Rhyddings masterChef

WINNER: Charlotte Allonby with her trophy and judges PROGRESS: Rhyddings students continue to exceed their targets

I am sure that you will be aware of the recent release of the 2013 Performance Tables, based on our 2012 exam results. As I said in August, we are extremely proud of another year where our results improved at a greater rate than most other local schools. We are also very proud of the ‘value added’ measure which is the second highest in Hyndburn. This is a measure of the progress made from when students come in aged 11 and leave at 16. Our ‘value added’ is well above the national average. This means that our striving to help all our students do their very best and beyond is, and will continue to be, hugely successful. - Paul Trickett, Headteacher

Model Student! Rhyddings’ student Tutu Mukelabai has always had a keen interest in fashion and she recently modelled in our annual fashion show. Tutu entered a national modelling competition sponsored by ‘Bliss’ magazine and reached the final! She finished in third place overall and was featured in December’s edition of the magazine along with the other finalists. Congratulations Tutu!

Rhyddings Masterchef 2013, now in its second year, has been another outstanding competition. The standard amongst all competing students (over 60 auditioned) has been incredibly high, making judging very difficult for all staff involved. We have had cupcakes & muffins, favourite takeaway dishes, Indian week (where we were joined by Raj and one of his chefs from Raj Indian Cuisine & Lounge in Blackburn), as well as the mystery box where students had to create a dish without knowing the ingredients in advance. The semi-final was hotly contested between Charlotte Allonby (8TS), Kizzy Bradley (8TS), Daisy Clemson (7GH) and Morgan Herne (7MT). They were joined by Chef Matt from Freemasons at Wiswell, who demonstrated a deconstructed lemon meringue pie, which the students recreated. Just two days later, finalists Daisy and Charlotte cooked off for the Masterchef title, having to create a two course meal. A big congratulations to Charlotte, our 2013 winner! Congratulations also to runner-up Daisy. Both girls did a fantastic job, and have won some great prizes. Well done to all students who took part - if you didn’t make it through, 2014 could be your year!

Parents - We need you! School Announcements Rhyddings has two vacancies for Parent Governors. The role gives you the opportunity to contribute to the running and development of the school and to be at the heart of decision making. Parents contribute their own experiences to the Governing body. An understanding of educational issues is not required, this will be acquired through involvement and participation. A commitment to attend two meetings a term is necessary although other opportunities are available if you have more time. Optional training is provided in conjunction with the County Council and in school. If you would like to find out more or chat to current Governors please contact the school. We work in conjunction with staff to ensure that the school offers the best for its students. Whilst the role is unpaid, its rewards are considerable. David Brunskill - Chair of Governors

Year 10 Business Studies Trip Year 10 Business Studies students have been on trips to Cadbury World in Birmingham and The Chocolate House in Blackburn. The aim of these trips was to see and experience how businesses operate by touring the premises and also attending a seminar. Information has been collected for

use in coursework about the type of ownership, aims and objectives, customer service, competitors and structure of each organisation. All students behaved impeccably during both trips and are currently using this first hand knowledge to enhance their coursework. They also got to sample some tasty treats!

The school will close for half term on Friday 15th February at 3pm and re-open on Monday 25th February. As Easter is early this year, school will close again on Wednesday 27th March at the regular time of 3pm. We re-open for the Summer term on Monday 15th April. Year 11 Art students are now halfway through their exam preparation time - the sessions for sitting their 10 hour exam are: Tuesday 5th March - Thursday 7th March Tuesday 12th March - Thursday 14th March - so please AVOID making appointments for your artists on those days whilst helping them to re-schedule any interviews for college that may fall on those days. Thank you.
