Adrian College Bulldogs

SEASON PREVIEW Head Coach David Kwan has the team focused on improving yet again this season. In his first season as head coach, he took the Bulldogs from seventh place to nearly seeing post-season action. The MIAA preseason poll chose Adrian College to finish fourth in the conference this year. This has Kwan and his team optimistic about another major step forward for the program. The Bulldogs will be led in 2013 by their captains: senior libero Kristi Walker, senior setter Carly Tyson, and sophomore setter Nicole Motz. The team is returning several impact players from 2012 including Second Team All-MIAA outside hitter sophomore Jordan Brisson. Brisson was the focal point of the offense in 2012. She totaled 309 kills and almost three kills per set. In 2013, she will be asked to continue this offensive presence to help Adrian College build on the successes of 2012. She will be accompanied by junior middle hitter Linnea Berriman, sophomore right side hitter Chelsea Jordan and senior outside hitter Ellie Mindick. Each of these players were contributors a year ago and will be asked to have an even bigger impact in 2013.

These key returners will be joined by a recruiting class that has Kwan excited and one that he believes will have an immediate impact. The team will open their season on August 30th in the Elmhurst Classic against University of Chicago, who is ranked 14th nationally. The Bulldogs will play four games over this opening weekend in non-conference competition. The team will then open both at home and in conference on September 6th against Kalamazoo at 7 p.m. The 2013 schedule is highlighted by two matches against both #1 Calvin and #4 Hope. These conference matches will define the team’s season. The Bulldogs have also highlighted the October 15th home match against Alma. The loss in last year’s contest prevented Adrian College from seeing postseason action. The Bulldogs have some tough competition, but Kwan welcomes the opportunity, “We play three nationally ranked teams, but that is what we want. We look forward to the teams labeled as the best. We use these matches to show everyone how hard we compete, and we use these moments to prove ourselves.”

COACHING STAFF David Kwan

Head Coach 2nd Season York University (1999) 517-264-3842 dkwan@adrian.edu David Kwan enters his second season at the women’s volleyball helm at Adrian College. Kwan took the Bulldogs from seventh place to nearly making the post season in his first year. Prior to Adrian College, Coach Kwan spent nearly the last decade as the head women’s volleyball coach at Defiance College. Kwan brings an impressive resume that includes: numerous college coaching accolades; multiple certifications; over 15 years of club, summer camp and community involvement in volleyball; and publication in the award-winning American Volleyball Coaches Association technical journal. Kwan began his involvement with collegiate volleyball while completing both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at York University, outside of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Having earned an undergraduate degree with honors in Kinesiology and Health Sciences in 1999, and a 2001 graduate degree of Kinesiology in Coaching; Kwan maintained roots with York as an assistant coach with the women’s volleyball team and mentored four All-Canadian athletes. While at York, Kwan also taught physical education courses and had the opportunity to work extensively with two-time Canadian Olympic Beach Volleyball Coach Hernan Humana. In 2002-03, Kwan became an assistant men’s volleyball coach with Humber College, helping the Hawks to a top-four finish in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Championships and an undefeated regular season. In between college coaching in Canada, Kwan coached the Toronto West Volleyball Club for five years and the Elite Summer Regional High Performance Team for Ontario from 1998-2001. While with the latter, he earned gold and bronze medals in his final two seasons, respectively. Kwan also obtained a Level 4 status through the National Coaching Certification Program and was employed as a strength and conditioning coach and personal trainer for Sports Clubs of Canada-Plaza Club. Prior to joining the MIAA for the upcoming season, Kwan left the HCAC (Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference) after coaching the Defiance women’s volleyball team with impressive results. Kwan’s accolades with the Yellow Jackets include: HCAC Coach of the Year (2003), school record 26-5 season, highest winning percentage for first 60 matches, three top-three conference finishes, 150 wins and coaching almost two dozen All-HCAC athletes.

NCAA DIVISION III Division III Philosophy Academics are the primary focus for Division III student-athletes. The division minimizes the conflicts between athletics and academics and keeps studentathletes on a path to graduation through shorter practice and playing seasons, the number of contests, no redshirting and regional competition that reduces time away from academic studies. Studentathletes are integrated on campus and treated like all other members of the general studentbody, keeping them focused on being a student first. Division III is engaged in division-wide discussions about implementing an Academic Success Rate in the near future. The NCAA has collected and reported graduation rates since 1991 for all students (using the six-year federal methodology) and for all studentathletes receiving athletically related financial aid.

While Division III students have been included in this process, a separate report on student-athletes in Division III has been absent because the division does not award athletics grants-in-aid. While many Division III institutions and conferences have tracked the academic success of their student-athletes, they have used a variety of criteria (for example, graduation, grade-point average, class rank). However, Division III recently completed a two-year pilot academicreporting program that produced data from a representative sample showing that student-athletes graduate at higher rates than those of their student-body peers. Division III members will decide soon whether a division-wide academic reporting structure that produces an annual Academic Success Rate is appropriate.

The Three D's Discover Division III student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their interests and passions beyond the classroom and field of play‌to discover themselves. Develop Division III institutions provide an environment that encourages student-athletes to develop into well-rounded adults. Small class sizes, the ability to participate in more than one sport, and an emphasis on participating activities outside of the classroom are all hallmarks of the Division III experience. Dedicate Division III institutions expect student-athletes to dedicate themselves to achieving their potential. Student-athletes must manage their busy schedules, keep up with class work and face the same challenges as the rest of the student-body.
