BK Takes miami, Oklahoma 8 Bishop Kelley students travel to Miami, Oklahoma for the Fall Mission Trip. BY ABBY NAGODE This year Mr. Daniel Bryan took eight students to Miami, Oklahoma for a service mission trip. Friday at 7:45a.m., they hit the road. Their first job was to work at GAR Cemetery. They raked leaves and cleaned up the graveyard to help get ready for the British Flyer Ceremony that happened at the cemetery on November 7. Later that day, the crew headed to The Harbor, the local homeless shelter in Miami, to help prepare, serve, and eat dinner with the people who lived there. “That was one of my favorite parts of the trip,” Leah Colon (12) said. The students stayed at the parish of the Sacred Heart in Miami, where Fr. Carl Kerkemeyer hosted the crew. Saturday morning, the students went down to the Miami Fairgrounds to help the parks and recreation crew. “We painted benches, bleachers, and poles, it was a lot of fun getting to help out the city of Miami,” Abby Nagode (12)
said. That night was Halloween, and Miami has something they do along Main Street called “Sweet Street.” Sweet Street is an event where local organizations and churches come together to set up games for the kids so they can get candy in a safe environment. Mr. Bryan and the students got to run a couple of games themselves. Seniors Leah Colon and Abby Nagode got to run the bean bag toss, along with the other six students who ran a few games of their own. Sunday morning was the last day of the Fall Mission Trip. Before they headed home, Mr. Bryan and the students helped out with Sacred Heart’s pancake breakfast after morning Mass. Once breakfast was all cleaned up, they packed up and headed back home. Overall, it was a successful weekend. After all, any weekend spent serving others is a weekend well spent.

Speech & debate BY: ABBY NAGODE One of the greatest things about Bishop Kelley is the number of clubs, activities, and extracurriculars in which students can get involved. One longstanding tradition on that list is the Speech and Debate program. Bishop Kelley’s competitive speech and debate teams are among the best in the state, having won

the speech and debate regional tournament every year for 20 years. If that isn’t impressive enough, just in the 2015 season, the team won multiple team tournaments, individual events, academic state champion (for highest GPA), and fourth place overall in the state. Along with being an ex-
tremely successful program it is also a lot of fun and a great way to meet new people and have a good time. Sarah Mabardy (12) has been a part of the speech team for almost all of her years at Kelley and she loves it. “I love being a part of the speech and debate team, it’s one of my favorite things to do
here at Kelley,” Mabardy said. The new season is underway, with the team having already hosted a tournament here at school. With more tournaments to come the Comets are looking for another spot at the regional tournament.
