SEASON PREVIEW The Adrian College women’s hockey program has now been around for five seasons and in that short period of time has made a name for themselves. The program has ranked themselves among the upper echelon of NCAA Division III and also in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA). In three years with the NCHA, the Bulldogs have finished second twice in the regular season and last season finished third under first-year head coach Chad Davis. The key moving forward for the program will be to continue its growth and find itself competing for the top spot in the NCHA each and every season. The Bulldogs do have an NCAA Tournament appearance under their belt as they won the NCHA O’Brien Cup during the 2010-11 season. A year ago, Davis and the Bulldogs finished 16-10-2 overall and 12-6-2 in the rugged NCHA. This year has a bit of a different feel however as the team lost All-NCHA performer and Second Team All-American Kelly Salis on defense and All-NCHA forward Olivia Rork to graduation. In addition, the team has a total of 16 freshmen and sophomores on the roster with just seven combined juniors and seniors. “My first season has helped us form a new identity and team culture,” said Davis. “The group we have returning along with our incoming class has bought into our team concepts. We are very excited to get started this season. I already see something special in this group we have this season. Each player looks out for each other and wants to help the team. They all have a high competitive level and want to do whatever it takes to win. We have a great mix of players, they all bring something different to the table. The chemistry will be created on its own throughout the season. Different challenges and situations throughout the season will help this team grow together.” The schedule this season could be a challenge for the Bulldogs. The team will have 17 away games and just eight games at Arrington Ice Arena where they have a .746 win percentage over the last five years. After an opening weekend series against Augsburg College, the team travels to perenial powerhouse UW-River Falls followed by a trip to UW-Eau Claire. The team welcomes second-place from a year ago in the NCHA, UW-Superior, to Arrington in mid-January. Chatham and Buffalo State are the other non-conference opponents during the 2012-13 season. “Travel has a positive affect on our team,” commented Davis. “I have found it has made our players very mentally tough and we embrace the opportunity to play on the road. We talk about how many miles we travel and how we are road warriors. When we are on the road we are able to focus and it helps us come together as a team - spending 18-20 hours on a bus will do this.” The Bulldogs seem set in net with senior goaltender Brittany Zeches (Westland, Mich.) returning after an All-NCHA campaign in her first season after transferring from Wayne State (Mich.). Zeches saw action in 19 games and made 16 starts between the pipes. She posted a 2.05 goals against average and a .913 save percentage. Zeches went 11-4-1 with three shutouts while logging 1,026 minutes.

“We are very confident in both our goaltenders,” said Davis. “Our depth is great and we feel we have a great tandem. Zeches is a proven goaltender, who knows how to win games in the net. We know she will be ready to battle every night. Allie Carter is a very talented and technical goaltender. She competes and has an outstanding work ethic. We expect her to be a successful NCAA goaltender. We want both goaltenders to lead the way this season.” The Bulldogs have a couple of quality scoring options that made an impact as freshmen last season. Hannah McGowan (Redford, Mich.) was named All-NCHA Honorable Mention and was also named to the All-NCHA Rookie Team in 2011-12. McGowan led the team last year with 26 points. She ranked second on the team with 14 goals and also chipped in 12 assists. McGowan was credited with six power play goals and will be looked upon for increased production as a sophomore. Courtney Millar (Newport, Mich.) was also a selection to the All-NCHA Rookie Team after finishing the year with five goals and five assists. Millar played in 25 contests as a freshman and was a +3 with 48 penalty minutes. Junior forward Danielle Smith (Highland, Mich.) finished third on the team in points (23) a year ago collecting seven goals and a team-high 16 assists. Smith will look to add to her goal total in 2012-13 as her aggressive style of play could yield those tough goals around the net. Senior captain Sarah Connelly (Commerce, Mich.) played her first season in 2011-12 with the Bulldogs after transferring from Niagara University. Connelly’s leadership was seen immediately by her teammates who voted her as a captain. Connelly played in 28 games a year ago and scored seven goals while also recording seven assists. Connelly scored twice on the power play and served 34 penalty minutes. “I feel very confident in this year’s group of forwards,” said Davis. “McGowan is a special talent while Smith and Connelly provide gutsy effort every time on the ice. We have a hand full of new players that have been very impressive. Kelsey Kusch, Devyn Fitzhenry, Abby Kibler and Kaitlyn Ryan have all been absolutely top notch in all aspects of the game.” On the blueline the Bulldogs return senior Kristin Maton (Oakville, Ont.) and junior Alix Vallee (Belleville, Ont.) as a dynamic Canadian duo. Maton played in 27 games last season and scored three goals while also contributing six assists. She led the team with a +9 and scored two of her three goals on the power play. Vallee was in the lineup for every game and finished with four assists and 34 shots on goal. Vallee has a good knack for playing sound defense on the penalty kill and will continue her solid play this season. “Our defense will miss Kelly’s leadership and skill, but I think as the season progresses our defense will see great improvement,” said Davis. “We feel Audrey Noles aned Emily Marks have been a huge upgrade to our blueline. They bring skill and toughness to the position.”

ARRINGTON ICE ARENA Arrington Ice Arena was officially dedicated and opened for business on October 19, 2007 as the men’s varsity hockey team squared off in their inaugural game against Potsdam State. The Bulldogs christened the new facility with a resounding 9-1 win in front of a packed crowd, who were also in attendance to see Lord Stanley’s Cup on loan from the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. The facility is home to Adrian College’s men’s and women’s varsity Division III hockey teams as well as the ACHA Division I and III men’s hockey teams, ACHA women’s hockey team and the synchronized skating team. The arena is named after Dr. Robyn Arrington, Jr. and his brother, fellow Adrian alumnus Col. Harold Arrington. The brothers donated $3 million on behalf of their family. The $5.5 million project is also a place where local residents can use the facility for recreational activities. The operating schedule includes open skates for the community, learn-to-skate programs for children and adults and hockey programs for people of various ages and abilities. The arena consists of a single sheet of ice, 550 chair-back seats, a media press box, a president’s seating area, concession stand, pro shop with skate rental, offices for ice sports coaches and personnel and locker rooms. For more information about Arrington Ice Arena, visit the website at (www.arringtonicearena.com). Arrington Ice Arena has already been praised as one of the best hockey venues in Division III. The arena has hosted such events as a Detroit Red Wing Alumni Game and the last four MCHA Harris Cups. In addition, Arrington Ice Arena has played host to the 2010 and 2011 ACHA Division I All-Star Game.

We are a campus of confidence, heart, and determination. We aren’t your average college experience ... we are distinctive. We are made up of achievers, believers, entrepreneurs, and leaders. We are more than simply a “small college,” we are the roots of change. We inspire, ignite, and grow here. It’s not about winning championships... but let’s face it, that is what we do here. We throw winning passes, hit home runs, score hat-tricks, and serve up wins in nearly every sport on campus. Maybe it’s because our athletes are strong — both in their sports and in their classes. The average GPA for our student athlete is above a 3.0, and with over 50% of our student body involved in some form of athletic activity, that says something. Actually, it says a lot.

We value a winning tradition on and off the court, the field, the ice or wherever our students spend their training time. Visit adrianbulldogs.com for more information

NCHA CONFERENCE The structure and history of the NCHA Men's Division certainly provided a spring board for the creation of the Women's Division in 2000. As girls' high school hockey was gaining in popularity in the Upper Midwest in the 1990s, particularly in Minnesota, and several colleges began sponsoring club and varsity teams, NCHA athletic directors began informal discussions in the later part of the decade about the idea of a women's league. In January of 2000, they set their sights on the 2000-01 season. At the spring meeting in April, under the leadership of then-NCHA president and UW-Stevens Point Athletics Director Frank O'Brien, a plan for the creation of the Women's Conference was ratified. The five charter members were Lake Forest College, UW-Eau Claire, UW-River Falls, UW-Stevens Point and UW-Superior. The inaugural O'Brien Cup - named after the league president - was won by UW-River Falls. The NCHA Women's Conference has grown over the past decade at a faster pace and to a greater number of programs than its founders ever imagined. Finlandia University joined for the 2003-04 season and Concordia University Wisconsin did so in 200708. More recent expansion included Adrian College and Marian University in the 2009-10 season as well as St. Norbert and St. Scholastica in 2010-11. The Women's Conference is no stranger to NCAA tournament success. The 2002-03 UW-River Falls Falcons were the first-ever NCHA team to earn a bid to the tournament. UW-Stevens Point qualified the following year, losing a heartbreaker 2-1 to Middlebury in the championship game. Of the ten years an NCHA team has been in the NCAA tournament, a team has reached the Semifinals five times. The 2010-11 season marked the first time the Women's Conference had sent more than one team to the NCAA tournament, with Adrian earning the NCHA's automatic berth and UW-River Falls earning an at-large berth. The NCHA Women's Conference originally played a four team playoff championship, held at the site of the highest seeded team. In 2007-08 the league had six teams qualify for the playoffs, with all games being played over three days at the high seed. Since the 2009-10 season, eight teams now qualify for the playoffs. The quarterfinal round features a 2+mini game format, while the semifinals and finals are single-elimination games played at the site of the highest remaining seed. The championship game has been decided by one goal seven times through the first 11 finals.
