Kathy Morris begins her 22nd season as head coach of the Adrian College women’s basketball team. She is the all-time wins leader in school history (229), passing Nancy Walsh on December 8, 2012 in a win over Kalamazoo (73-62). Morris in 2013-14 will tie Walsh with 22 seasons on the bench and has coached the most games at Adrian (527). Since 1997, Morris has guided the Bulldogs to three seasons of 15 wins or more (1997, 1999, 2002) and four appearances in the MIAA Tournament semifinals. The 2007-08 Lady Bulldogs defeated Calvin on the road in the tournament quarterfinals as the fifth seed before falling at Albion. One of the most successful campaigns came in 2002, when the Bulldogs finished third in the conference with a 17-10 record. In the 2002 MIAA Tournament, Adrian defeated Saint Mary’s in the opening round before falling to Kalamazoo in the semifinals. Morris coached a First-Team All MIAA player (RaSheida Edwards), a Second-Team MIAA player (Sarah Vincke) and two honorable mention players (Lisa Butts, Annie Morton). In all, Morris has coached 11 First-Team AllMIAA players in her tenure, including two MIAA scoring champions in Tricia Clark (1997) and Ann Terpstra (1998). She has also coached three 1,000 point scorers (Vincke, Terpstra and Renae Huyck). Vincke is second on Adrian’s career points list with 1,486. Morris is a member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM). She was a regional NCAA committee member from 2000-03. Before coming to Adrian, Morris served as an assistant basketball coach and head soccer coach at her alma mater, Muskingum College from 1989-92. In 1991, Muskingum’s basketball team advanced to the NCAA Division III championship game before falling to St. Thomas (Minn.). The following season, the Muskies advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16. A 1989 graduate of Muskingum College, Morris played four seasons on the women’s basketball team, serving as a captain during her junior and senior years. During her senior season, the Muskies finished 29-2 and were the first team in Ohio Athletic Conference history to go through the regular season and conference tournament undefeated. Muskingum advanced to the NCAA Elite 8 before falling to eventual national champion Elizabethtown (Pa.). Morris graduated third on Muskingum’s all-time scoring list with 1,560 points. She was inducted into the Muskingum College Hall of Fame in October 2000.

NCAA DIVISION III Division III Philosophy Academics are the primary focus for Division III student-athletes. The division minimizes the conflicts between athletics and academics and keeps studentathletes on a path to graduation through shorter practice and playing seasons, the number of contests, no redshirting and regional competition that reduces time away from academic studies. Studentathletes are integrated on campus and treated like all other members of the general student-body, keeping them focused on being a student first. Division III is engaged in division-wide discussions about implementing an Academic Success Rate in the near future. The NCAA has collected and reported graduation rates since 1991 for all students (using the six-year federal methodology) and for all student-athletes receiving athletically related financial aid.
success of their student-athletes, they have used a variety of criteria (for example, graduation, grade-point average, class rank). However, Division III recently completed a two-year pilot academic-reporting program that produced data from a representative sample showing that student-athletes graduate at higher rates than those of their student-body peers. Division III members will decide soon whether a division-wide academic reporting structure that produces an annual Academic Success Rate is appropriate.
While Division III students have been included in this process, a separate report on student-athletes in Division III has been absent because the division does not award athletics grants-in-aid. While many Division III institutions and conferences have tracked the academic
The Three D's Discover Division III student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their interests and passions beyond the classroom and field of play‌to discover themselves. Develop Division III institutions provide an environment that encourages student-athletes to develop into well-rounded adults. Small class sizes, the ability to participate in more than one sport, and an emphasis on participating activities outside of the classroom are all hallmarks of the Division III experience. Dedicate Division III institutions expect student-athletes to dedicate themselves to achieving their potential. Student-athletes must manage their busy schedules, keep up with class work and face the same challenges as the rest of the student-body.
