Assistant Coach Cassandra Milosh 2nd Season cmilosh@adrian.edu 517-265-5161 x. 4558 Elon University (2008)
Ashley Carlson is currently in her fourth season as head coach at Adrian College for synchronized skating and is leading the intercollegiate figure skating team into its third season.
Cassandra (Cass) Milosh will be entering her second season with the synchronized skating and intercollegiate figure skating teams at Adrian College.
In 2013-2014, the Bulldogs offered Senior and Open Collegiate synchronized skating for the very first time. The senior team made their debut on the national scene, earning the silver medal at the 2014 Midwestern Championships and placing 9th at the 2014 US Synchronized Skating Championships. The Open Collegiate team ranked 10th in the Midwest.
During the 2013-2014 season, Milosh assisted the inaugural Senior team and the Open Collegiate team. The Senior team went on to a second place finish at the 2014 Midwestern Championships and a ninth place finish at the 2014 US Synchronized Skating Championships. The Open Collegiate team finished tenth at the 2014 Midwestern Championships.
Carlson also led the squad in a successful season of intercollegiate figure skating, winning all 3 Midwestern competitions and defending their Midwestern Conference overall title. The team qualified for nationals, hosted at home, and placed 4th - moving up a spot from the previous season. The figure skating team is now ranked 4th out of 57 collegiate programs. Prior to coaching, Carlson skated for the Crystallettes Adult team, in her time winning the 2009 U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships and 4 other national medals. Carlson spent her collegiate career skating for the club team at Miami University where she served as Team Captain in 2008. Carlson was also a three-time national intercollegiate freestyle/solo dance competitor for Miami. Carlson holds a Certified Rating in Synchronized Skating with the Professional Skaters Association and is a Level IV Ranked Coach. As a skater, she has earned a USFSA Gold medal in Moves in the Field, a Pre-Gold medal in Dance, and passed Intermediate Freestyle. Most notably, Milosh helped Team USA win the 2002 Neuchatel Trophy in the junior division. As an adult competitor, she competed for both the Colonials and Esprit de Corps, out of Lexington, Massachusetts. Milosh is a twotime adult national champion (2010, 2011) with Esprit de Corps. Milosh also worked as a Program Administrator, Curriculum Coordinator, and Summer Camp Director for the YMCA of Greater Boston. 2014 FIGURE SKATING NATIONALS Adrian College’s intercollegiate skating team earned 73 points for a fourth-place finish at the 2014 U.S. Intercollegiate Championships on Sunday, April 13th at Arrington Ice Arena. The championships featured the top nine collegiate figure skating teams in the country. The three institutions with the most points throughout the season in each conference (Midwestern, Eastern, and Pacific Coast) were invited to compete at the event. With the fourth-place finish, Adrian College is now ranked fourth out of forty-four colleges in the United States. Adrian College entered the U.S. Championships as the back-to-back Midwestern Conference Champions, after an undefeated regular season. The Bulldogs ran away with first place at the Bronco Challenge Cup (hosted by Western Michigan), Maize and Blue Matchup (hosted by Michigan), and Skate on Wisconsin (hosted by Wisconsin-Madison). The squad has now won five consecutive Midwestern Conference competitions. When asked about the team’s success, head coach Ashley Carlson described, “It was another perfect season. We skated better and better at every competition this year, busting our overall team high score and dominating each Midwestern event. We are beyond proud to be fourth in the nation, but now we want more. We want to win the whole thing.” The highlight of the championship was a first-place finish in the following events: Preliminary Freeskate Group A (Maddie Sena), Preliminary Freeskate Group B (Casey Josz), Senior Short Program Group A (Tricia DeFelice), and Senior Freeskate Group A (Tricia DeFelice). The Bulldogs also had top three finishes in Pre-Juvenile Freeskate (Barbara Hipp), Juvenile Freeskate (Raynise Mancha), Novice Short Program Group A (Meghan Barnes), Junior Short Program Group B (Miranda Micallef), Junior Freeskate (India Johnson), Senior Dance (Maddie Sena), Gold Dance Group A (Tricia DeFelice), Gold Dance Group B (India Johnson), International Dance (Tricia DeFelice), Intermediate Team Maneuver, and High Team Maneuver. “This level of success is exactly what drove me to want to coach at Adrian,” assistant coach Cassandra Milosh explained. “I am very proud of what our athletes were able to achieve all season. It isn’t just about the medals and points for us -- our coaching staff also celebrates teamwork, discipline in training, and individual improvement.” At the conclusion of the event, all skaters, teams, and coaches were invited onto the ice for a group picture and awards ceremony. The camaraderie among competitors and teams is a unique aspect of intercollegiate team skating. School pride is also an important part of the culture, with fight songs, banners, and team colors displayed by all participants and fans. “Competing on home ice was a new experience for our team,” freshman Maddie Sena recounted. “We definitely had the home crowd support and that motivated us to perform our best.” University of Delaware are now repeat champions with 132 points, followed by Boston University (115.5), Dartmouth College (114.5), Adrian (73), UCLA (45), Cal-Berkeley (38), Denver (29.5), Michigan (25.5), and Miami, Ohio (24). Adrian, Delaware, and Denver were the Conference Champions of the Midwestern, Eastern, and Pacific Coast, respectively.

UPDATE FROM COACH CARLSON Dear Bulldog Skating Friends, Family and Prospective Skaters: Welcome to the 2014-2015 season of Bulldog Skating! As I enter my fourth season as Head Coach, I am able to reflect on our organization’s extraordinary growth and success. After three years of rebranding and development, Adrian College Skating has become a premiere choice for elite student-athletes to continue their pursuit of competitive excellence on the ice. We are in the midst of a new year full of exciting and unique opportunities, and we invite you to join us along the way. I attribute much of the team’s success to our unique vision of collegiate skating. We are the only school in the country to offer both Varsity synchronized skating and figure skating, and we allow and encourage our team members to participate in both. Of our thirty-three current team members, twenty-five compete in both synchro and figure skating. This format has motivated student-athletes from all over the country - from Massachusetts, New Jersey, Virginia, Wisconsin, Texas, California, and everywhere inbetween – to become Bulldogs. With this year’s large incoming class of 17 talented freshmen, the sky is the limit for Bulldog Skating. The synchro team now offers two team options at the Senior and Collegiate level, and looks to improve upon its national ranking with the hopes of representing the college internationally as members of Team USA. The figure skating team is Back-to-Back Midwestern Conference Champions, is ranked 4th in the US, and trains with desire to win a third straight conference title and the ultimate goal of becoming national champions. For fans interested in seeing us perform in a unique atmosphere, we encourage you to come see us skate at “Bulldogs at the Ballpark” on New Year’s Eve (December 31, 2014) at Fifth Third Field in Toledo, Ohio. Our NCAA Varsity Men’s Hockey team will take on the US National U-18 team on the outdoor rink during Winterfest. For tickets, visit: http://www.toledowalleye.com//winterfest/winterfest-2014 Mark your calendars: Bulldog Skating Annual Ice Show – February 7, 2015 Recruitment Weekend and Try-outs – March 20-22, 2015 Bulldog Skating Camp – July 17-19, 2015 Interested in becoming a Bulldog? Contact me today at acarlson@adrian.edu for more information on how to begin the recruitment process. On behalf of our skaters, their families, our coaching staff, and myself, I thank you for your limitless enthusiasm and support! Let’s hear it for the Black and Gold! Go Bulldogs! UNITED STATES FIGURE SKATING U.S. Figure Skating is the national governing body for the sport of figure skating in the United States. U.S. Figure Skating is a member of the International Skating Union (ISU), the international federation for figure skating, and is a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC). U.S. Figure Skating is one of the strongest and fastest growing governing bodies within the Olympic movement with more than 180,000 members. It is comprised of member clubs, collegiate clubs, school-affiliated clubs and individual members. The charter member clubs numbered seven in 1921 when the association was formed and first became a member of the ISU. U.S. Figure Skating's national headquarters, located in Colorado Springs, Colo., is also home to the World Figure Skating Museum and Hall of Fame, which is toured by more than 7,000 visitors annually. More than 1,000 volunteers serve on U.S. Figure Skating's Board of Directors and numerous committees. Thousands of additional volunteers dedicate their time to club activities, judging, officiating and competition management. U.S. Figure Skating membership has steadily increased throughout the past 15 years: Total membership (U.S. Figure Skating Basic Skills and regular membership combined) for 1988-89 surpassed 64,000 members. 1991-92 marked the first year membership hit the 100,000 total with 102,647 1992-93 exceeded 110,000 1993-94 saw an increase of 15,000 to surpass 125,000 2005-06 saw U.S. Figure Skating set a membership record with more than 196,000 More than 680 clubs and 1,000 U.S. Figure Skating Basic Skills programs with representation from border to border are registered with U.S. Figure Skating. U.S. Figure Skating Headquarters will process an average of 5,300 figure skating skills tests every month throughout the season. More than 1,300 events, which include performances, exhibitions and competitions, are sanctioned by U.S. Figure Skating each year. The nine regional competitions, followed by three sectional competitions, begin the pipeline of U.S. Figure Skating’s qualifying competitions, which lead top athletes to U.S., World and Olympic levels. In the past eight years, approximately 20,000 figure skaters have competed at the regional level. In addition to the many club, regional and sectional competitions, U.S. Figure Skating conducts the U.S. Figure Skating Championships and Skate America. Skate America is one of the six prestigious events included in the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series. The U.S. Championships are the premier event conducted each year by U.S. Figure Skating. The competition features more than 250 skaters vying for national titles in three divisions (senior, junior and novice). The U.S. Championships are typically held for 10 days in January. Bidding to become a host city of the U.S. Championships takes place three years in advance of the event, and bidding for other U.S. Figure Skating qualifying competitions takes place two years in advance. Clubs vying for any event must meet event requirements and venue specifications to be eligible.
