Getting to Know… Name: ■
Phil Toms Curriculum Manager
You have an extremely active musical career outside of the College, tell us about that.
Well, for starters, I am the assistant MD for the English Pop Orchestra, which I am heavily involved in. On top of that I also perform as often as I can both locally and nationally – I play the double bass, synthesizer, piano and bass guitar. In fact I have a tour coming up. I also regularly play piano at the Longleat Safari Park. I involve myself in various musical theatre groups within the local area too, playing or conducting. ■
■
What opportunities are available within the industry?
All our degrees are vocational which means there are a lot of pathways open to the students upon graduating. Many of our students will go on to some sort of practical job, for example, musicians, actors and so on. Some may go to work in the media, backstage or into teaching. Others will use their degree to get into support work jobs, for example, marketing, PR and administration within theatres or concert halls.
That certainly is a lot! Why did you take the step into teaching?
It’s interesting, because I vowed to never become a teacher. However, I have never regretted the decision. I enjoy being able to teach and help develop the musicians of tomorrow. There’s such a variety of talent here at the College and it’s so interesting to watch the students, and their passion for the industry, grow.

Name: Clare Marie Auger Course: BA (Hons) Musical Theatre ■
You have some great experience in the industry already. Tell us more about that.
■
The theatre world is your destiny which you’ve aimed for since you were young. What advice have you got for other budding performers?
To succeed you need lots of industry experience. A lot of my friends have gone on to set up their own theatre companies and perform through them.
My ultimate dream is to be a West End performer. I spent ten years at Songtime Theatre Arts from the age of nine. I also joined the national youth tour of High School Musical as Gabriella. After I completed my BTEC in Dance at Brooklands College in Surrey, a CMPA graduate recommended Colchester Institute to me. ■
What do you think has been the most worthwhile part of the course?
I’ve been taught a lot about audition techniques, how the industry works and what I need to become a performer. The tutors can draw upon their extensive knowledge of the industry so I feel well equipped to achieve my goals. The high standards of the course have stood me in good stead to secure a place at Guildford School of Acting.

MA Music A postgraduate course designed to enhance the professional skills of current music practitioners, whether recent graduates or working professionals.
Who is this course for? This course will suit recent music graduates as well as those already working in the music industry. It provides a broad academic framework for study at this level and beyond, and the ability to specialise in an area which is relevant to the individual. Four specialist subject areas reflect the nature of employment within the profession; performance, composition, music management and education (both mainstream music education and instrumental/vocal tuition in private practice).
Course description The MA in Music can be seen as a ‘taught’ programme which achieves a balance between research and practical elements within a particular area of focus (performance, composition, music management or education). Its modular structure allows both full and part-time study. Relatively small postgraduate numbers facilitate a high level of student support and the potential for students to develop their individual research interests.
Course content In each specialist subject area, the course culminates in a final 60-credit module which is based on practice. This module will be undertaken independently by students with tutorial supervision and seminars to share work in practice. This programme is designed to equip students with the means to work within the profession as well as the potential to enrol for doctoral study.
All students take Research Techniques and Independent Research, plus pathway modules:
Modules by pathway: Performance: Postgraduate Performance 1 and 2 • Postgraduate Performance Project Composition: Postgraduate Composition and Analysis • Postgraduate Applied Composition, Composition Portfolio Music Management: Arts and Policy • Independent Business and Self-Employment • Music Business Placement Education: Musical Pedagogy • Music Curriculum Design • Music in Professional Practice
