PREVIEW/HEAD COACH The Adrian College women's basketball team embarks on its 20th season with head coach Kathy Morris at the helm of the program. The Bulldogs are looking for a winning formula that will propel them into the upper echelon of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 2011-12. Adrian finished 7-18 overall and 4-12 in the MIAA a year ago which tied for seventh place with Kalamazoo. The team had their best stretch of games as the calendar turned into 2011 as they won three straight games against Anderson (54-53), Oberlin (65-60) and Trine (48-41). The end of the season proved to be a struggle as the team dropped its final eight games and failed to score more than 54 points in any of those contests. The team's offense averaged 50 points per game last season and further took a hit with leading scorer Kellee Wonders (8.4 ppg) not returning this season. Wonders was also the team's leading rebounder at 5.7 boards per game and also played 24.6 minutes per game. In terms of returning players, it starts with a very balanced core of scorers in senior guard Katie Ross (Clawson, Mich./Clawson HS), junior guard Kayla Galecka (Ovid, Mich./Ovid-Elsie HS) and sophomore forward LaQwana Dockery (Macomb Twp., Mich./Dakota HS). Ross is the team's leading returning scorer at 6.6 points per game. She is a primary outside shooter for the Bulldogs shooting 31.7 percent from behind the arc (32-of-101) a season ago. Ross played in all 25 games and also shot 76.5 percent (26-of-34) from the free throw stripe. Galecka and Dockery each averaged 5.6 points per contest. Galecka played in 23 games and made 13 starts in the backcourt for the Bulldogs. She led the team with 55 assists and also contributed 21 steals. Galecka connected on 30.1 percent from the floor and 32.4 percent from the three-point arc. She also shot 87.8 percent (43-of-49) from the free throw line. Dockery played in all 25 games and made 19 starts as a freshman. She averaged 20.8 minutes per game but needs to improve on her shooting stats. Dockery shot 32.2 percent from the floor and 50 percent at the charity stripe a season ago. She also averaged 2.6 rebounds per game and had 29 assists and 15 steals. The team begins its season on Friday, November 18 versus Hanover College at the Sodexo Classic Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Ohio Northern University. The team's home opener will be Tuesday, November 22 with a 6:00 PM tip against crosstown rival Siena Heights University.

ADRIAN COLLEGE Adrian College evolved from a theological institute founded by the Wesleyan Methodist denomination at Leoni, Michigan, a small town east of Jackson, in 1845. In 1855 this institute united with the Leoni Seminary, a Methodist Protestant institution, to establish Michigan Union College.
PLAYER BIOS
Legend states that members of the College became concerned about the environment at Leoni, which was nicknamed “Whiskey Town.” In 1859, this concern and other circumstances made it advisable to relocate or close. In the same year, Dr. Asa Mahan, pastor of the Plymouth Congregational Church in Adrian and a well-known educator, was encouraged by citizens of the community to establish a college. Mahan had served as the first president of Oberlin College and, before that, as an officer of Lane Theological Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Mahan and his colleagues invited the officials and supporters of the closing Michigan Union College to join in establishing the new college at Adrian. After the invitation was accepted, the story says, the library holdings were loaded on an oxcart in March 1859, and transported 60 miles to the new campus site on the west side of Adrian. On March 28, 1859, Adrian College was chartered by the Michigan legislature as a degreegranting institution with Dr. Mahan as its first president. Through a series of consolidations and denomination unifications, the College has maintained its relationship with The United Methodist Church. For almost 100 years, the campus consisted of several brick buildings stretching along Madison Street. Most of today’s campus was woods and fields. In the mid-1950s, the College, encouraged by the generosity of Ray W. Herrick, embarked in a building program that established the basis for the current campus. Today, when students walk in the area bounded on the east by Madison Street and edged by Downs Hall, Valade Hall, Cornelius House and Herrick Tower, they tread on the same ground that students hurried across in 1859 as they rushed to classes, meals and social events. Now, however, the campus consists of 100 acres, over 20 academic and service buildings and 10 residence halls, plus apartments and themed housing.

ADRIAN COLLEGE RECOGNIZED AS A COLLEGE WITH THE “LEAST STUDENT DEBT LOAD” UPON GRADUATION In its 2011 edition of America’s “Best Colleges,” U.S. News & World Report ranks Adrian College as one of the top five schools in the Midwest of Regional Colleges to have the least student debt load upon graduation. This is the third consecutive year that Adrian College has been featured and singled out by U.S. News and World Report. In its 2009 edition of America’s “Best Colleges” and again in 2010, Adrian College received top billing as a school to watch and as the #1 Up-and-Coming School in the Midwest. “Affordability is the top parental concern that parents express with respect to their child’s education,” said Adrian College President Jeffrey R. Docking. “We’re extremely pleased that U.S. News and World Report ranked us in the top five Midwest colleges that have students graduating with a lower debt.”
