Fashion Show

March/April 2012

Students hit the catwalk with latest prom styles to raise charity money Rhyddings students took to the catwalk last week – showing off some of the latest styles in fashion and the current trends in prom wear – in our annual fashion show. The yearly enterprise event showcases clothes, prom dresses and dinner suits available at some of our best local businesses. We had the hottest high street looks from All The Rage Too and some gorgeous bespoke prom gowns from The Sewing Room; both shops based in Accrington. The lads took to the runway wearing some ultra-stylish evening wear kindly provided by Winstanley’s Morning Wear, situated here in Oswaldtwistle. The evening also featured fantastic talent demonstrations from our student dancers Kadie Sidwell and Katie Howard as well as stunning vocals performances by Rhianna Gibson and Kayode Adewale. As well as enjoying the fashion,Year 8 student Tutu Mukelabai gave a talk about the importance of our Young Aawaz Girl’s Group raising funds for this year’s chosen charity, Children’s Hospice Derian House. Organiser Carmel Cunliffe said: “This annual event gives us the opportunity to showcase the many talents of our students and to help advertise and support our local businesses who provide the fantastic suits, dresses and outfits that make it all possible.”

Former Student Focus Austin Cook – Since leaving Rhyddings in 2001, Austin has trained as an engineer at BAE Systems. For the last four years he has been in charge of improving the efficiency of F-35 Fighter carbon fibre production. His commitment to the project and overall savings to the company of around £20m have recently earned him BAE’s Industrial Capability award. Andrew McKie – After leaving us in 1999, Andrew went to St. Mary’s College in Blackburn before moving on to Keele University and then York College of Law. He has been working as a solicitor for the last four years. In July, he became a fully qualified barrister, working out of the Chambers at Manchester. Jane Baxter – Jane has spent the last two years at Clitheroe Royal Grammar School’s sixth form, working towards her A-Levels. She wants to study Natural Sciences at university and has been offered a place at Cambridge. Jane says that the confidence and supportive group of friends and teachers she gained at school is key to her success so far!

Tournament Triumph

On Friday 9th March three teams of Rhyddings students competed Nathan Haworth, Sam Baxter, Zak Cunliffe & Lewis Keen in the BAE / Rotary Club’s anual tournament held at Hollins. Their technology challenge this year was to design and make a coin sorter that was both creative and reliable! All of our students taking part did exceptionally well but extra praise must be given to our group of Year 11 boys who were awarded second place in the challenge, competing against secondary schools from across the county.

Rhyddings ‘MasterChef’ Over 55 students auditioned from Years 7 - 10, with just 18 making it through the skills test and into round one. The remainer made their own cupcakes, were creative in the Mystery Box / Invention Test, and were then whittled down to eight students for the quarter finals. This was judged with the help of Raj and Chef Abdul from Raj Indian Cuisine and Lounge in Blackburn, who claimed that the standard of some students’ work was so high, their food could be served in their restaurant! Judging the semi final was Ben Wood. He’s been the chef at Michelin-starred Northcote Manor, cooked for Prince Charles, worked with celebrity chefs and currently works hard feeding the troops in the Army. The mystery dish was an open beef ravioli. The contestants watched Ben prepare, cook and plate the dish, and had to take notes as they were not given a recipe. Then it was their turn – they all did extremely well, even if the pasta machine made them somewhat apprehensive! The final will be held this week between Alannah Gibson and Jess Hatton, with a special celebrity judge helping us out again. The students are competing for prizes including cook books, kitchen equipment, work experience in a professional kitchen and the coveted Rhyddings Masterchef trophy.

Interschools Quiz Rhyddings hosted this year’s Gifted and Talented Leading Edge quiz. Rhyddings came second which is our best result yet! The team showed fantastic spirit and gave quick fire responses to some really challenging questions. Congratulations to Damon Smith, Amy Whittaker, Olivia Holt, Jordan Hindle, Ibrahim Shazad, Tutu Mukelabai, Zulaikah Shabbir and Amelia Woodhouse.
