LEGGINGS: THIS TOPIC REQUIRES COVERAGE BY MADDI DUKE AND LAUREN BUSH

It’s controversial, it’s comfortable, it’s a topic that gets any teenage girl frustrated...It’s leggings. The policy here at Bishop Kelley regarding leggings is typed out for any student to access in the yearly handbook. Though written out clearly, not everyone agrees with this policy. The policy reads, “Tunics or other cover-ups of appropriate length should be worn with leggings and tights.” BK girls have been quite vocal about their opinions towards this policy. “I think it’s fine, but I got in trouble when it was covering my rear,” Kimberly Koors (11) said. Kimmy, like most students, is sure her shirt covers what needs to be

covered, but to the faculty, this still is not enough. “Consider the appropriate length then to be just the same length of your skirt. No more than five inches from the knee,” Dean of Students, Jeff Pratt said. Some girls claim that this rule is sexist. “The boys never get in trouble because they don’t have the same rules we do,” Koors said. The administration looks at it a different way. “That is certainly not our intention. Obviously we just are trying to keep it classy, and promote a modest, appropriate dress code,” Pratt said. The main point is that what girls wear to school on free dress days should not take away or disrupt

anyone’s education. Style is always changing, and it just happens to be that leggings are in style at the moment. Therefore most every girl owns loads of leggings. Not only because they are in style, but they are super comfortable and practical. Although leggings are comfortable, this rule has girls feeling uncomfortable to show their style and wear what makes us happy in fear of getting pointed out in a crowded hallway and dragged by the arm into the main office to get stared at and measured. “Girls shouldn’t be penalized for something that shouldn’t be a big deal,” Leah Bilbrey (11) said. “And why miss class to change your clothes?

It’s ridiculous” Overall, the faculty and staff just want to encourage a modest, Catholic learning environment for their students, which is very reasonable. “Think the same length of your skirts. That way people aren’t getting in trouble, and they’re not frustrated,” Mr. Pratt said. The rule should just be the shirt we wear must cover our behind. It should not have to go down to our knees nearly. After all, it is a shirt, it is not intended to be a dress. Many have tried, few have succeeded, but overall the faculty and staff here at Bishop Kelley is not budging on their policy of modesty when it comes to leggings and other free dress attire.
