Commodore’s Message First, congratulations to everyone who turned out for the Electoral General Meeting on 10 June.
The Bridge
By all accounts, it was one of, if not THE most attended EGM on record. This epitomises the health of our Club and specifically the active involvement of its members. Yet beyond simple participation, it is also our individual and collective duty to ensure we are diligent and informed in our choices. Many view this great exercise as something to be dispensed with alacrity, ticking a box here or currying favour there. As the sitting chair of the Nominating Committee, we do spend a rather long time trying to identify suitable candidates, new blood for your consideration. These and those put forward by fellow members deserve that you personally assess objectively their candidacy. I therefore respectfully urge you to spend time and indeed some effort to know them better and determine whether they, individually and/or collectively, will be able to steer the Club in these turbulent times. In the final analysis, this is what matters, will you trust them at the helm of the boat in a gale! To those that were elected, welcome and take heed. And to those who fell short, don’t give up, we need passionate and dedicated people – and there is always the next EGM to have another go! Commodore Denis Martinet

On to sailing and the most recent Spring Regatta Sponsored by HSBC Expat saw a record 118 boats entered. Many thanks to Barry Truhol and his race management team, together with the sailing and marine staff for an enjoyable weekend. Another record was also set that Sunday with the temperature getting as high as 36.1ºC at the Observatory weather station. The risk of dehydration is very real as we found out when a young member was hospitalised as a result. We are very happy to hear from her parents that she is well on her way to recovery. So these risks are not to be taken lightly so please hydrate and have sufficient liquid, and I mean water, on board! Whilst that weekend wrapped up the formal sailing season, we have the St James’s Place Sunset Series now underway with hopefully a third of the races completed with five more to go in July and three in August. The Rowing and Paddle Sports Section is also launching its own Sunset Series on Thursday evenings through the summer taking the opportunity to get the wider R&PS community together at Kellett Island to row and paddle in Victoria Harbour at sunset. The first event is on 8 July and will run for 8 consecutive Thursdays featuring two C4X+ and two OC6s each evening. My thanks to the approximately 1,600 members who completed our vaccine survey in May. At that time, 95% of the respondents were either fully vaccinated, had taken the first dose or indicated an intention to get vaccinated. That was and is very positive news indeed and led to the Club taking the first step forwards opening up. Starting in June the Compass Room and Steakhouse opened for dinner under Type C regulations meaning larger table sizes and later dining hours. At the time of writing more measures to open are in the pipeline and indeed may have been implemented by the time you read this. It has been a long wait but the Main Bar may be back soon…
RHKYC Charity Foundation – Turtle Mascot Design Winner! As announced in the recent monthly Club video, Jocelyn Kwok is the winner of the Turtle Mascot Design Competition! Congratulations Jocelyn! Here she is with her winning design along with Ambrose Lo, Chairman of the RHKYC Charity Foundation and Commodore Denis Martinet. Jocelyn applied a mandala design to the top shell of the turtle. The turtle head is coloured in a progressive rainbow colour. ‘Protect the Environment’ is written at the belly of the turtle with the aim of highlighting the message that we should all be environmentally friendly. There is a chained “Love” on the rims of the shells with a warm colour background. This reinforces the importance for us to protect the environment.

General Manager’s Message For a fair while now our events have been ‘flying off the shelves’ and are booked up very quickly. There are many reasons for this. Part of their incredible popularity is of course, the variety on offer, their good value and the fact that with so many members and their friends not travelling, everyone is looking for new and exciting things to do here at the Club. With increasing levels of vaccinations hopefully the government will ease the social distancing measures which will allow us to increase the capacity and table sizes in our clubhouses.

Since there still isn’t much ‘real’ travelling going on, don’t worry the Club has that sorted. Here’s your summer itinerary …15 July New Zealand, 16 July Texas, 29 July Ireland, 5 August Italy, 12 August Washington, 13 August Greece and 21 August Holland. Out of all the many (many!) wine dinners we host each year, the Cloudy Bay Wine Dinner really is ‘up there’ in the popularity stakes. It’s back again on 15 July and you don’t want to miss this little sojourn to New Zealand to experience these excellent wines paired with an exquisite menu. The very next day at Middle Island the carnivores amongst you can indulge to your heart’s content with a Texas BBQ. You have a little break to get over your excesses before we head to Ireland to experience the single malt whiskies of Singleton, Mortlach, Glenkinchie and Caol Ila. From there it’s a skip across to Italy for the Canaletto Wine Dinner and a chance to immerse yourselves in Italy. A week later, you might think you are headed to France for the Chateau Ste. Michelle Estate Wine Dinner but names can be deceiving and you’re actually headed to Washington, USA! Now, we already made a trip to Greece last April, but the ‘flight’ was full, so by popular demand we are headed back there on 13 August, book early to avoid disappointment. After Greece, we make our final stop of the summer in Holland for the Annual ‘Mussel Party’ with Les Jamelles Wines. This event is always SO popular we have to publish the date for when bookings will open, so that everyone can get to the starter’s box. We can’t take everyone so make sure you are ready to book starting at 1000hrs on Thursday 8 July. Details on this amazing gastronomic trip around the world can be found on pages 41 to 47. As I am sure you are all aware, the Kellett Island and Shelter Cove carparks are for the use of members with a valid parking label and for members’ guests who have been registered in advance. After long and careful consideration, General Committee has decided to implement a guest parking fee at Kellett Island which will be introduced with effect from 1 August. Under the new arrangement Members’ guests will be charged a parking fee of $10 per hour on weekdays and $20 per hour on weekends and public holidays. Octopus and credit card readers have been installed at the entrance and exit gates of the car park and the amount to be charged will be deducted on departure. Please be reminded that there are limited guest parking spaces available and host members are required to advise Reception in advance of the arrival of guests’ vehicles and that such registration does not guarantee a parking space. The security guards on duty at the entrance gates have sole discretion to refuse entry to any vehicle in the event that the car park is already full upon their arrival. Lastly, the Club had previously shared the news that we had recruited a new Club Operations Manager to take over from Jacco Klip, who has now left the Club. Unfortunately, at the very last minute the candidate backed out and whilst frustratingly we now find ourselves back to the drawing board, but it’s also an opportunity. We have initially recruited a very capable candidate on an interim basis whilst the recruitment process progresses and the good news is that he was able to have a couple of weeks of handover with Jacco before he departed to ensure we keep up business as usual. Enjoy your summer and if you are in fact getting on an aeroplane and reconnecting with family and friends overseas, have a wonderful time and we look forward to seeing everyone back here in the Autumn refreshed and recharged for a busy season of sailing, rowing and paddling.

The Bridge

Feature | Spring Regatta Sponsored by HSBC Expat This year Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club’s last major event of the sailing season, the Spring Regatta Sponsored by HSBC Expat was held over the weekend of 23 and 24 May, one of the hottest days ever recorded in May in Hong Kong. With the mercury hitting 36.1ºC on the second day of racing, it was far from the spring-like conditions of its namesake!

record 118 boats signed up for the two-day regatta which comprised of three races. The first race was held on the Saturday with 10 starts across 12 divisions and classes. The race fleet included 33 Big Boats split into four divisions as well as the Sportsboats and one design classes – Dragons, Etchells, Flying Fifteens, Impalas, J/80s, Ruffians and Pandoras – all of whom gathered in the start area around Kowloon Bay. The day kicked off with an incredible blue sky and soaring temperatures. While a southerly breeze of around 10kts was clocked in the starting area, the towering shadow of Hong Kong Island led to the wind softening, occasionally down to 3kts, out in the eastern reaches of the Harbour.

A RHKYC regatta highlight was the first appearance of four TP52s: Alpha+, Freefire, Phoenix and Rampage88 lining up for a dedicated TP52 start. “The TP52 is considered as the Formula 1 of monohull yacht racing. We love the high speeds and the exceptional power to weight ratio, however it’s physically demanding for Asian sailors with smaller body builds. TP52s have huge sails therefore downwind speeds can top 20+kts. Compared to class boats we have less running rigging so it’s pure speed and fun!” said Noel Chan, owner of Rampage88. Team Rampage, the newest edition to the Hong Kong TP52 scene, has taken the acquisition of their new boat very seriously, employing Volvo Ocean Race veteran Matthew Humphries, as their coach to get up to speed in a short three months to be race ready. While Phoenix was the only “all local Hong Kong” TP52 team at the Spring Regatta, Kelvin Cheung, Phoenix’s trimmer said “as an all Chinese crew, weight and body build are undoubtedly our weakness compared with other TP52 teams, however we are more dexterous and flexible which makes up the loss.” Race Officer Barry Truhol sent the TP52s along with IRC Division 1 on a 14.6nm course out of the Harbour towards Shek O Rock and back while the other two Big Boat divisions were sent on a shorter course of 11.37nm. The Class Boats were sent on 2.5 to 3 laps around PWD, Kowloon Bay and Tai Koo Shing with distances of approximately 5nm to 11.37nm. The day culminated in an impressive sight as all the yachts finished at PWD, with the Big Boats mixing it up with the Class boats. JUL/AUG 2021 AHOY! |

Feature | Spring Regatta Sponsored by HSBC Expat On the Sunday, Hong Kong turned on yet another superb day for Day 2 of racing. Showcasing Hong Kong yachting at its best, over 100 yachts sailed two races in a gentle 8 to 9 kts easterly breeze. No doubt to the envy of those watching from hotel quarantine in Hung Hom, Race Officer Barry Truhol started the first race of the day in that area and sent the fleet on courses within Victoria Harbour. With a target time of one hour, all boats enjoyed very close competitive racing. As the breeze continued to build up to 14kts, longer courses with a target time of two hours were set for the third and final race of the Regatta. The TP52s and IRC Divisions 1 and 2 were able to stretch their legs and enjoy a longer course out to Shek O Rock and Junk Bay, whilst HKPN and the class boats remained in the Harbour. Race Officer Barry Truhol hoped everyone enjoyed their sailing, commenting after racing “when we went out to check the wind on Sunday morning, there was breeze from the east and south-east;

however, nothing close to the forecasted southerly. Finally, the race management team decided to pick the easterly courses and luckily the decision worked out fine. We had a solid, stable easterly breeze for at least six hours. We had two races with good breeze and not too much tide and a fantastic backdrop. What more could we ask for!” Almost all Big Boat division winners of Day 1 stayed at the top after the second day of racing. TP52 Alpha+ remained strong with three bullets in hand enabling them to lift the trophy, while Freefire, Rampage88 and Phoenix all took a second in individual races, with Freefire taking second overall in TP52 Division – one point ahead of Phoenix. Ambush and Red Kite 2 both maintained their leads in IRC Division 1 and Division 2 respectively. With Saturday’s leader Jibulai retiring from both races, Baby Beluga climbed from 3rd to 1st place with a stable performance in the HKPN Division. and Ruffian Buster kept their leads in their divisions lifting their respective trophies. In the biggest participating class, Etchells, Les Freaks Sont Chic retained their first overall, one point ahead of Noddy. Impala Rainbow Chaser climbed from second place to first overall by only one point ahead of Taxi. J/80 Tigrina claimed a first and a second to win their division. Hong Kong 49er FX team Molly Highfield and Sandy Choi, who narrowly missed to qualify Hong Kong for the 49er FX at the Tokyo Olympics, joined their first non-dinghy racing event. Molly helmed Sportsboat F.A.B in the Spring Regatta, with Sandy and Sandy’s mother Wendy Lee on board as crew. Molly admitted that she was not familiar with racing on larger yachts, “This was is our second time sailing on the VX One. Our goal was minimising the mistakes we would make and to enjoy the race.” At the end of day 2, F.A.B took three bullets and guaranteed their first place in their division. JUL/AUG 2021 AHOY! |

Global Women’s Sailing Festival ‘Steering the Course’ launched in 2021 Hong Kong’s Inaugural All-Women Regatta W O RD S: EL AINE PICKERIN G | B OAT IM AGES: PA NDA M A N / TA KUMI IM AGES
he inaugural global women’s sailing festival ‘Steering the Course’, a 10-day series of activities on and off the water, was a resounding success in Hong Kong and made history by being the first all-women sailing festival held here. Steering the Course, supported by the IOC Development Fund (Olympic Solidarity Commission) was established to introduce

women and girls across the globe to sailing, as well as to encourage those already engaged towards further developing their skills. This inaugural year the event took place in the Northern Hemisphere from 21 to 30 May 2021 and it will take place in the Southern Hemisphere from 1 to 10 October 2021. Seasoned sailor, Juliet Ashton, galvanised and spearheaded the programme of events in Hong
Kong, supported by a group of enthusiastic volunteers from HHYC, RHKYC, ABC. HHYC, with Sailability Hong Kong, operated the programme of activities, with The Capital Company and Beaufort Marine sponsoring the festival. The initiative was supported by the Hong Kong Sailing Federation who attended the opening ceremony along with other dignitaries.
Women on Water During the festival week 353 women participated in activities both on and off the water, including competitive racing, a fitnessfor-sailing programme, taster sessions, social events and inspirational talks.

One popular activity was a chance to experience sailing a 38ft Seawind Catamaran. Sytske Kimman offered her boat Moments
to make several sailings around Port Shelter, providing an opportunity for 78 women to helm, manage the sails and learn key aspects of handling a big boat. After sailing in Hong Kong for 36 years Sytske commented, “This is the most positive experience of sailing I have had here. I met a fantastic group of women who deserve to be getting a chance to learn about sailing.” JUL/AUG 2021 AHOY! |

Feature | Steering the Course Sailability Hong Kong had an incredible 10 days, over the course of which they took out 176 women, 61 of whom went out for the first time. This included women from the Disabled Women’s Association, SEN School, Golden Age sailors, ethnic community groups and amputees. Many new volunteers signed up during the festival to support this active charity, with Mercedes-Benz and HFW sponsorship covering all costs, including the many instructors, safety boats and all the other support that was needed to work with less advantaged participants, including some quite critically disabled people. The final regatta for Sailability, held in Port Shelter, had 26 boats entered in three classes; 14 Hansa 303s, three Hansa Liberty’s and nine 2.4mRs. The excitement was electrifying, and it was a wonderful experience for all involved. A huge shout out goes to Kay Rawbone and a multitude of volunteers, including HHYC for coping with all the complicated logistics. RHKYC takes Regatta Honours A highlight of the festival was the first Hong Kong women-only sailing regatta. An impressive 19 boats were entered into the three divisions with 87 women of all ages and skills participating. RHKYC, entered three J/80 teams, two RS Quest teams and one

HKPN Division team to compete in this interclub three-race challenge. The races were managed by an all-women committee with RO Inge Strompf-Jepsen, DRO Sarah Houghton and ARO Lucy Sutro providing on-the-job training to a team of ladies new to race management, all of whom quickly picked up on their duties. As many of the participating sailors had not sailed together before, the RO, through a democratic vote, agreed to postpone the start of the first race by 30 minutes to allow for some practice. However, it was not evident by the high level of sailing that all the teams were newly formed, with many never having sailed the design of boats they were competing on until the lead up to the competition. Notwithstanding missing winch handles, a broken tiller leading to unmanageable steerage (causing those looking on from the committee boat much consternation!), a broken mast, and a broken toe strap sending crew overboard, the display of sailing ability was impressive. With 12 to 15kts of wind the windward / leeward course set in Port Shelter was ably and enthusiastically raced. The final results of the competition saw the RHKYC J/80 team helmed by Scotia Ryer taking the honours, with second place going to the RHKYC team helmed by Tiffany Koo; RHKYC team on Arcturus, helmed
by Florence Kan, took second place in HKPN Division; and RHKYC RS Quest team helmed by Gina Chen took second place. J/80 captain Christina Cully commented, “It was amazing to participate in such a fun regatta where women from various yacht clubs and sailing classes came together and shared knowledge, capabilities and experience, encouraging us all to become better sailors.” RS Quest crew Chloe Bischoff and Trinh Hoang signed up for their first ever race. Chloe said, “In the first race our hiking strap came unhooked and, comically, we both went overboard. Gina successfully avoided capsizing, and, fortuitously, managed to confuse the other boats who wondered if the race had finished. So, despite two out of three of us being flung into the water, and us being in stiches for the remainder of the race, we managed to maintain our leading position to come first in the first race. It was a really thrilling adventure.” Kristen Chatellier was delighted that she was able to helm for the first time in a race. A recently joined member who has been taking sailing lessons through the introductory scheme she said, “This was an amazing opportunity to get more involved. The confidence to helm was thanks to the great instruction at Middle Island and
Organiser Juliet said, “It was an absolutely fantastic 10 days. The festival introduced and re-introduced so many women and girls to sailing. It’s been wonderful see the enthusiasm from those who had little confidence in their sailing abilities, either because they hadn’t dare try or had an incident that put them off. That’s what has made this festival a success; not just that we pulled this off during complicated times, but, more importantly, that we have women and girls signing up for more.”

the incredible support and camaraderie from all the Royal Ladies who took part. I think we swam away with the prize for most capsizes, but I’m so pleased to have done it and can’t wait to do more.” Big thanks go to Bo Lee for co-ordinating the RHKYC competitive teams, all the helms for organising their respective teams, and the keen-spirited crews who enthusiastically jumped into taking part. Well Supported The festival was well supported by teams of men, some of whom gave their time to coach, lay marks and operate safety boats. They were also well able to assist with the draining of several bottles of post-regatta Prosecco that were waiting for the returning boats, all shared with good grace, gratitude and much merriment. Mark Ashton said, “One of the great things about the sport of sailing is that it is a sport for life; from youth to advanced age.
It is also a sport that allows men and women to compete together. Unfortunately, our statistics don’t currently reflect that. The energy, sheer fun and high standard on display at the women’s Regatta sends a clear message that this is a sport for women and we must do more to make it more accessible for them.” Encouragement Laughter was frequently heard throughout the festival. One participant created a smile and a few knowing nods when she quipped, “I love sailing with the guys I race with, but they usually take charge and it has been a tremendous boost to realise I know more than I think I know and I’m actually quite a capable sailor even without being told what to do!” Poignantly, one volunteer told of how she had lost her live-aboard yacht during Typhoon Mangkhut and had sustained a difficult injury during the salvage process. Not venturing
The whole event had a spirit of co-operation, camaraderie and possibility about it. There are not only a good number of highly-skilled women sailors, rowers and other water sport enthusiasts involved in competitive racing in Hong Kong, but a whole host of women who participate in many support activities, or who simply enjoy being skilled enough to take to the water for exercise and leisure. The festival provided inspiration and encouragement to those women who would like to learn and get more involved. It is an aim of the Club to continue to support the development of women engaged in water sports, at all levels, with inter-class women crew networks being established and further all-women activities being planned. A big thanks to all who participated in this inaugural festival. We now have some tremendous collective enthusiasm from which to further develop the participation of women. onto the water since, friends had encouraged her to participate in the opening J/80 friendly race. She said, “Two weeks after Mangkhut my home in the UK got flooded and when I was heading to the Isle of Wight the ferry I was supposed to be on, and luckily didn’t take, ran aground in fog. It was such a stressful time that I became convinced I was jinxed and avoided anything to do with getting on the water. But, surrounded and encouraged by awesome ladies this week, I have found my sea legs again.”

Feature | Making Sailing Accessible to EVERYONE
Sailability Hong Kong specialises in offering the opportunity to sail as a sport and recreational activity, which is not always accessible to all due to a variety of reasons – be it physical disability, mental health issues, learning disabilities or socioeconomic reasons. The team at Sailability are skilled at breaking down the barriers within the community and offering practical support, inspiration, and encouragement to make sailing accessible to everyone.
A
s part of celebrating the recent World Sailing inaugural Global Women’s Sailing Festival, with the aim to introduce women and girls across the globe to the sport of sailing via a dedicated weeklong program established by World Sailing, Sailability Hong Kong Co-Founder Kay Rawbone recognised the opportunity to encourage female disability sailors to the sport. Over the 27 and 28 of May 2021, 20 ladies from the Association of Women with Disabilities Hong Kong (AWDHK) were given the opportunity to get out on the water through the assistance of Sailability HK, out of their HHYC base. Kay Rawbone was heartened to see the drive and determination of past wheelchair sailor Leung On Ki, Angel in initiating the outing for the group. Angel had encouraged 19 fellow wheelchair colleagues to attend. While apprehensive about the challenges involved, they were all eager inductees to sailing as part of this worldwide female-based initiative.

Sailability also specifically sought out and encouraged a stronger female-based volunteer group to be involved for these days. The specific challenges of having female physical disability sailors attending a sailing session for the first time needed to be recognised, as just getting in the boat can be the biggest challenge of the day and can be quite intimidating if not handled with care. Kay noted that having the support of females to help with the delicate manoeuvring of the ladies in and out of the boats on the day, while offering female associated reassurance, goes a long way towards giving these new sailors added confidence to let them enjoy their time out on the water. Instrumental in coordinating the outing for her association, Leung On Ki, Angel of AWDHK expressed her sheer joy in being part of the Sailability Sessions and sharing the precious experience with her colleagues. As a seasoned sailor boasting 18 months experience of sailing within the Sailability community, she explained that encouraging

and nurturing new events outside of the group’s regular activities are important, particularly given the limiting restrictions enforced by using of a wheelchair. Angel explained that one of the biggest obstacles for wheelchair bound attendees was reassuring them of the accessibility to participate in a new activity. “Many participants are very concerned about the problems that are associated with getting in and out of the boat and their ability to cope once on the water.” With the assistance of the specific female-based volunteers to help, she said the intimidating concerns of being handled by strangers were very quickly overcome and all the participants embraced the help with the challenging task of getting out of their restrictive wheelchairs and into the boats.

Recognising the benefits of finding a new interest, a new skill set and all while enhancing overall quality of life, Sailability offers the opportunity to anyone experiencing a disability to participate in the sport of sailing. They can also provide the necessary framework to enable training to those having ambition and determination to participate in local, regional, and international events. Sailing is a sport that is unique in its ability to offer the ‘inclusivity’ of having the opportunity to compete against able bodied sailors on a ‘level playing field’, giving greater confidence and independence to both women and men with disabilities. Opening Up Protest Hearings Sailing
Protest hearings are simply part of the rules, and are sailing’s equivalent to say, a soccer referee’s or a cricket umpire’s decision. Protest hearings are the means to resolve those disputes which aren’t resolved during the gameplay (i.e. on the water), which is often the case in our sport.
Y
et, utterance of those very words ‘Protest Hearing’ seems to strike terror into the minds of many sailors (young/old salty-dogs or newcomers alike), such that they feel protests should be avoided at all costs. Unfortunately, avoiding protest hearings doesn’t benefit anyone or our sport. Rule breaches go unpaid for and, in some cases, the wrong boat wins as a result. Most of all though, no one learns or improves when the rules are not enforced.

The Club’s Race Management subcommittee (RMsC) is now actively promoting ‘Open Protest Hearings’ to widen the protest hearing experience to ‘Observers’ – sailors/coaches/parents/landlubbers* like you. (*Delete as appropriate!)

Being part of a protest hearing need not be anything other than a positive experience: a chance for learning and a way to resolve issues. Of course, as a party in a hearing, sometimes you will lose, but just like in any other sport, that’s part of the game.
4 1
1
Not all protest hearings will or can be ‘Open Protest Hearings’ mind you, as explained later. However, when possible, we now encourage those people with a genuine interest in the hearing process to join as observers. Being an Observer The protest hearing system has long allowed for ‘Observers’ to attend hearings. Rather like those in the ‘viewers’ gallery’ of a courtroom, observers aren’t part of the hearing – they just observe. Although this provision has been in the rules for some time, it is not well known or utilised. RMsC plans to go one step further by encouraging observers to attend hearings. Essentially, the aim is to open up hearings to anyone who may be interested in learning more. Hence they are called ‘Open Protest Hearings’. The main reason for open hearings is education – it’s a great way for sailors to learn more about the hearing process and learn the racing rules. There are a number of other benefits to open hearings: • Coaches who observe will be able to give feedback to their sailors on their performance. • Sailors who observe protest hearings may feel less intimidated if/ when they are protested in the future. • Sailors can get a better understanding of the racing rules and how they are applied. • Sailors who are on the protesting or protested boat may find it interesting too. Of course, there are some rules for Open Hearings and the observers. For example, a protest hearing will only be ‘Open’ if all the parties and all the protest committee agree to it being ‘Open’. At any time, the protest chairman may ask observers to leave. Hearings concerning very personal or sensitive issues will not be Open Hearings. This means that protests regarding RRS 2 (Fair Sailing) or RRS 69 (Misconduct) will never be opened to observers. Hearings which make good ‘Open Hearings’ are ones regarding ‘boat-on-boat’ protests. Fortunately, those are also usually the most interesting to observe anyway. Observers strictly take no part in the hearing, not even as a witness. Recording or videoing is strictly not allowed. Normally observers should be asked to leave when the protest committee deliberate, but this is up to the protest chairman. All these rules will be explained in detail by the protest chairman at the time of the hearing. How can I be an Observer? The simple answer is, ask! If you are interested in observing, simply ask the Sailing Office whether you can join as an observer. At major RHKYC events (when protests are held immediately after each day’s racing), the Sailing Office will list the protests on the ‘Hearing Schedule’ board, and may in future use that notice board to indicate whether the hearings are open to observers. For protest hearings after a weekend’s class racing (normally held on Monday nights), the best way to show interest is to inform the Sailing Office that you would like to be on the observer list. They will then let you know when open hearings are scheduled. Meanwhile, sail safe and have fun.

s the summer heat descended upon Hong Kong, competitors in the coastal rowing scene spent the month of May preparing for the 65th Head of the Bay regatta. Held on 22 May, the Head of the Bay was the first race of the year to take place under proper summer conditions; testing crews’ speed alongside their ability to navigate turns and obstacles in Deepwater Bay – either over a short course of 2,500m or a long course of 4,200m. The morning dawned after a night of showers and the water was flat and calm with little wind. Volunteers arrived at 0730hrs to prepare for what

would be a long day of directing crews, wrangling boats, timekeeping and keeping competitors safe on the course from RIBs. There was much to be done before the racing kicked off at 0900hrs. 91 boats were entered into the Head of the Bay, rowed by more than 180 competitors from eight different clubs, ranging in age and experience from middle school students to seasoned masters rowers. The racing started off strong with the Open C4x+ setting the fastest time of the day on the long course in the first race. As the racing continued, juniors, novices, university and masters rowers competed in boats of

all sorts, from singles and doubles to coxed quads and coxed fours. For some of the middle school students on the precipice of summer vacation, the Head of the Bay was their final race of the season. And for others, like RHKYC Member Koichi Ohira, it was their final race with the Club before moving away from Hong Kong. Despite the 34-degree heat, rowers showed up to compete, putting up some impressive times on the course. The fastest raw times of the day on the short course were set by Andrew Lawson (LBC) in the Open 1x at 13:07 for the men, and by Isa Scheunpflug and Rachel Humphreys
(RHKYC/LBC) in the Women’s Masters 2x at 14:23 for the women. On the long course, Calvin Tang, Kelvin Chu, Matthew Lai and Chris Knollman, coxed by Abi Watt (RHKYC), set the men’s fastest time at 18:09 while the women’s was set by Estelle Davies, Chi Wai Song, Jasmine Monteil and Lisa Williams, coxed by Marianne Kolding (LBC) at 22:09. But while most competitors were focused on rowing their best races, some showed up with the intent to do some good while they were at Middle Island. Throughout the course of the day, rowers diligently removed litter from the beach on which most of the boats and people were gathered – a simple but helpful gesture that brought the Club’s focus on sustainability to light. As climate and environmental issues rise in importance, measures like the RHKYC Pick Up Plastic initiative, debuting at Middle Island in the form of plastic-collection bags that allow rowers to scoop up litter while out on the water, empower individuals to tackle the increase of plastic in our environment. The Head of the Bay proved to be a successful day, bringing together people of all ages and skill levels to compete side by side at Middle Island. As always, the fun continues. Although summer has arrived with a vengeance, we can be sure that the enthusiasm of our rowing community will continue, and crews can be found preparing for the next competition. JUL/AUG 2021 AHOY! |

Middle Island Cup – Turns Heads in the Bay! W O RD S: J O ROY D S - J O NES | IM AGES: RHK YC
O
n 9 May the Club managed to achieve a feat in holding, for the third consecutive year, the Middle Island Cup (MI Cup) for Dragon Boating. This is a big achievement when all other dragon boat races have been cancelled for the past couple of years due to the ongoing Covid situation. The MI Cup is fast becoming an established event on the dragon boat racing calendar. Each year it has gained more and more support, seen in the increase in the number of teams entering. For the second year in a row the race course format covered a course of 1km and involved two tight left turns around course buoys which, for a dragon boat, is not an easy manoeuvre to do so steers play a major part in making or breaking a race. Racing kicked off in the morning with the women’s standard boats. The Royal X women were able to quickly get their heads in to the game and proceeded to the semi-finals

and then on to the finals where they faced SMUGs. The women gave it their all in the final and took the win! Up next was the mixed standards where Royal X unfortunately did not live up to expectations given the talent across the team and they were knocked out in the second round. Buzz Dragons put on a strong performance and went on to win the mixed standards pipping VRC to the finish line by a mere second. Following the mixed standards was the open standard category. The Royal X men put on a solid performance progressing to the finals with ease. Saving their best performance for the finals they set the fastest time of the day by a clear margin. The best of the men’s team is still yet to come and will definitely be the team to beat at upcoming races. The afternoon moved to small boat racing with the women kicking off the session. Once again the Royal X women were able to prove their mettle, maintaining their awesome winning streak. Then the mixed small boats and the first heat saw Royal X Blue face Royal X Yellow. It was a tight race with both crews giving it their all. In the end Royal X Blue managed to pip Yellow to the win by just one second. Royal X Blue progressed through the heats and made it through to the finals and had they not had a slight wobble around the final turn taking on a fair bit of water it would have been a close finish with VRC who looked strong all afternoon. The Open Small boats rounded off the day’s racing. For many in the Royal X men’s small boat, it was the first time racing and they put on a valiant effort against VRC. However, VRC the eventual winners of the Open Small category were too strong this time for Royal X. The results of the day meant that Royal X where able to regain the overall MI Cup Trophy having lost it to SeaGods the year prior. Overall, a very successful day for Royal X. As always with events like these a big thank you to those who helped organise the race and all the volunteers on the day. Plus Patrick Bin Service Manager – Middle Island (F&B) and his team who helped water and feed the dragon boat participants on the day. JUL/AUG 2021 AHOY! |

nything new and unfamiliar is made for me. I was born curious and curiosity was the driver for me to join the summer 2019 Outrigger Introduction Course at the Club. A video of the RHKYC Open Crew racing 45km in Hawaii was enough to lead me to the first training. That first training became a full-on four months of early (too early!) alarm clocks
outrigger@rhkyc.org.hk
We all know what 2020 was about: Covid-19, restrictions, travel bans, quarantines, sports on and off. That crazy thing I did happened to be the smartest choice ever and it became the tool of my paddling journey in Covid-19 times. Exactly a year ago my paddling map had probably only been a 2km coverage. The little waves looked as huge as waterfalls and the soft breeze felt as strong as a typhoon (I still have those feelings sometimes!) I started to cover a bit more distance putting flags down on the paddling map and repeating to myself: “I didn’t come this far to only come this far”, knowing that little changes would add up over time. Was it easy? No! Was it fun? Yes, endlessly! What made the biggest difference? The people!
and OC6 training sessions which ended with two amazing races: the Around Lamma 2019 with a mixed crew which won the category and ATIR 2019 with the women’s B boat getting the bronze medal. While looking forward to the start of the 2020 season, I did something a little crazy. After only one time on an OC1, I decided to purchase one. Was it crazy? Well, enough to need a friend to paddle it on a 3km distance just to get it stored as I couldn’t manage it alone.

One of the main reasons why I find the strength to wake up before the sun and train is because every single time I get on the water, I know I am not alone. We train together as a team and watch the entire group improve across the board. Definitely, one of the greatest benefits of team training is higher levels of energy and motivation to the point that training becomes more productive and more fun. Sports are also a wonderful way of forming friendships and there is nothing better than a friend with whom you not only share similar interests but also relates to you through a common ground. I was told that only very few people train during the winter season. I was ready to listen to “It’s
cold, it’s dark” a million times but the truth is that no matter the weather and no matter the season, when you walk down the evil steps at 0545hrs you will get to line up waiting for the sampan, because a huge bunch of people signed up for the session and smiley eyes are all around. Then the race days come and the Club has great turnovers and great results, among all the courses and all the fleets, with people ready to switch around seats and crews. Every single time it gives me goose bumps and it makes the next evil alarm clock worth it. Because in the end, no matter what, I will do it again (and again)! I want to thank the Captains, the coaches and all my paddling friends who make, day by day, this paddling journey an amazing experience. With no surprises for anybody, a very special thank you goes to Stephanie, our ladies’ captain. She unfortunately needs to take a little break from the water, but I am sure she will be back very soon, stronger than ever. You will be missed, Steph! But we are all looking forward to seeing you back. I also take this occasion to say goodbye one more time to the Youngs (Deanne and Jeremy) who recently left Hong Kong and who have been key members of the RHKYC paddle section for many years. 70 faces around for their last paddle are enough to give the idea of how well known and appreciated they are by the Club.

Floating rope is an excellent addition to lifebuoy rings and other safety devices to improve visibility of a man overboard and increase the chance that a person in the water can grab something to tether to in an emergency situation. It is important to have a safety plan in place and for it to be well practised, especially if a safety device is thrown into the water.

Power3 ratchet blocks provide sailors that race small one-designs with three holding-power options to handle a variety of wind and sea conditions. More choices allows sailors to fine-tune their set-ups in tandem with the purchase that provides the ideal level of power, responsiveness and grip. The patented T2 Ratchamatic is Harken’s newest block to feature the T2 line’s styling and soft-attachment system. The wright of this high-strength block is only a few ounces. This is thanks to composite fibre-reinforced sideplates, aluminium sheave, a lightweight softattach, and a minimum of moving parts in the ratcheting mechanism. All T2 blocks are lashed or spliced through the load-bearing center of the block, decreasing the loads on the sideplates and acting as a safety backup for the system. Lashing allows ratchet adjustment close to the deck. Lashing or splicing provides a variety of options for securing the block at exactly the right height to maintain a fair lead.

Why do I need to register my craft with the Club? Members must register their boat with the Club through the Marine Office. Again the registration form is available under Marine. The reason that members are required to register their craft is so that the marine staff can check that a boat belongs to a Club Member when it is using Club Facilities such as the, moorings, pontoons or uplifting water. Why do I need to give the club a copy of my boats license and insurance? By law all boats afloat in Hong Kong must have a valid insurance certificate and operating license. If a boat is on a mooring and it is not licensed or insured then it is illegally using the mooring. As the Marine Department allow the Club to manage the Moorings, it is the responsibility of the Club to ensure that all moorings are being managed lawfully. If the Marine Department find an unlicensed boat on one of the moorings then penalty points will be given to the Club for that mooring. If the mooring accumulates enough penalty points then the mooring will be taken away from the Club by MarDep. Can I use the book the guest moorings at Jade bay and Middle Island? The moorings are not bookable and are on a first come first served basis. The club do not supply mooring ropes for the moorings but assistance in picking up a Middle Island mooring can be had by members contacting the Sampan. Details are on the website under MARINE/BOATYARD, Marine, MI and Jade Bay Moorings Can I moor my boat alongside on the pontoon? Member should note that:
absent members list will have their name removed from the waiting list. Members will be given waitlist code number for each facility they apply for and this is shown on the Mooring and Marina waiting list. Sailing boats are given priority over motor boats when allocating moorings. Where can I find the waiting list and how long will I have to wait for a mooring? The waiting list is available under Marine and shows the size of each mooring, the location and the date the member applied for the mooring in chronological order. The waitlist code is given so members can check their own position on the list. Moorings do not normally move fast and the wait for some sizes of mooring is well over 5 years. How much does a mooring cost? Mooring costs can be found on the Website under MARINE/BOATYARD.
The mooring fees are located under the Marine Fees Button along with other information.

As a Sailing and Rowing Club the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club organises yacht racing for its members all year round. Yacht racing in considered to be one of the core sports of the Club and is one of the primary reasons that the Club operates. Members with boats on moorings at our three Club Houses require a sampan to get to, and from, their boat from the Club’s pontoons. Sampans are therefore first and foremost for transporting boat owning members between their boat on the mooring and the pontoon at the Club. There are a limited number of sampans available in the Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter and during busy regattas, such as the Nations Cup, Around the Island Race and the Spring and Autumn Regattas, etc, all the sampans are required to enable the large number of Club Members and their crews to get to and from their boats to take part in the yacht racing. As has been the case for many years, on these occasions it is not possible to also operate a sampan to Jardine Steps. The Club wishes to thank non boat owning members for their understanding on these important racing days for the Club.

Farewell
Obituary

Ruth von Siebenthal-Hung 1952-2021 Ruth was such a strong woman and not much could hold her back, but unfortunately peritoneal cancer overcame her. She died peacefully at home in Switzerland on 30 May. We are so grateful that she managed to let go and find peace so soon and she didn’t have to struggle for long. She passed over the rainbow with a light smile on her face and will forever stay within us.
Mark Bovaird, General Manager presented a farewell gift to Arthur Ho, Head Coxswain who retired on 29 May 2021 after 19 years’ service
Ruth had been a member since 1982, and became an absent member in 2001 when she left Hong Kong and returned to Switzerland with her husband, Larry. She also worked for the Club since mid 70s until May 1987 as a Food and Beverage Manager, and in particular under her leadership to run the Club’s inaugural 12-hour Regatta Ball will be particularly remembered by every member and staff, and it remains an iconic event that is the best Ball in Hong Kong to this day. All our sympathies will be with her loving husband Larry, children Alexander, Betina and Caroline; and the three grandchildren Emma, Megan and Luke.

Thanks to the invitation of the Sustainability Working Group, the Family Panel jointly presented a World Oceans Day Exhibition on 6 June. There were interesting talks by Hong Kong Marine Ecological Association, Ocean Recovery Alliance and HK Shark Foundation. Kids stopped by the Family Panel Sub-Committee table and created cool sea creatures to fill our ocean scene. It was so much fun to watch the board fill up! If we all did our part, we could slowly but surely help our world oceans fill up once again with colour and life! Say NO to shark fin soup! NO to single use plastic! Pick up plastic! Love our oceans!

I grew up with the Royal X dragon boat team. During race season, I spent almost every weekend watching the races around Hong Kong and watching this team celebrate on stage with their medals and trophies. I have always longed for the time when I would be old enough to paddle too. The time has finally come. Being 12, I am now old enough to paddle and train with the team. It takes a lot of commitment and my time, but I am willing to sacrifice small things for great achievements. I raced for the first time a few weeks ago at the MI Cup and it was a very exciting experience. Dragon boating takes a lot of teamwork. It’s very fun getting to know more people and race with them. My next race will be with the Club’s Junior Dragon Boat team at the KI Cup.
