Editor’s Note Dear Educator, Stop me if you’ve heard this one: How are you handling the technology shift? Please, don’t run away! I feel your pain . . . and I think I can help. I don’t know about you, but it seems as though I cannot attend an educational conference, read a teacher blog, or even open a newspaper without finding an article that struggles with this question. And the Random House Academic team is as guilty as everyone else! This past summer we put this question to a select group of educators who shared their time and energy with us for an active breakfast roundtable discussion in our NYC headquarters. While most acknowledged a strong desire to engage students with the variety of tools available, all agreed that no one methodology or approach is the clear answer. Rather, it is clear that this is a time of trial and error. However, amidst all of this uncertainty and even confusion, one fact remains: there has never been a greater demand for varied content as there is now. If one thing is clear to us, it is this: our responsibility as a 21st century publisher is to offer you, the educator, the books you wish to teach, in any format you prefer. It is with this mission in mind that I share with you our 2012 Language Arts and Social Studies Catalog. Not only will you find information about new books, but also links to ancillary resources freely available for downloading on our website and blog. These resources—including teacher’s guides, video clips, book trailers, special messages from authors—can enhance both your teaching of and students’ reading of books. We’ve also made sure to indicate all the different formats available for each book, and we’ve identified books that are ideal for reluctant readers with this logo: . In addition to our commitment to you, the educator, we are equally committed to—and proud of!—our authors. Wes Moore (The Other Wes Moore, see page 35) graced the cover of Time magazine this past summer as one of five featured veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq who have launched ambitious and creative service projects back home. You can read Wes’s message to educators at: http://tinyurl.com/4jbv4ye. Since its publication in hardcover almost two years ago, teachers and students can’t stop talking about Rebecca Skloot’s The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, now available in paperback (see page 18). Check out the classroom poster for the book, which you will find at the back of the catalog. And last but certainly not least, we’ve compiled a list of our recent ALA Alex Awardtm-winning books, found on page 2—make sure your school library has them all! So just how are you and your school handling the technology shift? Send me an email at kkaneta@randomhouse.com, post a comment to our blog, www.rhimagazine.com, or share your thoughts on our Facebook and Twitter pages and let us know. While we may not have the answer, we couldn’t be more excited to be able to take this journey with you. Here’s to a great year!
Sincerely,

The Oxford Project Text by Stephen G. Bloom Photographed by Peter Feldstein
In 1984, photographer Peter Feldstein set out to photograph every single resident of his town, Oxford, Iowa (pop. 676). Twenty years later, Feldstein decided to do it again. This time, he went with writer Stephen G. Bloom in search of the same Oxford residents Feldstein had originally shot two decades earlier. Face after face, story after story, what quietly emerges is a living composite of a quintessential Midwestern community. From award-winning writer David Mitchell comes a sinewy, meditative novel of boyhood on the cusp of adulthood and the old on the cusp of the new. Black Swan Green tracks a single year in what is, for thirteenyear-old Jason Taylor, the sleepiest village in muddiest Worcestershire in a dying Cold War England, 1982. Author Spotlight Alan Bradley
and the Flavia de Luce series
Flavia de Luce has a passion for poisons.
First Book in the Series
Picture an ancient country house somewhere in England. The year is 1950. Picture a girl who lives there with her most eccentric family. Her name is Flavia de Luce—and she’s almost eleven. Picture a long-abandoned Victorian chemistry laboratory; no one ever goes there but Flavia. Put them all together and you’ll have a deliciously original approach to detective fiction.
The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie A Flavia de Luce Mystery A YALSA Best Book for Young Adults
In his wickedly brilliant first novel, Debut Dagger Award winner Alan Bradley introduces one of the most singular and engaging heroines in recent fiction: eleven-year-old Flavia de Luce, an aspiring chemist with a passion for poison. It is the summer of 1950—and a series of inexplicable events has struck Buckshaw, the decaying English mansion that Flavia’s family calls home. “I loved The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie. I have put it in rotation in my 7th grade classroom library and even a few of my higher level readers have enjoyed the book. It’s hard to find a good mystery book to put on the shelves for them to read. My girls seemed to be impressed the most with the female lead solving the case and her knowledge of science. I would definitely recommend this book for summer reading.” —Megan Brown, Scott Middle School, H ammond, IN Bantam ★ TR ★ 978-0-385-34349-7 416pp. ★ $15.00/NCR ★ Exam Copy: $3.00

In 1986, Henry Lee, a Chinese American widower, comes upon a crowd gathered outside the Panama Hotel, once the gateway to Seattle’s Japantown. It has been boarded up for decades, but now a new owner has made an incredible discovery: the belongings of Japanese families left behind when they were rounded up and sent to internment camps during World War II. As Henry looks on, memories take him back to the 1940s. At the height of the war, Henry meets Keiko Okabe, a young Japanese American student, at the exclusive Rainier Elementary. They forge a friendship—and an innocent love—that transcends the long-standing prejudices of their Old World ancestors. After Keiko and her family are evacuated to the internment camps, she and Henry are left only with the hope that the war will end and that their promise to each other will be kept. Decades later, Henry tries to make sense of the past and confront the choices he made. Set during one of the most conflicted and volatile times in American history, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet is an extraordinary story of commitment and enduring hope. In Henry and Keiko, Jamie Ford has created an unforgettable portrait of a couple whose story teaches us of the power of forgiveness and the human heart.

“Jamie Ford’s first novel explores the ageold conflicts between father and son, the beauty and sadness of what happened to Japanese Americans in the Seattle area during World War II, and the depths and longing of deep-heart love. An impressive, bitter, and sweet debut.” —Lisa See, bestselling author of Snow Flower and the Secret Fan
“Ford expertly nails the sweet innocence of first love, the cruelty of racism, the blindness of patriotism, the astonishing unknowns between parents and their children, and the sadness and satisfaction at the end of a life well lived. The result is a vivid picture of a confusing and critical time in American history.” —Library Journal
About the Author Jamie Ford is an award-winning short-story writer, an alumnus of the Squaw Valley Community of Writers, and a survivor of Orson Scott Card’s Literary Boot Camp. Having grown up near Seattle’s Chinatown, he now lives in Montana with his wife and children.

I
knew that my novel, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, was making its way onto highschool reading lists when curious emails began popping up in my inbox. They tended to go something like this: “Um, you know, your book, Motel on the Corner of Sweet and Sour—dude, it’s like my favorite novel of all time!! And I’m kinda wondering if you could, like, answer these twelve questions for me? :P” (In my mind, I always hear this question coming from a nasally, voice-cracking, pre-pubescent 14-year-old boy wearing a Hot Topic hoodie with his ear buds in, listening to “Bring Me the Horizon”).
And just like that, I was suddenly someone’s homework. Right up there with Of Mice and Men, the Pythagorean Theorem, and building dioramas out of old shoe-boxes and craftpaper. To be honest, I wasn’t entirely sure how my novel would be received. So then I asked myself why so many students embrace books like The Catcher in the Rye and To Kill a Mockingbird—because they’re amazing novels? Sure. But moreover, these are books with young protagonists. They offer voices that are readily absorbed by the intrepid imaginations of young adults. Now that I’ve given talks at dozens of schools—from inner-city New York high schools to well-heeled, private academies in tony California suburbs—I’m convinced that students relate well to grown-up problems and ethical dilemmas. But would my young characters be able to navigate those neural, critical, Twitter-worthy pathways? In talking to students, in person, via email, Skype, and on Facebook, the consensus seems to be: LIKE. Which is no small honor. And now I get emails like this:
“This is the first time that I actually enjoyed a book I was forced to read.”
“This is my all-time favorite novel. :)”
Or the occasional, “I cried my eyes out. (Sob!)”
Who knew that modern teenagers would relate so well to a Chinese boy falling in love with a Japanese girl during WWII, or that a story about the Japanese Internment would affect a generation that has grown up in a post-9/11 world? The notion still amazes me— it’s something that I never planned or anticipated. But it’s a joy to behold, requests for homework help and all. Peace activist and co-founder of the Enough Project, John Prendergast is known as a champion of human rights in Africa. But the not-so-public face of Prendergast is the life he has led as a Big Brother to Michael Mattocks. Unlikely Brothers is an inspiring book that brings together the dissimilar lives of Prendergast and Mattocks, and reveals the importance of mentorship. The book raises many questions including what compassion looks like, the implications for indifference, and the challenges of commitment.
“Unlikely Brothers is an unlikely book, two interweaving stories filled with loss, tenderness and hope. John Prendergast’s and Michael Mattocks’ journeys— together and apart—should resonate for all of us, a searching for our place in the world, a yearning for friendship and connections.” —A lex Kotlowitz, author of There Are No Children Here and Never a City So R eal

On the Importance of Mentorship Michael Mattocks, my little brother, knew that I had written books before. One day he got the idea that we should write a book together about our lives. Once we figured out how we could frame the story, Michael and I realized the gravity of what we were trying to do. So we really dove in, going back to our pasts, interviewing people who would remember details, including former teachers of ours, and asking each other many questions—trying to get to the bottom of what happened and why. And we did a lot of self-reflection, to understand ourselves and the kind of impact our relationship had on each other’s lives. It has been an amazing journey. This book is about two guys who decide to be brothers, one twenty years old and the other seven. We both were traumatized by major father issues (one through emotional abuse and the other through absence). We both gravitated toward violence (one toward war zones in Africa, and the other to the drug world of Washington, D.C.). As the years go by, we swooped in and out of each other’s lives, whenever I was in D.C., but slowly disconnected as we disappeared into our respective worlds of Africa and the D.C. streets. Somehow, we made our way back to each other, and the effect we have had on each other is not easily discernible but extremely significant to both of our paths to redemption. Michael wrote this book because he wanted to show other young people that no matter what the odds, what kind of hole you find yourself in, you can overcome it, and the help of a mentor can make all the difference. Michael and I both believe that the impact our relationship continues to have on each other is irreplaceable. For all educators, I hope you realize the importance your role has on your students, not just to teach them math or science, but to be a constant active role model for success in a very challenging world. At the same time, I hope you find yourself inspired by a particular student or group of students—as I most definitely am by Michael. I would also encourage you to show your students that they too can be mentors. Even kids who come from economically deprived backgrounds or feel they have nothing can find confidence they never knew they had in helping out someone else—whether it be helping a younger sibling, forming a “big brother/little brother” relationship, tutoring, mentoring, volunteering, or babysitting. They will see how much they truly have to give, and that knowledge can go such a long way in forming their own paths in life. Some days I worried about how my family would react to this book, as did Michael with his family. But on balance we felt compelled to tell everything that happened. At a minimum, we hope it will show prospective mentors that if we could do it, ANYONE could. At best, maybe we can inspire readers to take a chance, to get involved, to make a difference. —John Prendergast John Prendergast wrote Unlikely Brothers with his “little brother” Michael Mattocks.

As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive. A spine-tingling fantasy illustrated with haunting vintage photography, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children will delight adults, teens, and anyone who relishes an adventure in the shadows.

he inspiration for a story can come from almost anywhere. I learned this first-hand a few years ago when I was inspired by some evocative old snapshots I found at a flea market. I wanted to know more about the people in them, but the photos were anonymous —long-disconnected from whoever had taken and discarded them—so instead I created their stories myself. The result was my first novel, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. It’s enjoyed some remarkable success, especially for a book from a debut novelist—there’s even a movie in the works! None of this would be happening if I hadn’t let a handful of musty pictures tell me a story. Stories are everywhere; it’s just a matter of tuning our ears to listen for them. Given the way Miss Peregrine is told, with the photos I found woven through the narrative, it’s proven to be a fascinating conversation-starter for students and teachers of creative writing. Students can easily find photos of their own to use as writing prompts, either on the Internet or, better yet, in the attics and closets of parents and grandparents. (I discovered that it’s nearly impossible to write about old photographs without becoming interested in their history. There’s something fascinating about the immediacy of a photograph, no matter how old it is; though a picture might have been taken a hundred years ago, it is always, in some sense, now.) The story itself, though it takes some decidedly fantastical turns, has one foot firmly rooted in history. I’m a firm believer that the real world is more dramatic than any story we can make up about it, and when writing I try to draw upon real events whenever I can. The experience of European Jews during World War II is central to the book, as is that of British civilians living under the terrifying threat of German bombing raids. Though the world of the peculiar children is fantasy, it exists alongside and frequently intersects with our own. In many ways, Miss Peregrine is a story about tolerance. The peculiar children are people who’ve been shunned, persecuted and forced into hiding because of their differentness— but it is also this differentness that enables them. Though the children have special abilities—one can make fire with her bare hands, another can levitate, yet another is blessed with incredible strength—they are not superheroes. The levitating girl, for instance, must wear heavy, leaden shoes to prevent her from floating away. A prophetic boy named Horace is plagued by terrible dreams. Their peculiarities, like the gifts of we “normal” people, exist along a spectrum of ability and disability. Above all, my goal was to write a riveting story. I’ve received e-mails from hundreds of readers telling me they “couldn’t put it down,” including many from teenagers who say they rarely read books of their own volition, but finished Miss Peregrine in just a few days. (Those are my favorites.) If my book can turn even a few reluctant readers on to fiction, I’ll be very happy. With your help, though, I hope it can reach many more. —Ransom Riggs

With the same dazzling imagination and love of language that have made Salman Rushdie one of the great storytellers of our time, Luka and the Fire of Life revisits the magic-infused, intricate world he first brought to life in the modern classic Haroun and the Sea of Stories. “You’ve reached the age at which people in this family cross the border into the magical world. It’s your turn for an adventure—yes, it’s finally here!” So says Haroun to his younger brother, twelve-year-old Luka. The adventure begins one beautiful starry night in the land of Alifbay, when Luka’s father, Rashid, falls suddenly into a sleep so deep that nothing and no one can rouse him. To save him from slipping away entirely, Luka embarks on a journey through the world of magic with his loyal companions, Bear, the dog, and Dog, the bear. Together they encounter a slew of fantastical creatures, strange allies, and challenging obstacles along the way—all in the hope of stealing the Fire of Life, a seemingly impossible and exceedingly treacherous task.

“Luka and the Fire of Life is a beautiful book. Well-written (obviously), imaginative (astonishingly so) and wonderful in the way it builds heartfelt magical fiction for kids who love video games: It’s like a bridge, built between generations, fabulous and strange and from the heart.” —Neil Gaiman
“This entertaining fable, dedicated to Rushdie’s second son, is a stand-alone sequel to Haroun and the Sea of Stories (1990). . . . Readers will enjoy the silly puns and fun magic-carpet ride, and should appreciate the literary in-jokes and wry humor. Although the tone is fairly lighthearted overall, the triumphant finale is a fantastic tribute to the rich interior world of the storyteller and the transformative power of his art.” —Booklist

Chapter One: The Terrible Thing That Happened on the Beautiful Starry Night
here was once, in the city of Kahani, in the land of Alifbay, a boy named Luka who had two pets, a bear named Dog and a dog named Bear, which meant that whenever he called out, “Dog!” the bear waddled up amiably on his hind legs, and when he shouted, “Bear!” the dog bounded toward him, wagging his tail. Dog, the brown bear, could be a little gruff and bearish at times, but he was an expert dancer, able to get up onto his hind legs and perform with subtlety and grace the waltz, the polka, the rhumba, the wah-watusi, and the twist, as well as dances from nearer home, the pounding bhangra, the twirling ghoomar (for which he wore a wide mirror-worked skirt), the warrior dances known as the spaw and the thang-ta, and the peacock dance of the south. Bear, the dog, was a chocolate Labrador, and a gentle, friendly dog, though sometimes a bit excitable and nervous; he absolutely could not dance, having, as the saying goes, four left feet, but to make up for his clumsiness he possessed the gift of perfect pitch, so he could sing up a storm, howling out the melodies of the most popular songs of the day, and never going out of tune. Bear, the dog, and Dog, the bear, quickly became much more than Luka’s pets. They turned into his closest allies and most loyal protectors, so fierce in his defense that nobody would ever have dreamed of bullying him when they were nearby, not even his appalling classmate Ratshit, whose behavior was usually out of control. This is how Luka came to have such unusual companions. One fine day when he was twelve years old, the circus came to town—and not just any circus, but the GROF, or Great Rings of Fire, itself; the most celebrated circus in all of Alifbay, “featuring the Famous Incredible Fire Illusion.” So Luka was at first bitterly disappointed when his father, the storyteller Rashid Khalifa, told him they would not be going to the show. “Unkind to animals,” Rashid explained. “Once it may have had its glory days but these days the GROF has fallen far from Grace.” The Lioness had tooth decay, Rashid told Luka, and the Tigress was blind and the Elephants were hungry and the rest of the circus menagerie was just plain miserable. The Ringmaster of the Great Rings of Fire was the terrifying and enormous Captain Aag, a.k.a. Grandmaster Flame. The animals were so scared of the crack of his whip that the Lioness with toothache and the blind Tigress continued to jump through hoops and play dead and the skinny Elephants still made Pachyderm Pyramids for fear of angering him, for Aag was a man who was quick to anger and slow to laugh. And even when he put his cigarsmoking head into the Lioness’s yawning mouth, she was too scared to bite it off just in case it decided to kill her from inside her belly.

In this electrifying debut, Stephen Spignesi reinvents the psychological thriller with a chilling tale of mounting intensity. Ingeniously crafted and crackling with suspense, here is a puzzle within a puzzle, at the center of which stands a hauntingly enigmatic young woman whose story will challenge everything you think you know. . . . Six employees are killed in the euthanasia room of the animal shelter where they worked. Only one young woman survives—the most unlikely of cold-blooded killers. A lover of animals, Tory Troy is petite, brainy, and gifted with a sharp sense of humor. What could have provoked her to murder her coworkers? That’s the question court-assigned psychiatrist Baraku Bexley is determined to answer. Starting in the Connecticut mental hospital where she’s confined, Dr. Bexley will interview Tory and those who thought they knew her. For between the person Tory seems to be and the horrific crimes she’s accused of committing lies a divide so dark and deep that no one, not Bexley, not the reader, will see the shattering truth until the final page.
“An ingenious debut, largely talk, follows a moral and spiritual light as it rises out of darkness in a mental hospital. The main dialogue takes place between Tory and psychiatrist Dr. Baraku Bexley, who looks into her past with her . . . . Sucks you in, then delivers a wildly weird and unforeseeable ending.” —K irkus R eviews
“Tory Troy emerges as a smart, intuitive, sometimes funny woman who loves animals (and has a credible rationale for her job, which is described in detail) and who seems to harbor no particular ax to grind against her fellow employees. So what pushed her over the edge? Wisely, Spignesi allows readers to think about that on their own.” —Booklist
“Engrossing. . . . An often fascinating narrative carried out in dialogue form. . . . Tory’s writings and flashbacks heighten the tension.” —Publishers Weekly

Dialogues Will Get Students Talking (and Writing)!
W
hen Bantam first published my novel Dialogues in hardcover in 2005, it was described as a “reinvention of the psychological thriller.” Told mostly in dialogue, I wrote Dialogues as a compelling drama about a young animal shelter worker named Tory Troy who one day murders her six co-workers in the animal shelter gas chamber used to euthanize sick and unwanted animals. Tory took a job at the animal shelter to help unwanted animals find good homes. She ended up being trained for and working as an animal euthanasia technician. One day, after the deadly gas had done its job, she opens the chamber door and sees . . . a kitten who didn’t die. This begins a journey for Tory that ultimately results in a decision she alone can make: whether to live or die. In addition to writing, I am also a Practitioner in Residence and Professor of English at the University of New Haven in Connecticut. A few years after its initial publication, I began assigning Dialogues to my English Composition and Literature students as a novel to read for the semester. I also gave them Dialogues assignments, some culled from the “Reader’s Guide to Dialogues,” written by Bantam for reading groups when the book was first published. The most important Dialogues-related assignment was a 1,000word analytical essay in which the students had to analyze the symbolism, foreshadowing, word choice, style, tone, and all the other literary elements of the novel they had studied during the semester. The response from my students to reading, studying, and writing about Dialogues has been consistently and overwhelmingly positive. I realized that Dialogues is an eminently teachable novel, and that it can be appreciated on several levels. It is a captivating thriller with a page-turner appeal and a stunning twist ending. Plus it can be analyzed and deconstructed on a literary level. For example: • The protagonist, Tory Troy, is arrested and assigned a court-appointed psychiatrist, Dr. Baraku Bexley, who is given the task of determining if she’s fit to stand trial. All the “dialogues” between Tory and Dr. Bexley take place in a stark room of a psychiatric hospital. The hospital represents the prison of Tory’s mind, and the dialogues between her and Dr. Bexley are, in essence (and which we realize at the end of the novel), Tory talking to herself. • A jury is impaneled, and this is a symbol for Tory’s self-judgment; her ultimate attempt at redemption for working at a job as a euthanasia technician. • Some of Tory’s college writings are included in the novel. One novella in particular, The Baby’s Room, foreshadows the conclusion of the novel, and it has been consistently fascinating to me to see how many students recognize the fact that the novella is a replication “in miniature” of the complete Dialogues novel. Students greatly enjoy reading Dialogues—it is, after all, a contemporary thriller—and because the novel is so layered with subtext and literary elements suitable for student interpretation, when the book is eventually discussed in class, students respond eagerly to learning its secrets and talking about what things meant, what people said, and how the book ends. Dialogues is an excellent choice for adoption for college and high school English Composition and Literature courses. As part of the support for the book, I will provide to teachers who adopt the novel a detailed outline of the Dialogues lecture I personally deliver to my students every semester. —Stephen Spignesi

In this powerful, unforgettable memoir, acclaimed novelist Darin Strauss recounts a tragedy and its aftermath. In the last month of his high school career, just after turning eighteen, Strauss is behind the wheel of his father’s Oldsmobile, driving with friends, having “thoughts of mini-golf, another thought of maybe just going to the beach.” Then out of the blue: a collision that results in the death of a bicycling classmate and that shadows the rest of his life. In haunting, penetrating prose, Darin Strauss explores loss and guilt, maturity and accountability, hope and acceptance. The result is a staggering, uplifting tour de force.
“Darin Strauss has spent a good part of his adult life reliving, regretting and reflecting on a single, split-second incident. Half a Life is a starkly honest account of that fateful moment and his life thereafter . . . penetrating, thought-provoking.”

“At the center of this elegant, painful, stunningly honest memoir thrums a question fundamental to what it means to be human: What do we do with what we’ve been given? . . . What is truly exceptional here is watching a writer of fine fiction probe, directly, carefully and with great humility, the source from which his fiction springs.” —The New York Times Book R eview
“A book that inspires admiration, sentence by sentence. . . . This is a memoir in its finest form, a fully imagined and bittersweet book that transcends a single misstep.”
“With honesty and sensitivity, Strauss looks not only at how that fateful incident decades ago ended Celine’s young life, but also at how it greatly affected his. Out of undoubtedly complicated circumstances, he crafts a simple yet remarkable story about pain and guilt, maturity and responsibility, hope and understanding.”

hen I was 18, I was in a car accident: a girl swerved in front of my car, I couldn’t avoid her, and she died. I moved soon afterward, and so this crash and its aftermath made up the secret I carried around for 18 years. Until I wrote Half a Life.
40,000 die on U.S. roads every year. And with every accident, somebody walks away feeling he’s put on the executioner’s hood. That’s one reason Half a Life has resonated with so many people. But it’s not the only reason, I’ve come to realize. When I decided to write this story—the story of me and of the girl who died that day—I don’t think I understood how universal other people would find it; I was just writing what had happened to me. But very soon, I realized this story threw huge shadows. Excerpted in GQ and on This American Life, as well as in The Times of London, The Daily Mail (U.K.) and numerous other publications in the U.S. and around the world, Half a Life ended up having real valence for a great many people. I’ve received probably over a thousand emails from readers who have wanted to share their own stories: a man who blames himself because he didn’t take his mother’s threats seriously and therefore left for boarding school the day before her suicide; a number of soldiers back from Iraq and Afghanistan who are dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder; people who have suffered horrible personal loss; and, of course, many car accident survivors. Furthermore, I traveled the country with this book—even before it won the National Book Critics Circle Award for best memoir/autobiography of 2010—and at every reading I gave, someone invariably came up to me and shared a story of personal grief and guilt. At first, I didn’t know why they were opening up in this way: what did seeing one’s brother overdose have to do with my story? And why did this person want to tell me? When I was a kid, after the accident, I felt completely alone—suffering under a crushing guilt, even though everyone said I wasn’t at fault. The thing is, no one knows how to feel about guilt: people think if an official person—a policeman, a judge or reporter—says you weren’t at fault, it’ll be all right. What the book is about is: that’s not so. If you just accept what other people tell you to feel, it leads to your living half a life, with the other half covering something up. The point is, it turns out almost everybody has something in their past to feel guilt and/or grief about, whether they were culpable in their life-shaping event or not. It doesn’t have to be as dramatic as mine. (I was found blameless in my accident, but that didn’t stop the lawsuits from happening.) Everyone is worried about doing what appears to be right, rather than what is right for them. Until I wrote Half a Life, I found math personally treacherous—its A-to-B-to-C arrogance, its Boolean surety: I operated the car. The car hit the girl. A=C. I killed the girl. Algebra makes no allowances. Or maybe it does—when it leaves the workbook and enters our flesh-and-blood world. With this book I wrote what hurt; I looked it in the eye. And, for my readers, watching somebody work through those feelings has brought a kind of catharsis. This is the story I would have needed to read when I was 18. I wrote it in part for the girl who died—to show how much she’s touched every part of my life—but I wrote it for that teenage me too, and for other people who feel guilt and don’t know if they should. The lessons I learned are not glib, or very self-helpy. All the same, if one writes honestly and well about unwarranted guilt and how to overcome it, I think one can write a book that is self-helpful. —Darin Strauss For additional books, excerpts, and more, visit www.randomhouse.com/highschool

Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells—taken without her knowledge—became one of the most important tools in medicine. The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, they played a vital role in developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the effects of the atom bomb; helped lead to important advances like in vitro fertilization, cloning, and gene mapping; and have been bought and sold by the billions, with devastating consequences for her family. Now Rebecca Skloot takes us on an extraordinary journey, from the “colored” ward of Johns Hopkins Hospital in the 1950s to stark white laboratories with freezers full of HeLa cells, from Henrietta’s small, dying hometown of Clover, Virginia—a land of old wooden slave quarters, faith healings, and voodoo—to East Baltimore today, where Henrietta’s children, unable to afford health insurance, wrestle with feelings of pride, fear, and betrayal. Above all it is a human story of redemption for a family, torn by loss, and for a writer with a vision that would not let go.” —The Boston Globe
“Skloot narrates the science lucidly, tracks the racial politics of medicine thoughtfully, and tells the Lacks family’s often painful story with grace . . . I
first learned about HeLa cells and the woman behind them as a sixteen-year-old sitting in a basic biology class. I knew only fragments of her story, but those fragments inspired me to start asking questions—about science and mortality, bioethics, and how I’d feel if my own cells were used in research. I didn’t yet know that her cells had launched a multibillion-dollar industry while her children lived in poverty, or that the cells had had devastating consequences for the family. Henrietta’s story captures the imagination of students interested in any number of subjects, including the sciences, medicine, history, philosophy, law, bioethics, © Omar Quintero journalism, and creative writing. I’ve spoken about HeLa at schools around the country, where students are transfixed by the story. I tell them that if you could pile all the HeLa cells ever grown on a scale they would weigh more than one hundred fifty Empire State Buildings, and that HeLa has been fused with mouse cells to create Henrietta-mouse hybrid cells. It’s the stuff of science fiction, but it’s true, and students love it. Combine that with the story of Henrietta’s family—a tale about science, religion, race, and class—and students’ reactions are powerful.
During Q & As, the first question is usually, “Wasn’t it illegal to take her cells and use them in research without asking?” The answer is no—not in 1951, Courtesy of Gopal Murti and not in 2010. Today, most Americans have their tissue on file somewhere, as a result of routine blood tests or biopsies. And since the late sixties, when testing newborns for genetic diseases became required by law, each baby born in the United States has had blood taken, and those samples are often stored and used by scientists. This means that most students in this country have tissues of their own being used in research, and neither they nor their parents likely realize it. As a teacher, I always look for books that bring together the many disparate fields that students will study throughout their academic careers, and that allow them to explore the real-world consequences of intellectual discoveries. Other teachers tell me The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks does just that, bringing together themes of health, community, family, ethics, religion, science, storytelling, history, business, law, and humanity.

I can’t wait to find out. —Rebecca Skloot HeLa cells take on a different appearance depending on the type of microscope and dye used to see them

GB Tran is a young Vietnamese American artist who grew up distant from (and largely indifferent to) his family’s history. Born and raised in South Carolina as a son of immigrants, he knew that his parents had fled Vietnam during the fall of Saigon. But even as they struggled to adapt to life in America, they preferred to forget the past—and to focus on their children’s future. It was only in his late twenties that GB began to learn their extraordinary story. When his last surviving grandparents die within months of each other, GB visits Vietnam for their memorials and begins to learn the tragic history of his family, and of the homeland they left behind. In telling his family’s story, GB finds his own place in this saga of hardship and heroism. Vietnamerica is a visually stunning portrait of survival, escape, and reinvention—and of the gift of the American immigrants’ dream, passed on to their children. It is also an unforgettable story of family revelation and reconnection—and a new graphic-memoir classic.
“In Tran’s memoir of his parents’ life in Vietnam—and his own discovery of that story—theme, narrative, and art work together to create a deeply compelling graphic novel. Tran meditates on war, loss, and memory, but the overriding theme is the complexity, hardship, and reward of family life, a theme that finds full life in the author’s multi-layered narrative. . . . This novel could easily find a place in the classroom but its broad set of issues and graphic format should also appeal to a wide variety of teens.” —School Library Journal
“This will be called the MAUS for the Vietnam War, and for good reason. Similar premise: clueless American-born son of immigrants confronts the legacy of family pain predating his birth. Similar outcome: a kick-in-the-gut graphic novel. . . . Engaging, challenging, and disturbing, Tran’s family memoir belongs in all public and academic libraries.” —Library Journal (starred review)

When their mother catches their father with another woman, twelve-year-old Blessing and her fourteen-year-old brother, Ezikiel, are forced to leave their comfortable home in Lagos for a village in the Niger Delta, to live with their mother’s family. Without running water or electricity, Warri is at first a nightmare. But Blessing’s grandmother, wise and practical, soon becomes a beloved mentor, teaching her the ways of the midwife in rural Nigeria. Blessing is exposed to the horrors of genital mutilation and the devastation wrought on the environment by British and American oil companies. As Warri comes to feel like home, Blessing becomes increasingly aware of the threats to its safety, both from its unshakable but dangerous traditions and the relentless carelessness of the modern world. Tiny Sunbirds, Far Away is the witty and beautifully written story of one family’s attempt to survive a new life they could never have imagined, struggling to find a deeper sense of identity along the way.

“A sure-footed debut narrated by 12-year-old Blessing, a girl growing up too fast in the troubled Niger Delta.” —People M agazine
“[An] impressive debut. . . . Watson’s nuanced portrayal of daily life in Nigeria is peopled with flawed but tenacious characters who fight not only for survival but for dignity. Blessing is a wonderful narrator whose vivid impressions enliven Watson’s sensual prose.” —Publishers Weekly ( starred review)
“A memorable debut novel about a Nigerian girl’s coming of age.” —K irkus R eviews
“Confronting issues of race, class, and religion, this work ponders idealistic ignorance in a way that is reminiscent of Chinua Achebe’s No Longer at Ease. Watson’s story will appeal to readers of African and literary fiction.” —Library Journal

thor FROM the Au A Message
I
’ve never been very good at doing what I’m told. When I was told that writing novels should only ever be a hobby, that having children would make it impossible to find time to write, that writing a novel was something I should never aim for, not really, I simply didn’t listen. I crept out of bed at 5 am and wrote, every day, even if I’d been up all night nursing a sick child, so tired my eyes were only half open. On those days, in fact, my writing was the best. I thought of my characters all the time and even dreamed of them. After a few months I had something to look at, some writing, words that might just one day turn into a novel. “You should write what you know,” said people, when they realized my dream was not going to disappear. “Write your life, stick to a simple story for your first book. Write an easy story.” Again, I didn’t listen. I fell in love with a man and his country: Nigeria. The story belonged in Nigeria, and to Blessing, a twelve-year-old Nigerian girl. I listened to the voice of my then thirteen-year-old, how she used language in nonsensical ways, how she saw the world around her. Blessing, my main character, began talking to me. I wrote about politics, gender, violence, religion, humanity. I asked questions and explored in my novel things that I didn’t understand and wanted answers to: race, culture, belonging, and identity, what it is to be human, how it feels to grow up too quickly. “Don’t visit that part of the world,” said friends, family, the foreign office, when they discovered what my story was becoming, where it belonged. “It’s too dangerous.” So I travelled. I stayed with family throughout Nigeria, and saw vibrant cities and sleepy villages, mountains, rivers, deserts, forests. I visited the Niger Delta, stood on the riverbank and watched the brightly coloured birds in the mangroves, and smelled the air, smoky, like a book unopened for a very long time. I listened to the local stories. And now people tell me that the novel is too difficult for younger readers. Too political. Too gritty. A younger audience will find the scenes of childbirth or violence, of love and loss, too traumatic. Young people in the U.S. like an easier story that doesn’t take them out of their comfortable world. Tiny Sunbirds, Far Away is too adult. The themes are too mature. I’m simply not going to listen. And, of course, you won’t either: you know what your students are capable of, you know that challenging them always brings out the best, and you believe, like I do, that a true education demands we broaden our perspective and jump out of our comfort zones.

While Mortals Sleep Unpublished Short Fiction
Marzi
by Kurt Vonnegut
by Marzena Sowa Illustrated by Sylvain Savoia
Smart, whimsical, and often scathing, the fiction of Kurt Vonnegut influenced a generation of American writers. In these previously unpublished gems, Vonnegut’s originality infuses a unique landscape of factories, trailers, and bars—and characters who pit their dreams and fears against a cruel and sometimes comically indifferent world.
“ . . . An engrossing picture of growing up in Communist Poland on the cusp of revolution. . . . Without being heavy-handed or sacrificing any of its singular charm, the book subtly invokes a comparison between the place of the children in society and that of the oppressed under authoritarian regimes.”

Vaclav & Lena: A Novel by Haley Tanner
The Homecoming of Samuel Lake A Novel
Vaclav and Lena seem destined for each other. They meet as children in an ESL class in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. Vaclav imagines their story unfolding like a fairy tale, but among the many truths to be discovered in Haley Tanner’s wondrous debut is that happily ever after is never a foregone conclusion.
by Jenny Wingfield
“The Homecoming of Samuel Lake recalls the worlds created in books such as To Kill a Mockingbird or The Lovely Bones. Teens who like those books will surely be attracted to this one because it draws from the same understanding of place and time, and features characters who stay with their readers.”

Professional Reading The New Cool A Visionary Teacher, His FIRST Robotics Team, and the Ultimate Battle of Smarts by Neal Bascomb
T
he New Cool is the astonishing and inspiring story of a team of high school seniors and their mentor, who come together—not to play a sport or exercise their athletic prowess—but rather to build a machine that will compete in the most heated, sophisticated robotics contest in the world. “Another feel-good melting-pot story? Yes, in a way. But don’t worry; this one is authentic, and it offers a lesson in how American kids can thrive when faced with daunting challenges. . . . The New Cool is effective in capturing the students’ loyalty, dedication and ingenuity. It is inspiring to see these kids work so hard and achieve a certain level of engineering expertise and high-school celebrity. . . . [The book] inevitably raises troubling questions about whether America can regain its leadership in science and engineering even with Mr. Kamen’s inventive approach.” —The Wall Street Journal

Feel-Bad Education: And Other Contrarian Essays on Children and Schooling by Alfie Kohn
A
rguing that our schools are currently in the grip of a “cult of rigor”—a confusion of harder with better that threatens to banish both joy and meaningful intellectual inquiry from our classrooms—Alfie Kohn issues a stirring call to rethink our priorities and reconsider our practices. Kohn’s latest wide-ranging collection of writings will add to his reputation as one of the most incisive thinkers in the field, who questions the assumptions too often taken for granted in discussions about education and human behavior. “Few scholars are more critical or more forthright about the problems with the U.S. educational system than Kohn. . . . A surprisingly accessible and at times witty educational policy expert.” —Library Journal
