When you look through these pages, I hope that every concert will entice you. This season features superstars – like Lang Lang, Yundi, Anne-Sophie Mutter and Vladimir Ashkenazy – great names, unmissable events and some thrilling débuts as well. You will see some innovative types of concerts too, including the new Swire Denim Series for busy urbanites. My hope for our first year together is to get to know you, the HKPO’s friends. In Hong Kong, more than anywhere in the world, orchestral music feels vibrant and young. I really look forward to bringing my programmes to you this season. It is always so exciting to conduct here – I hope that you feel that energy too and that through it we can meet together. I invite you to make great music a part of your life. Whether you do that by joining our new HKPO Chorus, by voting on your favourite works for me to conduct in May, or simply by coming to hear your great orchestra perform, you can share the journey with us!

To begin his tenure he has chosen two young, dynamic musicians – violinist Ning Feng, whose HKPO début was rapturously received in 2011, returns with the iconic Butterfly Lovers Concerto. Conrad Tao is making his name both as a piano virtuoso and a composer. He appears as pianist later this year – by invitation, he has composed a fanfare work for these concerts. Completing the programme, Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony. The van Zweden era begins.

Brahms composed his German Requiem as a work of comfort for the living. Weaving together biblical texts which he himself chose, he created a towering work – a great journey in music. Now treasured as one of the greatest German Romantic works for chorus, this Requiem has not been performed by the HKPO in decades until Jaap chose it as his second inaugural programme.

The young Mendelssohn’s travels in Scotland inspired him to write two masterpieces. The Hebrides depicts the wonders of a remote sea cave. Inspired, Mendelssohn scribbled its opening phrase on a postcard to his sister, and composed the rest quickly afterwards. The Scottish Symphony brims with the energy of folk dance, song and highland colour. As a companion work, Jaap introduces mezzo-soprano Christianne Stotijn to sing Elgar’s Sea Pictures – a song cycle pulsating with the many moods of the sea – sun-kissed, brooding, and stormy music, with a brilliant singer to guide us across it. ʪ ̀ ᅥ ሌ i 12˂ 6ˀ ܱ ౨ ̒ ય ɐ Ʉ ࣂ ʼ ʝ ɻ ʶ ࠑ ᅥ ᜨ உ τ Л ᑟ ࠑᅥผeJoin us for a free Swire Classic Insights talk and concert about this programme: Thursday 6 December at 8pm in the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall.

Not for nothing is it called “the King of Instruments”. The grand organ is a marvel, capable of awesome sound and charming delicacy. In this programme, the Cultural Centre’s 8,000-pipe organ will be centre stage, played by one of the most acclaimed organists in the world, Simon Preston. A double bill of Poulenc and Saint-Saëns showcases the splendour of this amazing instrument to unforgettable effect. Retaining the French flavour of the programme, former HKPO Music Director David Atherton has added a pair of works by Paul Dukas – La Péri Fanfare, and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.

Two Cinderellas of music come to this concert: Smetana’s opera The Bartered Bride is full of lively humour and character, but apart from its overture is rarely heard in the concert hall. Conductor Jahja Ling explores a selection of excerpts. Dvorák’s Cello Concerto in A is a beauty who never gets to go to the ball – its big sister is always invited instead. Steven Isserlis’ impassioned playing of this lyrical work will have you wondering why. And Brahms’ Second Symphony completes the concert with warmth and happy feeling.
ᒾe Emperor Joseph II faced a dilemma: he had to decide what style of opera Viennese audiences should be hearing. There were two options: the Italian style, with florid arias and recitatives, or the German style, with spoken dialogue and simpler vocal writing. So he arranged a contest and commissioned two composers to extol each style – they just happened to be Salieri and Mozart. Each created a sparkling work, to be performed at a special competition dinner. Who won? And who should have won? We’ll let you decide at this unique recreation of the original programme.

Spain’s fiery passion has kindled some of the most colourful music of all time. Whether on the operatic stage, in the Russian orchestral hall, or at the Parisian theatre, Spain has the power to stir the imagination with powerful rhythms and languid melody. Portuguese conductor Joana Carneiro explores a programme of this great music. The HKPO is proud to present guitar firebrand Miloš Karadaglic, playing the best loved of all guitar concertos – Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez.

ᐜc̳ΡሁԭࠖɩొೄԾۗςؿቂӫe The HKPO is proud to present one of the legendary violinists of the world, Anne-Sophie Mutter. In this programme she plays not one but two full-length works – a feast for lovers of her incredible technique and musicianship. American composer Sebastian Currier wrote Time Machines especially for Mutter – an exploration of music’s ethereal nature, literally “sound in time”. Dvorák’s jewel of a concerto captures all the romantic lyricism of the violin. And to balance the radiance of these two works, Janácek’s stirring fantasy Taras Bulba broods on themes of heroic death and battle.

ٛցય̦ಳ⾫കୣʺऋؿԙАe In 2012 the HKPO gave an impromptu all-Bach concert; audiences flocked to hear the orchestra playing the immortal music of just one composer. In 2013, we turn to Mozart, with master interpreter Gérard Korsten at the helm. Stay tuned for the programme details, but be ready for an evening of the very best of music’s most poignant genius.

The Symphony and Shostakovich became powerful symbols of defiance: that life would go on, and that music is more powerful than war. Melvyn Tan, whose scholarly and expert performances of Mozart have made him acclaimed around the world, returns to our stage with the poignant Twenty-second.

A musical giant of our time, his concerts are always thrilling, his interpretations sublimely artistic. These concerts mark his début in the HKPO’s season, and feature aptly passionate masterworks. Sibelius’ Fifth Symphony, a heroic celebration of Finland’s native wonders, evokes profound darkness and gleaming light. Richard Strauss’ Don Juan captures the blustering romance of a reckless lover. Then, from much later in Strauss’ life, the Four Last Songs mark a farewell to life and love.

Mark Wigglesworth dazzled in his 2011 HKPO début. In intriguing return concerts, he teams with insightful piano virtuoso Stephen Hough to perform both of Liszt’s piano concertos. From storms to dreamlike meditations, these works capture Liszt’s musical poetry. Framing them are works with aristocratic connections – to mark his centenary year, Britten’s Sinfonia da Requiem, a provocative tribute to the Japanese Emperor which caused a diplomatic scandal. Haydn’s Ninetieth Symphony, composed for the Paris elite, featuring one of his daring musical jokes designed to catch his audience out – if you like bursting into applause when the music finishes, you’d better sit on your hands at this concert!

Symphony No.3 Eroica
The most heroic of composers, Beethoven, penned his Third Symphony with Napoleon in mind. It became a celebration of the ‘Heroic’ nature of all humanity. ‘Eroica’ inspires and thrills, and Polish conductor Antoni Wit is one of its greatest interpreters. Saint-Saëns’ Second Piano Concerto begins in homage to his hero Bach, but the mood nimbly changes to Parisian jollity for Argentinean pianist Ingrid Fliter. The concert begins with an anti-hero: the noble count who dares to go hunting on Sunday when he should be in church. Heaven’s punishment – he himself will be hunted by terrifying demons for all eternity!

Making his HKPO début in this concert is one of the most exciting conductors on the world stage – American maestro Hugh Wolff. He’ll be the very first conductor to take on Chen Qigang’s latest work, receiving its world première in these concerts. Chen Qigang’s music is iconic orchestral sound in the Chinese idiom, and we are excited to have commissioned a major work from this great composer. Culminating in Rachmaninov’s late work, the Symphonic Dances, this concert promises a night of infectious rhythms. Join us for the birth of a new masterpiece!

Our cycle of Rachmaninov concertos starring Simon Trpceski reaches its climax in these concerts. The Fourth Concerto was composed in the United States – and includes more than a hint of New York jazz energy. The initial failure of his First Symphony famously scarred its composer for years – but more recently this work has been recognised for its many beautiful Rachmaninov moments. His gothic tone poem The Rock opens the concert in dark and mysterious style. ʪ̀ᅥሌi6˂20ˀ ܱ౨̒ યɐɄࣂʼʝɻʶࠑᅥᜨஉτЛᑟࠑᅥ ผeJoin us for a free Swire Classic Insights talk and concert about this programme: Thursday 20 June at 8pm in the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall.

Original, innovative, shocking: three conductors bring a fresh new take on three very personal works of genius that were at the cutting edge of musical expression in their day. Berlioz imagined a castle full of brigands and created his melodramatic overture Le Corsaire. Chausson was inspired by a tale of lost love and exotic lands, Ravel by a night of gipsy melodies – both penned virtuoso knockouts for violin and orchestra. Brahms laboured long and hard over his First Symphony – fifteen years or more. The result is a monumental work of high art, imbued with a deeply personal feeling.

Long known as the Titan Symphony, Mahler’s First is actually his briefest, but it still “contains the whole world” – Mahler’s aim for his symphonies. Here, distant birdsong gives way to triumphant brass fanfares; a lover’s serenade becomes a dizzying dance; and Frère Jacques becomes a funeral procession for a hunter, with all the forest animals paying their respects. Mozart’s witty and spirited Twenty-first, with its dainty middle movement, is perhaps Mozart’s best-loved piano concerto. Modern-day virtuoso pianist and composer, Conrad Tao, makes his performing début with the HKPO.

The scandal of the première ended in a riot. This programme marks this centenary by recreating the programme that first audience heard – Chopin’s delightful waltzes in orchestral form, evoking the elegance of classical ballet, followed by the violence and mayhem of Stravinsky’s master work. Patrons are encouraged to refrain from rioting! As a tribute to the city where this took place, the programme begins with the Paris Symphony – Mozart’s salute to Parisian style.

Sinfonia Antartica will tell the story in music, words and pictures of the fateful Scott expedition to the South Pole. A true tale of heroic failure, Captain Scott’s story still resonates today with the spirit of the great explorers. Cantus Arcticus captures another aspect of life at the Poles – the sound of birdcalls on the frozen wastelands joins with orchestra to produce an amazing atmosphere. Bax’s Tintagel portrays a ruined castle on a headland in stormy waters – a night of epic vision and sound.

Holst wrote his epic suite to depict the diverse characters of the planets in our night sky, and for such a monumental project he employs an enormous orchestra. In these final performances of our season, we’ll be projecting high resolution images of each planet while the orchestra plays. In collaboration with the Hong Kong Space Museum, there will be other stargazing activities in Tsimshatsui for this concert – cloud cover permitting!
