On behalf of BOMA Canada, BOMA Ottawa, and the BOMEX® 2012 organizing committee we welcome you to the premier event in the commercial real estate industry calendar, taking place from September 11 to 13, 2012 in the Nation’s Capital.

BOMA Canada's Board of Directors held its Summer Governance Meetings in Victoria, BC in early June using the opportunity for the CSO Council and Board to not only conduct their regular business meetings but to jointly engage in a lengthy discussion on the association’s marquee program - BOMA BESt. The dialogue between both groups was invaluable to the continued success of the program.

Thank you to BOMA B.C. for hosting the meetings.

In June of this year I had the privilege of representing BOMA Canada at the BOMA International 2012 Every Building Conference & Expo in Seattle, Washington and had the opportunity to present at the Board of Governors meeting. It was a great chance to showcase BOMA Canada’s initiatives.

Congratulations to Keith Major of Bentall Kennedy (Canada) LP who was elected to BOMA International's Executive Committee during the conference. His experience and expertise will certainly contribute to the ongoing success of BOMA internationally.

BOMA Canada was honoured to support the large number of Canadian entries competing in the International TOBY awards. Although we are all disappointed that none of the entries took home the coveted trophies, the BOMA Canada Board of Directors is committed to keeping the awards program and its recognition of excellence an ongoing priority.

On the volunteer front, the Board of Directors has completed its committee/task force review with intent to not only identify those committees no longer required but to amalgamate those serving a common goal, re-purpose any that are task force oriented, and assign volunteer resources to ones needing support. The efforts of the association’s numerous volunteers are greatly appreciated.

BOMA Canada’s National Conference and Exhibition, BOMEX®, has established itself as one of Canada’s premier annual conferences and exhibitions for Canadian commercial real estate industry professionals. After a very successful conference in St. John’s Newfoundland in 2011, this year’s event takes to the nation’s capital. Our hosts, BOMA Ottawa have been hard at work putting the final touches on everything from sponsorship and exhibits to education and the celebration of excellence.

There is something for everyone and a few surprises to boot.

BOMEX® also provides an opportunity for our Board of Directors to meet in person, to connect personally with our local associations and promote networking. BOMA Canada is delighted to have BOMA International’s President, Henry Chamberlain and Chairman, Joseph Markling attending this year’s event.

BOMA facilitates national initiatives and the exchange of ideas that support our member associations in the promotion of education, advocacy, recognition of excellence and networking.

BOMA facilite les initiatives locales et l’échange des idées qui aident nos associations à promouvoir l’éducation, à représentation, la reconnaissance de l’excellence et le réseautage.

Le Conseil d'administration a tenu ses réunions de gouvernance estivales à Victoria, C.-B. au début juin. Il a profité de l'occasion pour que le Conseil du CSO et le Conseil d'administration n'aient pas tenu que des réunions d'affaires régulières, mais qu'ils s'engagent conjointement dans une discussion en profondeur sur le programme de marque de l'association BOMA BESt. Le dialogue entre les deux groupes a eu un apport inestimable au succès du programme. Merci à BOMA B.C., l'hôte des réunions.

En juin de cette année, j'ai eu l'honneur de représenter BOMA Canada à la conférence et exposition 2012 Every Building BOMA International à Seattle, Washington, et j'ai eu la chance de faire une présentation à la réunion du Conseil d'administration. Cela a été une excellente occasion de mettre de l'avant les initiatives de BOMA Canada.

Félicitations à Keith Major de Bentall Kennedy (Canada) LP, élu au Conseil exécutif de BOMA International au cours de la conférence. Son expérience et ses connaissances contribueront sans doute à la réussite de BOMA à l'échelle internationale.

BOMA Canada était fière de son action d'appui face au grand nombre d'entrées canadiennes en compétition pour l'International TOBY Award.

Bien que déçu, puisqu'aucune des entrées n'a remporté les trophées convoités, le Conseil d'administration de BOMA Canada s'engage à continuer son engagement envers le programme de récompenses et de reconnaissance de l'excellence et d'en faire une priorité.

Concernant les bénévoles, le Conseil d'administration a terminé sa révision sur les comités/groupes de travail, afin non seulement d'identifier les comités qui ne sont plus nécessaires, mais aussi d'amalgamer ceux servant un but commun, de repenser l'intention de ceux axés sur les groupes d'intervention, et de réassigner les ressources des participants bénévoles vers des comités nécessitant une aide. Les efforts des nombreux bénévoles sont grandement appréciés.

La conférence et exposition nationale BOMA Canada, BOMEX®, s'est instaurée en tant que l'une des conférences et expositions de premier plan pour les professionnels canadiens du secteur de l'immobilier commercial.

Suite à une conférence très réussie à St. John's Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador en 2011, l'événement de cette année aura lieu dans la capitale nationale.

Notre hôte, BOMA Ottawa, a travaillé dur à mettre la touche finale sur tout, de la commandite aux expositions, aux cours de formation et à la célébration de l'excellence. Il y a quelque chose pour chacun, sans compter quelques surprises.

BOMEX® fournit également une occasion au Conseil d'administration de se réunir en personne, d'établir des contacts personnels avec nos associations locales et de promouvoir le travail en réseau. BOMA Canada est ravie de la présence attendue, lors de l'événement de cette année, du président de BOMA International, Henry Chamberlain, et du président du conseil Joseph Markling. « Ce qu'il y a de fantastique à BOMEX®, c'est que chaque conférence absorbe la saveur locale lors de ses voyages partout au pays. Cela rend la participation à chaque événement une expérience vraiment unique. »Vous joindrez-vous à moi? »

INTRODUCING

Benjamin L.

BOMA Canada was delighted when Benjamin L. Shinewald joined the association as its new President and CEO in May 2012. Benjamin has already begun making his mark on the organization. “I’m just delighted to be in this new, exciting role,” says Benjamin, adding “though it has only been a few months, I think I have a strong sense of the organization’s challenges and its extremely exciting opportunities. I am thrilled that I will have a chance to build on BOMA Canada’s solid foundation, working with our amazing Board, staff and volunteers and taking the organization to an even higher level.”

Benjamin l. shinewald is the President and CEO of the Building Owners and Managers Association of Canada (BOMA Canada).

From 2008-2011, he served in successively senior roles with Canadian Jewish Congress, ultimately being promoted to Chief Executive Officer.

At CJC, Benjamin modernized operations and brought a distinctly youthful, twenty-first century approach to the 93-yearold organization.

From 2005-2008, Benjamin served as a Senior Analyst in the Privy Council Office, where he advised two Prime Ministers and two Cabinets on economic policy, including the largest government spending project in post-World War II history. Benjamin practiced corporate and securities law at Torys LLP in Toronto from 2002-2005, where he advised clients on a variety of complex commercial transactions, including two successful initial public offerings. He earlier served as a Law Clerk to Chief Justice Aharon Barak of the Supreme Court of Israel (2002); worked for Hon. Martin Lee, Chair of the Democratic Party of Hong Kong (2000); served in the Canadian

Mission to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris (199899); and worked for the Winnipeg Jets Hockey Club of the National Hockey League (199596). Benjamin is a member in good standing of both the Law Society of Upper Canada and the New York State Bar Association.

In 2007, Benjamin was awarded an Action Canada Fellowship and named “one of Canada’s best and brightest emerging leaders.” Through Action Canada, he coauthored a report on Inter-Provincial Labour Barriers whose chief recommendation was subsequently adopted unanimously by Canada’s Premiers. In 2009, the European Union recognized him as a “young, promising leader,” selecting him from a worldwide pool for the European Union Visitors Programme.

In 2010, Benjamin was one of the first-ever Canadians awarded a Goldmann Fellowship, in recognition of being a part of “a new generation of Jewish communal leadership.”

Benjamin earned a Juris Doctor in Law from the University of Toronto in 2002, where he also served as the President of the Students’ Law Society and was a Fellow at Massey College; a Master’s in International Relations from the London School of Economics in 1997, where he was a Fellow at Goodenough College; and a B.A. (First Class Honours) from the University of Manitoba in 1994, when he also participated in a one-year exchange at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Benjamin is fluent in English, French and Hebrew, and speaks some Spanish. His work has been published in leading newspapers including the Globe and Mail and specialist newspapers such as the Law Times. He has been quoted in television, radio and in print in three languages.

Benjamin was born and raised in Winnipeg and maintains a family cottage in Manitoba.

He has lived in Israel, England, France and the United States, and has spent summers in Spain, Turkey and Hong Kong. In 2003, he spent a month backpacking on his own across Ethiopia.

Benjamin is an avid runner, having completed a marathon and several halfmarathons. He is an award winning amateur photographer, an avid reader of fiction, history and public policy. Benjamin is active in the community, volunteering and serving on charitable boards. He lives with his wife, who is a child protection social worker, and his two daughters, in Toronto. ■

Benjamin l. shinewald est le président et chef des opérations de l'association Building Owners and Managers Association of Canada (BOMA Canada). De 2008 à 2011, il a occupé successivement des postes de direction au sein du Congrès juif canadien, pour finalement être promu chef des opérations. Au CJC, Benjamin a modernisé les opérations et instillé une approche distinctement jeune et reflétant le vingt et unième siècle dans une organisation vieille de 93 ans.

De 2005 à 2008, Benjamin a occupé le poste d'analyste principal dans le Bureau du Conseil privé. Il y conseilla deux premiers ministres et deux conseils des ministres sur les politiques économiques, y compris le gouvernement ayant soutenu le projet le plus dispendieux dans l'histoire de l'après-guerre.

Benjamin a pratiqué le droit des sociétés et des valeurs mobilières chez Torys LLP à Toronto de 2002 à 2005, où il a conseillé des

Local winners eligible to compete at the national level as National Awards Finalists have submitted their entries online for consideration by the national judges. The winners will be announced at the National Awards dinner, September 12, 2012 during BOMEX®.

The BOMA Canada Board of Directors has recently approved a new committee structure.

Le Conseil d'administration de BOMA Canada a récemment approuvé une nouvelle structure de comité.

This new structure includes a revitalized BOMA BESt Committee, whose key purpose will be to consider strategic challenges and opportunities facing BOMA BESt and make recommendations to the BOMA Canada Board of Directors. We are now searching for a new Chair of the Committee as well as committee members representing property managers, chief staff officers, environment/ energy experts, engineers/consultants with experience working with BOMA BESt and others with relevant experience.

The BOMA Canada Board also approved a new BOMA BESt Technical Committee, whose key purpose will be to consider technical challenges and opportunities facing BOMA BESt. In a dynamic marketplace and environment, there are always ongoing changes to technologies, standards, practices etc. The BOMA BESt Technical Committee will resolve those challenges as they apply to current versions of BOMA BESt and may engage in other activities, such as writing White Papers. Where issues facing the BOMA BESt Technical Committee involve a strategic component, the Technical Committee will make recommendations to the BOMA BESt Committee, which in turn may make recommendations to the BOMA Canada Board of Directors. BOMA Canada is seeking a Chair and Members who will have skills and expertise in each of BOMA BESt’s six key areas of environmental performance: energy, water, waste reduction and site, emissions and effluents, indoor environment, and environmental management systems.

Both the BOMA BESt Committee and the BOMA BESt Technical Committee are supported by professional staff but are composed largely of volunteers. The commitment to these committees can be significant and those who apply should be sure that they can dedicate appropriate time to their duties.

In the event of a real or perceived conflict of interest, conflicted committee members must completely recuse themselves.

All BOMA Canada committees have Accountable Board Members (ABMs).

ABMs sit on in order to ensure that committee work is in keeping with the general direction set by the BOMA Canada board and to act as a liaison between committees and the board. ABMs are non-voting. The current ABM for the BOMA BESt Committee and the BOMA BESt Technical Committee is Randal Froebelius.

BOMA BESt committee and subcommittee members presently serving (under the old committee structure) are invited to apply for either/both of the above committees, though term limits of two consecutive two-year terms (four years total) will remain in place.

We encourage applications for either/both committees, including applications for Chairs. Please send a brief statement describing your qualifications, areas of interest and expertise, and your resume or biography, to info@bomacanada.ca by Tuesday, September 18, 2012.

Please be sure to indicate to which committee(s) you are applying as well as if you are applying to be a Committee Chair or a Committee Member.

Nous cherchons maintenant un nouveau président du comité ainsi que des membres du comité représentant les directeurs de propriétés, les dirigeants de l'organisation, des experts en environnement et en énergie, des ingénieurs et des consultants dotés d'une expérience de travail avec BOMA BESt et d'autres personnes démontrant une expérience pertinente.

Le conseil d'administration de BOMA a également approuvé un nouveau comité technique BOMA BESt, dont le but principal sera d'examiner les défis techniques et les possibilités qui s'offrent à BOMA BESt. Dans un environnement et un marché dynamiques, il se produit toujours des changements dans les technologies, les normes, les pratiques, etc.

Le Comité technique de BOMA BESt résoudra ces défis lorsqu'ils s'appliquent aux versions actuelles de BOMA BESt et il peut se livrer à d'autres activités, comme la rédaction d'un Livre blanc. Lorsque les enjeux du comité technique de BOMA BESt comprennent une composante stratégique, le comité technique fera des recommandations au Comité BOMA BESt, qui à son tour peut faire des recommandations au Conseil d'administration de BOMA Canada. BOMA Canada est à la recherche d'un président et de membres qui auront les compétences et l'expertise dans chacun de six domaines clés de BOMA BESt en matière de performance environnementale : énergie, eau, réduction des déchets et site, émissions et effluents, l'environnement intérieur et les systèmes de gestion environnementale.

Le comité BOMA BEST et le Comité technique de BOMA BESt sont appuyés par le personnel professionnel qui est composé essentiellement de bénévoles. L'engagement envers ces comités peut être important et ceux qui postulent devraient être sûrs qu'ils peuvent consacrer le temps adéquat à leurs fonctions.

Dans le cas d'un conflit d'intérêt réel ou perçu, les membres du comité en conflit doivent complètement se retirer.

Tous les comités de BOMA Canada comprennent des membres du conseil responsables (Accountable Board Members- ABM). BoMa and rEalpac recognized by City of toronto "lights out" Earlier this year the City of Toronto presented a set of prints to groups who have supported efforts to reduce bird collisions - the "Lights Out" program.

BOMA Toronto was presented with the first set of prints at its AGM. The City also wanted to recognize REALpac and presented them with the 2nd set for their efforts in working with BOMA Toronto on the issue.

Lors de son AGA, BOMA Toronto a reçu le premier ensemble de gravures. La ville a également voulu remercier REALpac. Elle lui a offert le deuxième ensemble afin de remercier le groupe pour son travail assidu avec BOMA Toronto au sujet de cet enjeu. BOMA Canada et BOMA Toronto étaient au rendez-vous lors de la présentation à REALpac en juin. Also in June, the Board of Directors held its Summer Governance Meetings in Victoria, BC using the opportunity for the CSO Council and Board to not only conduct their regular business meetings but to jointly engage with each other. Special thanks to Paul LaBranche of BOMA BC for his assistance with the meetings.

It is a combination of intense business networking, and valuable social time that benefits companies and careers. BOMA Canada was delighted to have its SecretaryTreasurer, Mike Bishop, WestBank Projects Corp. in attendance during this year’s spring session.

Le Comité consultatif national (CCN) de BoMa international constitue un réseau exclusif de professionnels chevronnés du secteur l'immobilier commercial. Le CCN se consacre aux questions les plus pressantes qui infl uencent les sociétés disposant d'importants portefeuilles régionaux, nationaux et internationaux. Les membres du Conseil proviennent des plus grandes sociétés de notre pays qui conçoivent, possèdent ou gèrent l'ensemble des compétences représentant l'immobilier commercial dans chaque discipline de la propriété et de la gestion d'actifs immobiliers. Les membres se réunissent trois fois par année dans le but d'échanger des idées, de formuler des recommandations en matière de politique et d'apprendre les uns des autres. Les sociétés et les carrières bénéficient d'une combinaison d'un réseau intense d'affaires et de rencontres sociales précieuses. BOMA Canada s'est réjouie que son secrétaire trésorier, Mike Bishop de WestBank Projects Corp., soit présent lors de la séance du printemps de cette année.

Congratulations to Keith Major of Bentall Kennedy (Canada) LP who was elected to BOMA International's Executive Committee during the annual conference, June 24-26, in Seattle, Washington. Keith has over 25 years experience in commercial real estate development, operations, and management.

Responsibilities at Bentall LP as Senior Vice President Property Management include overseeing the development, management and operations for Ontario office and industrial portfolio. During the past 10 years at Bentall, Keith has played an instrumental role shaping and implementing Bentall’s approach to sustainable property management. His experience and expertise will certainly contribute to the ongoing success of BOMA internationally. ■
