COACHING STAFF Anna Ball

Head Coach 1st Season Notre Dame College (2009) 517-264-3998 aball@adrian.edu The Adrian College athletic department is pleased to announce the hiring of Anna Ball as the ninth head softball coach in the history of the school. Ball takes over a very successful program after Kristina Schweikert stepped down after 178 wins in seven seasons. “It was important to find someone with collegiate head coaching experience to continue our highly regarded softball program,” said athletic director Michael Duffy. “Anna had been at her previous institution since 2011 and knows what it takes in terms of recruiting and managing a program. Adrian College is very lucky to have someone of Anna’s caliber step into a great situation of talent and make it even better.” Ball comes to Adrian College from Southern Wesleyan University in Central, South Carolina where she was the head coach since the 2011 season. In 2014, she guided the softball squad to the best offensive season in school history and coached the conference freshman of the year as well as Lizzie Fela who led the SSAC conference in batting and was a NFCA and NAIA All-American. Fela became the first Warrior softball player in 10 years to be named an AllAmerican. Ball led the Warriors to the program’s first 20-win season in nine years during the 2013 season. Under Ball’s leadership the Warriors racked up wins over four nationally-ranked NAIA teams and finished runnerup in the NCCAA South Regional in 2013. While at SWU, Ball also served as the Student Athlete Advisory Committee advisor and was an adjunct professor. Ball began her collegiate coaching career at her alma mater, Notre Dame College (Ohio), from 2009-2011. She was the assistant softball coach for the Falcons who made NAIA National Tournament appearances in every year she was on the staff. The Falcons finished sixth during the 2009 NAIA National Tournament. As a Falcon athlete, Ball was a two-time AllAmerican and a three-time American Mideast Conference Player of the Year. As a first-year Falcon, she received the AMC’s Freshman of the Year award. She holds nine different NDC offensive records and at the summation of her career, became the NAIA’s alltime leader in career batting average (.516), slugging percentage (.892) and ranks second in the NAIA with 87 doubles. The Mansfield, Ohio native has a bachelor of arts degree in Middle Childhood Education and is currently working on her master’s degree at Notre Dame College in Educational Technology.

Jackie Barley

Assistant Coach 1st Season Madonna (2014) 517-265-5161 x. 3998 jbarley@adrian.edu

Jackie Barley joins head coach Anna Ball as an assistant coach for the Adrian College softball program. Barley is a local product who played her high school softball at nearby Tecumseh and she has also helped on coaching staff’s for several area high schools. Barley concluded her prep career in 2008 for Tecumseh and had a fabulous resume while at shortstop for the Indians. Her teams went 142-25 and were back-to-back Division 2 State Champions in 2007 and 2008. She was named First Team AllConference, All-District and All-Region while also receiving All-State recognition twice in 2007 and 2008. She was the Adrian Daily Telegram County Player of the Year three times and currently holds over 10 hitting records at Tecumseh. Barley had the opportunity to represent the United States as a World Cup of Softball member in 2008 on an international stage in Amsterdam, Netherlands. She signed to play softball at the University of Michigan but a shoulder injury prevented her from making an impact. Barley transferred to Madonna University to conclude her collegiate career and helped the Crusaders capture the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference title in 2012. The team made a NAIA National Tournament appearance and Barley has named First Team All-WHAC and All-Region in 2011 and 2012. She also was awarded the conference Player of the Year in 2012. Barley graduated from Madonna University with a bachelor’s degree in sociology in 2014. Barley has also worked as an assistant coach at Addison High School as well as Onsted High School in Lenawee County. In 2010, she helped guide Onsted to its first conference (LCAA) championship in over 10 years.

Steve Barkway Volunteer Coach 3rd Season

Steve Barkway enters his second season in the Bulldog softball program as a volunteer assistant coach. Barkway has over fifteen years of experience coaching various levels of softball from Little League on up. Ten of those years as an assistant coach with the highly successful Tecumseh High School program. Most recently, he helped guide the Tecumseh Junior Varsity team to their school record 31-0 season in 2011. That team went on to win the state high school Division II title this past spring. Barkway has always been involved with some outstanding softball teams. During his last four years at Tecumseh, the junior varsity team lost just five games. In his ten-year tenure, Tecumseh had a winning percentage of over 75 percent. He was head coach and assistant coach for several seasons with the Tecumseh travel ball team, Michigan Thunder, winning a state championship in 2002.

NCAA DIVISION III Division III Philosophy Academics are the primary focus for Division III student-athletes. The division minimizes the conflicts between athletics and academics and keeps studentathletes on a path to graduation through shorter practice and playing seasons, the number of contests, no redshirting and regional competition that reduces time away from academic studies. Studentathletes are integrated on campus and treated like all other members of the general student-body, keeping them focused on being a student first. Division III is engaged in division-wide discussions about implementing an Academic Success Rate in the near future. The NCAA has collected and reported graduation rates since 1991 for all students (using the six-year federal methodology) and for all student-athletes receiving athletically related financial aid.

While Division III students have been included in this process, a separate report on student-athletes in Division III has been absent because the division does not award athletics grants-in-aid. While many Division III institutions and conferences have tracked the academic success of their student-athletes, they have used a variety of criteria (for example, graduation, grade-point average, class rank). However, Division III recently completed a two-year pilot academic-reporting program that produced data from a representative sample showing that student-athletes graduate at higher rates than those of their student-body peers. Division III members will decide soon whether a division-wide academic reporting structure that produces an annual Academic Success Rate is appropriate.

The Three D's Discover Division III student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their interests and passions beyond the classroom and field of play‌to discover themselves. Develop Division III institutions provide an environment that encourages student-athletes to develop into well-rounded adults. Small class sizes, the ability to participate in more than one sport, and an emphasis on participating activities outside of the classroom are all hallmarks of the Division III experience. Dedicate Division III institutions expect student-athletes to dedicate themselves to achieving their potential. Student-athletes must manage their busy schedules, keep up with class work and face the same challenges as the rest of the student-body.
