Resident Orchestra at Cadogan Hall Something Different in our Spring Season The Orchestra’s spring season highlights include a concert devoted to music by one of Britain’s most dynamic composers, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. This accessible programme features Maxwell Davies’ irrepressible and popular Orkney Wedding, With Sunrise, which always delights audiences with its humorous portrayal of an unruly Scottish knees-up. In April the Orchestra perform the London premiere of the Suite from Tarik O’Regan’s recent opera, Heart of Darkness, which has met with great acclaim for its ‘music of startling beauty’ (The Observer) and its ‘magical sound-world’(The Telegraph). Inspired by Joseph Conrad’s haunting novella, O’ Regan perfectly captures the dark and mysterious nature of this timeless tale. Two concerts not to be missed, why not try something new?

Welcome to Spring 2013 at Cadogan Hall. We have another full season of concerts, events, gigs and recitals- classical, choral and contemporary for every taste. Classical The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s new season is one of the most exciting and diverse yet and Cadogan Hall’s Zurich International Concert Series offers a programme of world-renowned artists, including a three-concert residency from the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra. The much-admired London Chamber Orchestra offers a season of concerts with conductor Christopher Warren-Green and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields is here with Janine Jansen and Joshua Bell. Choral Bach’s St Matthew Passion, Haydn’s Creation and Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius are all being performed at Cadogan Hall this spring. Choral At Cadogan goes from strength to strength and we still have I Fagiolini, Tenebrae and The Tallis Scholars to look forward to. Contemporary Paul Carrack, Tanita Tikaram, Jane Birkin, Robert Cray and Joe Brown are all musical legends performing here over the next few months. London New Year’s Day Parade Christmas Cracker Concerts

These concerts are performed by the very best high school bands from America. A variety of concert bands, orchestras and jazz bands will perform traditional classical music as well as familiar favourites. Beethoven Coriolan Overture Beethoven Piano Concerto No.1 Brahms Symphony No.2

Bandleader and clarinettist Pete Long (Ronnie Scott’s Big Band, Echoes of Ellington and exsax star of Jools Holland’s Rhythm and Blues Orchestra) presents a superlative recreation of one of the greatest concerts in jazz history. Benny’s line up that night included stars such as trumpeters Harry James and Ziggy Elman, drummer Gene Krupa and pianist Jess Stacey. It was also the first time ever that black and white jazz musicians appeared together on the concert stage in the USA with Lionel Hampton on vibes, Teddy Wilson on piano and stars of the Duke Ellington and Count Basie Orchestras making guest appearances. At the original concert, the musicians played without amplification and the wonderful acoustic of Cadogan Hall makes it possible for our anniversary concert to do likewise. Tickets £25, £18, £12

Stefan Solyom conductor Nelson Goerner piano Founded in 1491, the Staatskapelle Weimar is one of the oldest orchestras in the world, its reputation inextricably linked to some of the greatest works and musicians of all time. This was the orchestra in which Bach was employed and which enjoyed particular renown under the direction of Franz Liszt in the mid-19th century and then Richard Strauss. The award-winning Argentinean pianist Nelson Goerner is one of the foremost pianists of his generation, celebrated for his solo and concerto performances. We are enormously proud to welcome such a distinguished orchestra, with Chief Conductor Stefan Solyom as part of our series.

Stravinsky Dumbarton Oaks Mozart Clarinet Concerto Mozart Symphony No.39 Mark van de Wiel clarinet Christopher Warren-Green conductor The London Chamber Orchestra performs a programme featuring Stravinsky’s Dumbarton Oaks and Mozart’s Symphony No.39 and Clarinet Concerto, performed by LCO clarinettist Mark van de Wiel. Dumbarton Oaks was the last work Stravinsky completed before leaving Europe, composed during his neo-classical period. The piece is named for the Dumbarton Oaks estate in Washington DC, which was owned by Robert and Mildred Bliss, who commissioned Stravinsky to compose a piece in the tradition of Bach’s Brandenburg concertos.

Exhilarating and entrancing in equal measure, with a climax to the show that is not to be missed. A gem of a rock show. Sore throat guaranteed!

Via Japan Brahms Tragic Overture Chopin Piano Concerto No.2 Beethoven Symphony No.6 (Pastoral) Fabien Gabel conductor Janina Fialkowska piano Brahms composed his Tragic Overture while on holiday in 1880, writing that ‘I could not refuse my melancholy nature the satisfaction of composing an overture for a tragedy’. The Overture encompasses imposing, turbulent ideas, poignant lyricism and memorable rhythms. In Chopin’s Piano Concerto No.2, the irresistibly romantic Larghetto is framed by an animated, intricate opening movement, and a lively finale in the style of Polish folk-music. Beethoven’s expansive Pastoral Symphony is a magnificent mixture of charm and innovation, brimming with evocative melodies which create a vivid impression of the countryside in all its majesty.

Jane Birkin makes a rare London appearance singing the songs of her late partner Serge Gainsbourg. Jane was Serge’s muse and this special concert is a reinterpretation of his repertoire performed by Jane with a group of very special musicians, with whom she first performed in Japan soon after the earthquake.

Tanita Tikaram, multi-million selling British singer- songwriter, shot to fame with her award winning album Ancient Heart in 1988, featuring the hit songs ‘Twist In My Sobriety’ and ‘Good Tradition’. She released her seventh studio album Can’t Go Back last August preceded by the release of ‘Dust on My Shoes’, an airplay hit single.

Legendary Sheffield-born singer, songwriter and former front man of Ace, Squeeze and Mike & The Mechanics returns to the road. With a back catalogue of hits including ‘How Long’, ‘Tempted’ and ‘The Living Years’, Paul’s marvellously soulful voice is known to millions around the world; he is undoubtedly a key figure in British pop history. As his devoted fans know all too well, a Paul Carrack show is always something very special.

‘I’ve always wanted to write a song like ‘Dust on My Shoes’, she says. ‘It’s a simple freedom song. The word ‘freedom’ becomes more and more important to me – in every choice, political and moral decision and the attempt to live in a free way. Hopefully, on the album you hear it in the playing, too!! ‘Can’t go Back’ is the song that sums up the spirit of the album…the desire to live in the moment and the temptation to revise the past. I can’t wait to get out there and start playing the new songs to everyone!’ This is Tanita’s final show on a short UK tour, backed by some very special musicians. Choral at Cadogan Shostakovich Festive Overture Sibelius Karelia Suite Prokofiev Piano Concerto No.1 Mussorgsky, orch. Ravel Pictures at an Exhibition Dmitry Yablonsky conductor Farhad Badalbeyli piano Written in just three days, Shostakovich’s Festive Overture is a dazzling tour de force, demanding breathtaking agility from the whole orchestra. Also written in haste, the Karelia Suite by Sibelius is one of his most popular works, its shimmering textures and bold melodies celebrating the composer’s native Finland. Prokofiev’s dynamic and colourful First Piano Concerto was written when he was a student; Prokofiev premiered the Concerto himself, considering it to be his first mature work. This programme culminates in the grandeur of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition orchestrated by Ravel, each movement vividly conjuring up a different scene.

After a busy concert series in Japan, violinist Taro Hakase returns to Cadogan Hall for an early Valentine’s evening of romantic tangos. Taro has not played in Britain since the moving charity concert of March 2012, organized by Taro to mark the first anniversary of the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan. The concert raised over £34,000 for the Ashinaga Charity in Japan, thanks to your support. This charity will be using the money to help with the lives of those children who were orphaned by the tsunami of 2011. This time Taro’s focus is on love and romance, as befits a concert at this time of year. Amongst the pieces he will be playing are some of Piazzolla’s best known works – The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, Libertango, and Adios Nonino as well as Taro’s own compositions. There should be something for everyone in the programme! He will be joined on stage with his long term accompanist, Maciej Janas, Tim Lowe on cello and Milos Milivojevic on accordion.

A rare opportunity to hear and see the world famous Coldstream Guards Band in concert in their home city of London. 2012 has been an incredible year of Pomp and Ceremony with the Coldstream Guards at the forefront of the celebrations. The concert, featuring internationally acclaimed saxophonist Fabrice Moretti promises to be a spectacular occasion with all the proceeds from the concert going to ABF The Soldiers’ Charity. The programme will include Lovatt-Cooper’s ‘Enter the Galaxies’, Lloyd Webber’s ‘The Phantom of the Opera’, Irving Gordon’s ‘Unforgettable’, Walton’s ‘Crown Imperial’, a newly commissioned work by Peter Meechan to mark the 100th Anniversary of the Coldstream Guards Association and regimental marches.

This evening presents a unique opportunity to hear Janine Jansen performing two of Mozart’s violin concertos including the sublime Concerto No.5.

The Grimethorpe Colliery Band is probably the nation’s favourite colliery band with an international reputation for excellence on both the concert and contest stage. The band was formed in 1917 as a leisure activity for the workers at the colliery by members of the disbanded Cudworth Colliery Band. Since then it has featured in film, TV and radio and the band is justifiably proud of its history and achievements. The band also starred in and provided the soundtrack for the 1996 British hit film Brassed Off which also featured Pete Postlethwaite, Tara Fitzgerald and Ewan McGregor.

Orchestra of the Swan returns to Cadogan Hall with outstanding violinist Tamsin Waley-Cohen who captivated our audience last year with a mesmerising performance of The Lark Ascending. Mendelssohn’s bravura early concertos offer the perfect showcase for her youthful virtuosity.

Considered the leading Polish orchestra, the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1935 in Warsaw. We are very pleased to welcome them back under conductor Jacek Kaspszyk.

The band regularly performs sell out concerts throughout the UK and tours internationally to Australia, New Zealand, Japan Hong Kong and various other locations in the Far East.

We stay in youthful mood for one of the most beautiful works for string orchestra, the Suk Serenade, composed to impress his father-in-law to be, Antonin Dvorˇák who was suitably impressed.

Zurich International Concert Series

An artist of great creativity and charisma, Mikhail Rudy performs Shostakovich’s Second Piano Concerto. The Concerto, written in 1957 as a birthday gift for his 19-year-old son Maxim, is full of lighthearted energy.

‘The Lark Ascending received a superlative performance due to Tamsin Waley-Cohen’s purity of tone, and an ability to hold the line in the poetic statement enshrined in this magical work.’ (Classical Source)

Often considered Schubert’s finest piece for orchestra, Symphony No.9 has an emphasis on melody throughout. Today, as we have become aware of the symphony’s extent and intensity, Great has become an accepted part of the work’s title, reflecting its grandeur.

Bach: St Matthew Passion

First performed on Good Friday 1727, the St Matthew Passion was conceived on a monumental scale. The story of Christ’s betrayal, trial and death is told in the words of the Evangelist, with the soloists and choir taking the roles of Jesus, his disciples, Pilate and the crowd. Bach intersperses the narrative with profoundly expressive choruses, arias and chorales to produce a work of intense emotional impact. Sung in German. Please note start time.

Works inspired by Shakespeare and Byron make up the first half of this concert by the Doctors’ Orchestra, appearing for the fifth time at Cadogan Hall and again playing in support of Freedom from Torture. The orchestra is joined by the stunning young Hungarian violist Eniko Magyar for a performance of Berlioz’s Harold in Italy, a concerto in all but name and written for Paganini. The second half of the concert is given over to Elgar’s acutely observed and sumptuous Enigma Variations, whose ninth variation (Nimrod) must be one of the most loved and most requested pieces in the entire classical repertoire.

The Brussels Philharmonic has performed with leading conductors and soloists and, in the course of its existence, has created new works by world-famous composers such as Stravinsky, Messiaen and Francesconi. Since 2008, Music Director Michel Tabachnik has been a key figure, combining the great orchestral repertoire with music from the 20th century. Consistently cited for his ‘sound imagination’ with his playing praised as ‘impeccable’ (The Guardian), Markus Groh has confirmed his place among the finest pianists in the world today. For this concert he performs Bartók‘s Piano Concerto No.3, written at the end of the composer’s life, perhaps reflected in the more serene and lyrical nature of the work.

Robert Cray has been known as one of the most popular artists in blues and soul music. Under its Principal Conductor, Martin Yates ‘one of the most exciting and versatile British conductors of his generation’ in the words of The Times they perform Rachmaninov’s monumental Piano Concerto No.3 with acclaimed pianist Peter Donohoe. The programme ends with Mussorgsky’s famous Pictures at an Exhibition, which was based on ten drawings and watercolours produced by his great friend Victor Hartmann.

Vivaldi: A Tale of Two Seasons

Vivaldi’s career from the mid-1710s became more and more focused on his theatrical endeavours. As well as composing operas, he played specially written entr’acte concertos and often acted as impresario. The years 1716 – 17 saw Vivaldi in control of the Teatro San Angelo and arias and the sinfonia to L’Incoronazione di Dario are included here. Vivaldi’s galante style of the 1730s provides a sharp contrast to his simpler, more direct approach of the 1710s. If ever there was proof that he didn’t write one concerto 400 times, this is it!

The work, written for choir and percussion ensemble, is inspired by Copeland’s school days at Millfield in the 1960s and contrasts driving, rhythmic patterns with stark open chords in the voices.

Founded by Tim Rhys-Evans in 2010, Only Boys Aloud was established to re-invigorate the Welsh male choral tradition aiming to offer these young men extraordinary experiences and a wealth of opportunities. Most recently they were placed third in ITV’s 2012 Britain’s Got Talent competition, receiving world-wide recognition and have since appeared at many high-profile events.

The chamber choir, Tenebrae, conducted by Nigel Short, joins forces with the English Chamber Orchestra to perform music by Bernstein and Elgar alongside the melodically beautiful and harmonically rich music of celebrated Jubilee composer Will Todd. Premier rock ‘n’ roll legend Joe Brown goes from strength to strength as his contemporary achievements continue to gather momentum. His Very Best Of album achieved a gold record for a massive 120,000 sales and was on the UK charts for eight weeks staying four weeks in the Top 20. In September the same year, his 50th anniversary was celebrated with a wonderful sell-out show at the Royal Albert Hall. He has continued to break box office records and recently received MOJO magazine’s coveted Outstanding Contribution to Music Award as well as a much deserved MBE. Joe, with his five piece band including his son and record producer Pete Brown, will be on stage all evening and the musical styles incorporated into his new show break more boundaries and are as unique as the man himself.

Jacqui Dankworth is considered to be ‘one of the classiest acts in British jazz singing’ (The Guardian). Inspired by Joseph Conrad’s novella, O’Regan’s opera has already met with great acclaim for its ‘music of startling beauty’ (The Observer) and ‘a magical and haunting sound-world’ (The Telegraph). Elgar’s Cockaigne Overture is a vibrant celebration of London, depicting a couple exploring the metropolis, enjoying sounds from church bells to a brass band. The Second Symphony by Sibelius is one of his most engaging and beautiful compositions, overflowing with exhilarating orchestral textures.

David Skinner director A selection of music to chart the development of English composition from the great preReformation works from the time of Henry VIII, to music for the first English prayerbook of 1549, to the restored Catholic Church under Mary Tudor. The programme culminates with masterworks from Tallis and Byrd’s Cantiones Sacrae of 1575, marking the birth of England’s musical Renaissance.

Emmanuel Despax piano Thomas Carroll conductor ‘Poetry fused with breathtaking technical perfection’ is how the brilliant young French pianist Emmanuel Despax was described after a recent concert at the Louvre. Tonight he joins the Orpheus Sinfonia in three piano concertos including a world premiere. Stephen Goss’s accessible new piano concerto is inspired by the extraordinary architecture, sculpture and designs of Thomas Heatherwick. The concerto was specially commissioned by SW Mitchell Capital for Emmanuel Despax. The programme begins with Beethoven’s joyous First Symphony and concludes with two jewels of the Romantic virtuoso piano concerto repertoire. Tonight’s concert will be recorded live for future release on Signum Classics.

Tchaikovsky Cycle 2 Nina Kotova For almost seven decades, the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra has been recognized as one of the foremost interpreters of the classic Russian composers. An L.A. Times critic recently said the orchestra ‘might well be the world’s least-heralded great orchestra’. Since Pavel Kogan became Music Director he has earned the orchestra a high reputation for artistic excellence and in 2011 his name went into a list of the ten greatest conductors of the 20th century. Along with a line-up of virtuosic young soloists this series of concerts celebrating the key works of Tchaikovsky is a treat not to be missed.

Riyad Nicolas piano Christopher Warren-Green conductor Christopher Warren-Green and LCO champion another young musician by inviting pianist Riyad Nicholas to perform Beethoven’s signature piece: the Emperor Concerto. It is always challenging for a young musician to take on seminal works which have already been performed to perfection by distinguished, revered artists. Riyad’s pedigree is strong; even at the age of 23 he has many prizes under his fingers. It was after what is described as a failed attempt to perform this very piano concerto in 1811 that Beethoven gave in to his deafness and did not perform in public again. The Warren-Green/LCO mix has gained a notable reputation for their Beethoven performances – ‘Their Beethoven 9th was one of the best I have ever heard’ (The Times).

This is a not-to-be-missed evening of Feel Good music inspired by the greats and played by the best.

Peter Phillips director In this anniversary year of Carlo Gesualdo’s death, it is a pleasure to perform again his astonishing Responsories for Holy Saturday. When our recording of this set first came out in the late ’80s the Gramophone critic wrote: ‘Is this great music or merely weird?’ After many more performances I can say quite clearly that it is both. Since winning BBC Young Musician of the Year in 2000 Guy Johnston has established himself as one of the country’s most sought after and leading cellists of his generation. This concert is in aid of the Kampala Music School’s 10th Anniversary Appeal, the aim of which is to fund the expansion of the school and the purchase of a new building, including a new performance hall. Getting to Cadogan Hall

Accessibility Free companion / Assistance scheme Cadogan Hall has a range of services to assist disabled customers including provision for wheelchair users in the stalls. Companions of disabled customers are entitled to a free seat when assisting disabled customers at Cadogan Hall. Please note that companion seats not sold 48 hours prior to any given performance will be released for general sale.

The easiest way to travel to Cadogan Hall is by public transport. Located two minutes walk from Sloane Square Tube, served by District and Circle lines, just one stop from Victoria station which has both mainline and additional Tube connections.

Two minutes walk Upon exiting Sloane Square Station, turn immediately right, passing the Royal Court Theatre. (You will see Cadogan Hall’s tower immediately before you). Cross over Cliveden Place and walk up Sedding Street to the Hall.

A limited number of bays are available on Sloane Terrace, Wilbraham Place and Sedding Street after 6.30pm.

Bus Sloane Street one minute walk Frequent bus services stop in Sloane Square and neighbouring streets including King’s Road, Sloane Street and Lower Sloane Street. Bus services include numbers 11, 19, 22, 137, 211, 319, 360 and c1.

Wheelchair users

Special Offer from NCP Car Park, Cadogan Place 6 hours parking for £10 Cadogan Hall audience members may obtain a discounted ticket for the car park when they purchase a concert ticket. Car park tickets are held at the Box office, please drop in to collect one or ask for one to be posted to you when you are booking your concert ticket.

If you use a wheelchair and wish to transfer to a seat, we regret we may not be able to provide a member of staff to help you physically. However, we will arrange for your wheelchair to be taken away and stored. A lift is located to the right once inside the Box Office reception allowing access to a lowered Box Office counter. Foyer areas are on the same level as the Box Office and the foyer bar (Oakley Room) is accessed via a wide access lift. Seats within the stalls are accessed via a wide lift as are adapted toilet facilities.

Please note the lift provides access to all levels except the gallery seating areas. Gallery seating can only be accessed via the main stairwell. When travelling to and from the gallery seating areas please allow sufficient time in order to be seated at an appropriate time.

Customers with hearing requirements The Box Office counter is fitted with a loop system to aid customers with any hearing impairment. The auditorium is fitted with an infra-red amplification system. This is not the same as a Loop System so switching your hearing aid to ‘T’ is not sufficient. You will need to use an amplification aid.
