It’s hard to believe we’ve arrived at our annual resource guide issue already. This year has gone by exceptionally fast and while it is always fun to research and sort through all the new products and innovations in the market, it always comes down to a race to the deadline. IDS Vancouver was another great showcase of design. At the annual exhibit Prototype, innovative conceptual works and products by the next generation of designers were once again highlighted. This year’s winner was Recycled Chopsticks by Chop Value. The People’s Choice Award went to Tregullow sofa by Sholto Design Studio. The 2016 L.A.M.P. Design Competition is also a great annual event for highlighting creative ideas when it comes to lighting. The AWMAC Awards of Excellence recognizes innovative architectural woodwork projects. Take a look at the outstanding projects on page 13. Read about how West Coast based restaurant Earls has created a one-off prototype concept designed to transform the chain dining experience. Inside this issue is a wide and eclectic selection of news and innovative products available. From funriture to kitchen and bath, we’ve complied some of the best of the best to inspire you. role in the style of the kitchen. Go classic, mix cabinetry styles for a modern approach, or select a high gloss style on the walls, juxtaposed against a textured island. Cabinets can act as either accents or statement pieces. For an urban look, try the slab door style or for a more traditional style, select a raised mitre or raised panel. Practical considerations will have a large impact on the selection of the size and shape of cabinetry. Kitchen use should be a top consideration while designing the space — investing in built in racks, drawers, appliances garages and features now put unused space to work and save future headaches. An on trend option is integrating appliances into the space with cabinetry for a design forward furniture like feel. Overall it’s important to think about storage needs, counter space requirements, and what appliances will be included in the kitchen. The upper cabinets showcase a variety of doors with different functionalities — each used in specific spaces.

Touchless Technology
Hands-free technology has taken off in residential kitchens. Hands-free faucets (also known as touchless faucets, electronic faucets, or motion-sensing faucets) continue to evolve and gain popularity in homes. While the technology is not new (think public bathrooms), improvements with sensors and wiring have made the faucets indispensable in a busy kitchen. The faucet is one of the most used tools in the kitchen and touchless technology has made it even better and more effective. With a tap of a finger, forearm or wrist, the flow of water is activated, helping to get work done faster while minimizing mess and germs. Major brands lead the way, offering different designs and features, but the same great convenience.

Moen STo
Kohler’s Sensate kitchen faucet takes touchless to a whole new level of convenience with response technology, featuring a state-of-the-art sensor that responds in 20 milliseconds.
Moen’s MotionSense faucets feature two sensors to set water in motion — a ready sensor at the base for quick tasks and a wave sensor at the top of the spout.

Established Black Hole Lamp by Dario Narvaez & Anthony Baxter from New York, USA
A popular depiction of a black hole is an unseen force of nature drawing light down to a single point in space. Using this analogy, the Black Hole Lamp controls the intensity of the light being emitted by creating a funnel from which the light cannot escape.

root across North America. Bringing nature inside and reintroducing vegetation have become an important part of the sustainable strategy for the urban environment. Aside from the aesthetic value, living walls contribute significant environmental, social and economic benefits. Nedlaw Living Walls designed and built the living wall for the new Edmonton Federal Building lobby, under the direction of architectural firm, Kasian Architecture Interior Design and Planning Ltd. As an architectural landmark and one of Canada’s best examples of art deco style, the Federal building recently underwent an extensive revitalization project. According to Esther RivardSirois, project architect and sustainability lead at Kasian, “The green

wall at the Edmonton Federal Building is a great addition to the public space. It heightens the senses and brings life to the pavilion. It complements the architectural treelike wooden beams in the pavilion and creates a warm and inviting natural environment all year long.” The two-storey living wall biofilter covers multiple sides and incorporates a water feature making it the defining focal point in the newly added lobby area. At 2,400 square feet, this is the largest known indoor air biofilter and it provides much more than an aesthetic feature. The biofilter is a working element of the building’s mechanical system. The wall draws in dirty air, removes pollutants and returns clean air to the space, thereby improving air quality. “This biofilter actively removes pollutants from the air, generating
over 1,500 cfm (700 litres per second) of virtual fresh air. That’s enough ‘fresh’ air to supply two thirds of the needs of over 150 people. And this virtual fresh air is generated using up to 90 per cent less energy than conventional air treatment systems,” said Dr. Alan Darlington (the technology’s founder). By supplying clean air at a fraction of the cost of traditional HVAC systems, this biofilter lowers energy costs to improve building performance. The living wall also contributes to the humidity levels of the atrium space. As such, the living wall system adds points to the LEED Gold certification goal. Nedlaw Living Walls won a 2016 Green Roof and Wall Award of Excellence from Green Roofs for Healthy Cities for the living wall at the Edmonton Federal Building.

unique dining experiences increasing, the 35-year-old West Coast based restaurant Earls has created a one-off prototype concept designed to transform the chain dining experience. The concept was inspired by local and global trends that are changing how North Americans approach the dining experience and the brand’s existing strengths. Earls.67, the 67th eatery in the roster of locations, has packaged and delivered its newfound approach in the form of a compellingly curated restaurant. Spearheaded by renowned designers Glasfurd & Walker and Ste Marie
DESIGN QUARTERLY | RESOURCE GUIDE 2017
Design in collaboration with Earls, Earls.67 is the first of what will be a collection of independently compelling restaurants. To conceptualize the interiors, the collaborative team underwent a vigorous three-year process, which synthesized global inspirations, past experiences and investigative research. The end result? A design that evokes Earls’ rich North American history while articulating a sense of adventure and exploration. “The design is lead by a core narrative and sensibility, and an overall spirit of risk paired with comfort,” said Craig Stanghetta, principal of Ste Marie Design. “The way we
achieve it is through space programing, shifts in colour and the vernacular of the furniture. For example, we use darker, lusher, softer and more cloistered forms paired with darker colours and lighting.” Although the interiors are unified to the larger Earls narrative with the use of reoccurring materials, each area of the restaurant is designed to encompass a different sensation for the guest. The dining room boasts clean lines, egalitarian seating and an open concept to encourage sharing and collaboration mirrored in the menu, while the Bankers Bar is specifically designed to manifest

a feeling of mischief and anonymity. For guests visiting between the lunch and dinner rushes, Earls.67 even includes a coffee bar that is driven to foster relaxation. “In a space this vast and with the frequency of visits, we wanted guests to be able to dictate their experience to a degree,” says Stanghetta. “The space is like a well designed home. It always has the homeowner’s ethos and personality in it’s bones, even though the mood and intention of each room can be starkly different.” For both designers, working with a chain restaurant was a new experience. In an industry that thrives on
the new, the pair had to ensure the brand remained relevant and exciting, while also being mindful of the company’s existing structure. Autonomous yet a true reflection of the Earls, what resulted is a blend between innovation and the historic narrative of the brand, which has been treasured by consumers since 1982. Earls.67’s step into the unknown displays the restaurant’s willingness to adapt to the changing urban landscape. The prototype as a whole was based off of micro and macro dining trends that appeal to basic human values: comfort, food, nourishment, fun, community and security. Ste
Marie Design, Glasfurd & Walker and Earls credit the 18 months dedicated to understanding human habits to being able to create a space that guests are naturally drawn to. When the team wasn’t researching, they spent time traveling, dining and brainstorming to allow energies to flow and merge into what is now Earls.67. Stanghetta remarked, “the product is a hypothesis. What we do know we have right is that it helped galvanize a new point of view for this company and the energy and commitment to evolving this brand in way that is compelling, and innovative is very strong now.”
The concept stems from Earls’ president, Mo Jessa, and his understanding of the need for exceptional and innovative dining. Jessa and his team recognize that consumers are looking for unique experiences, which are customized to their location — a new freedom that allowed Earls.67 to source and utilize local and niche products customized to the surrounding market. As a direct result of Earls.67’s success, the restaurant group has started to apply elements of the Calgary-based prototype to future developments.
