SEASON PREVIEW For the first time in program history, the road to a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) title goes through Adrian College. It may have been a long time coming, but after 23 years the Adrian College women’s soccer team captured its first MIAA championship with a 14-2 league mark and a school-record mark of 17-5 overall. The program has seen big strides since head coach Ali Alamdari took over and entering his fifth season he sees more success in the future. “We want to be in competition for the MIAA title again this year,” said Alamdari. “We want to make it into the NCAA Tournament. I felt like we made a strong case last year, but we want to make a stronger case this time around. We had a motto last year of just focusing on daily improvement and big things will come. Our focus really is the same this year because you can’t look too far ahead.” The Bulldogs are very fortunate because all five of the team’s top point scorers are back. The team averaged 2.64 goals per game a year ago and limited its opponents to just one goal per game. Adrian features several players who can carry the scoring load, which is a great feeling heading into 2012. “I think goal scoring is one area that has been addressed,” commented Alamdari. “The first few years as head coach the philosophy was defensive-minded. Now we feel like we can take the game to our opponent. Our talent is elite at the NCAA Division III level, so we feel like if we click on the offensive end our chances of winning is greater.” Junior Sam Barker (Temperance, Mich./Bedford HS) is one of the more talented players in the country and was named Third Team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) in 2011. Barker already owns the school scoring record with 101 points in just two seasons and scored a whopping 25 goals a year ago. “I don’t think we know what the future holds for Sam this year,” said Alamdari. “Her role will be different this year based on what opponents do. I think certain teams showed her respect and double-teamed her and we will probably see more of that this year. How she handles the pressure of being such a big target will determine how she goes from here. She will continue to be a very important piece to our success.” Proving that this team is more than just a one-trick pony are a couple of players who also had success as freshmen. Erin Weide (Madison Heights, Mich./Bishop Foley HS) and Ellery Karsten (St. Joseph, Mich./St. Joseph HS) each scored seven goals to rank second on the team. Weide earned Second Team All-Region accolades by also leading the team with nine assists for a total of 23 points. Karsten came off the bench and provided a spark on offense. “We are fortunate to have quite a few players who can score including Erin Weide,” exclaimed Alamdari. “She was phenomenal last year as a freshman and was sometimes overshadowed. She earned All-Region honors which was
4
the highest honor Adrian had ever achieved except for it was the same year that Barker was an All-American. Ellery Karsten made an impact last year off the bench and scored seven goals. She will be another key player on offense this season.” Senior Lauren Cozzi (Roselle, Ill./St. Viator HS) scored six goals a year ago and is a solid possession player. She has some of the best footwork in the conference and will add valuable leadership on the field. “Lauren Cozzi is also a big piece that has been moved around quite a bit because of her versatility,” said Alamdari. “She is also a huge scoring and playmaking threat. On defense, seniors Patti Vaassen (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline HS), Katie Caruso (Novi, Mich./Novi HS) and Claire Phillips (Saline, Mich./ Saline HS) form a formidable trio against opposing offenses. Vaassen contributed three goals and six assists which was great output from the back row. Caruso and Phillips also bring toughness and experience to a team which posted seven shutouts in 2011. “Patti Vaassen is a threat on set pieces and was also an all-conference defender and we expect more of the same,” said Alamdari. “Katie Caruso and Claire Phillips are back on defense and each has done a great job over the offseason trying to improve their game.” The program is simply not content with just winning one championship. Coach Alamdari sees that you must be prepared every day for those who wish to knock you off the pedestal. ““I think it is not a specific area of the field that needs improving, but it is complacency. How do you take a year of success and turn it into a tradition of success. I believe we have a lot to learn in that regard. Our coaching staff needs to make sure that our team is focused and don’t take anything for granted. Opportunities like this don’t come around very often, so we need to be ready to take on all challengers.” The motivation for this year is pretty simple. The Bulldogs were so close to reaching the NCAA Tournament and that heartache has been driving them harder than ever. “The biggest thing was that we knew our chances were slim last year after seeing some upsets around the country,” explained Alamdari. “We wanted the team to watch the selection show and as they watched the comment that kept coming up was ‘We have not heard of many of these teams before’. It was a good indication that we are fighting just like many other teams for national recognition.”

COACHING STAFF Ali Alamdari
5th Season (49-23-8) Western Mich. (2001) 517-265-5161 x. 4054 aalamdari@adrian.edu Ali Alamdari will enter his fifth season as the head coach of the Adrian College women’s soccer team in 2012. 2011 Season Review The Bulldogs completed a major team goal by winning the school’s first-ever Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) title during the regular season. Adrian finished the season with a school-record for wins going 17-5 overall and 14-2 in the MIAA. The team advanced to the MIAA Tournament final by fell just one win short of the NCAA Tournament. Sam Barker was named a NSCAA All-American, becoming the first soccer player in school history to earn that achievement. Barker was named Third Team All-American and she broke her own school single-season goal record with 25 and the all-time career scoring record with 101 points. Her career point total ranks 12th all-time in MIAA history and her goal total ranks third. Barker was also named MIAA Most Valuable Player. Erin Weide and Kellie Irwin along with Barker were also named NSCAA All-Region. Weide led the team and was second in the MIAA with nine assists. She was also second on the team and tied for ninth in the league with seven goals. Irwin who was also a 2011 First Team All-MIAA honoree, was the backbone of the Adrian’s defense. 2010 Season Review The Lady Bulldogs had an 11-6-3 overall record and went 4-4 in the MIAA. Three players were selected for All-MIAA. Sam Barker earned First Team Honors, while Patti Vaassen and Lauren Cozzi were selected on the Second Team. Barker had a record-breaking season as a rookie as she set Adrian College single-season records for points, goals and shots. In addition, she already ranks eighth in AC history in points and goals. The team made it to the MIAA semifinals. 2009 Season Review Coach Alamdari led the 2009 Bulldogs to a record of 11-6-2, ending the season ranked #10 in the NSCAA DIII Central Region. Adrian finished the year as the MIAA Runners-Up, and saw four players honored with All-MIAA nominations, including NSCAA AllCentral Region nominee Lindsay Chitwood who led the MIAA in scoring. The 2009 Bulldogs were nationally ranked in several NCAA statistical categories. Out of over 425 DIII teams, Adrian ranked 10th in Team Save Percentage (0.889), 37th in Goals Against Average (0.662), and 54th in Shutout Percentage (0.526). The season saw several school records broken including Fewest Goals Against, Highest Win Percentage, and Highest MIAA Finish. 2008 Season Review In his first season at Adrian in 2008, Alamdari took the program to a new level as he coached the Bulldogs to a 10-6-3 overall record including the school’s first-ever berth in the MIAA Tournament Semifinals. The 10-win season was only the second double-digit win season in the last twenty years at AC. Under the direction of Alamdari, Adrian placed two players on the All-MIAA Team in 2008. The Bulldogs were also recognized as the 12th Most Improved Program nationally out of over 425 NCAA Division III women’s soccer programs. Adrian Soccer History Alamdari’s teams over the past four seasons have compiled a
record of 49-23-8 including a MIAA record of 28-12-2. When you place those numbers against the history of the program, it is truly a success story. From the beginning of the program in 1989 through 2007, the Bulldog women’s soccer program had just one winning season (12-7-1 in 2002) and had never finished above .500 in the MIAA standings. Alamdari is currently first in career wins at AC. Away from Adrian Before taking over as the head coach at Adrian, Alamdari served as the assistant coach for the Albion College women’s soccer program and helped the team to a 25-7-6 record in two seasons. The team made a turnaround upon his arrival going 19-17-2 in the previous two campaigns. Albion captured the 2007 MIAA Tournament and Alamdari mentored all goalkeepers including MIAA Player of the Year Caitlin Bowman. During the summer, Alamdari has served on the camp staff at the University of Michigan since 2008. He also serves as the founder and director of the Adrian Soccer Academy which formed in the summer of 2009. Prior to joining the college ranks, Alamdari served as the Women’s Head Coach for Loy Norrix High School in Kalamazoo, Michigan and Goalkeeper Coach for Portage Northern High School in Portage, Michigan and was active in the club scene with TKO Premier and Kalamazoo Kingdom Reserves. Coach Alamdari is licensed by the NSCAA and USSF, and holds a Master of Arts degree in Performance Driven Leadership from Western Michigan University.

It’s not about winning championships... but let’s face it, that is what we do here. We throw winning passes, hit home runs, score hat-tricks, and serve up wins in nearly every sport on campus. Maybe it’s because our athletes are strong — both in their sports and in their classes. The average GPA for our student athlete is above a 3.0, and with over 50% of our student body involved in some form of athletic activity, that says something. Actually, it says a lot.
We value a winning tradition on and off the court, the field, the ice or wherever our students spend their training time. Visit adrianbulldogs.com for more information

It’s getting your master’s degree in five years; it’s being a scholar, an athlete, and a humanitarian ... but more than just a number.
