, but the point of a tougher schedule is the experience of playing those types of teams. If we can be a competitive team in those first six games, we will have prepared ourselves to be a very tough team to beat in the MIAA.”

Head Coach Chris LeFevre 2nd Season - clefevre@adrian.edu Adelphi (2004) 517-264-3990 Chris LeFevre enters his second season as the leader of the Men’s Soccer program. LeFevre has five years of experience at the collegiate level with his most recent stop coming at Division I Binghamton University in New York. The Bearcats posted a 12-6-3 record in his one year with the team and advanced to the America East Conference Finals before losing 1-0 to Boston University. One of his main duties included recruitment for which the team was scheduled to bring in 14 new student-athletes for the 2009 season. LeFevre spent three seasons at Genesee (N.Y.) Community College, where he went 41-16-1 as

the head coach from 2005-07. He led his squad to two Western New York Athletic Conference titles in 2006 and 2007 and reached the NJCAA Regional Semifinals. Prior to his time at Genesee, LeFevre was a graduate assistant coach at Division I Canisius College during the 2004 season. After earning his bachelor’s degree in sports management from Division I Adelphi University in 2004, LeFevre earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Canisius in 2006. Also in 2006, he earned his NSCAA National Diploma. One year later, he received the NSCAA Advanced National Diploma. LeFevre played collegiately at Adelphi and later transferred to Division II East Stroudsburg University.

Assistant Coach Kirk Brazeau 2nd Season - kbrazeau@adrian.edu University of Toledo (2008) 517-265-5161 Ext. 5161 Kirk Brazeau begins his second season as assistant men’s soccer coach at Adrian College. Brazeau has served as the boys soccer head coach at Temperance Bedford High School for the past two years. During this time, he was named MHSAA District Coach of the Year in 2008. He also has coaching experince at the club level. He has coached for six years at the Toledo Celtics Soccer Club. He has instructed boys aged 8-18 with

primary focus being the under-15 through under-18 teams leading them to numerous regional and tournament titles. His playing career spans 25 years including time with the Toledo Celtics where his teams finished fifth at the 1996 Dana Cup in Denmark and ninth at the 1996 Gothia Cup in Sweden. On the collegiate level, Brazeau played at Ohio Wesleyan before continuing his education at the University of Toledo. He has a bachelor’s degree from UT in Interdisciplinary Studies and is currently working towards a master’s degree.

ADRIAN COLLEGE Adrian College evolved from a theological institute founded by the Wesleyan Methodist denomination at Leoni, Michigan, a small town east of Jackson, in 1845. In 1855 this institute united with the Leoni Seminary, a Methodist Protestant institution, to establish Michigan Union College.

Legend states that members of the College became concerned about the environment at Leoni, which was nicknamed “Whiskey Town.” In 1859, this concern and other circumstances made it advisable to relocate or close. In the same year, Dr. Asa Mahan, pastor of the Plymouth Congregational Church in Adrian and a well-known educator, was encouraged by citizens of the community to establish a college. Mahan had served as the first president of Oberlin College and, before that, as an officer of Lane Theological Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Mahan and his colleagues invited the officials and supporters of the closing Michigan Union College to join in establishing the new college at Adrian. After the invitation was accepted, the story says, the library holdings were loaded on an ox-cart in March 1859, and transported 60 miles to the new campus site on the west side of Adrian. On March 28, 1859, Adrian College was chartered by the Michigan legislature as a degreegranting institution with Dr. Mahan as its first president. Through a series of consolidations and denomination unifications, the College has maintained its relationship with The United Methodist Church. For almost 100 years, the campus consisted of several brick buildings stretching along Madison Street. Most of today’s campus was woods and fields. In the mid-1950s, the College, encouraged by the generosity of Ray W. Herrick, embarked in a building program that established the basis for the current campus. Today, when students walk in the area bounded on the east by Madison Street and edged by Downs Hall, Valade Hall, Cornelius House and Herrick Tower, they tread on the same ground that students hurried across in 1859 as they rushed to classes, meals and social events. Now, however, the campus consists of 100 acres, over 20 academic and service buildings and 10 residence halls, plus apartments and themed housing.

ADRIAN COLLEGE NAMED MILITARY FRIENDLY SCHOOL Adrian College is pleased to announce that it is included in today’s release of G.I. Jobs 2011 list of Military Friendly Schools. The list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools which are doing the most to embrace America’s veterans as students. “Adrian College is honored to be selected as a Military Friendly School,” said Dr. Jeffrey Docking, president of Adrian College. “While our efforts to assist veterans are small compared to their efforts to defend our country, we appreciate being recognized as a college that believes in patriotism and service to our country.” Schools on the list range from state universities and private colleges to community colleges and trade schools. The common bond is their shared priority of recruiting students with military experience.

Before coming to Adrian, he held positions at Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, Penn., most recently as vice president and special assistant to the president, and as vice president of student affairs and dean of student affairs. He also has experience teaching and working in residence life. He and his wife Elizabeth have four children.
