Malham Trip

‘STUNNING:’ Malham Cove

In the run up to our 80th celebration week, Rhyddings held a coffee morning for former staff and past students. The attendees were served tea, coffee and scones made by some of our catering students as they watched a presentation made by Mr Perry on ‘The way we were’ – a collection of photographs and memories from the past 80 years of Rhyddings. Afterwards, they took part in a science lesson with Mr Dutton to see how things have changed in the classroom since they were here. They had the opportunity to talk to some of our current students, who were recording some of their memories to be featured in an upcoming souvenir anniversary newsletter which will be available to read soon!

Damian shooting for ‘dream job’ Former Rhyddings student Damian Livesey is hoping to head down under as the successful applicant for the ‘best job in the world’. Damian, who studied GCSE Media here, is one of 24 finalists from over 40,000 applicants for six dream jobs in Melbourne, Australia. He was shortlisted for the position of ‘lifestyle photographer’ after submitting a short video CV. He told the Accrington Observer: “It was a real shock when I found out I had been shortlisted – I was overwhelmed. It’s potentially a lifechanging opportunity so I’m really excited.” We wish Damian the best of luck with his interview – for more details, please visit his blog at damian-lifestyle-photographer.tumblr.com.

As part of the “Adventure Landscapes” topic, Year 8 Geographers visited Malham Cove on Wednesday 15th May. The cove is a vertical cliff which is 260 feet high and is made of limestone. It is very famous and was even featured in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” (watch out for it when Harry and Hermione set up camp!) On a clear day you can even see Pendle Hill from the top! Even though the weather wasn’t what you would expect from Spring (it did make us very appreciative of our hot chocolates!), we had a fantastic day climbing up to the top of the cove and walking in the stunning natural landscape of the Yorkshire Dales. We were even lucky enough to spy some rare Peregrine Falcons! - Miss Masefield

Announcements School will close for half term on Friday 24th May at 3pm and re-open on Monday 3rd June. We would like to remind parents that school will close at 2.10pm on Monday 17th June to allow for extended staff training. Rhyddings recently won a bid in the region of £270,000 for the refurbishment and renovation of student and staff toilets. Work will commence shortly and is hoped to be completed by mid-September 2013. Renovations will be carried out during term time to reach the completion date. Strict health and safety measures will be in place during any works as the safety of our staff and students is paramount. Year 7 and 8 students are invited to join our new Craft Club on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Activities will include sewing, baking, as well as jewellery and card making. Please see Mrs Jolly in T6 for more details on how to join. Mr Allan would like to thank his construction class for all their recent efforts in building parts of the set of the Oswaldtwistle Players’ production of ‘Fawlty Towers’. The show was a great success and the set looked fantastic - well done lads!

We are currently compiling a presentation folder for all of our parents.

Students from Health and Social Care in Years 10 & 11 helped to raise £422.13 for Derian House as part of their coursework projects. The students recently presented a cheque to Jill Kirkham from Derian House (pictured above left). The students organised a cake sale and ran several stalls at the school’s Christmas Fair. This was done in partnership with members of the Young Aawaz group, who baked and packed items for both Valentine’s and Mother’s Day. Members of Young Aawaz and students undertaking the Duke of Edinburgh Award (within school) also completed the Rotary Great Charity Walk on 19th May to raise further funds for this worthy charity.

Technology Tournament Two teams of Year 8 and Year 9 girls recently took part in the annual Rotary International / BAE Systems Technology Tournament held at Hollins. The aim this year THIRD: Our Y8 team & their model was to make a vehicle which moved forward by dropping a weight. This was a very difficult challenge and many teams could not get any movement form their models. Each team was judged on planning, teamwork, design analysis, development, realisation and their portfolio. Our Year 8 team did well in all areas and were placed an impressive third from over 20 teams in their category. Autumn Bibby, Olivia Holt, Abigail Yates and Kiera Livesey plan to go back a year wiser and take the title - let’s hope they can!

Year 8 student Megan Storey has shown she has a real affinity for history, after coming first in an essay competition. The contest, organised by Accrington Grammar School Old Boys, asked students from across Hyndburn to write about an aspect of local history. Megan’s entry took the form of a diary written by an ‘Accrington Pal’ during the First World War. Accrington Grammar School Old Boys’ President Alan Mitton recently presented Megan with a £50 prize along with a £300 computer for the school. He said: “Our members would like to associate themselves with education in Hyndburn and hope that competitions like this will start a life-long interest in local history, not only for Megan, but for all students in the area.”
