2010-11 WOMEN’S BASKETBALL YEARBOOK
SEASON PREVIEW
ADRIAN COLLEGE WO 2010-11 OUTLOOK
T
he 2010-11 edition of the women’s basketball team will be looking for a new identity after last season’s team was seeded fourth in the MIAA tournament. The team led by four seniors, lost in the semi-finals to top seeded and eventual national runner-up Hope College, 66-54, which was Hope’s closest game of the MIAA Tournament. This year’s squad returns four players that made at least one start to a team that lost its four top scorers and top two leaders in every other statistical category to graduation. Head Coach Kathy Morris knows it will be tough to pickup where last year’s team left off “We are extremely young, all the way from top to bottom,” Morris said. “One thing that you can try to keep the same is your intensity level, keeping those things that you can control will be key.” Despite boasting Jenn Headley what could be one of the most youthful rosters in the conference, the Bulldogs rank fifth in the pre-season MIAA Coaches poll. Morris needs her two junior captains, guard Katie Ross (Clawson, Mich./Clawson) and forward Jenn Headley (Hicksville, Ohio/Hicksville) to step-up and provide leadership to the underclassmen. Headley returns after starting in 16 games last season and is the team’s returning rebounder at 5.4 rpg while adding in 5.3 points per game. Ross is the leading scorer returning at 6.1 points per game and led the team with 36 three-pointers while playing in all 26 games. Another junior Kayla Fowler (Logansport, Ind./ Logansport) came off the bench in 19 games a season ago to average 1.7 points per game and 1.5 rebounds per game. Fowler will be another veteran leader to help the young squad move ahead this season as she has played in 43 games in her career. Junior forward Kellee Wonders (Pittsford, Mich./ Hudson) and sophomore forward Jasmine Byers (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King) are both new to the team as transfers. Wonders came from NCAA DII Hillsdale College and Byers from NCAA DIII Finlandia
University. Both will be looked to by coach Morris to provide leadership to the squad after getting game and practice experience. Most importantly they can both provide the athleticism and rebounding that the team has been missing the past few seasons. Sophomores Kayla Galecka (Ovid, Mich./OvidElsie) and Rachael Walker (Warrensville Hts., Ohio/ John F. Kennedy) gained experience as freshmen, Kayla Galecka starting a combined 19 games last season. Galecka filled in to run the offense at the point guard position last season for the Bulldogs and will look to take hold of the position this season. Galecka leads returning players in assists (1.8 apg), second in rebounds (2.9 rpg) and third in points (4.7 ppg). Coach Morris expects some of the freshmen to setup and fill in to provide depth to the roster. Some of the girls that could see playing time right away are guards Stephany Bohlmann (Webberville, Mich./Dansville), LaQwana Dockery (Macomb, Mich./Dakota), Justice Gwin (Cambridge City, Ind./ Connersville) and Jayma Nihart (Edgerton, Ohio/ Edgerton). The quartet can provide Adrian with quickness and solid outside shooting ability. On the inside, Senneca Scott (Livonia, Mich./Franklin) and Carly Tyson (Paris, Mich./Big Rapids) could see some time at the four spot, to give the Bulldogs an inside force for rebounding that they need. The team will open the season on the road as they face a tough task of traveling to the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford on Nov. 15, before returning home to host the third annual Tip-off Classic on Nov. 19-20. The tournament this year features Fontbonne, North Park and Wittenberg. Last season Wittenberg (NCAC) and Fontbonne (SLIAC) both won their conference championship a season ago. The Bulldogs travel across town to face rival Siena Heights on November 23. Adrian will start MIAA play on Dec. 1 as they host Calvin.

ADRIAN COLLEGE
ADRIAN COLLEGE WO
Adrian College evolved from a theological institute founded by the Wesleyan Methodist denomination at Leoni, Michigan, a small town east of Jackson, in 1845. In 1855 this institute united with the Leoni Seminary, a Methodist Protestant institution, to establish Michigan Union College.
PLAYER BIOS VARSITY BIOS
Legend states that members of the College became concerned about the environment at Leoni, which was nicknamed “Whiskey Town.” In 1859, this concern and other circumstances made it advisable to relocate or close. In the same year, Dr. Asa Mahan, pastor of the Plymouth Congregational Church in Adrian and a well-known educator, was encouraged by citizens of the community to establish a college. Mahan had served as the first president of Oberlin College and, before that, as an officer of Lane Theological Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio.
ADRIAN COLLEGE NAMED MILITARY FRIENDLY SCHOOL Adrian College is pleased to announce that it is included in today’s release of G.I. Jobs 2011 list of Military Friendly Schools. The list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools which are doing the most to embrace America’s veterans as students.
Dr. Mahan and his colleagues invited the officials and supporters of the closing Michigan Union College to join in establishing the new college at Adrian. After the invitation was accepted, the story says, the library holdings were loaded on an oxcart in March 1859, and transported 60 miles to the new campus site on the west side of Adrian.
“Adrian College is honored to be selected as a Military Friendly School,” said Dr. Jeffrey Docking, president of Adrian College. “While our efforts to assist veterans are small compared to their efforts to defend our country, we appreciate being recognized as a college that believes in patriotism and service to our country.”
On March 28, 1859, Adrian College was chartered by the Michigan legislature as a degreegranting institution with Dr. Mahan as its first president. Through a series of consolidations and denomination unifications, the College has maintained its relationship with The United Methodist Church.
Schools on the list range from state universities and private colleges to community colleges and trade schools. The common bond is their shared priority of recruiting students with military experience.
For almost 100 years, the campus consisted of several brick buildings stretching along Madison Street. Most of today’s campus was woods and fields. In the mid-1950s, the College, encouraged by the generosity of Ray W. Herrick, embarked in a building program that established the basis for the current campus.
QUICK FACTS
Facilities: Twenty-one buildings including residence halls that feature voice mail, internet and cable TV access in all student rooms; a 24-hour student center; a planetarium; an observatory; the Merillat Sport & Fitness Center; multi-sport performance stadium; Arrington Ice Arena, and Shipman Library. Student/faculty ratio: 13:1 Faculty: The faculty is dedicated to teaching excellence, and 88 percent hold the highest degree in their field.
Today, when students walk in the area bounded on the east by Madison Street and edged by Downs Hall, Valade Hall, Cornelius House and Herrick Tower, they tread on the same ground that students hurried across in 1859 as they rushed to classes, meals and social events. Now, however, the campus consists of 100 acres, over 20 academic and service buildings and 10 residence halls, plus apartments and themed housing.
