CONFLUENCE A River, the Environment, Politics and the Fate of All Humanity By Nathaniel Tripp Foreword by Howard Dean In a literal sense, humans and rivers are inextricably connected: we carry the same pesticides and heavy metals, antibiotics and estrogen in our bloodstreams. ISRAEL & PALESTINE TRAGEDY OF ZIONISM By Bernard Avashai Could Israel be a democratic state if, in the name of being a Jewish state, it discriminated against non-Jews, including a fifth of its citizens who are of Palestinian Arab origin? Could it be a Jewish state without granting a privileged position to Jewish orthodoxy? The Tragedy of Zionism calls for democracy as an end in itself—not as a political luxury, but as an indispensable means to settle disputes nonviolently. WALLED Israeli Society at an Impasse By Sylvain Cypel Walled examines the contemporary state of mind of Israel’s citizens, tracing the history of the State of Israel back to the Jewish national movement and the beginnings of Zionism. Cypel offers a lucid analysis of the Israeli-Palestinian situation and powerfully demonstrates that the wall of protection erected in the West Bank by Israel is the most visible symptom of a society in peril. Those who are walled, Cypel argues, are first and foremost the Israelis themselves, who have chosen to ignore rather than acknowledge the existence and rights of their neighbors. THE LOST YEARS Radical Islam, Intifada, and Wars in the Middle East 2001-2006 By Charles Enderlin Translated by Susan Verderber In The Lost Years, Charles Enderlin presents a scrupulous chronicle of the Israeli and Palestinian conflict. Political leaders and secret negotiators, military chiefs and CIA agents, Enderlin has met them all—Israelis and Palestinians—and he accounts for all sides, including U.S. and international involvement. He trails the bad political calculations of the Palestinians, which led to the defeat of Fatah and to the victory of the Islamists. And he exposes Israel’s unilateral political approach and new military doctrines that had disastrous consequences for both camps. WHEN THE BIRDS STOPPED SINGING Life in Ramallah Under Siege By Raja Shehadeh “This short, powerful book should be required reading for anyone who has ever wondered what it’s like to be an ordinary citizen living in a war zone. Shehadeh’s view of the volatile Israeli-Palestinian conflict is certainly not neutral, dealing with his emotions and experiences during Israel’s incursion into his West Bank city during the spring of 2002. GOD GREW TIRED OF US A Memoir By John Bul Dau with Michael S. Sweeney • Common Reading Selection for Colleges This unforgettable book is the first-person account of a miracle—indeed, a whole series of miracles. One of the uprooted youngsters known as the Lost Boys of Sudan, John Bul Dau was 12 years old when civil war ravaged his village and shattered its age-old society, a life of herding and agriculture marked by dignity, respect, and the simple virtues of Dinka tribal tradition. As tracer bullets split the night and mortar shells exploded around him, John fled into the darkness—the first terrified moments of a journey that would lead him thousands of miles into an exile that was to last many years. John’s memoir of his Dinka childhood shows African life and values at their best, while his searing account of hardship, famine, and war also testifies to human resilience and kindness. “This earnest, heart-on-the-sleeve memoir reinforces the preciousness of all human life and should serve as a reality check for the rest of world.” —Star Tribune (Minneapolis)

LIFE LAID BARE The Survivors in Rwanda Speak By Jean Hatzfeld Translated by Linda Coverdale “Jean Hatzfeld’s Machete Season, wherein the perpetrators of the Rwandan genocide spoke about their crimes, was an astonishing feat of reportage and oral history. Life Laid Bare, which allows the victims to speak, is an even greater achievement—a book so elegantly wrought, so unexpected and revelatory, that it’s absolutely essential reading in understanding what happened in Rwanda, how the survivors of genocide find a way to begin again while never forgetting to bear witness. As Marie-Lousie Kagoyire, one of the narrators says, ‘[S]howing our hearts to a stranger, talking about how we feel, laying bare our feelings as survivors, that shocks us beyond measure.’” —Dave Eggers, author of What Is the What

THE WORLDING PROJECT Doing Cultural Studies in the Era of Globalization Edited by Rob Wilson and Christopher Leigh Connery Globalization discourse now presumes that the “world space” is entirely at the mercy of market norms and forms promulgated by reactionary U.S. policies. An academic but accessible set of studies, this wide range of essays by noted scholars challenges this paradigm with diverse and strong arguments. Taking on topics that range from the medieval Mediterranean to contemporary Jamaican music, from Hong Kong martial arts cinema to Taiwanese politics, writers such as David Palumbo-Liu, Meaghan Morris, James Clifford, and others use innovative cultural studies to challenge the globalization narrative with a new and trenchant tactic called “worlding.” North Atlantic Books • TR • 978-1-55643-680-2 • 256pp. $16.00/$21.00 Can. • Exam Copy: $3.00

TRUST IS NOT ENOUGH Bringing Human Rights to Medicine By David J. Rothman and Sheila M. Rothman During the last half-century many international declarations have proclaimed health care to be a fundamental human right. But high aspirations repeatedly confront harsh realities, in societies both rich and poor. To illustrate this disparity, two university scholars, David and Sheila Rothman, bring together stories from their investigations around the world into medical abuses. A central theme runs through their accounts: how the principles of human rights, including bodily integrity, informed consent, and freedom from coercion, should guide physicians and governments in dealing with patients and health care. Whether discussing the training of young doctors in the US, the effects of segregation on medicine in Zimbabwe, or proposals for rationing health care, the authors conclude that an ethical and professional concern for observing medicine’s oldest commandment—do no harm-—must be joined with a profound commitment to protecting human rights. BREACH OF FAITH Hurricane Katrina and the Near Death of a Great American City By Jed Horne Journalist Jed Horne, a French Quarter resident, was an up-close witness to the chaos and horror of Hurricane Katrina. Drawing on his two decades in the Big Easy, Horne steps back and locates the roots of the disaster in the culture of New Orleans; in the politics of this troubled city; and in the national politics of homeland security, poverty, and race relations. He addresses the government’s lackluster response to the crisis, the polarizing debate over whether to rebuild the city, and the initial reconstruction efforts. “[A] splendid mix of reporting and commentary...Horne, with a sure grasp of local politics and culture, provides a [clear] sense of why things fell apart so completely in New Orleans.” —New York Times Book Review

PRISONS—U.S. LAST CHANCE IN TEXAS The Redemption of Criminal Youth By John Hubner A powerful, bracing, and deeply spiritual look at intensely troubled youth, Last Chance in Texas gives a stirring account of the way one remarkable prison rehabilitates its inmates. While reporting on the juvenile court system, journalist John Hubner kept hearing about a facility in Texas that ran the most aggressive—and one of the most successful—treatment programs for violent young offenders in America. Cutting through the political platitudes surrounding the controversial issue of juvenile justice, Hubner lays bare the complex ties between abuse and violence. By turns wrenching and uplifting, Last Chance in Texas tells a profoundly moving story about the children who grow up to inflict on others the violence that they themselves have suffered. PRISONS: INSIDE THE NEW AMERICA From Vernooykill Creek to Abu Ghraib By David Matlin Foreword by Ishmael Reed For ten years, David Matlin taught at a maximum-security prison, a daily confrontation with the nature of society, crime, and violence. Based on his experiences, this book examines the history of prisons in the United States and shows the terrible price a lethal combination of degradation, abuse, and corruption inflicts on inmates and society as a whole. Engulfing and enraging, the book challenges readers to take a long look at the culture of crime and punishment. “It’s a really impressive piece of work, which captures with wrenching vividness the torture we inflict on others, and ultimately on ourselves.” —Noam Chomsky

THE LIFE YOU CAN SAVE Acting Now to End World Poverty By Peter Singer Around the world, a billion people struggle to live each day on less than many of us pay for bottled water. The people of the developed world face a profound choice: If we are not to turn our backs on a fifth of the world’s population, we must become part of the solution. In The Life You Can Save, philosopher Peter Singer uses ethical arguments, provocative thought experiments, illuminating examples, and case studies of charitable giving to show that our current response to world poverty is not only insufficient but ethically indefensible. EXCERPT—Chapter 1 Six years after the fact, Dr. Paul Edward Farmer reminded me, “We met because of a beheading, of all things.” It was two weeks before Christmas 1994, in a market town in the central plateau of Haiti, a patch of paved road called Mirebalais. Near the center of town there was a Haitian army outpost–a concrete wall enclosing a weedy parade field, a jail, and a mustard-colored barracks. I was sitting with an American Special Forces captain, named Jon Carroll, on the building’s second-story balcony. Evening was coming on, the town’s best hour, when the air changed from hot to balmy and the music from the radios in the rum shops and the horns of the tap-taps passing through town grew loud and bright and the general filth and poverty began to be obscured, the open sewers and the ragged clothing and the looks on the faces of malnourished children and the extended hands of elderly beggars plaintively saying, “Grangou,” which means “hungry” in Creole. I was in Haiti to report on American soldiers. Twenty thousand of them had been sent to reinstate the country’s democratically elected government, and to strip away power from the military junta that had deposed it and ruled with great cruelty for three years. …

EXCERPT—Chapter 1 Bujumbura—New York, May 1994 On the outskirts of the capital, Bujumbura, there is a small international airport. It has a modern terminal with intricate roofs and domed metal structures that resemble astronomical observatories. It is the kind of terminal that seems designed to say that here you leave the past behind, the future has arrived, behold the wonders of aviation. But in Burundi in 1994, for the lucky few with tickets, an airplane was fastest, safest way out. It was flight. In the spring of that year, violence and chaos governed Burundi. To the west, the hills above Bujumbura were burning. Smoke seemed to be pouring off the hills, as the winds of mid-May carried the plumes of smoke downward in undulating sheets, in the general direction of the airport. A large passenger jet was parked on the tarmac, and a disordered crowd was heading toward it in sweaty haste. Deo felt as if he were being carried by the crowd, immersed in an unfamiliar river. The faces around him were mostly white, and though many were black or brown, there was no one whom he recognized, and so far as he could tell there were no country people. …
