AND THE
OSCAR
GOES TO...
Rhyddings’ high flyers honoured at packed out ‘Oscars’ ceremony Rhyddings’ celebrated its highest achieving students’ successes at the school’s third annual ‘Oscars’ awards on Tuesday night. Over 260 parents and family members filled the seats at the Hope Church Community Centre in Oswaldtwistle to see well over 150 awards given out to the school’s brightest and best learners. Students from Year 7 to 10 were awarded with bronze, silver and gold awards for attainment in each subject, with the gold award winners also presented with a high street voucher and special ‘Oscar’ statuette. Special trophies for extra-curricular sport and performing arts were also given out. Big winners on the night included Trinity Woodman in Year 7 and Thomas Johnston in Year 8, who both claimed the top awards in several subjects. Mrs Stobbs who organised the event said: “It was a really lovely evening and a great chance for us to focus on the positive things our students do every day. “We’re really looking forward to seeing what these students achieve in years to come, I’m sure we have some potential entrepreneurs, medics, performers, sportspeople and leaders in the making. I’m sure they will continue to do themselves, their families and us proud well into the future.” Headteacher Paul Trickett said: “At Rhyddings we believe, passionately, in developing the whole child and celebrating achievements in many varied aspects of that development. “The ‘Oscars’ however, are about celebrating excellence in achievement. I am extremely proud of all of them and was really pleased to see the students and their families revel in their success.”

Hippings set the pace at Rhyddings’ first Primary Athletics Competition We hosted our first Hyndburn Primary School Athletics competition at our Heys Sports Complex on Thursday 2nd July. Year 4 and 5 teams from Hippings, Moor End, St. Oswald’s, West End, St. Nicholas’, Belthorn and Sacred Heart competed for first place in a variety of disciplines at the school’s £1.2m community sports facility.
The overall winners were Hippings Methodist, whose boys’ team also performed best overall. The overall girls’ team winners for the day were Belthorn. We are delighted by the success of this year and are looking to build on it for subsequent yearly competitions both in athletics and other sports.
CONTINENT HOUSES
School Announcements School will close for summer on Friday 17th July at 12 noon. The Belthorn bus has been booked for this time. School will re-open for Year 7, 10 and 11 students on Tuesday 8th September and open for all students on Wednesday 9th. We hope everyone has a fantastic summer break and we would like to wish Eid Mubarak to all our Muslim students and staff.
The House Continent System is brand new to Rhyddings and will be launched across school in the first week of September. The House Continents are based around the five populated Continents: Europe, Africa, Asia, Australasia and the Americas. Each House Continent will include students from all year groups. This is an exciting opportunity for students to learn more about the world in which we live. They will develop high quality learning skills through ‘global’ activities, supporting literacy, numeracy and communication. Throughout the year there will be many fun, thought-provoking and sometimes challenging activities for students to be involved in. These include sport, Performing Arts, Eco Warriors, Warriors of Change and charity projects. More details of the new system will be revealed on our launch day on Friday 11th September.
Masterchef 2015 This year’s Rhyddings Masterchef final was once again fantastic. Our three finalists each cooked up two courses, and demonstrated a lot of technique with some difficult dishes. Congratulations to our 2015 Rhyddings Masterchef Tamzin Riley, and a big well done to both Ryan Richardson and Cameron Walker, who came in second and third place respectively.
Lancashire Science & Technology Competition A group of our Year 8 and 9 students took part in the recent Lancashire Science & Technology day at Cardinal Newman College in Preston. They competed in mixed school groups over a series of challenges that tested not only their Science and Technology knowledge, but also teamwork, problem solving and creativity. The challenges were E-Fit, Robotics,Vehicle and Construction. Our students worked incredibly hard and really made the most of the experience.
We would like to remind parents about the school’s uniform policy. Students must wear black shoes only – this has been reiterated to all students in their final week. We also do not allow any form of pumps or trainers (Converse, Vans, Nike, Adidas etc.) unless they are for PE lessons. If you have any queries, please check our website. On the subject of uniform - we would welcome donations of any blazers, jumpers, shirts and ties that have been outgrown or no longer needed by Year 10 students. Please send any (washed) uniform to Year Leaders. Former students Jane Baxter and Ajmal Faizy have both been celebrating very different successes recently. Jane has recently gained a First Class honours degree from Cambridge. Jane, who left us in 2010, has just completed her studies in Natural Biological Sciences and spent last summer touring and working in China. Ajmal is hoping to become one of Britain’s top boxers – and wants to dedicate any future titles to Britain – the country that took him in as a refugee. Ajmal came to us from Afghanistan in 2009 after the Taliban murdered his father, is now 20 and recently won for his eighth professional fight. We wish both of them all the best for the future and we are extremely proud of their achievements at Rhyddings and beyond.
Youth SACRE
Amsterdam visit
Earlier this month,Year 7 and 8 students attended the RE Youth SACRE Conference at the Gujarat Hindu Temple in Preston. The aim of the conference was for students to look at the Lancashire RE curriculum and discuss how it could be improved. Emily Greenwood-Campbell, Bethany Berry, Grace Haworth and Bethany Beresford worked with students from seven other primary and secondary schools from across Lancashire and will meet again soon to discuss and develop their ideas.
Our Year 10 Geography students once again enjoyed a fantastic residential field trip to Amsterdam in the Netherlands. On the way there they visited the stone groyne at Mappleton to learn about importance and effects of shoreline defences. Whilst in Amsterdam the students visited the city’s canals, Anne Frank’s house and enjoyed a day out at the Efteling theme park.
