2019 OFFICIAL PROGRAMME

EDITORIAL Welcome to Long Division Festival 2019. Here we are, once again, filling the buildings and streets of Wakefield with sights and sounds, with people from across the UK and with a massive range of artists and performers. In the crazy mixed up world we now inhabit, events like this are essential. It can be dark out there. We’re about the light. How does that work? On the one hand, we invite you to our city to have an amazing time. Hear some amazing bands you know and love, discover your new favourite performers, spend time with friends and family and forget about your worries, those wider woes of the world. That’s enough. We all need that. But we also hope to achieve more. We hope we also represent what happens when grassroots artists, programmers and local people come together to make something happening. We’re still fiercely independent and all our profits go back into the community. That’s an increasingly impossible standpoint to take but without it there wouldn’t be a festival and we stand proud with other independent festivals across the country, built in spare rooms in people’s spare time. So please, enjoy your time in Wakefield. Be part of our community, see the power of arts and culture and supporting local initiatives. Thanks for being here. Dean Freeman Festival Director On behalf of Team Long Division
Thank you to all our funders, sponsors and supporters for making the event possible:

29/05/19 (WED)
Long Division Festival proudly opens in partnership with Wakefield Artwalk. For ten years, venues across Wakefield have been opening their doors for a bi-monthly evening of visual arts, crafts, workshops, live music, and performances. As ever everyone is welcome and most events are free, so there’s never been a better time to discover a city that’s bursting with culture.
Mappa Music Neon Workshop
Exclusive to this Artwalk are the unveiling of some of Long Division’s Onto The Streets commissions. These include Matt Abbottt’s Repeated Subtraction, Neon Workshops’ I Formed A Band, Helen Thomas’ Mappa Music, a brand new mural from Seanna Doonan and a preview of Napoleon IIIrd’s Buildings project. More info on these commissions are available on page 35. 3
30/05/19 (THU)
We’ve handed over Thursday’s entertainment to two brilliant local promoters – take your pick! Body’s began their monthly gigs at The Establishment in 2019 and past shows have included The Golden Age Of TV, Cruel World and Disguises. For their special Long Division show they present the critically acclaimed Meursault, supported by Wakefield’s own Mi Mye. Set in an intimate, friendly and cosy space (with pizza available by the slice too) and running from 8pm - 10pm it’s a great musical opening to #LD2019, (tickets £6). Alternatively, Ric Neale is presenting a special edition of his monthly Monochrome night at Jolly Boy’s Tap. After a great Thursday show at LD2018, it’s great to have Ric back, and this time he’ll be joined by special guests The Bleeding Obvious, Simon Widdop, Genevieve Walsh and Rob Reed. Expect a very welcoming, informal and joyous evening around the Jolly Boys Piano, mashing up great music and spoken word. From 7pm - 10pm, (free entry).

The evening will then kick off from 7pm with something close to our hearts - The Big Fat Festival Quiz in aid of Andy’s Man Club. Featuring live music, guest quizmasters, a bar and big prizes, every pound we receive from tickets will go directly to the charity that was setup to deal with the huge problem of suicide being the number 1 killer of men aged under 45 by simply offering a place to talk openly and spread the message that “it’s good to talk”. Tickets are £20 for a team of up to 4 people.

With venues including the stunning Theatre Royal Wakefield, the city’s largest venue Warehouse 23, the return of Wakefield Town Hall and our Precinct stage presented by BBC Introducing, Saturday is the day to be at Long Division. Over 100 performances will take place across the city, bringing together great emerging artists and nationally touring ones, side by side.

WAREHOUSE23 22:30 Peter Hook & The Light
any respectable indie disco during that time you will have danced to the likes of Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt and The Great Escape.
Almost 40 years to the week since Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures was released, it’s with a sense of anticipation that we welcome Peter Hook to Long Division ahead of the anniversary.
With Long Division being their only UK appearance this summer it’s your only chance to throw those shapes. Who knows it could also provide the location for a live incarnation of their WASABI collaboration with Art Brut.
Asian Dub Foundation
Originally returning to Unknown Pleasures in 2010, Hooky’s continued dedication to his back catalogue has seen him move through “Closer”, “Still”, “Movement”, “Power Corruption & Lies”, “Low Life”, “Brotherhood”. “Technique” and “Republic”. During this time The Light have performed over 500 shows including headline slots at Kendal Calling, Bestival, Primavera Sound and Benicassim. Tonight, expect a celebratory set, pulling together both Joy Division and New Order material.
Peter Hook & The Light
19:30 Asian Dub Foundation Another act with reason to celebrate, Asian Dub Foundation reissued their Mercury nominated album Rafi’s Revenge, in March, marking the 20th anniversary of an album which made a global impact when ADF were primed to explode. Recognized as one of the best live bands in the world, during their career Asian Dub Foundation shared stages with the likes of Rage Against The Machine, The Cure and Radiohead.
21:00 We Are Scientists What was your musical era? If Hooky has the late 70’s through to early 90’s covered and Asian Dub Foundation sound-tracked the late 90’s We Are Scientists undoubtedly featured prominently in the 00’s landscape. Its inevitable that if you attended
More Signal More Noise saw them play all over the world, confirming them as one of the hardest working live bands in the business, witness this as they take to Warehouse’s stage. 9
TICKETED / WRISTBAND ACCESS 18:00 We Were Promised Jetpacks
Mansion Of Snakes
Celebrating a decade of existence, WWPJ form part of Long Division’s regular Scottish contingent. Their expansive post-rock is perfectly suited to filling “The space between us” as they sing on Impossible the opener of last year’s The More I Sleep the Less I Dream or Warehouse 23 for that matter. 17:00 Menace Beach 15:00 Mansion Of Snakes
Another act with ties to the Fall family tree, having collaborated with Brix Smith on last year’s Black Rainbow Sound. Celebrating its release with an appearance in Wah Wah Records if you missed them then, now is your chance to hear them explore darker subjects, smuggled in on melodic hooks.
Leeds afrobeat/cosmic jazz behemoth, who put out the excellent single Mating Season through Come Play With Me last year. With their seal of approval that should be all you need to know if you’re planning on making Long Division a jazz odyssey. 14:00 Hello Cosmos
We Were Promised Jetpacks
Featuring the brains behind Bluedot and Kendall Calling festivals, Hello Cosmos are perfectly equipped to get audiences moving. Dream Harder screams floor filler and their appearances with The Charlatan and British Sea Power add to the anticipation of this performance. They contribute The Cosmic Trigger to our New Additions compilation.
16:00 Imperial Wax
13:00 False Advertising
Messrs Melling, Spurr and Greenway are no strangers to Long Division, having headlined with The Fall in 2013. Now teamed with Sam Curran their debut Gastwerk Saboteurs has just been released with Henry Rollins playing them on his radio show. They contribute no Man’s Land to our New Additions compilation.
Latest single You Won’t Feel Love has seen the likes of Huw Stephens and Daniel P Carter showing them love on Radio 1. Their hook laden punk has a sugar coating akin to the lollipop that adorned said single’s cover. See you at the front suckers! 10
THEATRE ROYAL WAKEFIELD 21:30 Penguin Cafe
Wakefield. Mixing intense and clever storytelling with subtle, earthy backing (including Siobhan Wilson and former Arab Strap drummer David Jeans) it will be a very special show.
Aidan Moffat & RM Hubbert
Arthur Jeffes is a musician, composer, producer and founder of Penguin Cafe. Following in the footsteps of his father, Simon Jeffes of the iconic Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Arthur formed Penguin Cafe with a brand new line-up, including Cass Browne of Gorillaz, Neil Codling of Suede, Oli Langford of Florence and the Machine and Darren Berry of Razorlight. Penguin Cafe’s music bears all the hallmarks of PCO that its disciples will know and love, continuing to transcend popular and classical music.
18:45 Bill Ryder Jones
Bill Ryder Jones
It’s not often an artist goes solo and eclipses his former work with such ease, but Bill Ryder-Jones, founding member of The Coral continues to astound with his own output. Taking in a diverse range of influences, from classical to the sombre works of Bill Calahan, he is now regarded as one of the most revered artists touring today. His recent record Yawn has received across the board top reviews and a chance to see him in the surroundings of Wakefield’s beautiful theatre should not be missed. 17:30 Keston Cobblers Club
20:15 Aidan Moffat & RM Hubbert
Keston Cobblers Club continue to emanate their hook-laden melodies and rousing arrangements that have already won them an army of loyal fans. With intricate instrumentation and honest, accessible lyrics, they ensure an immediate familiarity with audiences far and wide.
Mr Moffat’s appearance at Long Division 2013 with Bill Wells is still considered one of our best ever performances. And with RM Hubbert a long time festival friend, we simply had to get this new and very fruitful partnership to 11
TICKETED / WRISTBAND ACCESS Avi Buffalo
14:15 Sister John A breath of fresh air - The Roddy Hart Show BBC Scotland / Charming and effortlessly melodic - Ravechild / Lush, sublime, beautiful and wonderful...it’s hard to capture just how special this album is Everything Flows / Songs which have a casual, unshowy grace and maturity you more often find in artists with several albums behind them - Nadine McBay, The National / a beautiful thing - Guy Garvey, Guy Garvey’s Finest Hour, BBC 6 Music.
16:15 Avi Buffalo
Sister John
Embarking upon a sophomore effort can be a daunting task for any young upstart, and there’s no denying Avi Buffalo’s own bar was set quite high with 2010’s celebrated eponymous debut - an off-kilter pop gem that eventually bowled over NME, The AV Club, Pitchfork, the BBC, and numerous other outlets on both sides of the Atlantic whose tastes are respected by the general public. At the ripe old age of 23, Avi Buffalo is ready to take on the world (again), armed with all of the experience he’s compiled over the past few years.
13:15 Ric Neale Ric Neale is a musician and songwriter. As well as releasing work as a solo artist with which he has toured extensively, he has also written music for other artistic projects. He was commissioned along with spoken word artist Rob Reed to create the theatre piece Never Worn for Wakefiled Literature Festival in 2017 and is also the host and curator of Wakefield’s very own MONOCHROME, a monthly piano night that continues to spotlight the best piano-based musicians in the UK.
15:15 One Day, After School With a debut record under their belt regarded for its Mogwai / Slint / Sonic Youth / Low influences seamlessly intertwined, “ODAS” return to live performances to debut new material, blending influences such as Boards Of Canada, Suuns and Tricky with their experience of soundtracking poet Simon Armitage’s “Dead Sea Poems”.

MECHANICS’ THEATRE 22:00 Art Brut
Art Brut
Modern Art Brut still want to rock out, as evidenced by 2018’s Wham! Bam! Pow! Let’s Rock Out. Described as “A triumphant return... yet another infectious collection of songs!” by Louder Than War, what better reason to bring them back to Long Division after a 7-year gap. Album opener Hooray! with it blasts of brass brought to mind the rendition of I Can’t Turn You Loose featured in The Blues Brothers. Although we’ve swapped the Bob’s Country Bunker-esque surroundings of Mustang Sallys for the somewhat classier surroundings of Mechanics Theatre its certain to be another memorable performance from Eddie Argos and co.
during their recent London gigs and releasing their latest album Slight Disconnects on a not-forprofit record label, whose ethos is “Good old-fashioned socialism”, our collaborators Last Night From Glasgow.
bis
Already their new material has burrowed its way into our memories, altogether now “Fresh Local Produce!”. 19:30 International Teachers Of Pop Sheffield and synths, a match made in heaven, with the Steel City providing the spawning ground for some A grade pop. Their debut was BBC 6 Music’s Album of the Day upon its release and they’ve championed by Iggy Pop of late. Who knows, you might learn Pink Floyd’s The Wall in German.
20:45 bis Following Teachers of Pop’s lesson, it seems appropriate to head to the School Disco, the bis track which makes the cut on the Steve Lamacq curated Lost Alternatives 90’s retrospective box set.
18:30 Cowtown Has it really been 5 years since Cowtown last graced Long Division? Personal pilgrimages to catch them in Nottingham and Sheffield aside, some of you must be seriously desperate for a fix of Nash’s jerky guitar, Hilary’s bass synth and the ever-energetic Shield’s drumming.
Far from looking backwards though bis continue to write new chapters in the DIY handbook, committing to playing free all-age matinee shows 13
TICKETED / WRISTBAND ACCESS 17:30 Liela Moss
city’s finest composer-musicians they encompass the diversity of modern musical palettes with middle eastern harmonies, high energy, danceable afro jazz to heavy metal and rock grooves.
The Duke Spirit singer released My Name Is Safe In Your Mouth a richly felt, vivid trip into the interior through Bella Union in 2018. A serene-to-stormy series of deep dream-pop meditations on devotion and selfhood, creativity and parenthood, we’re already tipping this performance to be a festival highlight.
14:00 Ancient Infinity Orchestra
Liela Moss
Genre-fluid, this nine-piece group are influenced by psychedelia, jazz, classical and world music. Melodic and dynamic music played with jazz instrumentation, inspired by Sun Ra, nature and spirituality. Since forming in 2018 they’ve appeared at Marsden Jazz, Chapel Allerton Arts Festival and Manchester’s Northern Quarter Jazz. 13:00 IAMOMEGA Wakefield progressive / post rock quartet who have shared stages with the likes of Vodun and One Hundred Year Old Man, usually in the classic setting of a dark, sweaty, rock venue. All the more reason to watch them in a listed building, during the day time!
16:30 Cruel World A supergroup in our eyes, members previously gracing our stages in Middleman and Post War Glamour Girls it’s a privilege to bring Cruel World back to Wakefield. Comfortable owning up to ripping off Bryan Adams and Mel C, their set is guaranteed to put a smile on your face. 15:15 Manchester Jazz Collective
Cruel World
Embodying our collaboration with Wakefield Jazz, the 10-piece, Manchester based ensemble are one of several jazz acts performing this year. Comprising some of that 14
WAKEFIELD TOWN HALL 20:10 Chris Betts vs The Audience
Although Long Division has hosted Josie Long and Robin Ince in 2013, this is the first time we’ve dedicated a stage to comedy.
Jayde Adams
Comedian, Canadian and contrarian Chris will debate the opposite of anything anyone says in this live show, which is soon to be a podcast. Betts’ mind is a curious place, where the philosophical meets the ridiculous. His shows are a perfect balance of incisive social satire and complete silliness. He has a style that is equal parts confident, thoughtful, ridiculous and mischievous. We’d say don’t watch him, obviously go with the opposite of that, OK! 19:30 Njambi McGrath Njambi is a Kenyan born UK based comedian and author. Fast becoming a familiar face on TV having appeared on STV during the Edinburgh Fringe, Sky & ITV News, French TV, Bloomberg Africa TV and even Nigerian TV. A prolific writer, having written multiple articles for Huffpost, Glam Africa & I-News, she’s also recently landed a publishing deal for her debut book Through The Leopards Gaze which is due to be released in 2020.
21:05 Jayde Adams Winner of The Scottish Sun’s awards ‘Best Show’ and ‘Best Female Performer’ for her second show Jayded at the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe. Jayde is preparing to take Ballad of Kylie Jenners Old Face to this year’s festival. Another performer with music related credentials, she hosted the Eurovision Calling podcast with Scott Mills in the run up to this year’s song contest and she’s recently considered forming a girl band with Sarah Millican and Helen Lederer.
18:50 Tanyalee Davis Since arriving in the UK Tanyalee has stormed the comedy scene, appearing on prestigious shows including Live At The Apollo, The Last Leg and The John Bishop Show. The 3 foot 6 inch Canadian standup headlines at comedy clubs and festivals throughout the UK and the 15

17:15 Vikki Stone “The bastard love child of Victoria Wood and Tim Minchin.” - The Scotsman Although best known for her original comedy songs, Vikki is also an actress, musician and composer. Her debut orchestral work, Concerto for Comedian and Orchestra, premiered in March. She’s appeared on TV and Radio including: The John Bishop Show, and I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here... Now. Impressively she was last seen on the BBC running the London marathon in a dog costume!

16:30 Joey Page 18:10 Silky
Joey should feel right at home performing at a predominantly music-based festival, as the host of a show on FUBAR radio his guests have recently included fellow Long Division performers Art Brut and Dead Naked Hippies.
“I SWEAR TO GOD KEITH, IF ANOTHER OVERCONFIDENT IDIOT PUSHES A FLYER INTO MY FACE I WON’T BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR MY ACTIONS.” Come see a balding 40-something as a protest. He’s been playing all over the world since 1995 and knows what he’s doing. Comedy. Music. Sometimes both.
On the comedy front Page has spent the last few years blustering around the circuit, supporting the likes of Josie Long and Noel Fielding and appearing on shows including, Nevermind the Buzzcocks and Noel Fielding’s Luxury comedy. 16
THE COUNTING HOUSE PRESENTED BY YORKSHIRE MUSIC FORUM excellent Come Play With Me label they’ve been played on 6 Music and Radio X.
Yorkshire Music Forum is a consortium of organisations working in artist and music industry development across the region – with an aim to provide a deeper connection to national representative music bodies and make it easier to communicate and raise awareness of opportunities across the Yorkshire region. YMF is a PRS Foundation Talent Development Partner and currently consists of Come Play With Me, DMF Digital, Higher Rhythm, Arnold Brown Ltd, and Music:Leeds.
Sex Cells
21:45 Skinny Living Local heroes who’ve been on an upwards trajectory since their impromptu appearance in Eye Wood vintage shop on Wood Street at Long Division 2014. Their four-part harmonies taking them to European stages and next week Elland Road. A rare chance to catch them in an intimate home town setting.
19:45 Talkboy
Skinny Living
Leeds sextet, whose recent single Wasting Time has been garnering plays on BBC Introducing. They combine playful indie, captivating melodies and layers of vocal harmonies, shifting between euphoric walls of noise and intimately sweet soundscapes. With stellar sets at Live At Leeds and Gold Sounds they’re primed for Long Division. 18:45 Sex Cells Brutalist Synth Pop duo, who’ve shared stages with International Teachers of Pop, drawing comparisons to ITOP alumni The Eccentronic Research Council as well as Suicide. Their sound features 8-bit drum machine, crunchy analogue synths and lyrics narrating apocalyptic visions of modern Britain. Sounds like Eggland twinned with Valhalla Dale.
20:45 The Golden Age Of TV TGAOTV were one of Adore//Repel’s picks when interviewed for Rhubarb Bomb ahead of last year’s festival. With such a recommendation still on our minds we welcome them back. Another act to work with the 17
TICKETED / WRISTBAND ACCESS Two Weeks In Nashville
14:45 Let Man Loose With the backing of BBC Introducing, Let Man Loose have cemented a place in their hometown’s music scene which has continued to flourish since Hull was the 2017 City of Culture. Expect a blend of thunderous fuzz boxes, sweeping tremolo lines and melodic vocals delivered with the East Yorkshire dialect.
17:45 Sly Antics An alternative duo from a hot bed of alternative culture, Hebden Bridge. Sly Antics sound is genuinely fresh with heavy drum beats coupled driving guitar lines which sit perfectly underneath Sam’s soulful and gritty vocal lines. No strangers to festival stages having already appeared at Kendal Calling and Neighbourhood Weekender.
13:45 Homesteads Whilst we don’t condone Donald Trump style wall building, we can get behind the Sheffield quintet’s aim to build walls of rock energy. Old-school twin guitars vie for supremacy in their classic rock sound and there we were thinking Sheffield only produced quality synth music and steel!
16:45 Two Weeks In Nashville
Tiger By The Tail
Fronted by Freddie Wortley, who bears more than a passing resemblance to a young Billy Idol, rock collective TWIN have honed their stage-craft with performances across the country, with airplay on Absolute Radio and BBC Introducing. Appropriately enough their latest recording session took place in “The home of country music”. 15:45 Joe Russell Brown
12:45 Tiger By The Tail
His initial release, Post Youth Depression, created on a cheap microphone and laptop in his grandma’s bungalow, is an uplifting listen. Capturing the transition from acoustic songwriter to dreampop band leader. Already drawing praise from our friends at Backseat Mafia, we look forward to witnessing Joe in the flesh.
Having just released their debut single Scenarios, Leeds based TBTT are a new name to us. With a sound built on heavy electronic bass lines expect to very much feel their music as well as hearing the hard-hitting hooks. Whilst ethereal vocals send shivers down the listener’s spine. 18
HENRY BOONS 22:15 Mik Artistik’s Ego Trip
20:15 Cowgirl
Mik Artistik spouts lyrics, throws straws, and generally amuses himself, over the top of an exquisite layer of rock, soul, and punk created by partner in crime Jonny Flockton on guitar, a drum machine, and one of a crack squad of bass players.
Two-piece rock n roll from York/ Manchester – think Teenage Fanclub meets Jesus & Mary Chain. Two releases to date on Desert Mine Music UK (Sam Forrest, Nine Black Alps label). “... Spaceman 3 zorbing down a hill being pushed by Eugene from The Vaselines...” - Steve Lamacq, BBC 6 Music.
The cult band, have delighted and unnerved Glastonbury audiences for over ten years gaining more devoted followers each time they play, and are proving to be one of the most interesting, unpredictable and exciting acts on the circuit.
Cowgirl
Mik Artistik’s Ego Trip
19:15 Cloth Delivering angular alt-rock cut through with deep electronic grooves. Following a slot supporting Mercury Prize-nominated C Duncan in December, the plaudits continued with a BBC Introducing Live Session on BBC Radio Scotland with Vic Galloway (who chose Cloth as one of his 25 Scottish Artists To Watch In 2019) and included by Huw Stephens on his BBC Radio 1 Introducing ’Tips for 2019’ show .
21:15 Broken Chanter Broken Chanter is the adopted name of David MacGregor. MacGregor spent the past decade as the principal songwriter of Scottish Alt-Pop darlings Kid Canaveral – a band that could get you to dance, laugh, and weep all in the space of a set. The first Broken Chanter album is a record which paints an emotional and expansive soundscape with a distinct sense of place, that showcases MacGregor’s ear for melody and dexterity at tugging heart-strings.
18:15 Disguises Disguises are an alternative indie rock band from Wakefield, with members of Runaround Kids, The Spills, Mi Mye and The Old House. Fronted by 19
TICKETED / WRISTBAND ACCESS Brosnan
15:00 Knuckle Powerhouse trio from Huddersfield with songs you want to lick. Plays deluxe garage blues. Has supported Idles, Little Barrie, Barrence Whitfield & The Savages. dark and engaging vocals surrounded by loops and reinforced with a wall of noise from either side, Disguises play songs that fall between singersongwriter introspection and 90s fuzz rock.
14:00 Brosnan Brosnan’s fusion of British indie and new wave informs their secondhand pop sound, exuding wistful overtones reminiscent of influences Pulp and New Order. “Surprisingly quirky indie rock ’n’ roll that manages to keep one toe in the 1960s whilst sounding fresh and modern” Fred Perry Subculture
17:15 Alessi’s Ark A name and voice which has been built upon years of resilience, adventure, triumph and change. From starting out as a young woman of 16 years old, Alessi has since toured extensively in the UK, Europe, US and Japan in support of her releases with M.Ward, Jenny Lewis, Mumford & Sons, Laura Marling, Sharon Van Etten and John Grant, amongst others. 16:00 Vibe-ology

THE HOP 20:00 The New Nostalgia
19:00 The Hyde
Born on the streets of Amsterdam when four old friends tried to comprehend the existential haze of their midtwenties, The New Nostalgia’s sound has echoes of Foals and Death Cab For Cutie.
Returning to Long Division the Wakefield teenagers have been cutting their teeth on stages around Yorkshire for the past couple of years, earning their stripes in the process. Like their fellow northern heroes, The Cribs and Blossoms once did, they’re looking to step up to bigger stages further afield.
The New Nostalgia
Established Yorkshire songwriter Patrick McCallion (appearing elsewhere today), along with James Sands, Sam Bramhall and Charles Adey are storming into 2019 and have already brought their explosive new live show to smoke filled rooms across Europe. With haunting lyrics that will get under your skin, The New Nostalgia are questioning what it means to be young at heart in a Post-Brexit world.
18:00 Sandra’s Wedding
Relax. It’s going to be alright...
Sandra’s Wedding
Self-proclaimed fans of British Rail, French Kisses and Dutch Courage amongst other things. We’re fans of their tunes which recall Paul Heaton’s work and a DIY approach which includes plugging their wares in Yorkshire’s record shops and performing at venues including cricket and working men’s clubs and Wakefield’s Red Shed. 17:00 Tranqua Lite Idyllic and melodic, Tranqua Lite’s blend of guitar driven alternative music also contains an explosive palate of fruitful synth and bold bass, has made inroads into the music scene and is quickly becoming their trademark. Singing of Retrogression there’s hints of Vampire Weekend with an 80’s sheen in their sound. 23
FREE ACCESS 16:00 My Fake Empire
14:00 Fossway
Another of the Hull based contingent appearing at Long Division, My Fake Empire seek to mimic human moods and mental stability from calm to calamitous from anxiety to peace. Their sound mixes grunge and postpunk, so they should provide for those whose therapy is found in a church of noise.
Newcastle-Upon-Tyne quartet Fossway serve up often intricate indie which has seen them building a reputation around their home city, playing sold out shows at venues including The Cluny, O2 Academy and Wylam Brewery. 13:00 Macroscope
ALLORA
Pontefract sextet, who with the presence of a piano and keyboard player and bass saxophonist create a joyous sound. With influences ranging from indie and punk through to acid jazz, they’re at home on the festival’s most diverse line-up yet and we look forward to their Long Division debut. 12:00 Nuketown Hailing from Wakefield rather than the fictious Call Of Duty location this is the quartet’s first festival show. Expect songs such as Chokehold by Slaves, given a new slant courtesy of Victoria’s vocals. Promising to put on a memorable show we’re proud to showcase the city’s newest acts.
15:00 ALLORA
Macroscope
At times bringing to mind the solo work of erstwhile Hole and Smashing Pumpkins bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur, alternative Leeds trio Allora’s sound is harmony driven with slick, simplistic, powerful guitars and strong three-part vocals.

VELVET 22:15 Too Many T’s
Too Many T’s
Known for high-energy live shows that have seen them share stages with a number of their inspirations including De La Soul, Public Enemy, Snoop Dogg & Big Daddy Kane. The T’s bring an unforgettable party to every stage they play Presently on a ‘Rap Year’ world tour, which has taken them to Australia, Thailand, Vietnam, India and Cambodia, Wakefield is the logical next stop.
20:15 Ceiling Demons When Wakefield’s premier vinyl vendor Wah Wah Records picks a band as their highlight of the line-up you should sit up and take notice. Alan knows his hip-hop. Neither east or west side, these Demons hail from North Yorkshire and come with a reputation for eye catching live performances.
Having written themselves into Long Division folklore performing acapella in 2013, even if the DDJ-SX3 get stuck on a never-ending luggage conveyor in the Southern hemisphere they’ve got the skills to give the audience the thrills.
19:15 Seckar
Oliver Asadi
Presumably rooted in woods just south of Wakefield, London based Seckar is the alter-ego of Yorkshire born producer Ray Tovey, whose credits include Father John Misty, The Haxan Clock and Mute Records. Their track, The Constant, which showcases their bass and synth driven sound features on our New Additions compilation. 21:15 Oliver Asadi
Seckar
The ‘King Lion’ not only musically blends elements of old eastern ethnic instrumentation with hip-hop influences but combines this with a strong visual element as shown in a string of self-produced videos. A Wakefield born artist who reflects the DIY ethos Long Division was founded on. 25

16:15 The Passing Fancy
BBC Introducing approved, Leeds based electronic musician Fran seeks to make noise which occupies the space she’s performing in, an Art Deco style bar in this instance. Every element of her tracks is created spontaneously live, celebrating the imperfections which add unique nuances to the groove of the music.
The evergreen Paul Bateson and friends return to Long Division after a 3 year absence. Appearing on the same street where they opened The Graziers’ stage at the first Long Division expect songs about the joys of a pint in such boozers and guaranteed audience participation.
Fran Bundey jellyskin
17:15 Harry Rhodes Following a decade playing in many of Wakefield’s most beloved bands including St. Gregory Orange, Piskie Sits, The Ainsley Band, Yard Wars and One Day After School, Harry steps out on his own. His debut gig included material which survives the great MySpace cull, so what took him so long?
15:15 jellyskin
Bill Ryder Jones
Captured by our resident illustrator John Welding during their set in the ArtHouse at last year’s festival, we felt Jellyskin’s abrasive techno, electronica and krautrock deserved a later, darker setting for their return. Having supported The Brian Jonestown Massacre, The KVB and British Sea Power recently expect a well-honed set.

17:00 Dead Naked Hippies
14:00 Knitting Grooves
Having taken no prisoners with their set in Warehouse 23 at last year’s Oxjam we figured it was time to unleash Dead Naked Hippies in front of an unsuspecting audience. Thankfully the team at BBC Introducing West Yorkshire agreed! Catch these artrock outsiders outside on the Precinct stage.
With Dewsbury stalwarts Adore// Repel’s set going down so well in the Precinct last year we’re thrilled to bring another of the town’s musical products over to Wakefield. Knitting Grooves offer the ideal soundtrack to an afternoon spent dancing in the sun to the chilled out beats of the D-Town sound.
Dead Naked Hippies
13:00 Brooders Combining chaotic heavy riffs with a swirling psychedelic edge, psych-grunge trio Brooders, are an unforgettable experience. Relentless gigging and an endless stream of musical exploration plus working with Come Play With Me have shaped their song craft. Long Division joins the growing list of festivals they’ve taken in their stride.
16:00 Graft
12:00 Heir
As an award-winning festival, it’s fitting we bring award winning artists to Wakefield. Graft was the Best Unsung Artist at last year’s MOBO, with his quick-fire vocal delivery it’s easy to see why. We’re also fans of anyone sampling the James Bond theme as Graft does on Man Like.
DIY-pop band from Leeds whose rhythmical hooks and powerful vocal harmonies have propelled the five-piece to striking independent success. This has included slots at Reading and Leeds Festival, launching their own collaborative arts night, ‘Blueprint’ and being championed by Tom Robinson on 6 Music following exposure on BBC Introducing.
15:00 Living Body
Knitting Grooves
Although making their Long Division debut Living Body contain faces that will be familiar to festival regulars including members of Juffage and Fig By Four, whilst Mayshe-Mayshe is doing double time this year. They’ve also contributed the track C.R.E.A.M. to our New Additions compilation 27

Fronted by Netherlands born Leonie Sloots, the trio are based in Sheffield where they have established themselves in the last year with appearances at Outlines and Tramlines as well as making BBC Introducing Sheffield’s end of year best of. Lio pick up the city’s synth baton and run with it.
18:00 Manuka Leeds based singer-songwriter Manuka draws inspiration from her Indian classical training in Kolkata and love for folk and alternative sounds creating what she terms Folk India. BBC Introducing West Yorkshire have featured her music so if your intrigued by the prospect, their endorsement speaks volumes. Go and be Inspired.
19:30 Will Killen In a year that sees Long Division supporting a mental health charity its wholly appropriate that artists such as Will Killen are on the bill. Finding solace in the music he creates, he paints intimate soundscapes of love, loss, and mental struggle with his unique pallet. LIO
17:15 Thomas & The Empty Orchestra AKA Thomas Matthew Bower, T&TEO crafts folk songs rich with poetic imagery; tales of frailty, love and the grim English North. A North which inspired Paul Simon to write Homeward Bound, a singer whom Thomas’ voice echoes on tracks such as Time Runs Out For Narcissus. 18:45 Mayshe-Mayshe
16:30 Patrick McCallion
Following a memorable set at the inaugural Body’s gig we’re thrilled to bring Mayshe-Mayshe back to Establishment’s music hall. Lose yourself in the sounds as a series of synths and pedals are manipulated whilst vocal loops swirl to mesmerising effect. The Colours of Anxiety features on our New Additions compilation
Following his appearance on the acoustic stage at St Austin’s theatre last year Halifax native Patrick McCallion returns to Long Division. Now based in Amsterdam, we’re eager to see how the sights, sounds and smells of the Dutch capital have impacted on an already passionate performer.

20:45 Scott Wainwright
17:45 Chloe Juliette Beswick
Taking the one-man band template and adding his own twist, Scott is the self-styled creator of rural hip hop, country punk funk blues and lo-fi folk. Using voice, guitar, harmonica, foot stomps and occasional banjo to entertain and bewilder his audiences. Every performance comes with an element of homespun humour.
Part of the Philophobia Music stable, Chloe’s Popwitch album emerged on the label just after Long Division in 2018. Featuring material that recalls The Jesus and Mary Chain, Leeds institution Jumbo Records were amongst those singing its praises. It’s a pleasure to welcome her back to the festival.
20:00 Dan Greaves
17:00 Sleepyhead
With a set including a nod to last year’s headliner Billy Bragg, Featherstone’s finest wowed audiences not once but twice when we curated the musical offering at an unseasonably warm Rhubarb Festival in February. Expect Dan to once again deliver a set that will have the audience in full voice.
The solo project of electronic producer Lotte van den Berg, who is also a member of alternative band Luna Pines and founder of Sixteen Records. A base of hip-hop beats and dreamy vocal sampling combines with hints of post-rock soundtrack influences such as Explosions In The Sky.
19:15 Alice Simmons
16:15 Fran Minney
Described as “One of the city’s finest songbirds, who brings soulful vocals and exquisite guitar playing together to wow audiences wherever she plays.” by the organisers of the Hull Sesh gigs. We’re pleased to bring Alice back to the city following her appearance at The Counting House in February.
Singer-songwriter with a voice as pure as the Snow which she sings of on her song of the same name. Her lyrics tell stories of the wild forces of nature and relationships, with a musically diverse pallet providing the back drop, including collaborations with Canadian rappers (Presumably not Snow!). 15:30 Singing Mums
18:30 Guy North
Formed by Georgia Jakubiak, who has played Long Division in her State of Georgia guise, Singing Mums is a pop choir founded with the intention of helping its members unwind and have a good sing. Performing songs by artists including Kate Bush, Annie Lennox and fingers crossed Erasure!
A Long Division fixture as Thomas Wilby Gang frontman, catch him playing a stripped back set of Americana under the Guy North moniker in even more intimate surroundings than the yurt we last put him on in! Expect a set that showcase his country, blues, gospel and folk influences. 29

We’re delighted to have commissioned 9 local artists to create brand new pieces of work for Long Division 2019. Onto The Streets, supported by Arts Council England, aims to animate public spaces and shine a fresh or alternative light on our city, whilst supporting artists to create new and sometimes experimental pieces of work. Look out for these jewels in the Long Division crown across the whole festival:
Matt Abbott: Repeated Subtraction Location: 14 Cross Street
and 10 Bull Ring
Day/s: Wednesday to Sunday (festival duration) Time/s: Daylight hours Matt Abbott is a Wakefield-born poet, educator and activist. After researching the cultural history of Wakefield city centre, he’s produced a series of short poetic odes to former musical haunts, which will be displayed in empty shop windows. A look back at what we’ve lost, but a glimpse of what we might yet build. Matt starred in the recent national TV ad campaign for Nationwide Building Society, with a poem written about Wakefield city centre.
Neon Workshops: I Formed A Band Location: 41 Northgate (opposite Jolly Boys Tap) Day/s: Wednesday – Sunday (festival duration) Time/s: All times Neon Workshops was set up in 2010 by artist Richard Wheater, in his home city of Wakefield, out of frustration that there was nowhere in Europe to learn neon hands-on in a creative environment. In it’s ninth year, Neon Workshops caters specifically for the creative industry, consulting, fabricating, installing, teaching and exhibiting neon, with the hope of inspiring future generations to play with and develop a subject that has heaps of potential! This specially commissioned piece references the song “I Formed A Band” by Art Brut.

Mappa Music Location: 21 Northgate Day/s: Wednesday – Sunday (festival duration) Time/s: Daylight Hours For #OntoTheStreets Helen Thomas has drawn a large, alternative map in celebration of the music of Wakefield. Helen invited people to suggest bands & musicians (past and present) from the Wakefield district that they would like to celebrate. The street names on Mappa Music are replaced with names taken from the list of over 200 responses.
Seanna Doonan Location: Radcliffe Place (next to Iris) Day/s: Wednesday – Sunday (whole festival) Time/s: Daylight Hours Based in Wakefield, Seanna specialises in mural art and illustration and her passion lies in the creation of historical and socio-political pieces. Seanna hopes her work reflects the lives, struggles and relationships of ordinary people, providing a platform for social comment. Touching on her own background and memories of Wakefield, Seanna has a desire to articulate the past, and present of the city along with all its changes. Through a series of illustrations Seanna will produce a mural showing familiar scenes and landmarks from across the city centre as well as the characters who live within the “merrie city”.
Napoleon IIIrd: Buildings Location: Wakefield Cathedral Day/s: Saturday Time/s: Installation 12.00 – 18.00 with performances at 15.30 and 17.30 A small change in society has a much larger effect on its skyline. This new piece of music, light and performance derives from James Mabbett’s vision of composition and sound as structural, or architectural and explores the impact of the city on both individual and group happiness. 36
360 Snapshots: One To One Development Trust Location: Various Day/s: Saturday Time/s: Various Artists from digital arts organisation One to One Development Trust are filming 360 moving-image in a variety of venues on the Saturday of Long Division. This will be edited into a 360-film uniquely capturing the spirit of the day and set to a track produced by a Long Division band as a legacy of the 2019 Festival. #360Snapshots2019
Shot By Stan: Mugshots By Stan Location: Central Marquee Day/s: Saturday Time/s: 12:00 – 16:00 Taking inspiration from old police dept mugshots of Bowie, Elvis, Jim Morrison and countless others, local photographer ‘stAn’ will create Long Division’s own set of iconic mugshots. Anyone, and everyone is invited to step in and have their portrait taken. The images will then be edited and processed to give then the retro look and feel of the old police department mugshot.
Eleanor Aldous & Wakefield Based Youth Cast Location: Outside the Central Marquee Day/s: Saturday Time/s: 12:30 / 13:30 / 14:30 / 15:30 A piece of movement based drama, performed to music that explores the concept of climate change and how it will ultimately be the younger generation who are left to shoulder the burden. The piece will be performed on the streets of Wakefield, in and around the bull ring at various times on Saturday. Part protest, part performance, will you join the cause?
37
Chronicle Location: The Precinct Day/s: Sunday Time/s: 11am – 3pm Come and tell the story of Long Division! We’ll be in the Cathedral Precinct with a mobile drawing and film cart and need YOUR HELP! Children and grown ups can sketch the festival with specialist artist educator ArtJohn and record Wakefield stories with Jenny Rogers, cultural education specialist. Everyone can take part in this fun activity which will form a film to chronicle Long Division. The film will be available on our YouTube Channel: ArtJohn.

imagining Hooky in the stocks is a funny thought, the #YoungTeam are far from frivolous or naïve, their eventual ideas a real eye opener for myself and festival organiser Dean. For the culmination of their six months work they’ve truly come up with some ace and innovative stuff – crucially, ideas we hadn’t thought up ourselves.
2019 saw Long Division run it’s first ever education programme with funding from Wakefield Community Foundation. The pilot will deliver a GCSE level qualification (Silver Arts Award) in DIY Events, the first of its kind. Long Division team member Paul Bateson shares his experiences: “Bouncy castle! Wet sponge our headliners in the stocks! Long Division tattoos!”
We are dead proud of their work so far. To get here we have been on a project which has seen us visit and review loads of creative stuff in Wakefield, exposing the #YoungTeam to local arts organisations such as Wakefield Theatre Royal, Wakefield Jazz, The Hepworth, and more. #YoungTeam have created their own artwork which was exhibited at the Art-House’s bi-monthly Artwalk, our chosen venue Create Café; and most recently, work with the Long Division board to meet arts professionals from the region to research job roles and
The Long Division #YoungTeam playfully mind map ideas for their Arts Award project as part of the Sunday Fringe at Long Division Festival this year and I look on feeling old.
#YOUNG
“Yes! Let’s get Peter Hook to have an LD tattoo... Or get We Are Scientists to do face painting!” These are some silly ones, and though
39
And as I sit with the #YoungTeam as they make plans for their Sunday activities, there is an element of age gap – I have learnt that snapchat is dead, man, and that young people do still love a McDonalds – but more than that I’ve felt like we’re working well together and learning together. I’ve found lots of new music from these young people and it’s more like creative mentoring than teachers with students.
careers. Did I even mention them being on the radio? In a national newspaper? It’s been a great project so far and I think I’m learning a lot too. Having been a secondary school teacher for 10 years I’ve branched out into community education. In the same way Long Division is branching out. Long Division this year is more than a music festival. Through our family friendly events and workshops, our funding new work in Wakefield through commissions and seed fund, and this Youth Programme taking 15-19yr olds through an Arts Award work placement project we want to find ways of keeping good people in Wakefield and Wakefield as a place for creative careers.
I’m buzzing to be part of the project The Young Team are certainly inspiring me!
NGTEAM
#YoungTeam will present activities on Sunday June 2nd including Humans Of Wakefield, Music Memorabilia Charity Auction, Mascot Making, music workshop ‘Little Long Division’ and assisting with stage management and artist liaison.
We want to inspire the next ‘Long Division’ – whatever that may be. If we do our jobs right we’ll be out of a job!
