Saint Maria Goretti Comes to Bishop kelley Students, Faculty, Family, and even a school from Kansas come to venerate the major relics of Saint Maria Goretti. BY: ABBY NAGODE The anticipation was obvious. Wednesday November 11, students and faculty at all over school were excited for Saint Maria Goretti to come visit on her Pilgrimage of Mercy. In honor of her visit, students, faculty and family were all invited to celebrate all-school Mass, and to take time to venerate her relics and create third class relics at her reliquary. Once Mass ended, the school opened its doors to visitors from all across the midwest came to see the young saint. Even a whole school from
Pittsburg, Kansas made the trip down to Tulsa. The waiting lines were out the cafeteria/ gym doors. “It was beautiful to see so many people from all over come to our school for this event,” Becca Hembrey (12) said. Following her stop at Kelley, the relics made a stop at Saints Peter and Paul in Tulsa and then returned to Italy, a day earlier than originally planned. This saint, her story and her visit will not soon be forgotten by anyone here to witness this special event.
Students get the opportunity to create a third class relic from any holy object. After Mass ended, the students were given the chance to pray and venerate in front of Saint Maria Goretti’s relics. “It was beautiful to see so many people from all over come to our school for this event,” Becca Hembrey (12) said.
The Pilgrimage of mercy Can a saint amass frequent flyer miles? On her Pilgrimage of Mercy, Saint Maria Goretti has traveled thousands of miles in barely two months. Oklahoma was the last stop in this pilgrimage, but plans are already underway for a West Coast tour very soon.
The Pilgrimage of Mercy bus parks in the Bishop Kelley parking lot. Over a thousand visitors flocked to venerate the young saint. “It was cool because it’s a once-in-a-lifetime event,” McKenna Lewis (11) said.
