Reducing plastic waste

Reducing our plastic waste

Since our temporary dining room was installed we have been providing bottled water at both break and lunchtimes, which has significantly increased our plastic waste. You will no doubt be aware of the negative impact on the environment, both locally and globally of plastic waste. https://skyoceanrescue.com/media/1337/sky-fact-sheet.pdf In an effort to play our part we will be phasing out bottled water over the next week. We will replace this with juicy water cartons, which can be recycled. In addition, we will provide water and cups in the dining room, again the cups can be recycled. However, to further reduce waste we would ask that pupils have their own re-usable, re-fillable drinks bottle, which they can fill at home and at school, with water during either break or lunch. When you are considering a re-fillable drinks bottle please ensure that it has a secure, non-leak system so that it can be carried in a school bag safely without fear of leaks. We are currently working to source a ‘Rhyddings’ drinks bottle that can be purchased from the school shop if students require one. May I remind you that canned, fizzy or energy drinks are not appropriate for school and as such are banned items, which has been school policy for some time. I do hope that you will support this initiative so that our young people can demonstrate #Respect – for their environment – ‘The Rhyddings Way’. If every pupil has their own refillable bottle we will save approximately 300+ plastic bottles a day, 1500+ a week, that’s nearly 60,000 in a school year! Thank you in anticipation of your support. Yours sincerely

Mr A K Williams Headteacher
