Editor’s Note Dear Educator, It was yet another award-winning year for Random House, but this one was like no other: in addition to winning a number of school, library, and foundation awards, Random House, Inc. authors won an impressive four Pulitzer Prizes! One of the Pulitzer Prize winners, Tom Reiss (The Black Count, pg. 12), has contributed an original essay to this catalog that talks about his writing of the untold biography of Alexandre Dumas, the “real” Count of Monte Cristo— it’s quite fascinating! Other award highlights of the year include Carol Rifka Brunt’s Tell the Wolves I’m Home (pg. 24), which won the Alex Award. Brunt’s book is a coming-of-age novel set in 1980s New York City that tackles a sensitive social issue with great heart and compelling storytelling. And there’s Katherine Boo’s Behind the Beautiful Forevers (pg. 6), a powerful work of narrative nonfiction about a Mumbai slum, which won the National Book Award, among many other honors. Speaking of awards, Random House announced the recipients of its first annual Random House Teacher Awards for Literacy at a special event held during the 2012 NCTE meeting in Las Vegas. The winners are: • First Place ($10,000 Grant Recipient): Mary Andrews, Early Literacy Specialist, Estes Hill Elementary School (Chapel Hill, North Carolina) • Second Place ($5,000 Grant Recipient): Margo Nauert, Sixth Grade Teacher, Jay Stream Middle School (Carol Stream, Illinois) • Third Place ($2,500 Grant Recipient): Lisa Muller, English Teacher, Castle High School (Newburgh, Indiana)

High Quality Nonfiction for Teaching the Common Core State Standards

W

ith an increasing emphasis on narrative nonfiction to address the standards in teaching critical-thinking skills, many teachers are seeking out quality trade nonfiction for classroom use. For instance, journalist Katherine Boo’s National Book Award–winning Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity is an ideal text for teaching deeper research skills and a global perspective. Boo spent three years preparing to write the book, living among the residents of a Mumbai slum. The book not only profiles these residents, but it also sets their story within a larger global framework. Tracy Kidder, also an award-winning journalist, has penned several books that can help expand students’ horizons. Kidder followed Partners in Health founder Dr. Paul Farmer to Haiti, Peru, Cuba, and Russia, profiling his story in Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, a Man Who Would Cure the World, a book that has been on freshman reading lists at over 100 colleges. Strength in What Remains similarly profiles an extraordinary individual: Deo, who survived a civil war and genocide in his native Burundi and overcame new obstacles after arriving in America. Both profiles tell one man’s story within their larger socio-political and historical contexts. Teach European history? Have students create a time line of major world events upon a close reading of awardwinning Erik Larson’s In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler’s Berlin, a New York Times Notable Book which lends a stunning eyewitness perspective on a relatively unknown story during Hitler’s rise to power in 1933. Challenge students to debate moral and ethical issues by assigning Pulitzer Prize–winning author Sonia Nazario’s Enrique’s Journey: The Story of a Boy’s Dangerous Odyssey Mother which tells the true story of a to Reunite with His Mother, Honduran boy’s quest to find his mother in the United States and is certain to jump-start conversations about immigration. Ask students to examine the events happening in the communities around them by reading books with multicultural and coming-of-age themes, such as Wes Moore’s The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates, a memoir about growing up in the inner city and the choices we make that shape our identities, or Warren St. John’s Outcasts United: An American Town, a Refugee Team, and One Woman’s Quest to Make a Difference, a story about a refugee soccer team in Clarkston, Georgia, which became a resettlement area in the 1990s. Lastly, get all of your departments—Math, Social Studies, Language Arts, and Science—on board for a multidisciplinary reading of Rebecca

each long enough and you will hear it all, they say. And one thing you will quickly tire of hearing is the student complaint that they don’t like poetry because it’s too difficult. Of course, it’s easy to find plenty of poems to support their case. One reason poems can be difficult is that some poets design their poems that way. And there’s nothing we can do about that. But a more common reason is that poems are difficult because the reader has not read enough poems to know how a poem should be read. There are a number of things we can do about that. One of them is to teach poetry chronologically backwards. (Let’s face it, Beowulf is not a place to start.) Hook students on contemporary poems, especially ones that favor clear, direct language, then lead them gently into the works of earlier poets. Cure their poetry-phobia with new poems, then expose them to the voices of the past. Aimless Love is just one of many contemporary collections that would serve as a starting place for a student’s longer journey into the depth and historic breadth of poetry. But it’s my book, and why would I not take advantage of this opportunity to encourage teachers to delight their students first and instruct them later. This is one way to turn poetry from a school chore into a personal, and perhaps long-lasting, pleasure. And it’s based on a simple premise: the more poetry a student reads, the less “difficult” poetry will become. room Class r Poste ed in Includ of Back g Catalo

Shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize

In this brilliantly written, fast-paced book, based on three years of uncompromising reporting, a bewildering age of global change and inequality is made human. Annawadi is a makeshift settlement in the shadow of luxury hotels near the Mumbai airport, and as India starts to prosper, Annawadians are electric with hope. Abdul, a reflective and enterprising Muslim teenager, sees “a fortune beyond counting” in the recyclable garbage that richer people throw away. Asha, a woman of formidable wit and deep scars from a childhood in rural poverty, has identified an alternate route to the middle class: political corruption. With a little luck, her sensitive, beautiful daughter—Annawadi’s “most-everything girl”—will soon become its first female college graduate. And even the poorest Annawadians, like Kalu, a fifteen-year-old scrap-metal thief, believe themselves inching closer to the good lives and good times they call “the full enjoy.” But then Abdul the garbage sorter is falsely accused in a shocking tragedy; terror and a global recession rock the city; and suppressed tensions over religion, caste, sex, power, and economic envy turn brutal. As the tenderest individual hopes intersect with the greatest global truths, the true contours of a competitive age are revealed. And so, too, are the imaginations and courage of the people of Annawadi. With intelligence, humor, and deep insight into what connects human beings to one another in an era of tumultuous change, Behind the Beautiful Forevers carries the reader headlong into one of the twenty-first century’s hidden worlds, and into the lives of people impossible to forget.

“[An] exquisitely accomplished first book. Novelists dream of defining characters this swiftly and beautifully, but Ms. Boo is not a novelist. She is one of those rare, deep-digging journalists who can make truth surpass fiction, a documentarian with a superb sense of human drama. She makes it very easy to forget that this book is the work of a reporter. . . . Comparison to Dickens is not unwarranted.” —JANET M ASLIN, THE NEW YORK TIMES

“This book belongs on reading lists as a work that allows high schoolers to see the incredible hardships of life in a developing country.” —SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL

s jobs and capital whip around the planet, college students will graduate into a world where economic instability and social inequality are increasing and geographic boundaries matter less and less. Unfortunately, globalization and social inequality remain two of the most over-theorized, under-reported issues of our age. My book is an intimate investigative account of how this volatile new reality affects the young people of an Indian slum called Annawadi. Like young people elsewhere, the Annawadians are trying to figure out their place in a world where temp jobs are becoming the norm, adaptability is everything, and bewildering change is the one abiding constant. Behind the Beautiful Forevers took me three hard years to report, and one thought that sustained me was that I had a unique opportunity to show American readers that the distance between themselves and, say, a teenaged boy in Mumbai who finds an entrepreneurial niche in other people’s garbage, is not nearly as great as they might think. In the two decades I’ve spent writing about poverty and how people get out of it, I’ve come to believe, viscerally, that there are deep connections among individuals that transcend specificities of geography, culture, religion or class. The problem is that, in a time of high walls and security gates, it’s getting harder for people of means to grasp the struggles of less privileged people. Behind one such high wall, near the increasingly glamorous Mumbai airport, a sensitive girl is studying Othello in a makeshift hut by a vast sewage lake, and dreading an arranged marriage that might send her to a rural village. A convention-defying disabled woman is longing to be acknowledged as a valid human being. A smart teenaged boy named Mirchi is resisting the garbage-recycling work that is his family trade. Instead he dreams of being a waiter at a fancy hotel, sticking toothpicks into cubes of cheese. “Watch me,” he snaps at his mother one day. “I’ll have a bathroom as big as this hut!” Over the course of time, as Mirchi and the other residents of the slum apply their imaginations to overcoming corruption and injustice and making better lives for themselves, the broader contours of the market-global age are gradually revealed. Although I’m elated when readers join me in thinking about how to build a fairer world for people, I don’t consider didactic lectures an effective way to engage people—particularly young people—in questions about fairness and justice. Nor do I think young people want mawkishly sentimental or sensationalized nonfiction. Stereotypes put them off, and they know when they’re being manipulated. What they want, in my experience, is good, concrete information from which they can work out what they think for themselves. With a combination of extensive observation and documents-based reporting, I try to pull the reader in close to the lives and dilemmas of the poor, while unfolding a story that is powerful and honest enough to keep readers turning the pages. By the last page, I’d like to believe that some young readers will also find themselves wrestling with essential questions of our time: about how opportunity is distributed across the world; about what an individual should be willing to give up to get ahead; about the interconnections between, say, the collapse of investment banks in Manhattan and the price Mumbai waste-pickers receive for their empty plastic water bottles; about whether it is possible to be good and moral in a society that is not good and moral; and about the ultimate value of a human life.

Sampson Davis is best known as one of three friends from innercity Newark who made a pact in high school to become doctors. Their book The Pact and their work through the Three Doctors Foundation have inspired countless young men and women to strive for goals they otherwise would not have dreamed they could attain. In this book, Dr. Davis looks at the health care crisis in the inner city from a rare perspective: as a doctor who works on the front line of emergency medical care in the community where he grew up, and as a member of that community who has faced the same challenges as the people he treats every day. He also offers invaluable practical advice for those living in such communities, where conditions like asthma, heart disease, stroke, obesity, and AIDS are disproportionately endemic. Dr. Davis’s sister, a drug addict, died of AIDS; his brother is now paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair as a result of a bar fight; and he himself did time in juvenile detention—a wake-up call that changed his life. He recounts recognizing a young man who is brought to the E.R. with critical gunshot wounds as someone who was arrested with him when he was a teenager during a robbery gone bad; describes a patient whose case of sickle-cell anemia rouses an ethical dilemma; and explains the difficulty he has convincing his landlord and friend, an older woman, to go to the hospital for much-needed treatment. With empathy and hard-earned wisdom, Living and Dying in Brick City presents an urgent picture of medical care in our cities. It is an important resource guide for anyone at risk, anyone close to those at risk, and anyone who cares about the fate of our cities.

t was my fifth-grade teacher, Mrs. Speights, who made education fun, exciting, and, most importantly, helped me to feel that I was one of the smartest kids in her class. Maybe she inspired all the kids to feel the same way, but nonetheless it was her grace, witty remarks, and dynamic teaching style that managed to penetrate my young impressionable mind and divert me from the stark reality of poverty, crime, and drug infestation in my hometown of Newark, New Jersey, where the high school graduation rate falls well below 50 percent. Just like my mother, Mrs. Speights often echoed, “Education will save your life”—and it certainly did. To Mrs. Speights and all educators, I humbly thank you for being heroes to so many students, including a kid who once didn’t believe he could become a board-certified emergency medicine doctor, a philanthropist, and an author. My latest book, Living and Dying in Brick City: Stories from the Front Lines of an Inner-City E.R., is my way of giving back to the many educators who helped me escape the thought that education wasn’t for me and the belief that I wasn’t good enough. You have both championed and inspired me—and I thank you. My book encompasses the philosophy of reaching each student with a level of creativity and a touch of reality. It is part memoir, medical, self-help, and entertainment with solutions and strategies following each chapter. Brick City captures the imagination of students in any number of disciplines, including science, medicine, African American studies, sociology, history, philosophy, law, creative writing, sports, business, management, and politics. As a doctor who practices medicine in his hometown, I always look to share stories that tie into students’ lives and learning experiences, both in and out of the classroom, which will help them to navigate the world better prepared and equipped to understand and handle the multilayered complexities of life’s scenarios. Educators and readers alike tell me Brick City does just that, bringing together health, community, science, history, religion, business, friendship, family, hope, and ultimately humanity. My goal is to inspire each and every student to reach the highest level possible. I have talked about my life journey and books at hundreds of schools nationwide and have appeared as a guest on numerous television and radio programs. I understand the importance of being an engaging, motivational speaker, and students listen and are inspired because they know I have lived through the obstacles and challenges they are facing. They know that if I was able to overcome and overpower, then so can they. I look forward to visiting more schools and feel confident in saying, Living and Dying in Brick City: Stories from the Front Lines of an Inner-City E.R. delivers an incredible read for any common reading experience. As a misguided, often rebellious youth, I never imagined my life journey would lead me to becoming an author and, through writing this book, I am stepping outside of the hospital walls, still practicing medicine in the way of prevention and inspiration, and reaching thousands of students and educators. I can’t wait to see the effect Brick City has on students nationwide. I’m excited!

he debt we owe to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is one that will live forever. He told a country that had tried to settle its racial problems with a devastating civil war, with bombings and lynching, with bloody riots in the cities that there was another way. Where those who argued for violence and retribution had specific methods in mind to overcome injustice, Dr. King had a vision for all of America that the entire nation could embrace. Today, his message resonates with as much clarity as it did more than fifty years ago as we continue to grapple with issues of racism and prejudice, poverty and war. What Dr. King preached, what he taught, was nonviolence to a nation seemingly intoxicated with violence. He taught inclusion to a nation that had incorporated separatism in its laws. He believed that most people had a sense of fairness and wanted justice. He felt that if he could reach these people, bring them out of their roles as spectators and enlist them in what he saw as the American dream, he would be more effective. He saw himself as leading a parade of Americans with good hearts and fair minds. His faith in the power of young people also continued to grow. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., changed the world in which I lived. Today when I go to places like Little Rock, Montgomery, or New Orleans, I go without worrying about if I will be accepted or where I can sit. I see children getting on buses and running for the first seat they see. I believe that if Dr. King were alive today, he would enlist an army of young people to help each other and America in the education process. He would trust them to bring their energy and sense of justice to end gang violence and to reverse the feeling of helplessness that hurts so many of our young people. He would keep marching against unjust laws, racism, war, and poverty. Dr. King made America a better place for all people to live during the turbulent years of the civil rights struggle. Using his insights, his courage in tackling difficult problems, and his loyalty to nonviolence both in action and in the language we use with each other, perhaps we can continue building the America he once thought possible. General Alex Dumas is a man almost unknown today, yet his story is strikingly familiar—because his son, the novelist Alexandre Dumas, used his larger-than-life feats as inspiration for such classics as The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers. But hidden behind General Dumas’s swashbuckling adventures was an even more incredible secret: he was the son of a black slave—who rose higher in the white world than any man of his race would before our own time. Born in Saint-Domingue (now Haiti), Alex Dumas made his way to Paris where he rose to command armies at the height of the Revolution— until he met an implacable enemy he could not defeat. Time Magazine called The Black Count “one of those quintessentially human stories of strength and courage that sheds light on the historical moment that made it possible.” It is also a heartbreaking story of the enduring bonds of love between a father and son.

I

’ve always loved exploring history. It’s like an uncharted hemisphere, and when you look at it closely, it has a tendency to change everything about your own time. I’m also drawn to outsiders, people who have swum against the tide. I often feel like a kind of detective hired to go find people who have been lost to history, and discover why they were lost. Whodunnit? In this case, I found solid evidence that, of all people, Napoleon did it: he buried the memory of this great man—Gen. Alexandre Dumas, the son of a black slave who led more than 50,000 men at the height of the French Revolution and then stood up to the megalomaniacal Corsican in the deserts of Egypt. (The “famous” Alexandre Dumas is the general’s son—the author of The Three Musketeers.) Letters and eyewitness accounts show that Napoleon came to hate Dumas not only for his stubborn defense of principle but also for his swagger and stature—over six feet tall and handsome as a matinee idol—and for the fact that he was a black man idolized by the white French army. (I found that Napoleon’s destruction of Dumas coincided with his destruction of one of the greatest accomplishments of the French Revolution—racial equality—a legacy he also did his best to bury.) I first came across Gen. Dumas’s life in the memoir of his son Alexandre, the novelist. And what a life! Alex Dumas, as he preferred to be known, was born in Saint Domingue, later Haiti, the son of a black slave and a good-for-nothing French aristocrat who came to the islands to make a quick killing and instead barely survived. In fact, to get back to France in order to claim an inheritance, he actually “pawned” his black son into slavery, but then he bought him out, brought him to Paris, and enrolled him in the royal fencing academy, and then the story begins to get interesting. What really stuck with me from reading the memoir was the love that shows through from the son, the writer, for his father, the soldier. I could never forget the novelist describing the day his father died. His mother met him on the stairs in their house, lugging his father’s gun over his shoulders, and asked him what he was doing. Little Alexandre replied: “I’m going to heaven to kill God—for killing daddy.” When he grew up, he took a greater sort of revenge, infusing his father’s life and spirit into fictional characters like Edmond Dantes and D’Artagnan, with shades of Porthos, too. But the image of the angry child stuck with me and drove me onward to discover every scrap of evidence I could about his forgotten father. And recovering the life of the real man behind these stories was the ultimate historical prospecting journey for me: I learned about Maltese knights and Mameluke warriors, the tricks of 18th-century spycraft and glacier warfare, torchlight duels in the trenches and portable guillotines on the front; I got to know about how Commedia del Arte influenced Voodoo and how a Jacobin sultan influenced “The Star-Spangled Banner,” about chocolate cures for poisoning and the still brisk trade in Napoleonic hair clippings. I discovered the amazing forgotten civil rights movement of the 18th century—and its unraveling—though the most amazing thing about this story of a black man in a white world was how little race stood in his way: how Alex Dumas’s future father-in-law never once questioned his daughter marrying a man of color but only asked that he get promoted to sergeant first (later he lovingly referred to his son-in-law simply as “the General”). Finally, the memoir set me not only on a historical adventure but also on an adventure in the present day that was straight out of a Dumas novel. I began by visiting the gray town in northeast France where the general died—where I found a dead museum secretary, a locked safe, and a host of unlikely, inspiring characters to make my journey a far from lonely one.

dding rhetoric to a literature syllabus can spark something surprising in students. Few people can say that John Quincy Adams changed their lives. Those who can are wise to keep it to themselves. Friends tell me I should also stop prating about my passion for rhetoric, the 3,000-year-old art of persuasion. John Quincy Adams changed my life by introducing me to rhetoric. Sorry. Years ago, I was wandering through Dartmouth College’s library for no particular reason, browsing through books at random, and in a dim corner of the stacks I found a large section on rhetoric. A dusty, maroon-red volume attributed to Adams sat at eye level. I flipped it open and felt like an indoor Coronado. Here lay treasure. The book contained a set of rhetorical lectures that Adams taught to undergraduates at Harvard College in the early nineteenth century, when he was a paunchy, balding, 38-year-old United States senator. Adams urged his goggling adolescents to “catch from the relics of ancient oratory those unresisted powers” that, he assured them, “yield the guidance of the nation to the dominion of the voice.” Unresisted powers. They sounded more like hypnosis than politics, which was sort of cool in a Manchurian Candidate kind of way. And yet, I felt as if I were about to fill a vast gap in my life. As it turns out, rhetoric is filling an even bigger gap. Little did I know that Common Core State Standards would increase the need for rhetorical skills. These days, the core requires teachers and students to employ literacy standards beyond Language Arts. But we’re talking about more than the common core here. We’re talking about the critical need to nurture articulate, sophisticated citizens. Like you, most probably, I was a bookish child, absorbing everything I could from works on the Bobbsey Twins to those by Ursula K. Le Guin. I wanted to be a writer, and when a teacher told me that a real writer kept a daily journal, I did that. (Having little to write about, I kept careful notes of what I ate for lunch each day; I still keep a journal—one that covers far more than my midday meal—and I still call it “Lunch.”) But I wondered whether words did more than tell me things, whether there was something to them besides art. Don’t get me wrong, I loved words, and still do. But I felt like a young Dylan Thomas receiving books “that told everything about the wasp, except why.” Could words get up and make a living for themselves? Could they be useful somehow? Could they change people, maybe the world? I’d heard that the pen was mightier than the sword, and yet the self-expression I was taught in school and witnessed in literature was not of the worldchanging sort. And then I found rhetoric. The ancients considered it the essential skill of leadership, knowledge so important that they placed it at the center of higher education. It taught them how to speak and write persuasively, produce something to say on every occasion, and make people like them when they spoke. After the ancient Greeks invented it, rhetoric helped create the world’s first democracies. It trained Roman orators such as Julius Caesar and Marcus Tullius Cicero, and it gave the Bible its finest language. It even inspired William Shakespeare. Every one of America’s founders studied rhetoric, and they used its principles in writing the Constitution. In short, I found the why of words. I’m now convinced that I couldn’t truly understand the literature I love without my study in rhetoric. It gives a real purpose to a liberal education, pulling together all of a student’s knowledge while giving her the tools to inspire others. It inoculates her against the kind of manipulation and tribalism that poison our politics. It creates a good citizen. A truly educated one. You might say that while I was standing in those library stacks, rhetoric talked me into itself. I will never read or write the same again, and that is a very good thing.

Being a teenager has never been easy, but in recent years, with the rise of the Internet and social media, it has become exponentially more challenging. No writer is better poised to explore this territory than Emily Bazelon, who has established herself as a leading voice on the social and legal aspects of teenage drama. In Sticks and Stones, she brings readers on a deeply researched, clear-eyed journey into the ever-shifting landscape of teenage meanness and its sometimes devastating consequences. The result is an indispensable book that takes us from school cafeterias to courtrooms to the offices of Facebook, the website where so much teenage life, good and bad, now unfolds. Along the way, Bazelon defines what bullying is and, just as important, what it is not. She explores when intervention is essential and when kids should be given the freedom to fend for themselves. She also dispels persistent myths: that girls bully more than boys, that online and in-person bullying are entirely distinct, that bullying is a common cause of suicide, and that harsh criminal penalties are an effective deterrent. Above all, she believes that to deal with the problem, we must first understand it. Bazelon explores different facets of bullying through the stories of three young people who found themselves caught in the thick of it. With grace and authority, Bazelon chronicles how these kids’ predicaments escalated, to no one’s benefit, into community-wide wars. Cutting through the noise, misinformation, and sensationalism, she takes us into schools that have succeeded in reducing bullying and examines their successful strategies. The result is a groundbreaking book that will help parents, educators, and teens themselves better understand what kids are going through today and what can be done to help them through it.

hen I was in eighth grade, my friends fired me. Two and a half decades later, I can say that wryly: it happened to plenty of people, and we survived—look at us now, right? But at the time, in that moment, it was impossible to have that kind of perspective. Being rejected by the girls I loved left me crawling with insecurity and self-doubt—what had I done wrong? I disappeared from the lunchroom and hid during free periods. I dreaded the words “choose a partner” in class, especially gym, where you could either pair up and scamper away or stand there alone. At home I cried. On some level, I guess, I knew that I wasn’t the only lonely 13-year-old in the world, but how did that help, really? Instead of finding some inner source of comfort, I picked myself apart—was I too bossy? Irritating? Selfabsorbed? What was it that had driven them away? What was wrong with me? I can’t claim to have been bullied, at least not like the teenagers I write about in my book, Sticks and Stones, but I know the feeling of watching powerful kids rip a vulnerable one apart and not knowing how to diminish their power. Many of us have had a similarly indelible experience of bullying—of being predator or prey, of taking or failing to take a side, or being humiliated or ostracized or worse. We’re deeply affected by these encounters. They helped make us who we are, and the visceral memories and feelings stay with us, giving us a window we can actually see through, one that takes us right back to our childhood selves. We’re still trying to understand what happened to us and why, and what lessons we should draw from it all, about ourselves and about other people. And so a central question in my book is: Why does this particular aspect of growing up affect us so deeply? This problem has particular urgency right now because it isn’t just confined to schools anymore—it’s on our computer screens and cell phones for all to see. With the constant connectivity of these devices, bullying has started to feel omnipresent, inescapable. This makes it more lasting, more visible, more viral. The consequences have infinitely expanded. Understandably, parents are more concerned. Luckily, the heightened awareness of bullying has shined a spotlight on kids who are in need of protection from cruelty—because they’re gay, for example, or Muslim, or overweight. It has prompted a growing number of parents to talk to kids about the online risks posed not only by adult strangers but also by their classmates as well. At some schools, the push to prevent bullying has intersected with the recognition that kids need to be taught how to treat each other right, and even how to empathize, and that taking this on is a community-wide project with academic as well as social benefits. It used to be that “safe schools” meant schools without guns and knives. Today parents, and school officials, too, equate safety with their children’s emotional well-being. All of this has the potential to fuel the kind of sustained and transformative effort to reduce bullying that has previously fallen short in the United States—if, that is, we do it wisely and well. In hopes of helping to make that happen, I lay out some of the smartest ideas in Sticks and Stones. I hope it proves useful to you.

I’D LIkE To APoLoGIzE To EvERY TEACHER I EvER HAD

my Year as a Rookie Teacher at Northeast High by Tony Danza

Tony Danza will present the Random House Teacher Awards for Literacy at the 2013 National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Meeting on November 22nd. For more information, go to: www.randomhouse.com/teacherawards

I’d Like to Apologize to Every Teacher I Ever Had is television, screen, and stage star Tony Danza’s absorbing account of a year spent teaching tenthgrade English at Northeast High—Philadelphia’s largest high school with 3,600 students. Entering Northeast’s crowded halls in September of 2010, Danza found his way to a classroom filled with twenty-six students who were determined not to cut him any slack. They cared nothing about “Mr. Danza’s” showbiz credentials, and they immediately put him on the hot seat. Featuring indelible portraits of students and teachers alike, I’d Like to Apologize to Every Teacher I Ever Had reveals just how hard it is to keep today’s technologically savvy—and often alienated—students engaged, how impressively committed most teachers are, and the outsized role counseling plays in a teacher’s day, given the psychological burdens many students carry. The book also makes vivid how a modern high school works, showing Danza in a myriad of roles—from lecturing on To Kill a Mockingbird to “coaching” the football team to organizing a talent show to leading farflung field trips to hosting teacher gripe sessions. A surprisingly poignant account, I’d Like to Apologize to Every Teacher I Ever Had is sometimes laugh-out-loud funny but is mostly filled with hardwon wisdom and feel-good tears.

About the author TONY DANZA, before he grew up and starred on Broadway and in such classic TV series as Taxi and Who’s the Boss?, was a “discipline problem” at Long Island’s Malverne High School, for which he is deeply apologetic. These days, he divides his time between New York City and Los Angeles. © Deborah Wald

“It takes a lot of courage to stand in front of a group of teens and proclaim yourself their teacher. It takes even more to be a good one—someone who sees each student as an individual with a unique life story. Tony Danza put himself forward to teach children and learn from them, knowing that the more he really understood these kids the better teacher he could be for them. We easily forget how truly difficult it is to be a transformational teacher and in these pages you can see that’s what he became.” —ROSALIND WISEMAN, AUTHOR OF QUEEN BEES WANNABEES AND MASTERMINDS AND WINGMEN

AND

“A witty, self-deprecating, and charming account of how being a teacher extends far beyond the four walls of a classroom. From sweating through his shirt to harboring adoption fantasies, Tony Danza depicts his brutally and beautifully real experience as a first-year high-school teacher. With humor and honesty, he highlights the emotional toll of teaching and describes how one of the most important careers in America is still one of the most unappreciated.” —ERIN GRUWELL , AUTHOR OF THE FREEDOM WRITERS DIARY

Dear Teachers, ere is my little note of encouragement as you are either returning to yet another school year or beginning your teaching career. I wish you all the best year of your students’ lives—I know that’s what you all wish for. The truth is, though, that this is a tough time for teachers and it’s gotten tougher since I taught for one year at Northeast High in Philadelphia in 2010. I’m back there often and I was just there for commencement where six hundred kids graduated. The day was electric! That’s the good news. The bad news is that, the night before, there was a retirement party for thirty-four of the school’s teachers. Their overriding reason for leaving was the contract they’d been offered by the district. Being a teacher was never about getting rich, but the continuing pay cuts and further givebacks proved to be a tipping point for them. It’s too bad that teachers, after years of service, are forced to decide when to leave based on any issue other than that they are ready to stop doing what they love. No reflection on a job and career done well, just a pragmatic decision about money. To many teachers, this is the final indignity. There were tears. But this is supposed to be an uplifting message to coincide with your return to school and the release of the paperback version of my book, I’d Like to Apologize to Every Teacher I Ever Had, and I want to be as encouraging as possible. However, I also want people to know about the obstacles teachers face—and attempt to overcome—every day in schools all over the country. Teachers today have to be so many things to their students—not only an instructor, but also sometimes mother, father, sister, brother, best friend, social worker, and therapist. They have to teach morals, values, self-control, and the curriculum, all in forty-five minutes. They have to try to counteract a culture that undermines not only education, but also childhood itself. I would tell my tenth graders that hard work and good behavior would pay off. Then they would go home and watch Jersey Shore, come back to class, and tell me, “No, Mr. Danza. There’s another way.” In spite of all that and more, teachers will continue to do their best with their students, and we all should be grateful for their commitment. I know I am. There is no more important job than the one you have, shaping our youth and insuring the continuation of our society. So, teachers, have that great year! Have many moments when your lessons sing and you see your children’s eyes light up. When something you teach resonates with them, congratulate yourself every time one of your students references that lesson. May the unmotivated student become a hard worker and parents show up for your conferences. May professional development be interesting and fun, and administrators be understanding and have a little extra money for special projects. May the country wake up and realize that we need to educate all of our children and how important our teachers are to the future of our country.

Helping our Boys Cope with Schoolyard Power, Locker-Room Tests, Girlfriends, and the New Rules of Boy World by Rosalind Wiseman

In this essential book by the acclaimed author of Queen Bees & Wannabes, Rosalind Wiseman explains the way boys think to show parents, educators, and coaches how to reach out and help boys overcome their most common yet difficult challenges. Queen Bees & Wannabes, the groundbreaking book and the basis of the film Mean Girls, upended assumptions about how teenage girls relate to one another. But lost in the attention was an equally important and vulnerable group: boys. Less prone to talk about their feelings, stereotyped as settling every dispute with a fistfight, boys face social issues that have long been ignored as an important key to understanding their behavior. Hence, Wiseman worked collaboratively for two years with middle-school and highschool boys to show the emotional terrain they inhabit. What she learned is critically important for any parent to know. Boys feel pain and need support, just as much as girls—but they’re far more likely to hide their feelings, claim everything is “fine” and believe that adult involvement will only make their lives worse. Their cliques and social hierarchies, dominated by mastermind ringleaders and adjutant wingmen, exert as powerful an influence as “queen-bee factions,” but they can be even more difficult for parents to see, let alone decipher. This book explains how parents can recognize what their son is dealing with and break through communication barriers to provide the critical support a boy needs to succeed and to develop a positive, authentic, and strong sense of self.

“This book is a gem. Rosalind Wiseman offers readers deep, nuanced, up-tothe-minute insight into today’s boy. She explains how and why boys, in so many areas, make it easy for parents and educators to miss out on their suffering and their strength. Most important, she shows how to reach out and lift boys up without getting on their nerves.” —WENDY MOGEL , PH.D., AUTHOR OF THE BLESSING OF A SKINNED K NEE

Boys are so much easier than girls. There’s no drama. Boys just punch it out and it’s over.

E

leven years ago when I published Queen Bees & Wannabes, a huge amount of attention was placed on girls and their social dynamics. But in all the years I’ve worked with boys and girls, I knew that boys struggled with many of the same challenges girls did—we were just having a really hard time seeing it. As the years passed I grew increasingly concerned, as I saw many boys adopt an appearance of detachment from their most meaningful relationships, their future academic or professional success, and any desire to make the world a better place. In the words of Will, age 20: In my AP classes, I was always one of five guys. The same five guys in a classroom of girls. I had plenty of guy friends who could have taken those classes but they didn’t want to do it. They’d rather be the best among the mediocre. Really my friends would rather look stupid. Two years ago, I decided to pull back the curtain on Boy World—a place I knew was much more complex than most people believe. The first step was to recruit hundreds of boys to serve as editors. Together, we created a new language and analytical framework to understand the power of boys’ social hierarchies and how they influence their decision-making and emotional well-being. The result of our work is Masterminds & Wingmen: Helping Our Boys Cope with Schoolyard Power, Locker Room Tests, Girlfriends, and the New Rules of Boy World. In sharp contrast to the stereotype of boys not liking to read or share their personal lives, boys diligently worked with me to show you what’s behind the Boy World curtain and to give you the insight you need to have the best relationship possible with the boys in your life. No longer can we assume boys are easy because they keep quiet. As a mom of two boys, I know how hard it can be to break through the wall of a boy’s silence. I know how easy it is to misunderstand what’s going on in their lives, draw the wrong conclusions, and push boys away. We owe it to our boys to do better. We owe it to the girls who are growing up with our boys to do better. Masterminds & Wingmen is a call to action to change the way we talk to and about boys so that we can help them navigate adolescence to become the men they want to be, and men we can be proud of.

QUIET: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking by Susan Cain

Passionately argued, impressively researched, and filled with the indelible stories of real people, Quiet shows how dramatically we undervalue introverts, and how much we lose in doing so. Drawing on cutting-edge research on the biology and psychology of temperament, Susan Cain charts the rise of “the extrovert ideal” over the twentieth century and explores its far-reaching effects—how it helps to determine everything from how parishioners worship to who excels at Harvard Business School. This extraordinary book has the power to permanently change how we see introverts and, equally important, how they see themselves. About the author SUSAN CAIN is a writer whose articles on introversion and shyness have appeared in the New York Times; The Atlantic; on Time.com; and on PsychologyToday.com. Winner of the Alex Award

An emotionally charged coming-of-age novel, Tell the Wolves I’m Home is a tender story of love lost and found, an unforgettable portrait of the way compassion can make us whole again. 1987. There’s only one person who has ever truly understood 14-yearold June Elbus, and that’s her uncle, the renowned painter Finn Weiss. Shy at school and distant from her older sister, June can only be herself in Finn’s company; he is her godfather, confidant, and best friend. So when he dies, far too young, of a mysterious illness her mother can barely speak about, June’s world is turned upside down. But Finn’s death brings a surprise acquaintance into June’s life. At the funeral, June notices a strange man lingering just beyond the crowd. A few days later, she receives a package in the mail containing a beautiful teapot she recognizes from Finn’s apartment, and a note from Toby, the stranger, asking for an opportunity to meet. As the two begin to spend time together, June realizes she’s not the only one who misses Finn, and that this unexpected friend just might be the one she needs the most.

ere’s a secret: When I first started Tell the Wolves I’m Home I had no idea whether it would turn out to be an adult or a YA book. “Tell the story you need to tell and worry about the rest later.” That was the advice everyone gave me. Good, I thought. I like worrying about things later. So I forged ahead and pounded out a solid first draft. I told a story of a shy, socially-awkward, teenager in 1987 and her love for her dying uncle and her secret friendship with the man he loved. I told a story of AIDS and shame and things we hide from other people. Mostly, though, I told a story about love. Looking back, I think that first draft could have made a pretty decent YA novel. It was half the length of the published version and it was a more streamlined unlikely friendship story. Still, it seemed like there was more to say. I kept working and reworking and by the time I’d redrafted several more times I found that I’d added 60,000 more words and several extra layers to the story. At that point I was sure it was no longer really YA, but rather an adult novel with a teen narrator. My agent agreed and Random House published it as adult literary fiction. That was the end of it. Genre questions put to rest. So I thought, anyway. Until the day someone told me I’d written a historical novel. I’d pondered YA or adult, but historical? No way. “Um, I don’t think so,” I said. June, my narrator, is 14 in 1987, three years younger than I would have been. The book is set during my teenage years. I am not historical! The someone in question gave a slow, but certain nod. “1987 was 26 years ago. History.” I felt myself blushing. Could I really have been so unaware of my own and my book’s status? Was it time for me to start wearing slacks and a nice practical blazer? What did this mean? I didn’t really know and so I just told myself it wasn’t true. I hadn’t written a historical novel at all. It was still in the realms of the contemporary and that was that. That’s what I was going to believe. Then I started getting letters from readers. Letters from people my age who shared their memories of fear and confusion during that time, of losing fathers and uncles. There were letters from people older than me, men and women who lost many good friends in the ’80s and ’90s. Those letters broke my heart, but it was the ones from younger readers, readers in their teens and early 20s that finally made me understand what historical meant. It was those readers who wrote to tell me that they couldn’t believe that there was a time when AIDS was perceived with so much panic and misunderstanding. That they couldn’t believe people could have been so inhumane. Really? You really don’t know about that? Until those letters came to me I really thought everybody remembered. But they didn’t. Their memories—the stuff that will be their history in the future—is made of strides forward in gay rights. 2012 was a landmark year in gay rights history. The leaps forward have been astounding. Gay marriage wasn’t even in the universe of things worth dreaming about in the ’80s. It just didn’t seem possible. But now here we are. All of us. Many amazing and wonderful things have happened for Tell the Wolves I’m Home. It’s become a New York Times bestseller and was on many “best of the year” lists. I’m thrilled about all of that, but the most exciting thing of all was having my novel honored with an ALA Alex Award for adult books with special appeal to teens. YA. Adult. In the end it didn’t matter after all. It’s a story that can be shared across the generations. A bridge between what is now and what we still need to remember. A marker of how far we’ve come. The most common thing that readers tell me when they take the time to get in touch is this: After reading your book I felt like I wanted to be kinder to the people I love. And that’s the best reason I can think of for why Tell the Wolves I’m Home would make a terrific common read for your students.

Spellbinding, haunting, The Age of Miracles is a beautiful novel of catastrophe and survival, growth and change, the story of Julia and her family as they struggle to live in an extraordinary time. On an ordinary Saturday, Julia awakes to discover that something has happened to the rotation of the earth. The days and nights are growing longer and longer, gravity is affected, the birds, the tides, human behavior, and cosmic rhythms are thrown into disarray. In a world of danger and loss, Julia faces surprising developments in herself, and her personal world—divisions widening between her parents, strange behavior by her friends, the vulnerability of first love, a sense of isolation, and a rebellious new strength. With crystalline prose and the indelible magic of a born storyteller, Karen Thompson Walker gives us a breathtaking portrait of people finding ways to go on in an ever-evolving world.

“A genuinely moving tale that mixes the real and surreal, the ordinary and the extraordinary, with impressive fluency and flair.” —MICHIKO K AKUTANI, THE NEW YORK TIMES

“Walker creates lovely, low-key scenes to dramatize her premise. . . . The spirit of Ray Bradbury hovers in the mixture of the portentous and quotidian.” —THE NEW YORKER

“Beautiful and frightening. . . . Against an apocalyptic backdrop, Karen Thompson Walker sets the coming-of-age story of brave, bewildered Julia, who wonders at the ‘malleable rhythms’ of the increasingly erratic adults around her. Like master fabulists Steven Millhauser and Kevin Brockmeier, Karen Thompson Walker takes a fantastic premise and makes it feel thrillingly real. In precise, poetic language, she floods the California suburbs with shadows and a doomsday glow, and in this altered light shows us amazing things about how one family responds to a stunningly imagined global crisis.” —K AREN RUSSELL , AUTHOR OF SWAMPLANDIA !

T

he Age of Miracles, my first novel, is the story of a young girl and her family who wake one morning to some astonishing news: the rotation of the earth has suddenly begun to slow. In the year since it was published, I’ve had the good fortune to travel all over the country— and the world—to meet with readers of all ages at libraries, bookstores, book festivals, and, best of all, schools. People have asked me all kinds of questions, but certain ones come up again and again, no matter the age of the audience. Some are easy to answer, like these: • How did I get the idea? (Back in 2004, the speed of the rotation of the earth really did change by a slight margin following the earthquake that caused the tsunami in Indonesia, and I began to wonder right away what would happen if a much larger shift occurred.) • How much scientific research did I do? (A lot, some on my own and some with the help of a very generous astrophysicist, who worked with me to make the science seem as real as possible.) • Is there going to be a movie? (Yes! Film rights have been optioned, and Twilight’s Catherine Hardwicke has been hired to direct it.) Other questions are harder to answer, like this one: Did I write this book for adults or for young adults? I’ve been asked this question almost everywhere I’ve been, from Australia to Poland to Kansas. Although she narrates the story from adulthood, the main character, Julia, is an 11-year-old girl, and the book is tightly focused on the highs and lows of adolescence—all that love and sadness—and many readers feel it appeals to both audiences. (In France, my publisher even produced two editions with identical texts but different covers, one marketed to adults, the other to teenagers.) As for me, I just wrote this book for a reader like me. Ever since I was a teenager, my favorite books have been the ones that combine gripping stories with stylish and insightful writing. That’s the kind of book I aspired to write, and it has been hugely satisfying to learn that teenagers as well as adults are responding to it. The Age of Miracles is a story about growing up in a time of profound uncertainty, something that can apply to all readers. One thing readers of all ages have mentioned is that the book makes them think. I didn’t really set out to write a book about climate change, but I wrote it during a time when we could no longer afford to ignore the very real damage we’re doing to our planet, and the book is partly a love letter to our natural world, in all its beauty and fragility. I’m proud that The Age of Miracles has been chosen as a common read for incoming freshman at several colleges, one of which was specifically searching for a book that addressed environmental issues. Lastly, please know that I love visiting schools and am always more than happy to speak to students, whether in person or via Skype. Thank you so much for considering the book for your students.

torytelling began with pictures. We find ancient ones painted on cave walls and carved into rocks. The most treasured books of yesteryear were “illuminated” with illustrated designs throughout their text and margins. Since childhood, my imagination has been fired by photography, so when it came to writing my first novel, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, it only seemed natural that I would include photographs along with my words. They weren’t photos I took or created in Photoshop, but real snapshots that I found, in flea markets and in the attics of collectors—most of them old family photos that had been abandoned and orphaned, much like the children in my story. I felt like I was in some sense rescuing the photos and giving them a new life through the story I was telling—even if that story was fiction, and had little to do with who the people in the photos might’ve actually been. (I’m sure, for instance, that my photo of a skinny boy lifting a giant boulder wasn’t actually a photo of a supernaturally strong kid, but that the rock was made of foam, or something—but there’s no way of knowing for sure!) Because I didn’t know the real stories behind my photos, I had to make up new, fantastical ones. Fantastical because the story of Miss Peregrine is partly fantasy, about a boy who stumbles upon a Welsh home for children who can do very peculiar things, like make fire with their bare hands and levitate. And yet, despite these elements, Miss Peregrine has one foot planted in reality, too. The photographs help reinforce that. Whenever the story seems about to veer into pure fantasy, a photograph comes along, and the reader sees some of the bizarre things they’ve just been reading about with their own eyes. (You believe your eyes, don’t you?) So the pictures do double-duty: they make it easier to suspend your natural disbelief in the more fantastical parts of the story, and they help to root the story in history. Because Miss Peregrine is part historical fiction, too. My protagonist’s grandfather was a Holocaust survivor, something that’s very much at the heart of the story (though that subplot doesn’t take up many pages). World War II looms around every corner in the book. The children live in a time loop that keeps them locked in September 3rd, 1940, and outside that loop is a war-torn world of enemy bombers and submarines and the looming menace of Nazi Germany. Real photos from that period, of warplanes haunting the sky or soldiers posing with unexploded bombs, are peppered throughout the book. In Hollow City, my follow-up to Miss Peregrine, the children are cast out into that war-torn world. In order to save Miss Peregrine, they must make their way to London, where the infamous Blitz is turning the city into a smoking ruin. (A hollowed city, as it were.) Along the way the children are hounded by monsters, discover more loops, meet strange new peculiar children, and fall in with a menagerie of peculiar animals, but all this fantasy—and the disintegration of their peculiar world—are connected to the disintegration of the real world, as it played out in history. I’m not interested in fantasy for fantasy’s sake—I like my fantasy to ask questions about the real world, the world you and I live in. If I’ve been successful, Hollow City not only engages with some of the most fascinating chapters of twentieth-century history, but it also asks important questions about what it means to be good, about the nature of family, and about the difficult choices we face when our dreams don’t quite measure up to reality. But above all, I hope you and your students have as much fun reading it as I had writing it.
