Local Action Works! Climate Week, North East 2017 is changing the focus, from Awareness to Action. What’s Climate Week about? How big an issue is Climate Change? Is it all hopeless? Is it all a lie? What’s it to me? What can I do? What should I not do? Going to and taking part in events during Climate Week will help you answer these questions and more. Climate Week, in the run-up to Earth Hour, will see a wide range of exciting events taking place around Aberdeen and the Shire between the 18th to 25th March 2017. EVENTS RUNNING THROUGHOUT THE WEEK Launch of Clean Up Aberdeen The City Council’s initiative will hold a series of activities to encourage residents to take on a clean-up of their area. Saturday 18th MArch Fraserburgh Cycle with Aberdeenshire Rangers Host: Aberdeenshire Council Location: Fraserburgh Time: 11am

Enjoy a pleasant 14 mile cycle along quiet roads on the outskirts of Fraserburgh and back along the Formartine & Buchan Way. This route is deemed moderate, so some cycling experience is necessary. Free event for adults only. Booking is essential. Science and Climate Change in an Alternative Facts World Host: University of Aberdeen Location: Zoology Lecture Hall, Zoology Building. Time: 10am-12pm

During British Science Week and Climate Week, it is an appropriate time to examine the role of science, and our understanding of climate change, in a world where alternative facts are seen by some to have the same currency as real facts. There will be a panel including: Prof Piers Forster, University of Leeds; Prof Terry Dawson, Kings College London; Dr Jo House, University of Bristol; Prof Pete Smith, University of Aberdeen; Cllr Dr Martin Ford, Aberdeenshire Councillor, among others.

British Science Week Discovery Day

Host: Aberdeen Science Centre Location: Aberdeen Science Centre, 179 Constitution Street, Aberdeen Time: 10am-4pm Join us from 10am-4pm on the 18 March for a day of spectacular discovery! With researchers from the University of Aberdeen, RGU and more, and visitors from Techfest and beyond this day is sure to be packed full of family friendly fun, activities, and shows! SUnday 19th MArch Udny-Pitmedden Cycle with the Aberdeenshire Rangers Host: Aberdeenshire Council Location: Udny Green, Ellon Time: 10:30am - 12:30pm

A bike ride through little used country lanes, beautiful views and up moderately bracing hills (but every hill has its down-side!) 11 miles, an easy ride along mostly level ground. Host: Creative Carbon Scotland Location: The Lemon Tree Time: 6pm How can cultural practices address a post-fossil future? Join Nuno Sacramento (Director, Peacock Visual Arts) and Dr Leslie Mabon (Sociologist, Robert Gordon University) during Aberdeen Climate Week for a special conversation addressing the intersections between culture and sustainability in Aberdeen.

The Impact of Climate Change on Wildlife

TUEsDAy 21st MArch Movie Screening - “Demain”

Host: RGU GoGreen Location: Robert Gordon University, Sir Ian Wood Building, N118 Time: 6pm Join us for a free screening of the widely acclaimed “Demain” - Faced with a future that scientists say is a great cause for concern, the film has the distinction of not giving in to catastrophism. It celebrates local activism and community projects providing inspiration and motivation for change.

Wednesday 22nd MArch ‘Green’ Story Telling & Games

Host: Aberdeen Climate Action Location: Cults Library Time: 4-4:30pm

Description: Join Alison Stuart, ACA and the Cults Librarians for a climate change themed storytelling and games session. Suitable for those between 4-7yrs old.

Local Inspiration: You can do it!

Host: Aberdeen Climate Action Location: Aberdeen Central Library, Adult Lending, Mezzanine Floor Time: 6:30pm Join us for a panel of speakers with different backgrounds, but very similar goals to reduce carbon and give back to the environment. Gain inspiration from hearing about their local community projects and learn about other community projects in the accompanying exhibition. Alone or in concert there is so much we can do to mitigate Climate Change and help our planet.

Thursday 23RD MArch Donside Hydro Guided Walk

Host: ACEnergy, RSPB, Aberdeen Rangers Service Location: Donmouth, by the bird hide on the esplanade. Time: 2pm Ranger Simon Whitworth will be leading this walk along the river Don, pointing out wildlife on route to the Donside Hydro project. Jane Fullerton, ACEnergy, will then give a guided tour around the Hydro. The Donside Hydro harnesses energy from its neighbouring river – The Don – to create electricity which is then sold to the national grid. Income generated from the project will be channelled into initiatives that achieve social and environmental benefits for the local regeneration area.

Movie Screening - “Just Do It”

Host: Aberdeen Climate Action Location: Montgomery Development and Education Centre (MDEC) 79 Queen St, Aberdeen AB10 1AN Time: 7pm This film gives a true and humorous inside look at activism, with its beauty, planning, energy and ingrained moral drivers. Never again will you take the media’s depiction of these protectors at face value! (Documentary)

How Does Food Shape Our Urban Lives?

Host: RGU Go Green Location: Meet @ Front Entrance of Sir Ian Wood Building. Time: 5:30pm Carolyn Steel is an architect, writer and famed TED Global speaker. She regularly hosts a series of lectures on “Food and the City”. Everyone is welcome to this one-of-a-kind talk on food security and the history of farming.

FRIday 24Th MArch Go Green’s Zero Waste Cafe Host: RGU Go Green Location: Ruthrieston Community Centre Time: 6pm-8pm

This popular zero-waste café has been running for over half a year now. This night will be the culmination and a celebration of all of Go Green’s activities with a free delicious meal, good live music and an interesting exhibition. Everybody is welcome to come celebrate with us – on the house!

Movie Screening - “Merchants of Doubt”

Host: Aberdeen Climate Action Location: Vue Aberdeen, Lighthouse Cinema, 10 Ship Row, AB11 5BW Time: 7pm Cost: £9.29 Join us for a screening of the popular “Merchants of Doubt”, a gripping expose of how a small group of people and companies manage to misinform governments and millions of people, in so doing cause destruction and death, yet use the same techniques time and again, for Tobacco, Climate Change, Flame Retardants, GMO’s, E.M. radiation, etc. If everyone saw this film the world would be a much better place: few events are as revealing and informative as this film. Saturday 25Th MArch Slient Squirrel Spotting Safari Host: Aberdeen Countryside Rangers Location: Hazlehead Park Time: 7am-9am

Join the Countryside Rangers on an early morning journey jaunt to find signs of the woods’ red squirrel population. Perhaps you’ll be lucky enough to see one of the squirrels! These woods are being managed to make them more climate change resistant and better for biodiversity. Please wear sturdy footwear and clothing suitable for the weather, and bring a hot drink if you wish. Meet at the far end of the West Chapel Hazlehead Crematorium car park. Booking essential. Managing Woods for Climate Change Host: Aberdeen Ranger Service Location: Hazlehead Park Time: 10am-12pm

Following on from the early morning squirrel spotting safari this event will look in more detail at how woodlands are managed for timber production, biodiversity, public access and to make them resistant to climate change. Maud-Auchnagatt Cycle with the Aberdeenshire Rangers Host: Aberdeenshire Council Location: Aden Country Park Time: 10am-1pm

Enjoy a circular cycle ride from Aden Country Park to Auchnagatt, returning via the Formartine & Buchan Way. 15 miles, moderate to easy with only a couple of short hills. Bennachie Cycle with the Aberdeenshire Rangers

Host: Aberdeeshire Council Location: Bennachie Visitors Centre Car Park Time: 10am-1pm An opportunity to discover parts of Bennachie by bike on a 3.7 mile cycle on a route consisting of a mixture of paths and forestry tracks that incorporates gradual inclines and descents. Bikes must be suitable for forestry tracks. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. Booking is essential.

Outreach and Earthlings

Host: Vegan Outreach Scotland Location: St Nicholas Street Plaza Time: 11am-5pm Vegan Outreach Scotland and Aberdeen Earthlings Experience are joining forces to host an Outreach and Earthlings event! There will be an outreach/information stand with vegan food samples, leaflets, and other giveaways. We will be leafleting and talking to the public, or for those who prefer a less interactive role you can don a mask and participate in the Earthlings demo showing recent undercover footage from British slaughterhouses and farms.

The Challenges of Diversification from Oil, Arms & Nuclear Weapons to Alternative Energy Host: Aberdeen Climate Action and the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament Location: University of Aberdeen, New Kings 10 Time: 2.30pm-4.30pm

The Lucas Plan (1978) Documentary (35ms) will be shown followed by panel discussion on how a change in industry can occur, towards alternative energies and disarmament, with the drive coming from the workers. The Speakers are Jelte Harnmeijer, Hutton Institute, expert on community renewable energy; Erik Dalhuisjen, ACA; Veronika Tudhope, Scottish CND and Myshele Haywood, Green Party.

EARTH HOUR Walk

All electrical devices, including torches are banned – can you handle it? Join the Aberdeenshire Rangers for an hour of down-to-earth, back-to-nature living. Bring food and drink to share or just eat it all yourself! Free event but booking is essential. Meeting point: At the southern entrance to Delgaty Woods, near the Mill of Delgaty; OS Landranger Map 29 grid ref. NJ 758 496. Postcode: AB53 8HL –sat-nav users, head east from this point a couple of hundred yards to the entrance to Delgaty Woods. This is NOT the main Castle car park or the one further up the hill from the main Castle entrance.
