We hope your school year is off to a good start so far. It’s been a bittersweet one for us at Penguin Random House, as we lost a truly remarkable author and friend: Dr. Maya Angelou, who died at her home in North Carolina on May 28th, 2014. It seems like there isn’t anyone who hasn’t been affected by her powerful writing; countless teachers have shared their experiences of teaching Dr. Angelou’s books including her groundbreaking autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, a classic of contemporary American literature. We encourage you to read a thoughtful note about her legacy from her publisher on page 2. In 2014 we also lost Louie Zamperini, a true hero whose incredible journey from juvenile delinquent to Olympian athlete to WWII airman and POW became the subject of Laura Hillenbrand’s unforgettable book Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption (page 6), as well as a major motion picture directed by Angelina Jolie, which is scheduled to open on Christmas Day. We hope you enjoy and use the Unbroken classroom poster included in the back of this catalog. Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou (April 4, 1928 – May 28, 2014)
A NOTE
TO
EDUCATORS
I’m sure many of you can remember the first time you read Maya Angelou’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Perhaps it was assigned to you in class, recommended to you for summer reading, or maybe you simply chose to read it on your own. Whatever your path, I have no doubt that this powerful memoir stayed with you long after you finished reading, much as it has with me. © Dwight Carter

I KNOW WHY THE CAGED BIRD SINGS
S
ent by their mother to live with their devout, self-sufficient grandmother in a small Southern town, Maya and her brother, Bailey, endure the ache of abandonment and the prejudice of the local “powhitetrash.” At eight years old and back at her mother’s side in St. Louis, Maya is attacked by a man many times her age—and has to live with the consequences for a lifetime. Years later, in San Francisco, Maya learns about love for herself and the kindness of others, her own strong spirit, and the ideas of great authors (“I met and fell in love with William Shakespeare”) will allow her to be free instead of imprisoned. Poetic and powerful, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is a modern American classic that will touch hearts and change minds for as long as people read. “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings liberates the reader into life simply because Maya Angelou confronts her own life with such a moving wonder, such a luminous dignity.” —JAMES BALDWIN

RAINBOW IN THE CLOUD
The Wisdom and Spirit of Maya Angelou
“W
ords mean more than what is set down on paper,” Maya Angelou wrote in her groundbreaking memoir I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Indeed, Angelou’s words have traveled the world and transformed lives—inspiring, strengthening, and healing. Through a long and prolific career in letters, she became one of the most celebrated voices of our time. Now, in this collection of sage advice, humorous quips, and pointed observations culled from the author’s great works, including The Heart of a Woman, On the Pulse of Morning, Gather Together in My Name, and Letter to My Daughter, Maya Angelou’s spirit endures. Rainbow in the Clouds offers resonant and rewarding quotes on such topics as creativity and culture, family and community, equality and race, values and spirituality, and parenting and relationships. Perhaps most special, Maya Angelou’s only son, Guy Johnson, has contributed some of his mother’s most powerful sayings, shared directly with him and the members of their family.
MAYA ANGELOU: THE COMPLETE POETRY

Reading the trials and triumphs of an unforgettable heroine—a young black girl in the South who suffered unspeakable violence at an early age—was an extraordinarily profound literary experience for me. Angelou shone a light on the hardships of the rural South with vivid prose that captured the very dust of the landscape and the deepest despair of residents victimized by Jim Crow-era oppression. And yet, against this backdrop, she explored the depth of family strength and wisdom—the very essence of her own perseverance and transcendence—through the words of her grandmother (Momma), her brother (Bailey), and her mother (Lady) —all larger than life figures whose characters impressed not only the young Maya, but so many of us reading their words on the page. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is a groundbreaking testimony to the resilience of the human spirit. And with its exploration of the power of each individual’s voice, its celebration of our collective strength, and its dynamic portrayal of an extraordinary woman’s life, Caged Bird is as relevant to today’s students as ever. As Random House celebrates and reflects on the beautiful life of our literary icon and dear friend, Maya Angelou, we feel our most meaningful tribute will be to introduce new generations to her work—most especially I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. We are inviting you, the educators, to join us in this initiative. While a light has gone out at Random House, Dr. Angelou was truly an inspiration to all. We are proud and honored to have known her and to be part of the devoted team that publishes her work. And while we will deeply miss her soothing voice and magnanimous spirit, we are confident her work, her wisdom, and her legacy will continue to live on. Thank you for partnering with us to further that phenomenal legacy. —Gina Centrello, President & Publisher, Random House Group

In boyhood, Louis Zamperini was an incorrigible delinquent. As a teenager, he channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that carried him to the Berlin Olympics. But when World War II began, the athlete became an airman, embarking on a journey that led to a doomed flight on a May afternoon in 1943. When his Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean, against all odds, Zamperini survived, adrift on a foundering life raft. Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will. Unbroken is truly an unforgettable testament to the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit, brought vividly to life by Seabiscuit author Laura Hillenbrand. This paperback edition contains twenty arresting new photos and an extensive Q&A with the author.

THE ONE-BOY INSURGENCY
n the predawn darkness of August 26, 1929, in the back bedroom of a small house in Torrance, California, a twelve-year-old boy sat up in bed, listening. There was a sound coming from outside, growing ever louder. It was a huge, heavy rush, suggesting immensity, a great parting of air. It was coming from directly above the house. The boy swung his legs off his bed, raced down the stairs, slapped open the back door, and loped onto the grass. The yard was otherworldly, smothered in unnatural darkness, shivering with sound. The boy stood on the lawn beside his older brother, head thrown back, spellbound. The sky had disappeared. An object that he could see only in silhouette, reaching across a massive arc of space, was suspended low in the air over the house. It was longer than two and a half football fields and as tall as a city. It was putting out the stars. What he saw was the German dirigible Graf Zeppelin. At nearly 800 feet long and 110 feet high, it was the largest flying machine ever crafted. More luxurious than the finest airplane, gliding effortlessly over huge distances, built on a scale that left spectators gasping, it was, in the summer of ‘29, the wonder of the world. The airship was three days from completing a sensational feat of aeronautics, circumnavigation of the globe. The journey had begun on August 7, when the Zeppelin had slipped its tethers in Lakehurst, New Jersey, lifted up with a long, slow sigh, and headed for Manhattan. On Fifth Avenue that summer, demolition was soon to begin on the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, clearing the way for a skyscraper of unprecedented proportions, the Empire State Building. At Yankee Stadium, in the Bronx, players were debuting numbered uniforms: Lou Gehrig wore No. 4; Babe Ruth, about to hit his five hundredth home run, wore No. 3. On Wall Street, stock prices were racing toward an alltime high. After a slow glide around the Statue of Liberty, the Zeppelin banked north, then turned out over the Atlantic. In time, land came below again: France, Switzerland, Germany. The ship passed over Nuremberg, where fringe politician Adolf Hitler, whose Nazi Party had been trounced in the 1928 elections, had just delivered a speech touting selective infanticide. Then it flew east of Frankfurt, where a Jewish woman named Edith Frank was caring for her newborn, a girl named Anne. Sailing northeast, the Zeppelin crossed over Russia. Siberian villagers, so isolated that they’d never even seen a train, fell to their knees at the sight of it. On August 19, as some four million Japanese waved handkerchiefs and shouted “Banzai!” the Zeppelin circled Tokyo and sank onto a landing field. Four days later, as the German and Japanese anthems played, the ship rose into the grasp of a typhoon that whisked it over the Pacific at breathtaking speed, toward America. Passengers gazing from the windows saw only the ship’s shadow, following it along the clouds “like a huge shark swimming alongside.” When the clouds parted, the passengers glimpsed giant creatures, turning in the sea, that looked like monsters. On August 25, the Zeppelin reached San Francisco. After being cheered down the California coast, it slid through sunset, into darkness and silence, and across midnight. As slow as the drifting wind, it passed over Torrance, where its only audience was a scattering of drowsy Classroom Poster Included souls, among them the boy in his pajamas behind the house on Gramercy Avenue. in Back of Catalog

In the tradition of the best investigative journalism, physician and reporter Sheri Fink reconstructs five days at Memorial Medical Center and draws the reader into the lives of those who struggled mightily to survive and to maintain life amidst chaos. After Katrina struck and the floodwaters rose, the power failed, and the heat climbed, exhausted caregivers chose to designate certain patients last for rescue. Months later, several health professionals faced criminal allegations that they deliberately injected numerous patients with drugs to hasten their deaths. Five Days at Memorial, the culmination of six years of reporting, unspools the mystery of what happened in those days, bringing the reader into a hospital fighting for its life and into a conversation about the most terrifying form of health care rationing. In a voice at once involving and fair, masterful and intimate, Fink exposes the hidden dilemmas of end-of-life care and reveals just how ill-prepared we are in America for the impact of large-scale disasters— and how we can do better. A remarkable book, engrossing from start to finish, Five Days at Memorial radically transforms your understanding of human nature in crisis.

About the author SHERI FINK’s reporting has won the Pulitzer Prize, the National Magazine Award, and the Overseas Press Club Lowell Thomas Award, among other journalism prizes. Most recently, her coverage of Hurricanes Sandy and Isaac received the Mike Berger Award from Columbia University and the Beat Reporting Award from the Association of Healthcare Journalists. Her first book, War Hospital, is about medical professionals under siege during the genocide in Srebrenica, Bosnia-Herzegovina.
emorial Medical was surrounded by floodwaters after the levees failed in New Orleans in 2005, drowning one of America’s great cities. Within hours, all power would fail. The heat rose. Rescue helicopters began arriving. They transported one or two patients at a time, but there were around 250 patients and 2,000 staff and family members. Who should be rescued first? Five Days at Memorial is about what happens when disaster strikes and the systems our lives depend on fail at the moment we need them the most. It is a call to learn from the past and do better next time and there are no readers more capable of implementing these lessons than young people. This book transports students into the heart of a disaster scenario and makes them ask themselves: “What would I do?” They grapple with triage and end-of-life dilemmas, and face profound questions: Do exceptional times allow us to make exceptions to moral rules—or does a time of crisis call for an even deeper commitment to our fundamental values? The first half of the book recreates the events moment by moment from a variety of perspectives. The second half examines how the legal system and society adjudicates potentially criminal actions—in this case, the intentional hastening of patient deaths— when they take place outside of a normal context. As a teaching tool, Five Days at Memorial contains vital preparedness points for careers in health care, criminal justice, the law, journalism, business administration, environmental science, engineering, and sociology, among others. It reads quickly because of the strong narrative and novelistic pull. Extensive endnotes offer jumping-off points for students to expand their research, building on cross-disciplinary themes including ethical decision-making, disaster preparedness, resilience, leadership, and the history of American race relations. I’m a physician and neuroscientist by training. I’ve delivered humanitarian aid in disasters and conflict zones around the world. What I’ve learned in every disaster is that what matters most in the immediate crisis—when the systems fail, as they almost inevitably do—are the decisions and actions of regular people. Five Days at Memorial tells the story of one of the most gripping and fascinating real-life events I’ve ever reported on, but it also carries an important message: We all have a role to play in preparing for and responding to crises. Thinking through these decisions in advance will better prepare students for making tough choices in reality.

At some point during the last 100,000 years, humans began exhibiting traits and behavior that distinguished us from other animals, eventually creating language, art, religion, bicycles, spacecraft, and nuclear weapons all within a heartbeat of evolutionary time. Now, faced with the threat of nuclear weapons and the effects of climate change, it seems our innate tendencies for violence and invention have led us to a crucial tipping point. Where did these traits come from? Are they part of our species’ immutable destiny? Or is there hope for our species’ future if we change? With fascinating facts and his unparalleled readability, Diamond intended his book to improve the world that today’s students will inherit. Triangle Square’s The Third Chimpanzee for Young People is for them and the future they’ll help build. About the authors JARED DIAMOND is professor of geography at the University of California, Los Angeles. He has published more than 200 articles in Discover, Natural History, Nature, and Geo magazines. He is the author of several books including Guns, Germs, and Steel, which was awarded the Pulitzer Prize and has sold more than 1.5 million copies, the international bestseller Collapse, and the recently published The World Until Yesterday: What Can We Learn from Traditional Societies?
“Starting with the molecular clock as the dating register, human development is traced through the skeletal fossils, implements used, and recorded art. Human sexuality and aging is crisply explained, while those qualities that distinguish man from his closest relatives are clearly detailed. Chapters covering language, art, and agriculture highlight the differences. But human actions also cause problems as the text continues to look at the difficulties caused by overpopulation, erosion of habitat, decimation of species, and the evil consequences of war.” —R ITA HOOTS, NSTA R ECOMMENDS R EVIEW

ne day, when my twin sons were in middle school, they came home from school angry with me. I wasn’t aware of having done anything particular that day to arouse their wrath, and so I asked them what was the matter. They replied, “Our history teacher has assigned your book to our class to read. We haven’t looked at it yet, but we already know that it’s a bad book. Worst of all, our teacher is inviting you to come to school to talk to our class. We are going to be so embarrassed in front of our friends!” I duly arrived at my sons’ class, to find my sons sitting in the last row, with faces averted, huddled in uncomfortable postures, and obviously in agony from embarrassment. As I began to talk about my book, their classmates started asking questions and expressing increasingly lively interest. My sons gradually rotated to face forward, relaxed from their cramped posture, and began smiling. They were delighted that their classmates liked my book, and that they didn’t have to be ashamed of me. Since then, my sons have been among my strongest supporters, quick to denounce any criticism of my books. In fact, I have discovered, soon after publication of my first book for the public, that school students are among my most enthusiastic readers. Virtually every time that I give a public lecture, there is at least one school class that has come to hear me, ask questions, be photographed with me, and give me some memento that they had prepared. On reflection, I shouldn’t have been surprised at this happy outcome. The subjects of my books are whatever has seemed to me to be the biggest and most interesting unanswered question at that time. The style of my books is designed to make them readily understandable: because I grew up with a younger sister to whom I was constantly trying to explain things; and because my writing a book begins with trying to explain its subject matter clearly to myself, and then sharing my understanding with my readers. I’m delighted that my first book for the public, The Third Chimpanzee, is now being published in a format specifically aimed at young people. I hope that, in this new format, more young people than ever before will discover the excitement of the biggest and most challenging questions about science and history.

HOW TO TEACH YOUR CHILDREN SHAKESPEARE by Ken Ludwig Introduction by John Lithgow

ince my early teens, I’ve felt strongly about the value of Shakespeare, but it wasn’t until I became a father that I figured out how to share my passion with the people I love. One day, my daughter came home from
first grade spouting a line of Shakespeare—“I know a bank where the wild thyme blows” from A Midsummer Night’s Dream—and at that moment, a light bulb went off in my head. Broadway Books ★ TR ★ 978-0-307-95150-2 368pp. ★ $14.00/$17.00 Can. Exam Copy: $3.00 EB: 978-0-307-95151-9
Starting that weekend, I set up a routine. My daughter and I would spend two hours each week memorizing speeches from Shakespeare’s plays. We started with short passages from the comedies and, gradually, increased the
William Shakespeare’s plays are among the great bedrocks of Western civilization and contain the finest writing of the past 450 years. Many of the best novels, plays, poetry, and films in the English language produced since Shakespeare’s death in 1616—from Jane Austen to The Godfather—are heavily influenced by Shakespeare’s stories, characters, language, and themes. In a sense, his works are a kind of bible for the modern world, bringing us together intellectually and spiritually. Hamlet, Juliet, Macbeth, Ophelia, and a vast array of other singular Shakespearean characters have become the archetypes of our consciousness. Playwright Ken Ludwig devised his methods while teaching his own children, and his approach is friendly and easy to master. Beginning with memorizing short specific passages from Shakespeare’s plays, this method then instills children with cultural references they will utilize for years to come. Ludwig’s approach provides an explanation of the time period and the implications of Shakespeare’s diction as well as the invaluable lessons behind his words and stories. Colorfully incorporating the history of Shakespearean theater and society, How to Teach Your Children Shakespeare takes readers on an informed and adventurous journey through the world in which the Bard wrote. This book’s simple process allows parents and teachers to impart to children the wisdom of plays like A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Twelfth Night, Macbeth, and Romeo and Juliet.

length and complexity of the passages we studied. To my delight, my daughter took to it immediately, and the hours we spent learning Shakespeare together were some of the best family times of our lives. What I have tried to do in How to Teach Your Children Shakespeare is to offer parents and educators the techniques I developed over the years for my own children. So, for example, I explain the difficult words in each passage; I explain how to use the rhythm of the poetry to make learning easier; and I use the passages in each case as a window into the stories, characters, and moral

It will introduce them to the rich world of great literature, and it will give them academic confidence which they will use the rest of their lives. On a practical level, this will help them on tests and essays for school. More importantly, it will make them more moral human beings as they begin to see the world through a Shakespearean lens. or the past three decades, I have been working with adolescents around issues of physical health, reproductive health, healthy relationships, avoiding risky behavior, and making good choices in life. I have done this through two organizations I founded: The Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention (GCAPP) and The Jane Fonda Center for Adolescent Reproductive Health at Emory University School of Medicine. Last year, we expanded our work in Georgia to include nutrition and physical activity as a way to combat obesity. As a result, GCAPP now stands for The Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Power and Potential. Before moving to Georgia, I ran, for fifteen years, the Laurel Springs Children’s Camp in the mountains above Santa Barbara. Adolescence is the gateway to adulthood, a developmental stage in its own right (though not always understood as such) during which time a young person develops her/his identity and values. How well a person passes through this often challenging phase of life can play a significant part in how well they do as adults. Despite my privileges as the child of a famous, successful parent, I faced many challenges as an adolescent and perhaps this is one reason why I have always felt special compassion for young people. I have spent many years studying adolescence, meeting with experts, talking to teens—boys as well as girls. Three years ago I began writing this book. I wanted to include all that I have learned, a book that would be informative and accessible to teens. It includes information about many things I wish I had known as a teen, and information about things that today’s teenagers face that I never dreamed of—how to handle cyber bullying, the excessive influence of media, and much more. This is an unusual book because it doesn’t just address the developing body and sexuality, although those topics are covered in depth. The book also includes questions of self-concept, gender identity, what goes into a healthy relationship, how to know if you’re in a real one, and how to say “no.” I wrote this book to be a solid resource for teenagers, a book they can dip into whenever they are faced with a question or special concern, that they can read and refer back to again and again. That is my hope.

Regardless of how wealthy or poor their parents are, all black boys must confront and surmount the “achievement gap”: a divide that shows up not only in test scores, but in their social and emotional development, their physical well-being, and their outlook on life. As children, they score as high on cognitive tests as their peers, but at some point, the gap emerges. Why? This is the question Joe Brewster, M.D., and Michèle Stephenson asked when their own son, Idris, began struggling in a new school. As they filmed his experiences for their award-winning documentary American Promise, they met an array of researchers who had not only identified the reasons for the gap, but had come up with practical, innovative solutions to close it. Based on innovative research as well as the real stories of families grappling with these issues firsthand, Promises Kept ultimately offers both a unique study of a major social issue as well as a practical guide of workable solutions for parents and educators alike.

n this book we will share what we learned along our journey that helped us to support our son in fulfilling his promise. We also reached out to more than sixty of the most accomplished researchers in the nation, experts who are performing cutting-edge studies on a wide variety of issues that impact the intellectual, social, and emotional well-being of black boys. Indeed, a lot is known about how to create an environment in which black males will succeed. Within these pages we set forth ten parenting and educational strategies that researchers have discovered can assist parents, educators, and other members of their proverbial “Village”—aunties, uncles, neighbors, coaches, youth leaders, faith leaders, and others—to help black boys become the happy, healthy, well-educated, well-developed people they are capable of being. These ideas are intended to address both the achievement gaps captured by official government assessments such as the Nation’s Report Card and No Child Left Behind (NCLB) but also some of the gaps that lie beneath these gaps. We share these strategies through the lens of our personal experiences raising Idris and Miles and through the stories of other black parents and boys from many different backgrounds, including Tony, Stacey, and Seun. To protect their privacy, we have masked the identifying characteristics of most of these parents and children, except in the final chapter, where some activists and advocates asked us to use their real names. For similar reasons we do not include the names of the educators who have shared the joys, challenges, and heartbreaks they’ve experienced while teaching and co-parenting our sons. We do, however, credit the many academic and medical experts whose research and ideas have informed the strategies. Importantly, although they strongly impact the outcomes of black children’s lives, we will not delve into the social, political, economic or historical factors that have resulted in unearned privilege for some and unearned disadvantage for others, including depressed black male achievement. Experts ranging from Michelle Alexander, to Lisa Delpit, to Asa Hilliard III, to Jonathan Kozlow to Carter Woodson and some of the scholars we’ve interviewed can do a far better job of shedding light on these topics than we can. We encourage you to educate yourself. ~ We hope that you learn something in Promises Kept that helps you enhance a black boy’s environment, whether you are a parent, a grandparent, a teacher, a school superintendent, a coach, a faith leader, a tutor, the head of a nonprofit, a social service provider, or the president of a corporation. Together we can improve the life trajectories of many children and help them unleash their potential to transform our world.

From a leading science reporter at The New York Times comes a fascinating guide to what we really know about learning and memory today—and how we can apply it to our own lives. In How We Learn, author Benedict Carey sifts through decades of education research and landmark studies to uncover the truth about how our brains absorb and retain information. What he discovers is that, from the moment we are born, we are all learning quickly, efficiently, and automatically; but in our zeal to systematize the process we have ignored valuable, naturally enjoyable learning tools like forgetting, sleeping, and daydreaming. Is a dedicated desk in a quiet room really the best way to study? Can altering your routine improve your recall? Are there times when distraction is good? Is repetition necessary? Carey’s search for answers to these questions yields a wealth of strategies that make learning more a part of our everyday lives—and less of a chore. By road testing many of the counterintuitive techniques described in this book, Carey shows how we can flex the neural muscles that make deep learning possible. Along the way he reveals why teachers should give final exams on the first day of class, why it’s wise to interleave subjects and concepts when learning any new skill, and when it’s smarter to stay up late prepping for that presentation than to rise early for one last cram session. The brain is not like a muscle, at least not in any straightforward sense. It is something else altogether, sensitive to mood, to timing, to circadian rhythms, as well as to location and environment. It doesn’t take orders well, to put it mildly. If the brain is a learning machine, then it is an eccentric one. In How We Learn, Benedict Carey shows us how to exploit its quirks to our advantage.

Introduction BROADEN THE MARGINS
was a grind. That was the word for it back in the day: The kid who sweated the details, who made flashcards. A striver, a grade-hog, a worker bee—that kid—and I can see him clearly now, almost 40 years later, bent over a textbook, squinting in the glow of a cheap desk lamp. I can see him early in the morning, too, up and studying at 5 o’clock: sophomore year, high school, his stomach on low boil because he can’t quite master—what? The quadratic formula? The terms of the Louisiana Purchase? The Lend-Lease policy, the mean value theorem, Eliot’s use of irony as a metaphor for . . . some damn thing? Never mind. It’s long gone, the entire curriculum. All that remains is the dread. Time’s running out, there’s too much to learn, and some of it is probably beyond reach. But there’s something else in there, too, a lowerfrequency signal that takes a while to pick up, like a dripping faucet in a downstairs bathroom: Doubt. The nagging sense of having strayed off the trail when the gifted students were arriving at the lodge, without breaking a sweat. Like so many others, I grew up believing that learning was all self-discipline: A hard, lonely climb up the sheer rock face of knowledge to where the smart people lived. I was driven more by a fear of falling than by anything like curiosity or wonder. That fear made for an odd species of student. To my siblings, I was Mr. Perfect, the serious older brother who got (almost) all As. To my classmates, I was the Invisible Man, too unsure of my grasp of the material I was studying to speak up. I don’t blame my young self, my parents or my teachers for this split personality. How could I? The only strategy any of us knew for deepening learning—drive yourself like a sled dog—works, to some extent; effort is the single most important factor in academic success. Yet that was the strategy I was already using. I needed something more, something different—and I felt it had to exist. The first hint of that it did, for me, came in the form of other students, those two or three kids in algebra or history who had—what was it?—a cool head, an ability to do their best without that hunted-animal look. It was as if they’d been told it was OK not to understand everything right away; that it would come in time; that their doubt was itself a valuable instrument. But the real conversion experience for me came later, when applying for college. College was the mission all along, of course. And it failed; I failed. I sent out a dozen applications and got shut down. All those years laboring before the mast and, in the end, I had nothing to show for it but a handful of thin envelopes and one spot on a waiting-list—to a college I attended for a year, before dropping out. What went wrong? I had no idea. I aimed too high, I wasn’t perfect enough, I choked on the SATs. No matter. I was too busy feeling rejected to think about it. No, worse than rejected. I felt like a chump. Like I’d been scammed by some bogus self-improvement cult, paid dues to a guru who split with the money. So, after dropping out, I made an attitude adjustment. I loosened my grip. I stopped sprinting. Broadened the margins, to paraphrase Thoreau. It wasn’t so much a grand strategy—I was a teenager, I couldn’t see more than three feet in front of my face—as a simple instinct to pick my head up and look around.

each long enough and you will hear it all, they say. And one thing you will quickly tire of hearing is the student complaint that they don’t like poetry because it’s too difficult. Of course, it’s easy to find plenty of poems to support their case. One reason poems can be difficult is that some poets design their poems that way. And there’s nothing we can do about that. But a more common reason is that poems are difficult because the reader has not read enough poems to know how a poem should be read. There are a number of things we can do about that. One of them is to teach poetry chronologically backwards. (Let’s face it, Beowulf is not a place to start.) Hook students on contemporary poems, especially ones that favor clear, direct language, then lead them gently into the works of earlier poets. Cure their poetry-phobia with new poems, then expose them to the voices of the past. Aimless Love is just one of many contemporary collections that would serve as a starting place for a student’s longer journey into the depth and historic breadth of poetry. But it’s my book, and why would I not take advantage of this opportunity to encourage teachers to delight their students first and instruct them later. This is one way to turn poetry from a school chore into a personal, and perhaps long-lasting, pleasure. And it’s based on a simple premise: the more poetry a student reads, the less “difficult” poetry will become.

In 1919, the 369th infantry regiment marched home triumphantly from World War I. They had spent more time in combat than any other American unit, never losing a foot of ground to the enemy, or a man to capture, and winning countless decorations. Though they had returned as heroes, this African American unit faced tremendous discrimination, even from their own government. The Harlem Hellfighters, as the Germans called them, fought courageously on—and off—the battlefield to make Europe, and America, safe for democracy. Based on rigorous research, this compelling graphic narrative from Max Brooks and acclaimed illustrator Caanan White chronicles the heroic 369th infantry, from the enlistment lines in Harlem to the training camp at Spartanburg, South Carolina to the trenches in France.

“Brooks and White tell a thrilling saga of noble perseverance, individual valor and sacrifice and collective triumph, showing how combat abroad in war contributed to the larger quest for civil rights at home. Informed by judicious historical research and vividly illustrated storytelling, this book itself is an historical ‘first,’ and is a major contribution to our understanding of Black History.” —HENRY LOUIS GATES, JR ., THE A LPHONSE FLETCHER UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR , H ARVARD UNIVERSITY
“An utterly fresh and shocking blend of storytelling and graphic art that takes us back to the global conflagration at the dawn of the last century and the heroic and outsized role brave African American soldiers played in turning the tide for the Allies.”

first learned of the Harlem Hellfighters from an Anglo-Rhodesian named Michael Furmanovsky when I was 11. Michael was working for my parents while getting his MFA in history from UCLA. He taught me about the British Empire, the Falklands War, Hiroshima, the Holocaust, and a host of other topics not covered in my fifth-grade Western civilization class. Of all his after-school lessons, the one that left the deepest impression was the story of a unit of American soldiers who weren’t allowed to fight for their country because of the color of their skin. To a white, privileged kid growing up on the west side of L.A. in the 1980s, that kind of prejudice was just inconceivable. When I confessed that I didn’t know about them, he assured me that I wasn’t alone. Ten years later I was an exchange student at the University of the Virgin Islands. The experience brought me back into the orbit of the Hellfighters when, while walking through an old cemetery, I noticed some graves from 1918. I wondered if they might be casualties of the Great War, maybe even members of the 369th. I decided to ask my professor of Virgin Islands history. He was an African-American from the mainland, and to call him passionate would be a laughable understatement. With his beard and spectacles and flaring dashiki, he would rail against the historical crimes committed by white men of Europe and North America. Most heinous was the erasure of black accomplishments by white historians. Colonization, he would tell us, begins with the mind, and the best (or worst) way to colonize a people is to bury their past. “There were no black soldiers in World War I.” That was his dismissive answer to my question about the graves from 1918. When I started to argue, even bringing up the name “Harlem Hellfighters,” he assured me that I must have been confused with the Tuskegee Airmen of World War II. I was shocked. Here was a scholar, a crusader, a thoughtful, driven man who’d made it his life’s mission to trumpet the glory of Africa and her diaspora, and HE didn’t know about the Harlem Hellfighters. I wish I could say that I decided then and there to write their story, but that would have to wait for nearly another decade. In 2006, I began collaborating with Avatar Press on a graphic companion to my first book, The Zombie Survival Guide. I learned very quickly how different comic book writing was from prose, but how similar it could be to movie scripts. I also realized that comics presented a forum for telling very visual stories without the cumbersome budget of movies or television. It seemed the ideal medium for telling the story of the Harlem Hellfighters. It’s now been close to six years since I began working with William Christensen of Avatar Press and the amazingly talented artist Caanan White. And now it’s time to share this heroic regiment’s story of courage, honor, and heart. I hope that you and your students are as captivated by it as I have been.

When out-of-shape IT technician Roen Tan woke up and started hearing voices in his head, he naturally assumed he was losing it. He wasn’t. He now has a passenger in his brain—an ancient alien life-form called Tao, whose race crash-landed on Earth before the first fish crawled out of the oceans. Now split into two opposing factions—the peace-loving, but under-represented Prophus, and the savage, powerful Genjix—the aliens have been in a state of civil war for centuries. Both sides are searching for a way off-planet, and the Genjix will sacrifice the entire human race, if that’s what it takes. Meanwhile, Roen is having to train to be the ultimate secret agent. Like that’s going to end up well… “Tipping his hat to both science fiction novels and comic books, Chu delivers a narrative that is at times pulse-pounding, laughout-loud funny and thoughtful. Part James Bond, part Superman, part Orphanage. There’s something here for everyone.” —MYKE COLE, AUTHOR OF CONTROL POINT AND FORTRESS FRONTIER
“Just your usual ‘I’ve got an immensely wise alien in my head who wants me to become an international man of mystery’ story. Which is to say, a page-turning homage to other classic SF like Hal Clement’s Needle. Recommended.” —STEVEN G OULD, AUTHOR OF THE JUMPER SERIES

riting The Lives of Tao transformed me. You see, I wanted to be an author (or a veterinarian) ever since I read The 101 Dalmatians once a day every day for an entire summer in third grade. My parents had other plans though, and steered me toward what they considered “stable” fields. By high school, I was determined. When it came time to pick a concentration, I told my father that I was going to be an English major (just like him) so I could become a novelist. His response to me was, “It’s too hard. Your life will suffer.” I listened to him, buried my dream, and took the practical route, studying business and science and worked a safe nine-to-five job. It felt completely wrong. After nearly twenty years of corporate droning and feeling lost, I finally opened Word and laid down a sentence on the blank screen. After many late nights and early mornings, I produced this little yellow book with the tag line: “There’s a hero inside every one of us.” The book, The Lives of Tao, is about Roen Tan, an out-of-shape loser, and the alien who inhabits him. The alien needs a secret agent to fight a war over humanity’s evolution. And Roen needs to get in shape, learn a stiff jab, find love, and ultimately discover his inner hero. Now, Roen and I are nothing alike, except for our deep love for pizza and our hatred of jogging (okay, maybe we’re a little bit alike), but I’d like to think that we did this journey together. In writing this book, I chronicled a lost soul who found himself through hard work, dedication, encouragement, and not a small amount of whining to finally become the person he always wanted to be. Okay, maybe we’re a lot alike. At first, I didn’t realize how much my idea of self-improvement resonated with my readers. Then I started seeing reviewers saying how reading The Lives of Tao encouraged them to work out and try new things. Then one day, I got a message from a guy on Reddit. He bought the book the day before the 2013 Colorado Wildfire. It was the only entertainment he had at the Red Cross Shelter after the fire consumed his home. This is what he wrote: Let me start by saying the theme of self-improvement in the beginning of the book hits much harder when your only remaining worldly possessions are the clothes on your back and the book you left in your car. I know it is cliché to point to a single book and say “That book changed my life”, but during and after the fire it was the only thing holding me back from complete despair. Your book helped inspire me to move on and try things I would have never considered before the fire. I can honestly state I believe I am a better person because of it. Now, I know I’m not a hero but I sure felt like one when I read that. But then again heroes manifest in many different ways, and in unlikely places. There might not be a hero inside every one of us, but we’ll never know until we try, right?

Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. Yet he spends his life willingly, knowing that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children. But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and lush wilds spread across the planet. Darrow—and Reds like him—are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class. Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity’s overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society’s ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies . . . even if it means he has to become one of them to do so.

Chapter 1 HELLDIVER
he first thing you should know about me is I am my father’s son. And when they came for him, I did as he asked. I did not cry. Not when the Society televised the arrest. Not when the Golds tried him. Not when the Grays hanged him. Mother hit me for that. My brother Kieran was supposed to be the stoic one. He was the elder, I the younger. I was supposed to cry. Instead, Kieran bawled like a girl when Little Eo tucked a haemanthus into Father’s left workboot and ran back to her own father’s side. My sister Leanna murmured a lament beside me. I just watched and thought it a shame that he died dancing but without his dancing shoes. On Mars there is not much gravity. So you have to pull the feet to break the neck. They let the loved ones do it. I smell my own stink inside my frysuit. The suit is some kind of nanoplastic and is hot as its name suggests. It insulates me toe to head. Nothing gets in. Nothing gets out. Especially not the heat. Worst part is you can’t wipe the sweat from your eyes. Bloodydamn stings as it goes through the headband to puddle at the heels. Not to mention the stink when you piss. Which you always do. Gotta take in a load of water through the drinktube. I guess you could be fit with a catheter. We choose the stink. The drillers of my clan chatter some gossip over the comm in my ear as I ride atop the clawDrill. I’m alone in this deep tunnel on a machine built like a titanic metal hand, one that grasps and gnaws at the ground. I control its rockmelting digits from the holster seat atop the drill, just where the elbow joint would be. There, my fingers fit into control gloves that manipulate the many tentacle-like drills some ninety meters below my perch. To be a Helldiver, they say your fingers must flicker fast as tongues of fire. Mine flicker faster. Despite the voices in my ear, I am alone in the deep tunnel. My existence is vibration, the echo of my own breath, and heat so thick and noxious it feels like I’m swaddled in a heavy quilt of hot piss. A new river of sweat breaks through the scarlet sweatband tied around my forehead and slips into my eyes, burning them till they’re as red as my rusty hair. I used to reach and try to wipe the sweat away, only to scratch futilely at the faceplate of my frysuit. I still want to. Even after three years, the tickle and sting of the sweat is a raw misery. The tunnel walls around my holster seat are bathed a sulfurous yellow by a corona of lights. The reach of the light fades as I look up the thin vertical shaft I’ve carved today. Above, precious helium-3 glimmers like liquid silver, but I’m looking at the shadows, looking for the pitvipers that curl through the darkness seeking the warmth of my drill. They’ll eat into your suit too, bite through the shell and then try to burrow into the warmest place they find, usually your belly, so they can lay their eggs. I’ve been bitten before. Still dream of the beast—black, like a thick tendril of oil. They can get as wide as a thigh and long as three men, but it’s the babies we fear. They don’t know how to ration their poison. Like me, their ancestors came from Earth, then Mars and the deep tunnels changed them.

THE MARTIAN

A Novel
ANDY WEIR
by Andy Weir

hen I wrote The Martian, I didn’t mean to craft a thriller that could double as a science textbook— but to some extent, that’s what happened.
The story revolves around a lone astronaut named Mark Watney
who is stranded on Mars. He faces countless trials and tribulations in his increasingly desperate attempts to survive. As a science dork, I wanted to make sure everything in the book was as accurate as it could be. I wanted Broadway Books ★ TR ★ 978-0-553-41802-6 384pp. ★ $15.00/$18.00 Can. ★ Exam Copy: $3.00 EB: 978-0-8041-3903-8 Reading Level: 6
to back up Mark’s solutions with hard numbers. As a result, many parts of the book are basically deadly word problems based on what Mark must do to survive. His life becomes a series of challenges in chemistry, physics, astronomy, and math. Because the book is so heavy on science, I had to make the reader
The Martian, by debut science fiction novelist Andy Weir, is a survival story about an astronaut who gets left behind on the red planet when his crew believes him to be dead. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate, Mark finds himself stranded on Mars and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won’t have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old “human error” are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark isn’t ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?
“A book I just couldn’t put down! It has the very rare combination of a good, original story, interestingly real characters and fascinating technical accuracy.” —A STRONAUT CHRIS H ADFIELD, COMMANDER OF THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION AND AUTHOR OF A N ASTRONAUT’S GUIDE TO LIFE ON EARTH
“Weir has crafted a relentlessly entertaining and inventive survival thriller, a MacGyver-trapped-on-Mars tale that feels just as real and harrowing as the true story of Apollo 13.” —ERNEST CLINE, AUTHOR OF R EADY PLAYER ONE
ANDY WEIR was first hired as a programmer for a national laboratory at age fi fteen and has been working as a software engineer ever since. He is also a lifelong space nerd and a devoted hobbyist of subjects like relativistic physics, orbital mechanics, and the history of manned spaceflight. The Martian is his first novel.

from wandering off into long explanations of minutiae and resist the urge to brag to the reader about every detail of every solution. I did a lot of work to solve these problems in a physically accurate way, and I really wanted the reader to know—but most people aren’t interested in a 5-page dissertation about the energy required to freeze-separate carbon dioxide from oxygen. That balancing act was the biggest challenge I faced. And I think it turned out alright. Although I did brag a little. I love science for its own sake, but I know I’m atypical. And I think—or hope—that a book like The Martian can provide a perspective that helps students see just how cool science can be. A physics or chemistry puzzle that might be boring in the abstract suddenly becomes much more engaging

once it’s critical to saving someone’s life. Science is a tool we use to solve problems or make our lives better. The allure is in what you can do with it. I hope to make readers enjoy science just as much as I do. My favorite fan-mail is the kind that says “I don’t usually like science, but…”
