Welcome to the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra’s 89th Concert Season I am delighted to introduce our 2013-14 season. I hope you will agree that we have been able to put together an interesting set of programmes. The Brighton Philharmonic Society faces the same challenges as every other arts organisation during these difficult times, and I hope you will nevertheless find plenty to attract you to attend these concerts. For our sponsors and those of
you who purchase Season Tickets, your contributions are critical to us and allow these programmes to go ahead, attracting quality soloists and introducing pieces of music with which you may not always be familiar. I have undertaken to conduct all the concerts this season, and I am particularly looking forward to celebrating the New Year with you all for the first time since taking on
the Music Directorship. We have a fine selection of soloists for the season, and it is always a pleasure to welcome the Brighton Festival Chorus to perform with us, but especially this year in a Bach Family concert. There are some unusual works to be heard including a wonderful Piano Concerto by Lowell Liebermann, which I am sure you will find very approachable and exciting in the hands
of Rob Clark. I thank you for your support, and look forward to seeing you on the 6th October for our first concert of the season.

Our concert season opens with a programme of majestic Beethoven. It is several years since the orchestra has presented an all Beethoven programme. We are pleased to welcome Jayson Gillham, a young Australian pianist, who was a finalist in the recent Leeds International Piano Competition and Royal Overseas League Commonwealth Musician of the Year 2012, as our soloist in today’s ‘Emperor’ Piano Concerto.

Sinfonia Op 18, No. 2
CPE Bach Magnificat Our Orchestra joins forces with the Brighton Festival Chorus to present a programme of works by members of the Bach family. Johann Sebastian’s two sons Johann Christian and Carl Philipp Emmanuel were both innovative and unorthodox composers whose works foreshadow those of their more famous successors Haydn and Mozart. The Magnificat by CPE Bach was written in 1749 while he was in Berlin as a member of Frederick the Great’s orchestra. This programme has been planned in association with the Brighton Early Music Festival which runs from 25th October to 10th November. 1.45pm

Humperdinck Prelude to Hansel and Gretel

The Nutcracker Act 2 Our seasonal concert opens with the magical Prelude to Humperdinck’s opera Hansel and Gretel. Our soloist in Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, Vasko Vassilev, is the leader of the Royal Opera House orchestra and works closely with Barry Wordsworth. The season would not be complete without Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite and the music from Act Two follows on from our performance of Act One in 2009. This Act has all the famous dances within it.

including works by Strauss family members Barry Wordsworth Conductor For the first time in many years Barry Wordsworth will conduct our traditional New Year’s Eve concert. In addition to familiar classics, the afternoon will include colourful orchestral evocations of the Dance, virtuosic showpieces and glittering operetta to get your celebrations off to a rousing start. This is a fund-raising concert for the John Carewe Brighton Orchestra Trust, supporting the BPO.

Two orchestral favourites by Dvořák surround a surprise item. In 1807 Beethoven reworked his own Violin Concerto into a Piano Concerto for a friend of his which featured in the famous six-hour marathon concert which Beethoven himself presented. Our soloist Andrejs Osokin was another finalist in this year’s Leeds International Piano Competition.

Symphony No. 4, Op. 98 in E minor
Haydn’s London Symphony is at the pinnacle of the Classical Symphony style. Having just conducted a Haydn symphony over one hundred years later, Prokofiev loosely emulated the style in his First Symphony written as the Russian Revolution was ending. After conducting the Haydn symphony, he wrote “This is the kind of symphony I wanted to write; a symphony in classical style.” It is a witty and virtuosic piece. In contrast Mendelssohn’s beautiful Violin Concerto spins romantic melodies. Who better to play with youthful ardour that a young student at the Yehudi Menuhin School!

Our orchestra ranges across the centuries and continents in a programme of classical, romantic and twentieth century works. We move from Italy to Northern Europe and, by popular request, across the Atlantic to America and the music of Aaron Copland. The soloist in the Vivaldi Bassoon Concerto in A minor is Andrea de Flammineis, the principal bassoon of the Royal Opera House Orchestra.
In the centenary year of Benjamin Britten, the orchestra pays tribute to his teacher and Brighton resident, Frank Bridge. His four movement orchestral suite The Sea was written in 1911 before the outbreak of World War One which was to affect Bridge deeply. It is one of his most accessible and popular works. Lowell Liebermann, another American, wrote his Piano Concerto No. 1 in 1988. Behind the virtuosic writing, there is a darker side to the work with its use of a Scottish graveyard dance, the Maccaber Dance, the title of the third and final movement. What better way could there be to conclude our season than with another in our series of Brahms’s symphonies, his Fourth in E minor...?

Discounts Under-18s, full time students, and customers on Jobseeker’s Allowance or Income Support are entitled to a discount of at least 50% (proof of status required).
