Year 7, 8 and 9


Citizenship Days

All students have actively been involved in Citizenship Days reflecting the theme of Democracy and justice.

Throughout the days students had the opportunity to explore the impact of the Children’s Declaration of Human Rights.


Year 7 €

Year 7 students had a visit from a UNICEF Ambassador Sheila Bailey. Sheila outlined the aims and goals of UNICEF as an international organisation. As a volunteer Sheila shared her International projects in India and her personal attachments to India. Her commitment and passion was evident to the many worthy projects.


Year 7

As students began to explore the impact of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, They were joined by our second guest speaker Mr Ali. Unfortunately Mr Ali was involved in a tragic custody battle in 2011.

Mr Ali said ‘Qasim my younger brother, was all I had left following the horror smash which claimed the lives of my Nelson father, stepmother and two younger sisters on New Year’s Day 2011’. Mr Ali shared a very sensitive and emotional story reflecting his struggle to achieve justice.


Year 7

Students were involved in three workshops:- A, The impact of UNICEF around the world, B, The role of the Sophie Lancaster Foundation, C, The Lancashire Youth Charter- ‘our voice’


Year 8

Year 8 students focused on a key question: Can laws protect?

All students reflected on how laws are made through the House of Lords and the Houses of Parliament. Students investigated the case study of Sarah’s Law and the impact of national campaigns to change the laws which protect us today.


Year 8

All students began to debate moral issues, such as ‘should smacking be banned?’, PCSO James Gorrie from Accrington Police Station, led a workshop based on Civil Disobedience and the impact of laws for young people today.


Year 9 €

Year 9 students focused on the Impact of Racism. Students were joined by PCSO James Gorrie, James focus on the New Legislation for Hate crime in the UK.

Joe from Blackburn Rovers delivered a workshop on Racism in Football and the impact of negative attitudes. Students explored the New Equality legislation 2011. After a busy morning Students created their message of Equality for the future.
