Lumen Fidei The Light of Faith By Pope Francis Foreword by Scott Hahn
“The encyclical letter Lumen Fidei is the great monument of the Year of Faith declared by Pope Benedict XVI and brought to completion by Pope Francis. It is a capstone of the year, but at the same time a milestone of a long road, a road we have only begun to travel: the road of the New Evangelization.” —from the Foreword by Scott Hahn On June 29, 2013 Pope Francis issued his first papal letter reflecting on the nature of belief and the need to renew our faith for a bright future of charity and love for all.

“The light of Faith: this is how the Church’s tradition speaks of the great gift brought by Jesus,” Pope Francis writes. “In John’s Gospel, Christ says of himself: ‘I have come as light into the world, that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.’” Here is an illuminating work inviting all to lead a more spiritual and faith-based life, a reminder that with faith comes service, and with service to others and to God comes heaven on earth.

Excerpt from Lumen Fidei 1. The light of Faith: this is how the Church’s tradition speaks of the great gift brought by Jesus. In John’s Gospel, Christ says of himself: “I have come as light into the world, that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness” (Jn 12:46). Saint Paul uses the same image: “God who said ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ has shone in our hearts” (2 Cor 4:6). The pagan world, which hungered for light, had seen the growth of the cult of the sun god, Sol Invictus, invoked each day at sunrise. Yet though the sun was born anew each morning, it was clearly incapable of casting its light on all of human existence. The sun does not illumine all reality; its rays cannot penetrate to the shadow of death, the place where men’s eyes are closed to its light. “No one —Saint Justin Martyr writes—has ever been ready to die for his faith in the sun.”1 Conscious of the immense horizon which their faith opened before them, Christians invoked Jesus as the true sun “whose rays bestow life.”2 To Martha, weeping for the death of her brother Lazarus, Jesus said: “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” (Jn 11:40). Those who believe, see; they see with a light that illumines their entire journey, for it comes from the risen Christ, the morning star which never sets. 1 Dialogus cum Tryphone Iudaeo, 121, 2: PG 6, 758. 2 Clementof Alexandria, Protrepticus, IX: PG 8, 195.

On Heaven and Earth
Pope Francis on Faith, Family, and the Church in the Twenty-First Century By Jorge Mario Bergoglio and Abraham Skorka For years Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Archbishop of Argentina, and Rabbi Abraham Skorka were tenacious promoters of interreligious dialogues on faith and reason. They both sought to build bridges among Catholicism, Judaism, and the world at large. On Heaven and Earth, originally published in Argentina in 2010, brings together a series of these conversations where both men talked about various theological and worldly issues, including God, fundamentalism, atheism, abortion, homosexuality, euthanasia, same-sex marriage, and globalization.

“Whether or not they agree with everything that is said, readers of all religious backgrounds will be impressed by the substance and frankness of these conversations between Cardinal Bergoglio and Rabbi Skorka. They clearly enact the call of the Second Vatican Council for ‘fraternal dialogues’ between Catholics and Jews. This is how religious leaders should speak to one another: on the basis of sincere friendship and respect. This book will also encourage anyone who wondered if a pope from a non-European country could be personally committed to the Catholic Church’s new relationship with Jews.” —Philip A. Cunningham, Ph.D., Professor of Theology and Director of the Institute for Jewish-Catholic Relations, Saint Joseph’s University, Philadelphia

Excerpt from On Heaven and Earth 1. ON GOD SKORKA: It has been many years since we first met and a brotherly bond has been forged between us. While studying the books of the Talmud, I found one that says that friendship means sharing meals and spending time together, but in the end it points out that the sign of a real friendship is the ability to reveal what is in one’s heart to the other person. That is what happened over time with the two of us. I believe that undoubtedly the most important thing that brought us together was, and still is, G-d, who caused our paths to cross and allowed us to open our hearts to each other. Although we broached many topics during our regular conversations, we never spoke explicitly about G-d. Of course, it was always understood that He was present. It would be good to start this exchange, which we plan to leave as a testimony of our dialogue, by discussing Him who is so important in our lives. BERGOGLIO: What a great word: path! In my personal experience with God I cannot do without the path. I would say that one encounters God walking, moving, seeking Him and allowing oneself to be sought by Him. They are two paths that meet. On one hand, there is our path that seeks Him, driven by that instinct that flows from the heart; and after, when we have encountered each other, we realize that He was the one who had been searching for us from the start. The initial religious experience is that of walking: walk to the land that I am going to give you. It is a promise that God makes to Abraham. In that promise, in this, in this walking, an alliance is established that consolidates over time. Because of this I say that my experience with God takes place along the path, both in the search and in allowing myself to be sought, even if it may be by diverse paths—of pain, of joy, of light, or of darkness.

Excerpt from Pray for Me Chapter 1: The Head and the Heart “Pray for me.” —Pope Francis, March 13, 2013, from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica immediately after his election The initial silence of the new pope struck all who saw him. And during those moments, as Pope Francis stood there smiling, seeming almost awkward, the world formed its first, and inevitably lasting, impression of the new bishop of Rome. It was a good impression. In his silence, Francis seemed to express a modesty, a humility, that the crowd below appreciated. Still, they desired to know him better, to understand who he was and what he intended to do. But, for a moment, that desire was frustrated by the new pope’s evident desire to remain “hidden” for just a little while longer, though the cameras of the world were trained upon him. And in that tension between words and silence, between a desire to know and a wish to remain hidden, a bond was formed between Francis and the people of St. Peter’s Square. How such things happen is not easy to explain. But before he said anything at all, the people had already begun to understand him, and to appreciate him. In his silence, in his modesty, in what appeared to be even a certain clumsiness, he was revealing, it seemed, his humanity, his sensitivity, and so spontaneous cries sprang up: “Viva il Papa!” “Long live the pope!” A connection was formed. A type of communion. And we sensed that hidden from our sight were great depths of emotion, and great depths of thought, which were the source of a simplicity that drew us already into a relationship with him. Francis was not polished. He was not rehearsed. He was simply himself. A man dressed in white, standing in silence. He had emerged as the leader of the Catholic Church at a very delicate moment. The previous pope, Benedict XVI, had stepped down from his post just two weeks before, flying in a helicopter from the Vatican to Castel Gandolfo, fifteen miles outside of Rome, in an unprecedented decision that had left many in the Church confused and uncertain. A Message from the Author Young people are terrific idealists, and in the 21st century they’ve become key protagonists for social change. The initial uprisings that produced the Arab Spring, massive street protests in Brazil and Turkey, and global ferment over the environment and climate change are all examples of movements led by young activists. In a nutshell, the core reason young people ought to be concerned with the global war on Christians is because it isn’t just a religious or confessional issue, but rather the premier human rights struggle of our time. Let’s start with two sets of facts—not hunches or theories, but empirical realities. First, most Christians today live in the developing world. Twothirds of the world’s 2.3 billion Christians today are found in Africa, Latin America, Asia, the Pacific islands and the Middle East. They’re overwhelmingly non-white and poor, and they are also disproportionately women. Often they’re drawn from the poorest and most marginalized strata of their societies, as in India, where roughly 70 percent of the Christian minority comes from the Dalit and tribal underclass. Second, those Christians are in the firing line. According to the International Society for Human Rights, 80 percent of all acts of religious discrimination in the world now are directed at Christians. The Center for the Study of Global Christianity estimates that 100,000 Christians have died for religious reasons each year over the last decade, which translates into 11 victims every hour for the past ten years. What’s happening in Syria and Egypt right now (Fall 2013), with rapidly spreading assaults on their Christian minorities, illustrates these trends. Put those two sets of facts together and here’s what you get: A society’s treatment of Christians is a harbinger for its broader human rights record—for its treatment of ethnic and religious minorities, its record on women, and its concern for the poor and the forgotten. Just as you didn’t have to be Jewish to be concerned with dissident Soviet Jews in the 1960s and 70s, and you didn’t have to be black to be outraged by Apartheid in South Africa in the 1980s, you don’t have to be Christian today to see the global war on Christians as a towering moral concern. It’s a transcendent cause, not a wedge issue. That, in a nutshell, is why young people dreaming of a better world ought to pay attention. John L. Allen, Jr.

AN ANXIOUS AGE
The Post-Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of America By Joseph Bottum In Joseph Bottum’s new book, An Anxious Age, he asserts that American culture is being driven by spiritual anxiety. Undoubtedly, individuals from all walks of life, no matter if they are liberal or conservative, radical or traditionalist, frantically seek confirmation of their own essential goodness. We are a nation desperate to stand on the side of morality—to know that we are righteous and dwell in the light.

Insightful and contrarian, Bottum offers an account of modern America, presented as a morality tale formed by a collision of spiritual disturbances. The cause, he claims, is the most significant and least noticed historical fact of the last fifty years: that mainline Protestant churches, once the source of social consensus and cultural unity, have collapsed. Our spiritual angst, broken loose from the churches that once contained them, now maddens everything in American life. Updating both The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism (Max Weber’s sociological classic), An Anxious Age undertakes two case studies of contemporary social classes adrift without the religious understandings that gave their ancestors meaning. Examining the college-educated elite, Bottum sees the heirs of the old, dominant mainline Protestant culture: dutiful, post-Protestant descendants who claim the high social position of their Christian ancestors even while they reject their ancestors’ faith. Turning to the Swallows of Capistrano, the Catholics formed by the pontificate of John Paul II, Bottum evaluates the early victories— and later defeats—of the attempt to substitute Catholicism for the dying mainline voice in public life.
About the Author: Joseph Bottum JOSEPH BOTTUM is one of the nation’s most widely published and influential essayists—and author of The Christmas Plains, classic reflections on the meaning of Christmas and the American prairie. A bestselling writer of Kindle ebooks, with work in journals from the Atlantic to the Wall Street Journal and Washington Post, Bottum is the former literary editor of the Weekly Standard and editor-in-chief of First Things. He holds a Ph.D. in medieval philosophy and has done television commentary for programs from NBC’s Meet the Press to the PBS Evening News. Bottum lives with his family far off in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

A Message from the Author An Anxious Age has a very simple story to tell about modern America. Our wild politics, our cultural divisions, the sexual revolution, the agitation about everything, the lack of agreement, the failure of manners—these are not causes of all that has happened in recent years. They are instead effects, produced by the failure of one of the old centers of American society. The most significant, and least noticed, historical event over the last fifty years has been the collapse of the Mainline Protestant churches that, once upon a time, almost single-handedly defined the core of our culture. The collapse of these churches set free the strange metaphysical concepts that run through our political and social interactions. Think of our willingness to believe that our political opponents are not just wrong but actually evil. Think of the ways we talk about food, weight, and cigarettes, the way we use such concepts as gender, race, and the environment. These are not political contests or social ideas. They have become concepts deeply tinged with morality, as the place where worry about goodness and salvation has moved, once they left the churches. Perhaps the key explanation in An Anxious Age is the account of the Poster Children—the college-educated, post-Protestant class often called “the elite.” They may have dropped their grandparents’ religion, but they kept many of the other social class signs of the old upper-middle class. In both the noble range and the annoying self-righteousness of their moral concerns, they actually are their grandparents, repackaged for the new anxieties of a new era. An Anxious Age may be the most provocative study of America in a decade—an explanation of where we are, and how we got here. Joseph Bottum

RENDER UNTO CAESAR
Serving the Nation by Living Our Catholic Beliefs in Political Life By Charles J. Chaput People who take God seriously will not remain silent about their faith. They will often disagree about doctrine or policy, but they won’t be quiet. They can’t be. They’ll act on what they believe, sometimes at the cost of their reputations and careers. Obviously the common good demands a respect for other people with different beliefs and a willingness to compromise whenever possible. But for Catholics, the common good can never mean muting themselves in public debate on foundational issues of human dignity. Christian faith is always personal but never private. This is why any notion of tolerance that tries to reduce faith to private idiosyncrasy, or a set of opinions that we can indulge at home but need to be quiet about in public, will always fail. ADOPTION NOTES Themes: Doctrine & Theology; Religion and Politics Alternative Formats:
Few topics in recent years have ignited as much public debate as the balance between religion and politics. While American society has ample room for believers and nonbelievers alike, Chaput argues, our public life must be considered within the context of its Christian roots. American democracy does not ask its citizens to put aside their deeply held moral and religious beliefs for the sake of public policy. In fact, it requires exactly the opposite. “This isn’t just a book for Catholics; it’s for anyone who cares about the state of America’s soul.” —John L. Allen Jr., Boston Globe Columnist and CNN Senior Vatican correspondent
About the Author: Charles J. Chaput CHARLES J. CHAPUT, O.F.M. Cap., is Archbishop of Philadelphia. Raised in a Native American and French-Canadian household in a small town on the plains of Kansas, he has moved beyond his humble origins to become one of the American Catholic hierarchy’s most visible and outspoken leaders. Archbishop Chaput consistently involves himself in the great moral debates of the nation, from abortion to the war in Iraq. Archbishop Chaput belongs to the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom. He is the author of Render Unto Caesar and A Heart on Fire.

Excerpt from Render Unto Caesar Catholics strongly support a proper and healthy separation of the civil and religious dimensions in our national life. History is a great teacher, and one of its lessons is that when religion and the state mingle too intimately, bad things can happen to both. But of course, everything depends on what people mean by a proper and healthy separation. Some persons do sincerely and deeply worry about religion hijacking public life. I respect their views. I also find their worries excessive. I agree that religious people who act or speak rashly can cause such fears. But too often, I find that both of these slogans— “don’t impose your beliefs on society” and “the separation of church and state”—have little to do with fact. The truth is, no one in mainstream American politics wants a theocracy. No one in mainstream public life wants to force uniquely Catholic doctrines into federal law. So we need to see these slogans for what they frequently are: foolish and sometimes dishonest arguments that confuse our national memory and identity. The “God question” is part of our public life, and we simply can’t avoid it. Does God exist or not? Each citizen answers that in his or her own way. But the issue is not theoretical. It goes to first premises. It has very practical implications, just as it did at our country’s founding. If we really believe God exists, that belief will inevitably color our personal and public behavior: our actions, our choices, and our decisions. It will also subtly frame our civic language and institutions. If we really believe God exists, excluding God from our public life—whether we do it explicitly through Supreme Court action or implicitly by our silence as citizens—cannot serve the common good because it amounts to enshrining the unreal in the place of the real. “Joan Chittister is a legend. In this book she reminds us that when we connect our passions to the world’s pain, everybody wins. Joan’s book is a wonderful corrective to the piles of narcissistic, fluffy “find yourself” books and self-help theology which often miss the secret to fulfillment which is—if we want to find our lives, we’ve got to give them away . . . we are made to live for something bigger than ourselves. Joan nails it. She invites you to cling to Jesus, dive into the world’s pain, and do something daring and beautiful with your life.” —Shane Claiborne, cofounder of The Simple Way and author of Common Prayer

A Message from the Author Decision making is a regular part of life. Circumstances come and go, tossing us between one possibility and another. But some decisions, made at major change points in life, are more impacting, more determinative than others. Following the Path deals with the three most important decision points in life: at the beginning of a new phase of life or interest; in mid stream when the pressure for change rises again; at that period in life when long-time careers or personal interests and commitments simply fade away leaving people with a good number of years ahead of them but with little or no sense of overarching purpose or direction in life. In each period we find ourselves at the mercy of too much conflicting advice or too much internal confusion, fear, or lack of confidence. This book is a guide through a sea of possible reasons to choose one thing rather than another and the impact of those choices on a person’s sense of self, of joy and of lasting happiness. Each of the phases of life and reasons for change may appear at any time in life but all of them will surely arise before all the major life choices are finally met and made. This book is meant for psychologists, counselors, teachers, guidance personnel, life coaches, directors, parents, and of course, for those in the throes of multiple options and little certainty about the next best step in life. It is particularly effective in group discussion and interpersonal dialogues intended to enable the client or student to examine the effects of one choice on another in the achievement of long-term happiness. Most of all, used well, this book will become a template of the decision-making process, however minor the choice may at the moment seem to be. Sister Joan Chittister

Bestselling author Scott Hahn, a convert to Catholicism, has experienced the doubts that so often drive discussions about God and the Church. In the years before his conversion, he was first a nonbeliever and then an antiCatholic clergyman. In Reasons to Believe, he explains the “how and why” of the Catholic faith—drawing from Scripture, his own struggles and those of other converts, as well as from everyday life and even natural science. Hahn shows that reason and revelation, nature and the supernatural are not opposed to one another; rather, they offer complementary evidence that God exists. Hahn also leads readers to see that God created the universe with a purpose—found in both the Book of Genesis and in the natural world. “A flagship volume for contemporary apologetics. This book should be required reading for every Catholic college student and especially for every priest, seminarian, and deacon. This is apologetics made fascinating.” —Fr. Benedict J. Groeschel, CFR “A cohesive vision of God’s kingdom that enables people more fully to understand, live, and defend the truth of the Catholic Church. . . . This is a book many have been waiting for.” —Jeff Cavins, author of My Life on the Rock “Hahn does more than respond to our doubts. He shows us a God who has a plan for history and for each of our lives.” —David Scott, author of The Catholic Passion
About the Author: Scott Hahn DR. SCOTT W. HAHN, holds the Fr. Michael Scanlan Chair of Biblical Theology and the New Evangelization at Franciscan University of Steubenville, where he has taught since 1990, and is the Founder and President of the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology. In 2005, he was appointed as the Pope Benedict XVI Chair of Biblical Theology and Liturgical Proclamation at St. Vincent Seminary in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. Dr. Hahn is also the bestselling author of numerous books including The Lamb’s Supper, Reasons to Believe, and Rome Sweet Home (co-authored with his wife, Kimberly) and is editor of the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible and Letter & Spirit: A Catholic Journal of Biblical Theology. A Message from The St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology Scott Hahn spent his young years in active intellectual resistance to the Catholic faith. First a nonbeliever, he was “born again” as a teenager and took up a strain of evangelicalism that considered the pope to be the antichrist. He was ordained to the ministry and took to preaching and teaching. His conversion to Catholicism in 1986 arrived as a shock to many people. He has written many books since then. This book, Reasons to Believe, can be compared to Thomas Aquinas’s Summa Contra Gentiles. It is a serene, yet passionate, exploration of all the major objections to the claims of the Catholic Church. Hahn first takes up the case against theism brought by atheists. He proceeds to arguments against Christianity brought by nonbelievers. He then takes up the defense of Catholicism against the arguments of the Protestant Reformers and their successors. The final portion of the book is a fresh, positive presentation of the Catholic Church as the fulfillment of the biblical promise of God’s kingdom. Hahn’s approach is distinctive. He presents his case compactly and economically, yet thoroughly. He has an unerring sense of how much argument a reader is willing and able to engage. What keeps the reader moving through this book is the personal dimension, which is always present. Each of the issues confronted—from God’s existence to the possibility of moral truth—represents something Hahn had to confront for himself, from outside the faith. The author’s experiences put flesh on the bones of his theological case. Along the way, he shows that science and religion, reason and revelation, nature and the supernatural, are not opposed—as many secularist commentators say—but rather complementary. Reasons to Believe makes a winning defense of the Church and the Creed—but never seems defensive. Hahn assumes the good will of his opponents and takes their arguments seriously, because they were once his own. In response, he makes an intelligent, winsome, positive, holistic, and eminently readable case for Catholic faith. The Second Vatican Council brought new life into the practice of Catholicism by encouraging engagement with the modern world and a refocusing of traditional teaching. The council’s impact on the Church is still playing out today, and with many current church issues finding their roots in differing interpretations of Vatican II, it has never lost relevance. Vatican II: The Essential Texts brings together the key documents of the council. These source materials will help students understand first-hand the Church’s developing positions on its relationship with the secular world and other religions, the role of lay people, human rights and the common good, the liturgy and other still highly relevant issues. In addition to the introductions from Pope Benedict and James Carroll, the documents are also accompanied by brief historical prefaces from Professor Edward Hahnenberg. “Currently the only popular edition of these critical documents, this volume will be a valuable resource for those who want to reexamine the teaching of Vatican II 50 years on and judge for themselves whether they are conservative or liberal documents.” —Library Journal
About the Editors: JAMES CARROLL is the National Book Award-winning author of Practicing Catholic and An American Requiem. He writes widely on Catholic issues and is passionate about the legacy of Vatican II. EDWARD HAHNENBERG is professor of theology at Xavier University and the author of A Concise Guide to the Documents of Vatican II. NORMAN TANNER, SJ, is professor of church history at the Gregorian University in Rome.

Excerpt from Vatican II Sacrosanctum Concilium When the Second Vatican Council began in October of 1962, the very first text discussed was the document on the liturgy. This turned out to be a fortunate choice. Of the nearly 70 different documents drafted in preparation for the council, the document on the liturgy was the simplest and the strongest. More than any of the others, it reflected the theological and pastoral renewal that prepared the way for Vatican II. Prior to the council, most Catholics experienced the Mass as a ritual that was both mysterious and mechanical. Prayers were in Latin. And for much of the service, the priest had his back to the congregation. Separated from the sanctuary by a communion rail and removed from the sacred action taking place at the altar, the laity “attended” Mass but did not actively participate in it. Pre-conciliar Catholicism was marked by a rich devotional life—Rosary groups and First Fridays, benedictions and novenas, a host of prayers and practices that fed the spiritual life of ordinary Catholics. But at Mass the laity were largely passive, watching a ritual done for them but not by them. And yet, at the same time, a liturgical renewal was already underway. It began in the monasteries of Europe and slowly spread to parishes. In 1833, the Benedictine monk Prosper Guéranger refounded the monastery of Solesmes in France. His goal was to offer an alternative to the encroaching evils of “the modern world” by modeling a true Christian community centered around the liturgy. The movement was at first fueled by a romanticism for all things medieval (thus the recovery of gothic architecture and Gregorian chant). Historical research soon pushed back further to the patristic era of the fourth and fifth centuries, which became for scholars the Golden Age of liturgical life. Thus from the start, the liturgical renewal was cast in terms of return—a “return to the sources” (ressourcement) whose purpose was to bring into the present the richer traditions of the past. Teresa’s Masterpiece of Mystical Literature in its Most Celebrated English Translation By Teresa of Ávila
Image | TR | 978-0-385-03643-6 | 272pp. $15.00/$18.00 Can. | Exam Copy: $3.00
Translated and Edited by E. Allison Peers A celebrated book on mystical theology, Interior Castle describes the seven stages of union with God. Using everyday language to explain difficult theological concepts, Teresa of Ávila compares the contemplative life to a castle with seven chambers. Tracing the passage of the soul through each successive chamber, she draws a powerful picture of the path toward spiritual perfection. As timely today as when St. Teresa of Ávila wrote it centuries ago, this work continues to offer profound and inspiring reflections on such subjects as self-knowledge, humility, detachment, and suffering. The Way of a Pilgrim
And The Pilgrim Continues His Way Translated by Helen Bacovcin Foreword by Walter J. Ciszek, S.J. This classic of world spiritual literature is the firsthand account of a pilgrim’s journey as he endeavors to live out Saint Paul’s instruction to “pray without ceasing.” The narrator, an unnamed nineteenth-century peasant, sets out on his pilgrimage with nothing but a Bible, a rosary, and some dried bread. As he walks, he recites the Jesus prayer (“Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me”)—a prayer that is said to quiet anxiety and fill the heart with love for all creation. With this prayer constantly on his lips, the pilgrim undergoes a profound spiritual education. This edition includes the sequel to The Way of a Pilgrim, entitled A Pilgrim Continues His Way, which contains a lengthy appendix reviewing the teachings of the Holy Fathers on the Jesus prayer. SAINT FRANCIS OF ASSISI
By G.K. Chesterton
Introduction by Joseph F. Girzone Francis of Assisi is, after Mary of Nazareth, the greatest saint in the Christian calendar, and one of the most influential men in the whole of human history. By universal acclaim, this biography by G. K. Chesterton is considered the best appreciation of Francis’s life—the one that gets to the heart of the matter. Chesterton gives us Francis in his world—the riotously colorful world of the High Middle Ages, a world with more pageantry and romance than we have seen before or since. Here is the Francis who tried to end the Crusades by talking to the Saracens, and who interceded with the emperor on behalf of the birds. Here is the Francis who inspired a revolution in art that began with Giotto and a revolution in poetry that began with Dante. The Francis who prayed and danced with pagan abandon, who talked to animals, who invented the crèche and whose life and legacy inspired Jorge Mario Bergoglio to become the very first Pope Francis.

G.K. Chesterton’s sketch of the life and thought of philosopher and theologian Thomas Aquinas is as relevant today as when it was published in 1933. Then it earned the praise of such distinguished writers as Etienne Gilson, Jacques Maritain, and Anton Pegis as the best book ever written on the great thirteenth-century Italian Dominican friar and priest. Today Chesterton’s classic stands poised to reveal Thomas to a new generation. Themes: Christian Saints; Doctrinal; Philosophy

Models of the Church
By Avery Cardinal Dulles
There is a dramatic reexamination of structure, authority, dogma—every aspect of the life of the Church is held up to scrutiny. Welcoming this as a sign of vitality, Avery Dulles has carefully studied the writings of contemporary Protestant and Catholic ecclesiologists and sifted out six major approaches, or “models,” through which the Church’s character can be understood: as Institution, Mystical Communion, Sacrament, Herald, Servant, and, in a recent addition to the book, as Community of Disciples. A balanced theology, he concludes, must incorporate the major affirmations of each. “The method of models or types,” observes Cardinal Dulles, “can have great value in helping people to get beyond the limitations of their own particular outlook and to enter into fruitful conversation with other. . . . Translated by John Beevers Few spiritual figures have touched as many readers in the past century as Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, the saint popularly known as the Little Flower. Though she was only twenty-four years old when she died, her writings have had tremendous impact, making her one of the most popular spiritual writers in the twentieth century. Her autobiography, The Story of a Soul, has been a source of priceless inspiration ever since it was written, and has become a great spiritual bestseller of our time. Yet it is not a conventional work of religious devotion; instead, it is in many ways a supernatural book. In the words of Pope Pius XI, Saint Thérèse “attained the knowledge of supernatural things in such abundant measure that she was able to point out the sure way of salvation to others.” Themes: Christian Saints; Spiritual Guidance
Life and Holiness
By Thomas Merton
Life and Holiness is Thomas Merton’s classic text on incorporating spirituality into everyday life. Merton lived a secular life until he became a Trappist monk in his late twenties, but even in the monastery he was deeply engaged in the questions of his day. In this succinct and readily accessible work, he offers compelling thoughts on what it means to be holy in the face of the anxieties of the modern age. Merton (1915–1968) was arguably the most influential American Catholic author of the twentieth century. Themes: Spiritual Guidance /Discipline; Spiritual Life

The Catechism of the Catholic Church is a complete summary of what Catholics throughout the world believe in common. This book is the catechism (the word means “instruction”) that will serve as the standard for all future catechisms. The Catechism draws on the Bible, the Mass, the Sacraments, Church tradition and teaching, and the lives of saints. It comes with a complete index, footnotes and cross-references for a fuller understanding of every subject. Using the tradition of explaining what the Church believes (the Creed), what she celebrates (the Sacraments), what she lives (the Commandments), and what she prays (the Lord’s Prayer), the Catechism of the Catholic Church offers challenges for believers and answers for all those interested in learning about the mystery of the Catholic faith. Here is a positive, coherent and contemporary map for our spiritual journey toward transformation. “A sure and certain standard for the teaching of the faith.” —Pope John Paul II

THE CONFESSIONS OF SAINT AUGUSTINE
By Saint Augustine
Translated with an Introduction and Notes by John K. Ryan Heartfelt, incisive, and timeless, The Confessions of Saint Augustine has captivated readers for more than fifteen hundred years. Retelling the story of his long struggle with faith and ultimate conversion—the first such spiritual memoir ever recorded—Saint Augustine traces a story of sin, regret, and redemption that is both deeply personal and, at the same time, universal. It starts with his early life, education, and youthful indiscretions, and follows his ascent to influence as a teacher of rhetoric. Philosophically and theologically brilliant, sincere in its feeling, and both grounded in history and strikingly contemporary in its resonance, The Confessions of Saint Augustine is a timeless classic for any religious classroom.
