Thanks so much for picking up this edition of Radar, your student magazine! This year has been a very busy and exciting year for RGU:Union. The Union is here to represent students, provide fun, social opportunities and to support you during your time at RGU. The Union is run by a team of elected student Presidents and Vice Presidents. Over the past year, we have been working on a huge amount of projects and events to enhance your experience of studying at RGU! In September, we welcomed thousands of new students with our Freshers Week events, featuring live music, stand up comedy, DJ’s, club nights, bus tours, barbeques, ceilidh, Freshers Fayre and much more. We also launched our Safe Taxi Scheme, which gives students an emergency way to get home using their student card as payment, the scheme has already been recognised as national awards. October saw the launch of our new international representatives programme, and the annual Give It A Go Week, which introduces students to the wide variety of societies, sports clubs and student groups we have. It’s been an amazing year, and I have been delighted to have been your President representing your views and working on your behalf. There is so much that goes on at RGU, so this magazine aims to give you an insight into what has been happening, touch upon some of the interests and hobbies of our students and give a flavour of what it is like to be a student at Robert Gordon University. We hope you enjoy it!

RED TENT EVENT RGU Feminist Society presents a Red Tent Event created by Shelagh Brown in collaboration with Women’s Equality Champion, Anna Hughes MacIver

A Red Tent event is usually described as a meeting place where women come together for mutual support where you can share stories, experiences and skills with women of all ages and background. It’s somewhere you can take time out from commitments to family and work. On one of many websites dedicated to Red Tent events, www.redtentdirectory.com, describes a Red Tent event like this: “Women’s lives have changed immeasurably in the last 50 years but we still live in a desperately unequal world where many women feel powerless and unheard. In particular we have yet to

achieve balance in terms of leadership and how decisions are made. Meanwhile shocking levels of violence and discrimination against women continue in our communities and around the world. The Red Tent movement is about creating

regular feminine spaces for women to share their stories, rest and gain strength to meet the challenges of our time and their daily lives. This is work that we believe will make a difference not only to women themselves but also to all the people around them. In short, we ‘know’ that the simple act of creating safe and empowering feminine spaces is life and world changing work.”

The event will be happening on Friday 6th May, on a full moon when Red Tent events usually happen. The art installation will be open all day from 11am till 6pm with the lunch and conversation part happening from 12 till 2pm. The event is being held in Room SB37a, Garthdee Annexe, RGU.

This event will be our own independent interpretation of a Red Tent event, an art installation, and social event. Join us for a light lunch and conversation. We’ll bring some ideas to talk about and please bring yours too.

We are interested in collaborating with other creative people with skills in fine art, photography, design, media and also

events and catering. Any and all contributions are welcome! We’d love to hear from you.

If you’re interested in getting involved or just want to find out a bit more information about the event then you can get in contact with us here: Shelagh Brown- s.m.brown1@rgu.ac.uk Anna Hughes MacIver- womanschampion@rguunion.co.uk PAGE.19

CHAMPIONS At University lots of people get involved in student activities provided by the Union, usually by either joining societies or sports clubs. A role that people may not know about though, Equality Champions.

I’m the Women’s Champion so let’s find

out a bit more about who we are and what we do!

The Students’ Union introduced Equality Champions in 2013/14. These are students who self-define into protected characteristics and minority groups, and act as ambassadors for their equality strands. The current Equality Champions at RGU are Kevinna Harrigan (LGBT+ Champion), Carol Mapley (Mature and LGBT+ Champion), Opeyemi Oladejo (Faith and Belief Champion) and finally there’s me, Anna MacIver (Women’s Champion).

Our role is to contribute and provide

challenge to the Equality and Diversity Advisory Group in the equality strand being championed, seek the engagement of employees and students in the work and activities of the Equality and Diversity Advisory Group, provide leadership in the University in the area championed, keep up to date on developments in the area championed and actively contribute to the implementation of the Equality and Diversity Annual Plan.

As

an Equality Champion another part of our role is to also host liberation weeks where we will be leading campaigns and representing the views of various liberations groups at RGU to ensure that there is a vibrant and diverse culture at RGU, which is safe and free from discrimination and prejudice.

The liberation weeks so far have been the 22nd to the 26th February for LGBT+, 11th to the 15th April for Disability and 7th March to the 11th March for Women.

For this years Women’s Equality weeks I planned a range of events. There was a Safe Space meeting, Women in Leadership events and also a talk with SNP MP Kirsty Blackman.

In my role as an Equality Champion I

want to continue to work with Yvonne Ofordu, the Union’s new part-time student President of Education and Welfare, to organise safe spaces so students can come talk to us about any problems they’re facing and changes that they feel need to be made at the University and also to work with other societies such as the Feminist Society.
