2011 VOLLEYBALL YEARBOOK
GE VOLLEYBALL 2011 OUTLOOK The time is now for the 2011 Adrian College women’s volleyball team. Guided by third-year head coach Elisa Joris, the rejuvenated squad looks to make its presence felt in the middle tier of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Bringing back seven starters and letterwinners, the Lady Bulldogs have experience and team chemistry in their favor; two very important ingredients to make a splash in conference play. “We should be in the upper-half of the conference”, said Joris. “I still think Calvin and Hope will be holding those top two records and Alma is right behind them. We’ll be competing with Kalamazoo, Trine, and Olivet for that fourth spot. It just depends on who comes out strongest this season.” Since taking over the program in 2009, Joris has increased her win total every year. “I contribute it to that I’m getting my own recruits in here that play for my philosophy and also that we have a really young team,” Joris stated. “In my first year we had four freshmen on the court. Last year we had three freshmen starting. They’re getting chemistry together and building as a team, so definitely this year we’ll be increasing our win total again.” A major part in that chemistry is two-year captain senior Roxanne Duran. Duran is the anchor of the defense, leading the team with 310 digs a year ago. She also earned a team-best 36 aces, averaging 0.38 a contest which ranked second in the conference. Classmate setter Joanna Slisinger completes the senior duo and looks to make an impact while building off last year. “Jo got to learn the offense as a junior, so she’ll hopefully be able to run it more efficiently her senior year,” said Joris. Also bringing in experience as returners are junior middle blocker Stephanie Holloman, junior setter Kristy DeClercq and sophomore right side Danielle Bogedin who have
five years combined of starting action. Holloman has provided a solid foundation at the middle blocker spot ever since coming aboard as a freshman recording at least 100 kills every year. Last year, Holloman was second on the team with 156 kills. She also led the squad with 74 total blocks (22 solo and 52 assisted). Having a breakout sophomore campaign was Kristy DeClercq. She led the offense with a career-high 390 assists, while recording 20 or more assists in five different matches. The Lady Bulldogs will miss the services of All-MIAA Rebecca Tincknell who led the team with 280 kills. A player like Tincknell cannot be replaced, but Bogedin has the skills to present a threat to opposing teams at the right side position. She posted 103 kills a year ago. “Danielle complimented Rebecca last year on the court,” Joris said. “Rebecca will obviously be missed, but this year we’re hoping to spread the offense a little bit more and have a couple more kids taking swings.” Adding depth and experience are sophomores Leah Carswell, Elise Mindick, and Kristi Walker. Walker was third on the team with 255 digs as a freshman. Adrian’s recruiting efforts in the offseason concentrated on adding height to the lineup. “I’m really excited that we have some kids that are energetic and that they’ll put up some big blocks and really spark the offense,” said Joris. The Adrian community and student body involvement can be an imperative part in the team’s success this season. “We’ve had games before when we have had a couple hundred people come in on their feet cheering and the girls feed into that and play at a higher level,” mentioned Joris. “At the same time, when the stands are quiet, the girls kind of play a quieter volleyball.”

3rd Season - ejoris@adrian.edu Wayne State University (2008) 517-264-3842
Elisa Joris enters her third year as the head coach of the women’s volleyball program at Adrian College. In her two years at the helm, Joris has compiled an overall record of 16-41 and a 6-26 record in league play, while increasing her win total every year. In her young career, Joris has coached one All-MIAA player (Rebecca Tinknell ‘10, Second Team). Prior to accepting the head coaching position, Joris served as assistant coach during the 2008 season. Joris concluded her collegiate career in 2005 at Wayne State University in Detroit. She totaled 393 kills during her senior campaign and became just the second All-American in school history as she was selected to the Daktronics All-America Second Team. She also was named to the Daktronics and AVCA All-Region First Team and earned First Team All-GLIAC plaudits. Joris led the nation (Division II) in blocks per game as a senior and was fourth in the conference in kills per game. For her career, Joris played in 110 matches with 1,003 kills, 108 service aces, 105 solo blocks, 374 assisted blocks and 424 digs. She played her first two years at Grand Valley State University in Allendale before transferring to Wayne State for her final two campaigns. In her final two years as a Warrior, she had over 300 kills in both seasons and also recorded over 100 blocks. Joris is a 2008 graduate of Wayne State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations. She was named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.
Joining the Adrian volleyball staff is first-year assistant coach Maggie Dusbiber. Dusbiber has a wealth of experience as an athlete and as a coach. After playing varsity for Defiance College for a season in 2007, Dusbiber transferred to Albion where she finished her last three years of school and volleyball. In her senior campaign, Albion finished fourth in the conference, while making it to the semifinal round of the MIAA tournament. As a player, Dusbiber has experience as a libero and a setter/rightside hitter. As a coach, Dusbiber guided a 14 and under team for Huron Valley Volleyball Club from January 2011June 2011. Dusbiber graduated from Albion in 2010 with an economics and management degree with emphasis in human resources. “I’m fairly new to the coaching world but can’t wait to learn from Coach Joris and really get this season underway,” said Dusbiber. “We have a talented group of girls and I think we’ll have a very successful season with them.”

ADRIAN COLLEGE Adrian College evolved from a theological institute founded by the Wesleyan Methodist denomination at Leoni, Michigan, a small town east of Jackson, in 1845. In 1855 this institute united with the Leoni Seminary, a Methodist Protestant institution, to establish Michigan Union College. Legend states that members of the College became concerned about the environment at Leoni, which was nicknamed “Whiskey Town.” In 1859, this concern and other circumstances made it advisable to relocate or close. In the same year, Dr. Asa Mahan, pastor of the Plymouth Congregational Church in Adrian and a well-known educator, was encouraged by citizens of the community to establish a college. Mahan had served as the first president of Oberlin College and, before that, as an officer of Lane Theological Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Mahan and his colleagues invited the officials and supporters of the closing Michigan Union College to join in establishing the new college at Adrian. After the invitation was accepted, the story says, the library holdings were loaded on an ox-cart in March 1859, and transported 60 miles to the new campus site on the west side of Adrian. On March 28, 1859, Adrian College was chartered by the Michigan legislature as a degreegranting institution with Dr. Mahan as its first president. Through a series of consolidations and denomination unifications, the College has maintained its relationship with The United Methodist Church. For almost 100 years, the campus consisted of several brick buildings stretching along Madison Street. Most of today’s campus was woods and fields. In the mid-1950s, the College, encouraged by the generosity of Ray W. Herrick, embarked in a building program that established the basis for the current campus. Today, when students walk in the area bounded on the east by Madison Street and edged by Downs Hall, Valade Hall, Cornelius House and Herrick Tower, they tread on the same ground that students hurried across in 1859 as they rushed to classes, meals and social events. Now, however, the campus consists of 100 acres, over 20 academic and service buildings and 10 residence halls, plus apartments and themed housing.
ADRIAN COLLEGE RECOGNIZED AS A COLLEGE WITH THE “LEAST STUDENT DEBT LOAD” UPON GRADUATION In its 2011 edition of America’s “Best Colleges,” U.S. News & World Report ranks Adrian College as one of the top five schools in the Midwest of Regional Colleges to have the least student debt load upon graduation. This is the third consecutive year that Adrian College has been featured and singled out by U.S. News and World Report. In its 2009 edition of America’s “Best Colleges” and again in 2010, Adrian College received top billing as a school to watch and as the #1 Up-and-Coming School in the Midwest. “Affordability is the top parental concern that parents express with respect to their child’s education,” said Adrian College President Jeffrey R. Docking. “We’re extremely pleased that U.S. News and World Report ranked us in the top five Midwest colleges that have students graduating with a lower debt.”
