2010-11 WOMEN’S HOCKEY YEARBOOK

ADRIAN COLLEGE SEASON PREVIEW / ARRINGTON ICE ARENA

2 0 1 0 - 11 O U T L O O K The Adrian College women’s hockey team had a solid season in 2009-10. They placed second in the NCHA standings in their first year as a member with a conference record of 11-4-1 and an overall record of 15-11-2. The 2010-11 roster has eight freshmen that will look to step in and play right away with a mixture of solid veterans. “It’s going to be an exciting time this year,” Lomanto explained. “With the team’s first senior class and the enthusiasm our younger players bring, we have a good chance at making a run come post-season tournament time.” Adrian will be led by the solid senior core of Ashley Aiken, Lauren Anastos, Jenna Corbin, Nicky Futers, Jessica Grubbs, Stacey Kempson and Danielle Maludy who have played all four seasons with one another at Adrian. Grubbs, the team leader in goals the past two seasons, will look to have a repeat performance of the 08-09 season where she led the nation in goals scored. Kempson will look to rebound to her previous form where she led the Bulldogs in assists in back-to-back seasons. Maludy will provide leadership on the defensive front that returns only two players from last season’s roster. Leading the juniors will be Olivia Rork, Kelly Salis and Brooke Zaleski. Zaleski will look to have a big season after leading the team in assists and was third on the team in goals. Salis, at 5-10, will be a defensive force on the blue-line as she had a team-high plus/minus of 10. After losing three-year starter Dana Timm who holds career records in several categories, the Bulldogs will look to several possible candidates as starting goalie. Adrian will be young in goal as no current players have

logged over 100 minutes between the pipes. To start the season, it will be a battle of the Emily’s as Emily Engel and Emily Michelin will compete for the starting spot. In addition, Ashley Drop who filled in at times for Timm last season could steal some minutes in net. Every freshmen that Lomanto has brought in this season will get a chance to play and contribute to the team. “Allowing the freshmen to play and compete right away will help the team as they gain playing experience rather than sitting on the bench and watching,” Lomanto said. Key players on the defensive side will be Rebecca Hampton, who has a long reach and has the potential to play similar to Salis. Alix Vallee plays a very defensive style of play, but can also contribute in the offensive zone. Amanda Gay rounds out the defensive freshmen. Offensively, Lomanto has brought in several players who have a great knowledge of the game already and are able to read and react to game situations. Nina Laurie has great hands and Morgan Poole shows the patience of a veteran when handling the puck. Danielle Smith has the potential to be a terrific goal-scorer down the line. With the final piece of the freshman class for the Bulldogs being Lauren Turner who is a superb passer. The Bulldogs will open the season with a nonconference road game against Cortland St. on October 23. The first home contest for the Bulldogs will be on October 29 at 7:00 p.m. as they host Oswego St. A home series with non-conference opponent Rochester Inst. on January 7-8 could be a key series for the season. Key road series include tough match-ups including defending conference tournament champions, and pre-season favorite, UW-River Falls on January 29-30 and a trip to regular season champion Lake Forest February 4-5.

Arrington Ice Arena Arrington Ice Arena was officially dedicated and opened for business on October 19, 2007 as the men’s varsity hockey team squared off in their inaugural game against Potsdam State. The Bulldogs christened the new facility with a resounding 9-1 win in front of a packed crowd, who were also in attendance to see Lord Stanley’s Cup on loan from the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. The facility is home to Adrian College’s men’s and women’s varsity Division III hockey teams as well as the ACHA Division I and III Gold and Black men’s hockey teams and the synchronized skating team. The arena is named after Dr. Robyn Arrington, Jr. and his brother, fellow Adrian alumnus Col. Harold Arrington. The brothers donated $3 million on behalf of their family. The $5.5 million project is also a place where local residents can participate in recreational activities. The operating schedule includes open skates for the community, learn-to-skate programs for children and adults and hockey programs for people of various ages and abilities. The arena consists of a single sheet of ice, 550 chair-back seats, a media press box, a president’s seating area, concession stand, pro shop with skate rental, offices for ice sports coaches and personnel and locker rooms. For more information about Arrington Ice Arena, visit the website at (www.arringtonicearena.com). Arrington Ice Arena has already been praised as one of the best hockey venues in Division III. The arena has hosted such events as a Detroit Red Wing Alumni Game, the 2009 and 2010 MCHA Harris Cup Final Four and the 2010 ACHA Division I All-Star Game.

2010-11 WOMEN’S HOCKEY YEARBOOK

ADRIAN COLLEGE

ADRIAN COLLEGE

Adrian College evolved from a theological institute founded by the Wesleyan Methodist denomination at Leoni, Michigan, a small town east of Jackson, in 1845. In 1855 this institute united with the Leoni Seminary, a Methodist Protestant institution, to establish Michigan Union College.

PLAYER BIOS

Legend states that members of the College became concerned about the environment at Leoni, which was nicknamed “Whiskey Town.” In 1859, this concern and other circumstances made it advisable to relocate or close. In the same year, Dr. Asa Mahan, pastor of the Plymouth Congregational Church in Adrian and a well-known educator, was encouraged by citizens of the community to establish a college. Mahan had served as the first president of Oberlin College and, before that, as an officer of Lane Theological Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Mahan and his colleagues invited the officials and supporters of the closing Michigan Union College to join in establishing the new college at Adrian. After the invitation was accepted, the story says, the library holdings were loaded on an oxcart in March 1859, and transported 60 miles to the new campus site on the west side of Adrian. On March 28, 1859, Adrian College was chartered by the Michigan legislature as a degreegranting institution with Dr. Mahan as its first president. Through a series of consolidations and denomination unifications, the College has maintained its relationship with The United Methodist Church. For almost 100 years, the campus consisted of several brick buildings stretching along Madison Street. Most of today’s campus was woods and fields. In the mid-1950s, the College, encouraged by the generosity of Ray W. Herrick, embarked in a building program that established the basis for the current campus. Today, when students walk in the area bounded on the east by Madison Street and edged by Downs Hall, Valade Hall, Cornelius House and Herrick Tower, they tread on the same ground that students hurried across in 1859 as they rushed to classes, meals and social events. Now, however, the campus consists of 100 acres, over 20 academic and service buildings and 10 residence halls, plus apartments and themed housing.

ADRIAN COLLEGE NAMED MILITARY FRIENDLY SCHOOL Adrian College is pleased to announce that it is included in today’s release of G.I. Jobs 2011 list of Military Friendly Schools. The list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools which are doing the most to embrace America’s veterans as students. “Adrian College is honored to be selected as a Military Friendly School,” said Dr. Jeffrey Docking, president of Adrian College. “While our efforts to assist veterans are small compared to their efforts to defend our country, we appreciate being recognized as a college that believes in patriotism and service to our country.” Schools on the list range from state universities and private colleges to community colleges and trade schools. The common bond is their shared priority of recruiting students with military experience.
