Heys Complex Legend opens new facility

Rhyddings’ new sports complex on the Heys playing fields has been opened by former Blackpool and England right back, Jimmy Armfield CBE. We have been involved for the past several years, in collaboration with Hippings Methodist Primary School and Oswaldtwistle St Mary’s FC, in rebuilding and opening the new Heys Sporting Complex. The facilities consist of six football pitches of various sizes, changing rooms, education facilities and a car park. Headteacher Paul Trickett said: “The re-opening of the field, with stateof-the-art changing facilities, will enable the school once more to bring the fields into curriculum use. This has not been possible for more than 10 years. We will benefit from pitches and training areas that are of extremely high quality, thus enabling the students to develop and use high levels of skills.”

RoCK?! Rehearsals for our next school musical ‘Rock of Ages’ are now taking place on Tuesdays after school until 4pm. Miss Booth recently went on a research mission down to London to check out the West End production (left). If you can help with 80s clothing, props, posters or rock memorabilia please let us know. We are also looking for anyone who may be able to lend us some scaffolding for the set!

‘Futures’ Event Our highly successful Year 10 & 11 Futures Evening took place at Rhyddings on Monday 8th October. Several local colleges, sixth forms and training organisations were in attendance and presented students with information, application forms and answered questions on what opportunities they offer post 16. We would like to thank the 100-plus students and parents that attended. If any parents are worried about their child’s grades or have any questions about colleges, please do not hesitate to contact Joanne Bury on 01254 231051.

Rhyddings masterChef

After the huge success of last year’s competition, Miss Greenhalgh and Miss Bedwell will be holding the competition again, starting after Christmas. We are anticipating very high numbers, so in preparation for this, we will be holding the auditions after school, starting the first week back after October half term. The competition is open to years 7-10, and if you are interested, you need to email Miss Greenhalgh or pop up to the food room to put your name down BEFORE Friday 26th October.

Breakdance classes Students have been learning how to top rock, coin drop and freeze with our new break dance instructor Joe Walmesley. He is running a regular session after school on Thursdays and is hoping to assemble a crew to compete in the national schools street dance championships. Interested? Please see Miss Booth for more details.

School Shop New products in stock - made by our Design Technology students

Our enterprising Year 8 students have been working hard in class and after school to design a brand new range of products to sell in our school shop. This gives the students a sense of designing for others and makes a business and enterprise school activity real. Aaminah Ahmed (right) has put great effort into designing and making products after school to sell this Halloween. If you wish to buy any of the products please contact Mr Scott.

Queen St. Mill Visit

The History Department took a group of Year 9 students to Queen Street Mill Textile Museum in Burnley to find out what mill life was like in Victorian England. The pupils discovered the conditions people worked in and found out about the jobs that children did. They then got a chance to step back in time to a Victorian school room where they had to write using chalk and a slate! The day ended with a visit to the Victorian wardrobe where pupils found out what it was like to dress as a mill worker. The trip brought to life the harsh realities of mill life and made students realise how lucky they are!

School Announcements Rhyddings will close for the half term at 3pm on Friday 26th October. School will reopen on Monday 5th November. Friday 26th October, the final day of this half term, is KS4’s charity fund raising day. Once again we are asking our students to enjoy the activities on the day and bring in some extra cash for our chosen charities - the Tickled Pink & Turn Blue. For a £1 donation students can wear what they like along the pink or blue theme! During the day there will be cake sales, wacky hair colours, nail painting, henna hands, a FIFA gaming tournament, dance studio, ‘mini-cinema’ and we maybe even a session of good old fashioned bingo! If any students have other great fundraising ideas, or if any parents would like to donate cakes or even prizes, then please let us know. Let’s make this a great fundraising day and one to be enjoyed by all! The families of Year 7 students are invited into Rhyddings on Thursday 8th November from 2-4pm. Come in for a drink and a cake, see the school and the Zone in action, meet your child’s form tutor and see their work. Your child will be bringing an invitation home soon! Our new Rap Club is starting on Thursdays after school in Studio 4. All interested students should see Mrs Marshall to sign up as places are limited!

Attendance Matters Last year we achieved our highest ever attendance at 92.3%. We would like to thank parents for their support in helping us achieve this. If your son/daughter is going to be off school ill or for any other reason will you please remember to ring school and leave a clear message stating his/her name, form and reason for absence. Finally, just a reminder to ensure your son/daughter is in school by 8.45am. Late arrivals, without a genuine reason, are detained at break time.
