Gordon Stewart’s organ and lunchtime chamber concerts continue to delight large audiences with the breadth and accessibility of the music and the artists on show. His opening organ concert will showcase Huddersfield Town Hall’s mighty 1860 Father Willis organ perfectly, and also features the Brass Ensemble of Opera North.

We have invited back some of our most popular conductors and soloists to join us alongside some very exciting new faces. A highlight will be the performance of Mozart’s Requiem – a masterpiece that will also showcase the Chorus of Opera North. The Kirklees Concert Season opens with masterpieces by two of the greatest exponents of the classical style, together with a symphony by a 20th-century master. Haydn is widely acknowledged as the Father of the Symphony, and it’s impossible to imagine the great works of Mozart, Beethoven and all who came after him without his example. But Haydn’s symphonies are also wonders in their own right, brimming with invention, humour, drama and surprises; this is some of the most sheerly enjoyable music you will ever hear. Like Haydn’s ‘London’ symphony, Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto is a work that came late in its composer’s career. Tailor-made for Mozart’s friend, the clarinettist Anton Stadler, it is one of the best-loved pieces of all time, its enduring popularity boosted by its use in films such as Out of Africa.
The opening concert of the season in Huddersfield also features a masterpiece of Mozart’s final year, 1791. The Requiem was Mozart’s very last work, left unfinished at the time of his death aged just 35. All sorts of myths have sprung up over the years surrounding the commissioning and composition of the work, but however intriguing the mysteries, the actuality of this most human of Requiems in all its beauty and terror remains a wonder to behold when encountered live. The joint forces of the Chorus and Orchestra of Opera North are conducted by maestro Jac van Steen in a programme that also features Sibelius’s Fourth Symphony and the Prelude to Wagner’s opera Lohengrin. All in all, a very special start to the Huddersfield season.

Join us as we venture into the deep dark wood with the acclaimed animated films based on the books The Gruffalo and its delightful successor The Gruffalo’s Child by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. This enchanting double bill is shown on the big screen accompanied live by the Royal Northern Sinfonia. Rene Aubrey’s beautiful scores make for a perfect introduction to the orchestra, so this performance is the ideal opportunity to introduce the delights of live orchestral music to younger family members and friends. In the first of two consecutive appearances in this year’s Kirklees Season, Opera North’s Music Director conducts three groundbreaking works. The music of the Hungarian composer Béla Bartók is especially close to Richard Farnes’s heart. Premièred in 1939, Bartók’s Second Violin Concerto is widely regarded as one of the greatest orchestral works of the 20th century: rhapsodic, mysterious and superbly scored, it is extraordinarily atmospheric. Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony is famous for its ferocious rhythmic drive – Wagner wrote of it ‘All tumult, all yearning, and storming of the heart’ and dubbed it ‘the apotheosis of the dance’. Wagner’s own overture to his opera The Flying Dutchman – his first true masterpiece – opens the concert, and is a taste of things to come: Opera North will give complete performances of the opera in the summer of 2015.

Brahms’s D major Concerto is one of the peaks of the violin repertoire. The rugged grandeur of the massive first movement gives way to the melting lyricism of the second, whilst the finale is flavoured with vigorous Hungarian folk rhythms, a tribute to the man for whom the work was written, the Hungarian virtuoso Joseph Joachim. Following in Joachim’s footsteps this evening is one of the most compelling young violinists on the concert platform today, Jack Liebeck. The concert is completed by two masterworks of French orchestral tone painting – La Valse, Ravel’s tribute to the waltz, its touches of parody shot through with a surprising romanticism, and Debussy’s impressionistic evocation of the sea, La Mer.
The annual Dewsbury Christmas concert has become a popular fixture in the calendar in recent years, and with good reason: this special time of year has inspired many of the greatest composers to write some of their finest music. This year, as well as enjoying music by Bach and Mendelssohn, you’ll bask in the glow of some exquisite arrangements of Christmas carols by the English composer John Rutter, whose own music is often strongly associated with the festive period. You’ll also have the opportunity to add your voice to the Chorus of Opera North in favourite carols, ensuring that your Christmas season gets off to a truly joyous start.

Mozart had a special relationship with the city of Prague – his opera The Marriage of Figaro was a triumph there and led to the commission for Don Giovanni. His Symphony No.38 was premièred in the city in January 1787 – hence its nickname. It’s a work full of operatic touches – the drama of Don Giovanni rubbing shoulders with the high spirits and nobility of The Magic Flute. Schumann’s symphonies were regarded by the more discerning of his contemporaries as being the most original and important after Beethoven’s. The ‘Rhenish’ Symphony is perhaps the most popular of the four, and its opening movement rides an adrenalin surge of energy. Between these two masterly symphonies comes Prokofiev’s Second Piano Concerto, dramatic and fiendishly difficult for the soloist. Dmitri Shostakovich may be best known for his intensely serious symphonies and string quartets, but there was a lighter, more carefree side to his musical personality, and it is given free rein in the predominantly cheerful Second Piano Concerto. The Estonian composer Arvo Pärt has, for the past few years, been the most frequently performed contemporary composer in the world, a fact which comes as no surprise when you hear a piece as beautiful as his Fratres. This evening’s concert closes with Mozart’s last symphony, the ‘Jupiter’. The composer could hardly have known, when he put pen to manuscript paper in the summer of 1788, that this would be his last essay in the form, but it’s hard to imagine a more fitting climax to his symphonic career than this grand and festive work.
Some of the best-loved (and some of the best) orchestral music of the 20th and 21st centuries has been composed for the silver screen. This season’s Classic FM at the Movies programme pays tributes to such masters of the genre as Danny Elfman and Howard Shore, as well as celebrating the enormous contribution that the great classical composers have made to so many of our favourite films. This concert is the perfect way to share with all the family the power and the glory of wonderful orchestral music played live – so do book soon for what is bound to be one of the most popular dates in the season!

Three works with strong associations with dance dominate this evening’s concert. Gershwin’s musical love letter to Paris, written in 1928, was not originally intended to be danced, but it is now indelibly linked with images of Leslie Caron and Gene Kelly dancing against the backdrop of the City of Romance in the 1951 film An American in Paris. Stravinsky’s Firebird took a journey in the opposite direction, from ballet score to orchestral suite. Premièred in 1910 by the Ballets Russes, the ballet was an immediate sensation with audiences and critics, and the 1919 orchestral suite heard here demonstrates Stravinsky’s total mastery of orchestral colour. In his Mother Goose suite, Ravel weaves together several French fairy tales, including Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast and Tom Thumb, to make music that is a delight for adults and children alike.

Join us for an afternoon of popular classics in the intimate surroundings of Dewsbury Town Hall. Tchaikovsky’s music for the ballet The Nutcracker and Prokofiev’s musical tale Peter and the Wolf have inspired a love of classical music in generation after generation of children, and such is the enduring quality of these scores that they are also enjoyed and enjoyed again by all those – young and old – who know and love them well. Peter and the Wolf will be followed this afternoon by Wolf Tracks, or The Wolf and Peter, a delightful sequel to Prokofiev’s original by the French composer JeanPascal Beintus, and the concert is presented and narrated by Huddersfieldborn BBC Radio Leeds personality Liz Green.

Brahms struggled mightily to compose his First Symphony, so weighed down was he by the expectation that he was Beethoven’s natural successor. His Second Symphony came much more quickly and is a far more relaxed work than the heroic First. Brahms jokingly wrote to his publisher that the Second Symphony ‘is so melancholy that you’ll be unable to bear it’, but it is a joke that contains a germ of truth, for although this is a predominantly warm and lyrical work, it is shot through with moments of agitation and melancholy before reaching its triumphant conclusion. The prodigiously talented Guy Johnston makes a welcome return to the Kirklees Season for the first time in four years in one of the great Romantic cello concertos, and the concert opens with a perennial favourite, Tchaikovsky’s lovely Serenade for Strings.

Monday 22 September 2014 Gordon Stewart with the Brass Ensemble of Opera North In this gala opening concert Borough Organist Gordon Stewart is joined by the entire brass section of the Orchestra of Opera North in a programme which includes music by Thalben-Ball, Bach, and Gigout. As we mark the centenary of the start of World War One, of special interest will be the seldom heard Poème Héroique for organ and brass, written by Marcel Dupré in 1936 for a service in Verdun rededicating the cathedral on the 20th anniversary of the horrific battle which ruined the church in 1916. Organ solos will include Bach’s Sinfonia to Cantata 29 and Dupré’s Prelude and Fugue in G Minor.

Although the art of transcribing for the organ goes back to the earliest days of organ playing, it flourished in the 19th and early 20th centuries when the great town hall organs were being built and transcriptions were used to let orchestral music be heard in parts of the country where there were no orchestras. Monday 15 December 2014 University of Huddersfield Brass Band The annual appearance of the University of Huddersfield Brass Band is a Christmas highlight for many Kirklees concert-goers. Here they are again under their charismatic conductor Phillip McCann in a new programme for Christmas, including carols for all to sing.
Monday 22 December 2014 Gordon Stewart with Huddersfield Young Singers and Flute Salad Many of the audience say their Christmas really begins with this lunchtime concert. Gordon Stewart is again joined by the 80 voices of the Huddersfield Young Singers and the Derbyshirebased ensemble, Flute Salad, who made such an impact three years ago. The programme will be a mix of Christmas music old and new, with organ music by Bach, Callahan and Cockroft and carols for audience, choir and organ.
Monday 12 January 2015 The Art of the Improviser Gordon Stewart with George King (piano) Gordon Stewart is again joined by piano virtuoso George King in a format which was extremely popular last season. From organ works by Bach, Vierne and Gardonyi, George will take themes and create new pieces on the Town Hall’s Steinway piano. George’s compositions have won prizes in the UK and the USA, and he has played venues as varied as Carnegie Hall in New York and Ronnie Scott’s in London.

Built by Christian Müller in 1738, it looks as beautiful as it sounds. He opens his concert with a work by his predecessor there, Piet Kee, who has played many times at Huddersfield University. Monday 9 February 2015 Gordon Stewart Gordon Stewart surrounds César Franck’s large-scale Choral, one of the composer’s last works, with pieces using the quieter stops of the Father Willis organ. Bach’s Trio Sonatas were written for his son Wilhelm Friedemann, and Vaughan Williams’s prelude on Rhosymedre is a Town Hall favourite. Ending the programme are three pieces by a little-known Parisian organist, Augustin Barié, considered by Vierne to be one of the most talented organists in France at that time. John Scott Whiteley played the organ at York Minster for over 35 years. Recognised as one of Britain’s finest organists, he plays an enormous repertoire which includes the complete works of both Bach and Jongen. For this concert he has put together a programme full of variety. Many will have seen his wonderful Bach series on BBC television and will look forward to his interpretation of the virtuosic Prelude and Fugue in D. Gordon Stewart opens this concert with an exciting arrangement of a piece which became well-known when used as the signature-tune for BBC’s Going for a Song. After two pieces by Bach come three new pieces by Frederick Stocken, whose previous works include a symphony premièred at the Royal Albert Hall by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Robert Cockroft’s Scherzetto finds him at his most amusing, and Denis Bédard’s Toccata is a tour de force for the pedals! Monday 9 March 2015 Freddie James (Cambridge) Freddie James studied in Amsterdam and Cambridge and has been awarded prizes by the Royal College of Organists, the W T Best Trust and the Worshipful Company of Musicians. Tom is the Hallé Orchestra’s co-principal trumpeter and Rachel is a member of the chorus of Opera North. They have put together a wonderful programme which stretches from the glory of the Baroque via Petr Eben to another of Tom’s virtuoso cornet pieces. A perfect lunchtime programme. Monday 13 April 2015 Gordon Stewart Gordon Stewart ends the season with a typically varied programme which includes music from France, Germany, England and Italy. Pedal solos abound in the Bach and the Bonnet, and the Pachelbel and Festing allow the quiet stops of the Father Willis organ to be featured. No doubt the Widor Toccata will end the series on full organ with the magnificent 32’ Contra Bombarde very much in evidence! His programme for Dewsbury stretches from the world of song, through opera to the great musicals of the 20th century. A programme which certainly goes under the title “something for everyone”.
Wednesday 10 December 2014 The University of Huddersfield Brass Band For many of the Dewsbury audience Christmas starts when they come to hear the wonderful University of Huddersfield Brass Band. Here they are again in concert, directed by the charismatic Phillip McCann, with lots of new pieces to welcome in the Festive Season, and carols for all to sing. Page 26

George King is unique amongst British pianists in that he is recognised as a classical concert pianist but is also an internationally admired jazz pianist. This will be his fourth appearance in the series and he really is back by public demand. There will certainly be fireworks in Brahms and Rachmaninov and the usual King invention in an improvisation on a popular melody.
David Greed, leader of the Orchestra of Opera North, is joined by some of the north of England’s finest chamber musicians in a programme which includes perhaps the finest of all Romantic chamber works, the Schumann Piano Quintet. Paired with this is Mozart’s beautiful G Minor Piano Quartet. For any lover of chamber music this will be a concert not to be missed.

Wednesday 11 March 2015 Lisa Osborne (Oboe) with Paul Janes (Piano) When Lisa Osborne played in a concert with soprano Rachel Mosley last season several audience members asked if she could be invited back to play a solo concert. Here she is with the brilliant Paul Janes in a programme which includes classics for oboe and piano by Bach and Schumann, and piano solos by Ravel and Debussy. By special request the programme also includes Gabriel’s Oboe by Ennio Morricone.

Wednesday 13 May 2015 Mike Escreet and Heather Bills (Double Bass and Cello) Former principal members of the Hallé and BBC Philharmonic orchestras set aside their rivalry and come together to present a varied and entertaining programme of duos for cello and double bass. The programme includes Rossini’s light and witty duo along with earlier and later works. This unusual combination brings the series to an exciting end. Don’t miss two of the North’s finest musicians together in concert.

Wheelchair Access A number of wheelchair positions are available in the stalls only.
