Author’s Note

Hello! It is me--Luie Boone once again! I would like to present to everyone the 14th volume of mine and Mom’s magazine. This one is called Barking Buddies--filled with fantastic bark-friendly vacation spots! I guarantee that you will want to visit these travel locations. So, please enjoy our 14th volume of WAGGERS WELCOME. We have kept to the same set-up, as we feel this keeps things much easier to understand. Note that each vacation destination is again broken into four sections. First-an explanation on each location is provided. Second, is a description of the vacation rental our family will stay at. Each family member has their own sleeping quarters. Other amenities are, also, defined and I have added a personal saying to each description. Please enjoy each of my expressions. The 3rd page stays devoted to each specific location with 3 dog-friendly activities, 1 dog-friendly eating place and 1 unique dog thing about the vacation spot. I continue to end the section with a map from our home city of Hortonville, Wisconsin to the vacation destination. This includes miles driving and hours on the road,

(courtesy of Bing Maps: “ Bing Maps - Driving Directions, Traffic and Road Conditions.” Bing Maps - Driving Directions, Traffic and Road Conditions. N.p., n.d.Web. 30 May 2015. https://www.bing.com/maps/.) Also, included are dog-friendly lodgings (if needed on the way) and my own pet peeve about the location. We are enjoying the discoveries of these new dog-friendly places and still have the desire to visit each of them. In the meantime, please enjoy our 14th magazine! Your friend,

Luie Boone

HAVE A WAG-WORTHY VACATION TO GENERAL COFFEE STATE PARK, GEORGIA Chapter 1:

Bring your dog to “one of southern Georgia’s “best kept secrets”.” And that secret would be the 1,511 acre General Coffee State Park! You and your dog can walk along the Seventeen-Mile River, meander on the boardwalk that winds through a cypress swamp, hike on the 4 miles of trails or stroll on the nature trail. There is “no shortage” of things to do at this "ideal (vacation) destination.”

Luie says: “I cannot believe that we are going on vacation to somewhere called General Coffee State Park. Dad loves coffee. We all can sit out on the covered porch as Dad drinks his morning coffee before we set out on our adventures at the park. We can take a walk on the cypress swamp boardwalk and on the dog-friendly trails there. We can have lunch at one of the picnic shelters and then spend some time by the Seventeen-Mile River and the lake. When we are done, we can head back to the vacation rental to relax and think about what we can have fun doing the next day!”

So, Rachel and I did some research and found out that this is the term for the bent-at-the-waist posture used to collect seashells on Sanibel Island, which bills itself as one of the best shelling locations in the world. The island provides more than 400 different types of shells for collectors. Guess we will be going there for sure and starting a new collection!”

LUIE’S PET PEEVE ABOUT SANIBEL ISLAND IT IS EASY TO FEEL THAT THERE IS NOT A WORRY IN THE WORLD WHILE VACATIONING ON SANIBEL ISLAND AND FOR THE MOST PART THAT IS ACCURATE— WITH THE SINGULAR EXCEPTION THAT THERE MAY BE ALLIGATORS PRESENT. (I GUESS THAT ALLIGATORS ARE OPPORTUNISTIC EATERS AND WILL LAY AND WAIT IN FRESH OR BLACKSISH WATERS OR ON THE EDGES OF THE SAME FOR PREY TO COME CLOSE BY. THEY WILL NOT BE WANDERING THE STREETS AND BEACHES -LOOKING FOR A BITE TO EAT. VERY SIMPLE FOR US--IS IF WE SEE AN ALLIGATOR: THE BEST THING IS TO LEAVE THEM ALONE AND ALWAYS STAY 30 FEET OR MORE AWAY. THEY ARE AN IMPORTANT PART OF SANIBEL’S NATURAL HISTORY. JUST BE SURE TO KEEP A SENSIBLE DISTANCE BETWEEN YOU AND THEM!)

Chapter 4:

CLAYTON LAKE STATE PARK, NEW MEXICO

Close to the borders of Colorado, Oklahoma and Texas, in northeastern New Mexico, is the “popular” Clayton Lake State Park. Explore with your dog a 170-acre “recreational” lake and one of the “most extensive dinosaur trackways in North America.” Take a walk with your dog on the half mile trail to see dinosaur tracks that are “embedded” in rock near the lake. Plan to take a vacation to this park, in “rolling” grasslands, with the “unexpected bonus” of dinosaur tracks! Don’t make this park just a “stopover” point for you and your dog.

Luie says: “Ok-I am kinda freaking out. We are going on vacation to a park where there are approximately 500 dinosaur tracks. Rachel looked into the history of the tracks and I guess the dinosaurs ranged in size from 1 foot long to 30 feet long. One set of prints was made by a swimming crocodile, while other tracks are Individual dinosaur tracks along a single line, indicating that the dinosaur walked with his legs beneath him. Studies suggest that the footprints are about 91–100 million years old. Ok, I feel a little better now-- but I think I will still freak out seeing the tracks.”

The “picturesque New England” town of Fairfield, Connecticut, “blessed” with five miles of shoreline on the Long Island Sound, “will surprise you” and your dog with an “abundance of outdoor activities and adventure.” There is a “variety” of exciting activities available, including “watersports right on the beach.” “Spend time unwinding” on the trails or at the lakes —“whatever you choose is sure to make (lasting) memories!”

As a family we can sit out on the vacation rental’s patio and cook up some tasty food on the grill. Then, we can go out on the sandy beach for a walk – but I don’t think I would enjoy that taste of sand. Being beachfront is fantastic as I do love water to drink--however, I am sure I would not like the taste of saltwater. Like I said-- I do enjoy the taste of just about everything.”

Rachel checked out the “weather averages for Capitol Reef National Park for wind, and it appeared that dangerous flash floods are more common there. That is because of the park’s varied elevations and landscape. Weather can vary widely across the park.” We will be checking the weather forecast each day before we head out to be safe.”

Bring your dog to somewhere that “has lured tourists for more than a century.” On the banks of the Arkansas River, located in the “center” of the state of Arkansas, the “charming and historic” capital city of Little Rock is “for those who enjoy the outdoors.” Little Rock “has all the ingredients of a perfect (vacation) getaway,” offering running/walking/hiking trails and other outdoor recreational opportunities. “Providing an abundance of attractions,” Little Rock is “definitely the place to find a good time” for you and your dog.

LUIE’S PET PEEVE ABOUT LITTLE ROCK IT IS ILLEGAL TO POSSESS A PIT BULL DOG IN THE CITY. (PIT BULL DOGS ARE MOST FREQUENTLY AND UNJUSTLY TARGETED AS BEING VICIOUS, AGGRESSIVE AND DANGEROUS— I THINK THAT THIS IS NOT THE CASE! UNFORTUNATELY, NEGATIVE MEDIA ATTENTION AND THE FACT THAT THEY ARE USED IN ILLEGAL DOGFIGHTING HAS GIVEN PIT BULLS A BAD REPUTATION! THEY ARE LARGELY MISUNDERSTOOD BECAUSE OF IRRESPONSIBLE OWNERS, SENSATIONAL NEWS STORIES AND LOTS AND LOTS OF MYTHS. PLEASE—EVERYONE JUST GIVE THEM A CHANCE— THEY JUST NEED TO BE TREATED WITH RESPECT, LOVED AND TRAINED PROPERLY!)
