Women of t n e m e v e i h Ac Awards! Three members of Young Aawaz received recognition for their hard work and dedication at the Women of Achievement awards on Thursday 8th March. The annual event organised by Aawaz was held at Accrington Town Hall and is arranged to coincide with International Women’s day. Women of all ages were recognised for their efforts and members of Young Aawaz presented and performed to the packed audience of over 250 people including the Mayor and Mayoress of Hyndburn and Pendle, the Chairman of Lancashire County Council and a whole host of local sponsors. Young Aawaz also made £170 for Derian House by making and packaging various cakes and biscuits which were sold at the event. Former award winner Rizwana Ali told the audience about ‘her journey’ and the support and help that she had received from Young Aawaz and other members also talked about various projects they had been involved in. Nafeesa Ishaq received an award for her continued dedication to raise money for local charities. Asma Ramzan was recognised for her hard work and dedication as a member of Young Aawaz and the help and support that she constantly provides for Younger members. Zarafshan Khan was recognised for her commitment to her studies.

C a re e rs Event Young Aawaz members had a fantastic day out at The Skills Northwest event at the Trafford Centre in February. Members were taken to the event which showcased presentations and workshops from various different employers, colleges and universities before they were advertised to the general public. There were workshops on interview techniques, confidence classes and various taster sessions on a whole host of courses and careers. The event gave young people the opportunity to apply for apprenticeships and to get advice and guidance on the application procedure; applications completed on the day were given priority.

Young Aawaz also attended an event at The Dunkenhalgh Hotel in March. The event, organised by Growth for jobs and Hyndburn Enterprise Trust, was designed to encourage young women to brush up on their business skills and be aware of the opportunities that are available for them within the business community. Young Aawaz members were given some really good advice on how to set up a small business and some of the girls have decided it may be something that they may peruse as their sales in cakes and biscuits have been a huge hit. Watch out Alan Sugar these girls mean business!

e s r u o C Y DI Our eight week DIY course is coming to an end, we have all enjoyed being part of the project, and we seem to have learnt so much in such a short space of time! We have learnt how to put up a shelf, how to tile and decorate, wire a plug and even plumb in a washing machine. Learning about these things has shown me how important it is to learn new skills and how easy things can be if you get the support and encouragement. We can achieve anything when we really try! - Arfina Begum aged 15
